Drudge disses Hot Air

A Hot Air commenter mentioned this last week: It seems Matt Drudge–Internet pioneer, New Media godfather, and tech entrepreneur–has a grudge against little ol’ Hot Air. He made some bizarre, disparaging remarks attacking this site and me on his radio show last weekend. Listen:

Transcript:

Just ugh. The things I want to say right now. But we’ve got an FCC. The things I want to say. Maybe we’ll do, uh, uh, a commentary on the Internet like Michelle Malkin. Maybe I’ll stand in front of like a blue screen and hold a banana and start talking into the Internets. (Sneering tone) ‘This is Matt Drudge reporting on Hot Air.’ Agggh. You know. It’s ridiculous. Looks like, you know, Captain Kangaroo time, Michelle. Get real.

“Get real?” Got whine?

We at Hot Air certainly don’t have the resources to look like the slicksters at CNN or the dinosaur networks. We don’t have multi-million dollar sets, graphics, and wardrobes like Katie Couric. We put substance first over bells and whistles. (You would think someone with a website design circa 1980 might appreciate our priorities.) That said, folks in the broadcast industry have had nice words about our production values and I’m proud of what our team has accomplished in less than a year. In fact, we’ve had broadcast network engineers and producers ask us how we do it. On the blog side, Allahpundit has turned the site into a must-read. We’ve gone from nowhere to a top-30 site on Technorati’s Top 100 list. On the video side, Bryan Preston (I guess he’s Mr. Green Jeans now) has edited and produced nearly 250 daily video shows since last April. Hot Air serves a whopping 14 terabytes per month. We’ve been fortunate to work with incredibly talented people across the country–photographers, animators, Photoshoppers, video editors, musicians, documentarians, and on-air talent. We love what we do here. We’re grateful that our readers/viewers come back for more every day and we strive constantly to improve and expand our products and programming.

What’s it to you, Matt, if we bring our little “banana” microphones and cameras to Baghdad or CPAC or the Doolittle Raiders reunion or the local illegal alien hangout or the Gathering of Eagles (which barely rated a blip on the almighty Drudge radar screen)? What’s it to you if authors find it worth their time to sit down with us for Internet broadcast interviews? Why does it bother you so? What’s it to you, Matt, if my fellow hosts and I spend our time standing in front of a green screen in our basement studio so we can practice the very kind of Internet citizen journalism you once preached yourself?

“Captain Kangaroo time?” Well, someone’s certainly acting like he’s in pre-school.

The Internet is a big enough place for all of us. No need to act like the threatened MSM’ers you became famous for revolting against years ago. As someone once put it so eloquently: “Now, with a modem, anyone can follow the world and report on the world.”

More from that great speech, Matt:

We have entered an era vibrating with the din of small voices. Every citizen can be a reporter, can take on the powers that be. The difference between the Internet, television and radio, magazines, newspapers is the two-way communication. The Net gives as much voice to a 13-year-old computer geek like me as to a CEO or speaker of the House. We all become equal.

And now, kids, back to our show…

Good morning, Captain, let’s come on out and play!
Good morning, Captain, it’s going to be a perfect day!
Get your crayons and your paper and your pencil, too
And come on out and play with Captain Kangaroo!

This is just crazy. You’d expect someone like him to encourage alternative media after all the unfair press he’s gotten. This commentary is really poor judgment.

LOL……Drudge…I think Allah put it best a while back….
something about ‘tabloid’ I think.

What he is pee-veed off about is people sourceing thru his site but if you review his site it sources everything! Get life Matt.

Limerick on March 19, 2007 at 3:16 PM

I’m really puzzled by Drudge’s attack on this site. Maybe because he’s no longer “Flavor of the Month”? I agree that he, too, is starting to act like “Old Media” complaining about new upstarts.

Personally, I don’t have any problem with the Hot Air production values…I’m not expecting CNN, nor do I think it is necessary or essential for the purposes of this site.

MM eloquently defends Hot Air in the above, but to me, the bottom line is that this site has become so heavily trafficked.

I suppose it’s a left-handed compliment in a way to have Drudge call you out, but it was completely unnecesary. You always hear reports that Drudge is a little weird and eccentric…maybe “bitter” needs to be added.

