[...] Allah goes ahead and does some of that explaining for Dave: The data comes from the new ABC/BBC poll of Iraqis published today. I’m going to highlight some of the key results here, but I recommend flipping through it all. One thing these questions won’t show is how bad the trend is since November 2005 — and how good the trend was then since 2004. The numbers were up across the board; then came the Samarra bombing last February and everything lunged. If we’d been able somehow to stop those rat bastards before they did it, the country might look different now. [...]

I dug up some older links...

I would rather listen to the Iraqi people:
"What took you so long? We've been suffering!" In the towns of southern Iraq many are asking the US-led forces: “Where have you been? Iraq has been suffering under Saddam Hussein’s regime for 30 years. What took you so long?” In Umm Qasr we stood in front of a group of children innocently inquiring about the equipment the journalists were carrying. One asked me: “Did you see what Saddam did to us? No water, no food - what is wrong with you? Don’t you have a brain?”

"Terrified of Saddam" “There are people from Baath here reporting everything that goes on. There are cameras here recording our faces. If the Americans were to withdraw and everything were to return to the way it was before, we want to make sure that we survive the massacre that would follow as Baath go house to house killing anyone who voiced opposition to Saddam. In public, we always pledge our allegiance to Saddam, but in our hearts we feel something else.”

And "if they stop now, we're as good as dead!" That was when I first got the sense that these people were really eager to see Saddam and Baath gone. I asked several what they thought of the US/UK plan to remove Saddam. They told me: “Now that they have started to remove him, they cannot stop. If they do, then we are all as good as dead. He still has informants in Umm Qasr and he knows who is against him and who isn’t.”

Excellent work here AP, but do you (or does anyone else here) think that the media will note the ridiculous oversampling of Sunnis?

I saw Shep talking about this and other recent polls today on Studio B and he didn't mention the oversampling. I'm certain the networks, CNN, etc. NEVER will.

There’s a civil war in Baghdad, perhaps, but in Basra they just don’t see it.

But the Democrats and the MSM see a civil war, and that is the only thing that counts!

How can a majority be in favor of coalition forces staying and a majority think attacks on coalition forces are acceptable, at the same time?

Either they were polling terrorists who are saying they dont want thier targets to leave or else I think sometimes you simply have to conclude some polls are flawed.

You know, this crappy biased polling always works in favor of the dems because they have EVERY media outlet spouting their propaganda except for sometimes off/on FoxNews and talk radio.

Who hears how biased these polls are except us? Plus, we already look at polls with mucho skepticism.

Well of course the sunni's liked it better under saddam, they had it made!

We did the right thing by liberating Iraq and Afghanistan, it is also the right thing to train their military, but let's not make the same mistake the Romans made by training the Germans to their own level. Let's train 'em slightly lower ... just in case.

77% think we are a bad influence yet 65% don't want us to leave.

This one more than doubles their actual strength in the country, which is only 10 to 15% according to best estimates.

... a percentage that would no doubt decline precipitously if we pulled out now.

Oh the irony - they hate us the most of the 3 sampled groups, yet they are the group that would be most endangered by our leaving.

Why are you springing these numbers on us on a Monday?

I'll have to read this again on Tuesday, now, so I can wrap my head around it.

Allw me to put this up: iraqi War Winners and Losers:

http://www.arabnews.com/?page=1&section=0&article=25343 Fortunately there are many more winners in this war than losers. The Arab nations are rid of a regime that had not only given all Arabs a bad name but had acted as a center of conspiracy and aggression against many of them. There is not a single Arab leader today who would regret Saddam’s demise. All of Iraq’s neighbors could be included among the winners. Iran sees the end of a regime that provoked an eight-year war that claimed over a million lives. The toppling of Saddam also means the closure of anti-Iranian terrorist camps maintained by Saddam on Iraqi territory. The Baathist tyranny in Baghdad was like a time bomb that was bound to explode at some point.

"Again, a Kurdish surprise. Why would 22% support sectarianism?"

I would guess that to many Kurds "separation along sectarian lines" means Kurdistan. Kurds are technically a separate sect from Iraqi Sunnis, as they follow a different Sunni doctrine than Arab Sunnis.