Drudge is hemorrhaging readers, declining steadily since December, off 50% in terms of percentages of page views on the Internet according to Alexa.

No, not November, with the elections. December.

Anil Petra on March 19, 2007 at 3:17 PM

It’s all about getting the message out. And if a blue screen and a banana expedite the delivery of that message to more people, then we need more blue screens and more bananas, not fewer.

He’s just a hater because “the Drudge siren” was his last great innovation over there. Don’t sweat it.

Ha! What a loser. He stopped being my first stop of the day years ago thanks to you Michelle. Then, you have the vision to create Hot Air and do all the hard work and put out such an excellent product. He’s yesterday’s news!

There I feel better now…hope you do to Michelle.

JohnnyD on March 19, 2007 at 3:23 PM

I think he sees the writing on the wall. People like me used to have Drudge Report as our first stop for news. Now we go to Hot Air. I check Hot Air like 7 times a day, and maybe I’ll check Drudge once. Drudge used to be my main squeeze, but HA is my lady now. I can’t be the only one.

He’s jealous. Simple.

Enrique on March 19, 2007 at 3:29 PM

Michelle send him a hotair t-shirt and cap. He might be a fan.

Whenever I am eating ice-cream, my cousin ask for some by saying “I thought that you were lactose-intolerant. There is no you eat all that.” Before I knew what was going on, he has a spoon in his hands.

It might be his way of saying, “Can I have some?”
Michelle post his resume if I actually sends it.

Ouabam on March 19, 2007 at 3:31 PM

This isn’t particularly surprising. As far as I can tell, he never links blogs. He ignored the Dan Rather story until it hit the MSM and does the same with other stories begun in the blogosphere.

I appreciate what Drudge has done, and his site is still a daily visit, but think it’s sad that he’s becoming part of what he used to rail against.

Slublog on March 19, 2007 at 3:34 PM

I missed this portion of the show last night, and I’d be interested to hear the context… I’m kind of surprised at these comments.

RightWinged on March 19, 2007 at 3:34 PM

As far as v-logs go, HA has the best production quality I’ve seen.

Perhaps it’s gotten better, but, the AP’s first v-log effort was horribly backlit and there was a lot of background noise.

The posts you guys put together have good production quality and great content.

JadeNYU on March 19, 2007 at 3:34 PM

I check Drudge about once a week now. HA and MM are top 2 on my favorites list of blogs. Followed by BlackFive, LGF and HamNation.

opusrex on March 19, 2007 at 3:34 PM

I go to Drudge and HA daily, and lately I’m seeing a few stories pop-up on HA before Drudge. Sounds like someone’s getting a little jealous of the competition.

Actually, it’s prob the fact that HA has so many hotties!

budorob on March 19, 2007 at 3:35 PM

Drudge is upset that you took some of his internet traffic.

Btw, I don’t like Drudge or Allah, but I do enjoy you, Michelle, and all that you have to say… keep up the good work.

My friends yet go to Drudge (I don’t) and then they wonder where I receive all my late breaking news… Not at Drudge.

ar_basin on March 19, 2007 at 3:37 PM

It’s all about getting the message out.

Exactly. Too many people are just worried about style over substance. And for being a ‘green screen in our basement studio‘, Bryan has done a fabulous job.

So Drudge is whining about HA? Let him. I, for one, have come to rely on HA in the past year; I think I check HotAir more than my work email! There’s other sites that I frequent, but for a steady stream of intelligently written commentary and analysis, nothing beats Michelle, AP, Bryan, and Ian (not to mention the great guest posters and guest Vent hosts).

As one other data point, look at the intense excitement we saw when the last round of registrants was admitted to the inner sanctum of HotAir. Matt could only dream that people would get that excited about his product.

dalewalt on March 19, 2007 at 3:37 PM

Drudge, of all people, should know better than to attack like this.

Just how many stories does Drudge go out there and hunt down himself? He gets due props and greatly deserved for his pioneer work in the new media. And his front page is still my browser’s homepage. But anybody now can generate a collection of links to common news and commentary sources.

The Drudge Report, just like any particular form of service or product, must progress with the times. Many people who once clicked through Drudge to get to the sites of news and commentators they read regularly, don’t need his links any longer.

Many people read at least a couple of blogs, and find their news linked or embedded in stories that way. And among all of those, very few provide the short response time to news that HotAir manages, and none I know of include regular video commentary by the hosts.

To quote Clara Peller, “Where’s the beef, Matt?” Why are you hating on people who cause you no harm? The lefthand column of your site links to HuffPo, Lucianne, and the Gawker, but ignores HotAir.

Freelancer on March 19, 2007 at 3:38 PM

Somebody enlighten me: I really don’t understand the basic substance of Drudge’s criticisms.

What exactly is he saying?

I’m asking sincerely. In all that babbling, I didn’t see a substantive point. Someone with a grasp of English, spell out what he’s saying, please.

Or is it really as simple as annoyance at the fact that others are capitalizing on the same non-traditional approach to media that Drudge used …?

Professor Blather on March 19, 2007 at 3:39 PM

I think part of the reason for Drudge’s drop in traffic is technology. Drudge is a news aggregator, but he’s only one guy who scours the web for stories. A few years back, that was a great service.

Now, a person can install an RSS Reader, subscribe to a wide variety of feeds and get the same service as quickly as news comes out. And we can get news from blogs, which Drudge will not link.

Slublog on March 19, 2007 at 3:40 PM

I don’t read Drudge. I read Hot Air, LGF, Dhimmi and Jihad Watch, Real Clear Politics, National Post, MEMRI and about half a dozen other PJs Media affiliates. Plus the Israeli papers.

Sounds like Mr. Drudge has an acute case of sour grapes. Call the waaaaaaaaaaambulance. I think it is absolutely amazing what you all have achieved. The best thing about the internet is that you don’t need anyone’s favours anymore to broadcast a message. You guys took that up a notch-making your own studio-quality broadcasts, going into the field in Iraq (any lefty bloggers done that yet-didn’t think so), and getting top notch people on Vent like Mark Steyn, Robert Spencer, etc..All together a very impressive site, and though I don’t comment much-I sure do enjoy reading, sending tips and I love AllahPundit’s headers and the way he manages to catch the most butt-ugly screen frames of the fugly lefties.

Keep up the excellent work.

Drudge is as relevant to the internet as Trilby Lundberg is to oil/gas prices… Both are clinging to dreams of former glory.

rbb on March 19, 2007 at 3:48 PM

Michelle, ever notice that Matt Drudge NEVER (or rarely, like once in a blue moon) links to any story being reported on and investigated by one of the so many fine bloggers out there. Drudge must have a lame stream media link to a story for it to be worthy of a link on his site. I find that hypocritical coming from someone who is always pointing out biased reporting.

olympian2008 on March 19, 2007 at 3:49 PM

Okay Prof, I’ll translate.

Just ugh. The things I want to say right now. But we’ve got an FCC.

Maybe I’ll stand in front of like a blue screen and hold a banana and start talking into the Internets.

Just look at what she’s doing. It’s easy. I could do that!

(Sneering tone) ‘This is Matt Drudge reporting

See? I’m just as good as Michelle!. Pay attention to me!

Agggh. You know. It’s ridiculous. Looks like, you know, Captain Kangaroo time, Michelle. Get real.

dalewalt on March 19, 2007 at 3:49 PM

Sad to hear about the Drudge attack.
I heard him mention you, Michelle, a few weeks back, too.
What’s up with that?

Funny, that it is usually HotAir or MM who have the jump on the news today… Drudge is many times late in on the game. He really ought to follow your blogs more closely.

gatewaypundit on March 19, 2007 at 3:49 PM

Drudge Report has taken a left turn in the stories it has chosen to highlight the past year. Every day there must be a half dozen stories regarding climate change. It’s becoming a tabloid site. HotAir is a great resource and I’m amazed at how far this site has come in a year. Congratulations to the entire HotAir team. You’ve done very well.

liberty on March 19, 2007 at 3:49 PM

The Net gives as much voice to a 13-year-old computer geek like me as to a CEO or speaker of the House. We all become equal.

And this is bad because of…………….?

PinkyBigglesworth on March 19, 2007 at 3:50 PM

Bryan and Michelle,

You made a rookie mistake in not developing a trendy French phrase to describe what you do. “V-blogging” is too prosaic for the bien-pensant. If you had dubbed “Hot Air” a version of “cinema verite” reborn for les blogosphere, then you would have more street cred with Drudge and the MSM.

Au revoir,

Anton on March 19, 2007 at 3:51 PM

I came to be aware of Drudge fairly late in the web game. I never go to his site because it looks like it took about 10 minutes to write the code for it. I think Matt got to where he is by being “Johnny-on-the-spot” He was a web legend before most people had even heard of it. The problem is that he hasn’t updated his paradigm. So I think that if ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and papers like the New York Times can be called the “dinosaur media” then Drudge is the dinosaur of the new media. You can’t coast on the prestige of being “first to market” forever. Besides, bad=mouthing Michelle give me a big-brotherly impulse to slam his head in my car door. Repeatedly

The tabloid stuff is annoying, but you’re misinterpreting the global warming stuff… He doesn’t buy it, and mocks it if you listen to his radio show. But he’s also just about bringing straight news, he doesn’t offer opinion on the site. That said, I’ve seen others argue that he’s tilting left before, and that couldn’t be further from the truth.

I’m not defending his comments here, just felt the need to clear that up, as I said earlier:

thirteen28 on March 19, 2007 at 3:58 PM

For the most part, I like Hot Air. Although the stories are sometimes mundane and unoriginal.

as far as the videos are concerned: you do the best you can. the sound isn’t all that great but as you pointed out this ain’t Lucas Films. if it’s interesting, the quality shouldn’t matter too much

As long as you don’t get full of yourselves I’ll continue to visit.

Opinionnation on March 19, 2007 at 3:59 PM

For quite a while now Drudge has been suspiciously “bipartisan” in his posts and headlines, and one never knows which side will get the hit on any given day. I don’t doubt for a second that he is simply jealous of Hot Air, which has all the “in” and “it” Must Read factor Drudge use to have, but no longer does.

Michelle et al: Hot Air is the essential political website, each Vent is a Must See, and if I were involved I’d be bursting with pride. No need to feel defensive against jealous attacks (which will only increase with your success and influence). Onward!

Halley on March 19, 2007 at 4:01 PM

Drudge is a linker, not a breaker.

I do look at his website, and he does have some breaking news. But if others break the news before him, he gives no credit. He does best with some financial news, he has good and convienient links to my favorite writers, he is the equivalent of the 7-11 of news. Open 24 hours and has a selection.

But if you want the meat, go to Hot Air.

MirCat on March 19, 2007 at 4:03 PM

I completely disagree with Matt. I know…what a surprise coming from a HA fan. Let me explain: HA offers up real newsworthy commentary on a daily basis with the prize of allowing an audience (rather large audience!) to comment, vent, be sarcastic – whatever – which is something you can’t get anywhere else – not even a talk show which must restrict comment time and number of commentors. After those facts, exactly how many high quality blogs (like HA – which keeps it pretty clean and topical) are actually out there? Michelle, Allah, Bryan and Ian – you’ve got the best thing going right here. None of us really knows how much work goes in to keeping up such a great site. Keep up the great work!

thedecider on March 19, 2007 at 4:03 PM

Michelle, ever heard the ol’ term “no such thing as bad publicity?” What I wouldn’t give to have Drudge trash my blog on the radio. Sure, its criticism, but I’m not sure it warrants your response above.

And in all fairness, video blogging is certainly in its infancy. And Hot Air is leading the evolution of video as a blogging tool, and doing a great job of it. But its lower-budget look seems campy. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Its still cutting edge blogging.

And Drudge’s hits are going down, not necessarily because specific blogs are getting so much more attention as a news source, but I think its because more and more people use RSS feeds as a news source.

BelchSpeak on March 19, 2007 at 4:05 PM

Drudge is nothing but a menu. He supplies a clickable selection of topics much like the menu provided by DirectTV or DishNet. He’s not a journalist. He’s a TV Guide.

Gregor on March 19, 2007 at 4:06 PM

I actually read more DU than Drudge. With that in mind, there are dots that need to be connected. Who is Drudge’s good friend that finds no love here? Ann Coulter. Drudge is Coulter’s lap dog. There’s some timing that needs to be questioned.

Drudge got his start on Usenet, so his web design is quite advanced by the standard of his day… Usenet dinosaur.

Isn’t Matt Drudge good friends with Ann Coulter? Michelle Malkin and Bryan did diss Ann at CPAC. . .just saying. Allah has not shown much love for Ann from the very beginning.

It looks like some competition heating up between the two powerhouses Hot Air and Drudge. Hot Air is much more interesting.

Matt Drudge’s criticism of Hot Air makes no sense, which is why it has to be personal.

All of this changes on Wednesday when the new Ann Coulter column comes out each week.

JayHaw Phrenzie on March 19, 2007 at 4:29 PM

Weird. It’s unfortunate Drudge would pick a bone with HotAir and Michelle. Completely unnecessary. He’s even linked to HotAir stories before! He should’ve just kept his frustration to himself. Both sites are good and if he feels his traffic is threatened, then maybe he should innovate a little. Don’t burn bridges with people who are on the same side. I’d check out a Drudge video blog too if he started one. Meanwhile, kudos to Michelle and the HotAir staff for their great work! Citizen journalism is democracy in action!

Take a bong hit for jesus and chill out, Matt.

tree hugging sister on March 19, 2007 at 4:30 PM

I never read Drudge. back in the day I used to search for news through gopher and the newsgroups. When I stumbled accross drudge it was an innovative site, in that he compiled the news for you. But the problem I had with that was, the news was filtered through his bias. Nothign wrong with that, we all pick and choose the news we view. Its just that I prefered to hunt down my own stories. Now that Hotair is aroun I come here alot. Sometimes for the news, but more often then not for the commentary. Their are a lot of smart people here, and that is part of what makes this site so good. Even people I amy not agree with usually have a good point. Allah does a great job as does Bryan and the rest of the crew. Michelle, as always, exceeds the bar created by the MSM and shows them that class, poise and dignity can be portrayed over a screen.

Perhaps Drudge is feeling left behind. The tech that he helped mainstream has moved past him. The new generation of V-loggers is here, and HA is in the front of the pack. Be an adult and take your bows Matt. You did good in your day but either grow with the net or pass on your baton to the new generation.

Wyrd on March 19, 2007 at 4:31 PM

I will say that you do a good job reporting news, but you do tend to have a THIS IS IT mind set in your reporting. i agree with alot said here but it is not a site where disagreement is met with respect. just my thoughts. remember i love the site.

kara26 on March 19, 2007 at 4:32 PM

In fact, if it wasn’t for the constant CoulterHate around here, this website would be perfect.

I think Hot Air is a good Center-Right site, but catch the sight of any good Ann quote and AP and the rest of you scurry for PC cover like little liberal mice. Grow some backbone, otherwise keep it up!

JayHaw Phrenzie on March 19, 2007 at 4:32 PM

I dont often post comments here (mostly because by the time I get to read the articles and comments, a vast majority of you here have already said my piece for me,gmti), however, I have to say, since AllahP blessed me with a login account, that HA has been my primary web based outlet for news (and often mirth). Once in a while I drop by Drudge, but, IMHO, its rather dull. And I like my news “meat” to be rare! Thank you, to all at HA for the terrific job, keep it up!!! Dont let the barbs of the disgruntled get under your skin, they are less than the dust beneath your shoes.

mrfixit on March 19, 2007 at 4:32 PM

Drudge has long hated blogs, except for Rosie O’Donnel’s crackpot rants which he apparantly reads for amusement, so this is no shock. Drudge is also losing out to sites like Fark and Digg.

His readership is basically getting torn away from him in a million directions, and he needs to either make radical changes, get some big scoops or drudgereport will die of a thousand cuts.

HotAir just provides a big, somewhat soft target, on top of that, I’m betting he knows a lot of the readers are former Drudge readers. That said I doubt he’d go after Fark like he did HotAir and Malkin, they’d tear him apart.

Bad Candy on March 19, 2007 at 4:34 PM

Drudge is defending his woman, perhaps forgetting that he is attacking comrades-in-arms. Too bad.

Maybe he is concerned with declining site traffic. I used to make Drudge my first stop. Now I only visit once a week to link to columnists he lists. Most of my time is spent at HA. Drudge is feeling threatened by the new kids in town….

Mallard T. Drake on March 19, 2007 at 4:36 PM

That said, Ace of Spades is my first stop, even though Ace doesn’t usually post till noon or later.

Bad Candy on March 19, 2007 at 4:36 PM

Michelle, Matt can’t sing. (Look at that, 4 words and I solved the mystery.)

Michelle, Allah, Brian, Ian and Robert are all doing a fantastic job here and around the world. Don’t let this stupid blurt get you down.

I still gloss over Drudge occasionally checking a story but most of it is just headline candy. (I personally like the big old fashion cop-siren gifs.)

But Hot Air, LGF and Hammy Ham Ham Ham are my faves.

You mean “this is not it”?

Just want to shout out to Drudge. I know you are reading every one of these…you egotistical bastard.

You are slipping sliding away…the times they are a changin…hasta la vista baby.

Enjoy it while you can, all of the whining won’t bring it back.

right2bright on March 19, 2007 at 4:40 PM

I rarely visit Drudge. Hot Air and MichelleMalkin dot com are my first two and last two stops of the day.

So, when and where will the First Anniversary Party be??? Hmmmm?

Zorro on March 19, 2007 at 4:41 PM

Hot Air is my first stop with LGF running a close second.

Bald man that needs to wear a lame hat all the time should not be throwing bananas

Hening on March 19, 2007 at 4:43 PM

That said I doubt he’d go after Fark like he did HotAir and Malkin, they’d tear him apart.

He knows that if he went after Fark, he’d end up being the victim of tomorrow’s Photoshop contest.

Targeting conservatives is always the safer bet.

Dave Shay on March 19, 2007 at 4:44 PM

“…circa 1980s web design” haha! That pretty much nailed it.

Where does Matt come off dissing HotAir and the way y’all display content? All his site is, is a bunch of hyperlinks and a couple of screencaps. That’s it. Granted, he’s a biggie on the internets…but like you said, HotAir is in the top 30 Technocrati. And Michelle & HotAir is labled as “spam” on Digg…that’s like a gold star!

Don’t know why Drudge would say that…perhaps a little jealousy?

JetBoy on March 19, 2007 at 4:45 PM

I’ve always found “Drudge” entertaining but I certainly wouldn’t call it a sophisticated media outlet.

In fact, if it wasn’t for the constant CoulterHate around here, this website would be perfect.

JayHaw Phrenzie on March 19, 2007 at 4:32 PM

My feeling exactly. I too hate Ann Coulter, but I just couldn’t find anyone who really got it, if you know what I mean…
So, after HuffPo, and Kos and DU, I came to HotAir, where Ann Coulter gets what’s coming to her…

JayHaw Phrenzie on March 19, 2007 at 5:04 PM

I think AP is Mr. Moose.

Jim Treacher on March 19, 2007 at 5:08 PM

I can’t imagine why Drudge would attack considering his roots, so to speak. I usually get a lot of my video info at Ms. Underestimated’s but stop by here for other updates.

I think it was wrong but agree with the person who said he would love to have Drudge bash his site. I have written a post about Drudge and sent it to him and he still would not slam me. I could use the traffic that would generate. Are you out there Matt? Slam my site, please! (Big Dog’s Weblog)

Guess I don’t rate.

Big Dog on March 19, 2007 at 5:11 PM

I like Drudge personally.

But I don’t get what the deal is.
Maybe someone pissed him off?
Do we really know the whole story because it doesn’t sound like Mr. Drudge to me?

Just a thought

lgodfrey88 on March 19, 2007 at 5:11 PM

Add me to the list of HA first-stoppers, and multiple daily visitors. With few exceptions content is fresh, smart, witty, diverse – well worth the time in other words. The last few times I went to Drudge I scanned dated headlines and left.

Better pay attention to your own woes Matt.

This site repeats a lot of the Coulterhate, you gotta admit that.

I don’t think it’s wise to enter a pissing contest with Drudge. Just saying.

Niko on March 19, 2007 at 5:19 PM

But I don’t get what the deal is.
Maybe someone pissed him off?

I think drudge is tired of everyone stomping in his play ground. He used to be (for a long time) first to get everything “out there” – now he’s a single voice among money. I’d be kinda tweaked too. He is the original “mainstream” blogger after all.

JayHaw Phrenzie on March 19, 2007 at 5:04 PM

Most of the comments by HotAir staff are negative toward Coulter’s comments, even though they are almost always dead on. She might be a bit obnoxious in her delivery, but she is always accurate.

Gregor on March 19, 2007 at 5:27 PM

Drudge’s singular contribution is that he gets first dibs on stories under development in the mainstream media leaking like a sieve and publishes them.

Monica Lewinsky was Newsweek’s scoop, but Drudge got the leak and put it up.

Every Drudge “scoop” fits this mold.

He has few strong acknowledged committed positions, although he’s fiercely pro-Life, if I recall correctly.

billy on March 19, 2007 at 5:34 PM

It seems Matt Drudge–Internet pioneer, New Media godfather, and tech entrepreneur–has a grudge against little ol’ Hot Air.

Michelle,

You and the Hot Air gang have stolen Drudge’s thunder.

Drudge used to be the hottest news thing on the internet, but now Hot Air is sparking a new trend. A trend Drudge can’t keep up with.

Lawrence on March 19, 2007 at 5:35 PM

(You would think someone with a website design circa 1980 might appreciate our priorities.)

His website definitely has to be brought into the 21st century. It’s just plain drab.

Drudge brags over the fact that he has thousands of sources world-wide he can utilize, but I rarely see them. His site and radio show are more interested in tabloid news and, at times, he’ll go days without updating his site.

He seems to have caught MSM-envyitis.

pocomoco on March 19, 2007 at 5:36 PM

Substance beats style. I don’t come here because I am in love with Michelle or Hot Air, I come here to get the news, or at least some of it. Drudge used to deliver; not so much. I still hit him once a day, but Hot Air and MM I check 4 or 5 times a day.

And maybe I am in love with Michelle. Just a little. At least it ain’t Allah.

Texan on March 19, 2007 at 5:40 PM

Me thinks someone is a little miffed at himself for not being quicker to adapt to new Internet formats for news. Hot air rocks!

shellyanne on March 19, 2007 at 5:42 PM

Back in ‘the day’ I used to hit his site several times a day, if not more. He was THE source and if there was any news out there, he would likely have it first. Nowadays, it’s just links that seem to never change particulalrly on the weekend and ‘breaking news’ is a long ago memory. What was the last bit of news that he broke? Kerry’s ’supposed’ affair? Drudge is no longer the man to see for all the news fit to print (and that which might not be) and his childish petulance is showing.

dustoffmom on March 19, 2007 at 5:42 PM

Besides … it’s “teh Internets” not “the Internets”.

mojo on March 19, 2007 at 5:48 PM

Somebody enlighten me: I really don’t understand the basic substance of Drudge’s criticisms.

What exactly is he saying?

I’m asking sincerely. In all that babbling, I didn’t see a substantive point. Someone with a grasp of English, spell out what he’s saying, please.

There is no “basic substance” to his rant. His site is tired and he’s trying to stir up some controversy by attacking someone whose achievements have so far surpassed his own that he can’t compete legitimately. Think what Rosie and the Trumpster lowered themselves to do to boost their shows’ ratings.

BTW, I tuned in to hear Drudge on the radio ONCE. I haven’t been that bored since I had the chicken-pox. He didn’t seem to have an original thought. Hearing him droll on that night made me think what a mistake it was for him to come out from behind the curtain of his web site. He’s clearly not equipped for that kind of exposure. Major loss of “street cred” IMHO.

Drudgery is in panic mode. HA has blown him away and his only way to stay relevant is to attack Michele personally ala Olber-rated’s daily pick of O’Reilly as his “Worst Person in the World”. No worries. Matt, like Keith, is soooo 2 jihads ago…

I can’t help myself, as an avid fan of The Captain, I have to ask: If Bryan is Mr. Green Jeans, then who is Grandfather Clock, Bunny Rabbit, Dancing Bear, and Mr. Moose?
