March Madness: Open Thread

posted at 8:34 pm on March 16, 2007 by Bryan

The Dukies are OUT. Out, I tell you. Texas is keeping it too close at the half. Texas A&M is set to take on Louisville. Will Kansas take on Kentucky or Villanova in round 2?

Gonzaga? Done in the first round.

Here’s a bracket that updates as the games progress. Comment and trash talk below.

By the way, did you hear that Duke is out? Bwahahahaha!

Update: Texas wins by a dozen.

Blowback

Go NMSU!!!

Opinionnation on March 16, 2007 at 8:39 PM

So when does college football start again?

EnochCain on March 16, 2007 at 8:40 PM

Go Terps.

Ian on March 16, 2007 at 8:40 PM

Terps in, Dukies out. Bwahahahahaha!

Bryan on March 16, 2007 at 8:41 PM

For those that dont know CBS is broadcasting games on the net. I have been bouncing between games here online for the past few hours

William Amos on March 16, 2007 at 8:46 PM

Bah, my team’s out already, though I doubt we would have gone to the sweet 16.

However, I must note that the anti-”midmajor” bias is horrible. Too bad UNLV didn’t bow out like ESPN wanted. :D

Vanceone on March 16, 2007 at 8:52 PM

As a white man, I feel bad Duke got bloodied up by a bunch of thugs.
Is that bad?

freakagriep on March 16, 2007 at 8:55 PM

I hope you didn’t jinx the Horns or I’ll hold you responsible!

Drtuddle on March 16, 2007 at 9:04 PM

Wahoowa! Go Virginia!

CR UVa on March 16, 2007 at 9:10 PM

Yeah baby, ’bout time there’s a March Madness thread. Best annual sporting event IMO. The tourney so far has been *relatively* lackluster, especially yesterday, but there’s been some good ones today.

I can’t see Kevin Durant letting his team lose tonight…

Patriot33 on March 16, 2007 at 9:22 PM

Yawn. Wake me up at halftime of the national championship game.

Labamigo on March 16, 2007 at 9:45 PM

Go Horns go!

I got to see Durant play at one home game this year. He’s sumpin’ else.

TexasDan on March 16, 2007 at 9:56 PM

Slightly off-topic but I’m wondering why so few conservatives seem to like basketball…it is arguably the second most popular sport in the country, yet I find myself in a minority among my conservative compatriots. In fact, it seems deliberately ignored (e.g. I once heard Hannity list sports he liked, he named about 8, and didn’t even mention basketball). Anybody want to explain this to me?

Patriot33 on March 16, 2007 at 10:13 PM

Patriot33 on March 16, 2007 at 10:13 PM

I lost my interest in basketball after Alabama imploded.

EnochCain on March 16, 2007 at 10:15 PM

Basketball rules down here in tobacco road. We all unite and pull for the ACC come tournament time. Yes, even Duke.

Valiant on March 16, 2007 at 10:45 PM

Don’t ask me, I’m from Indiana where basketball rules across all religious and political lines.
And I wouldn’t put much stock in Hannity’s views on sports; I once heard him say, sincerely, that soccer isn’t a sport. I’m no a soccer fan, but that was more than a little ridiculous.

tikvah on March 16, 2007 at 11:07 PM

Well I am from Alabama where football rules so I only have a passing interest in basketball I guess you could say.

TexasDan on March 16, 2007 at 9:56 PM

Durant is pretty awesome. It is unfortunate that The Horns will have to get beat again by The JHawks in the final four.

If I am wrong, I’ll have let you Horns fans choose what brand of crow I eat.
;)

Lawrence on March 16, 2007 at 11:14 PM

Good job by the Horns tonight against a pesky NM team. Of course, it’s basketball, and everybody knows that the two most important sports at UT are:

1) Football
2) Spring Football Practice

thirteen28 on March 16, 2007 at 11:18 PM

I love Durant and kind of want to see him carry Texas deep, but a big part of me says Longhorn Nation isn’t worthy.

Patriot33 on March 17, 2007 at 12:00 AM

Go Ducks! Not a good game today though…

shooten on March 17, 2007 at 12:44 AM

The Longhorns can truthfully say that they beat the Aggies (to be politically correct, they are Agro-Americans, not Aggies).

Blasphemer!

SouthernDem on March 17, 2007 at 1:34 AM

The Oregon Quack Attack is still flying, though at a much lower altitude than I would prefer. Hopefully they are just getting warmed up and will return to the form they showed when they scorched the Pac-10 tournament. Here’s to the demise of the tournament “darlings”: Winthrop.

Mallard T. Drake on March 17, 2007 at 2:11 AM

So when does college football start again?

Soon I hope.

balderdash on March 17, 2007 at 9:15 AM

Hook ‘em!! As a diehard fan, I’m excited. But, as someone who lives in Corpus Christi, I’m a bit saddened at the Islander’s loss. It would have been fun to watch them go all the way.

pullingmyhairout on March 17, 2007 at 9:47 AM

Go Syracuse!

Oops, The Selection Committee left out my team and invited Stanford to the tournament. Ouch!

fogw on March 17, 2007 at 10:16 AM

IMO, this is the best sporting event in America, and the first four days of the tournament are the best days in sport. Next week’s games and the Final Four are almost anti-climactic to me.

I picked Florida in my pools. A vanilla choice for sure, but after making more provocative picks in other years and finishing dead last, you try to learn from it.

asc85 on March 17, 2007 at 11:47 AM

I agree with a columnist I was reading who said that college football is the best sport around because the entire season is the tourney.

EnochCain on March 17, 2007 at 1:13 PM

Where the winner is decided on computers and polls, and only a handful of teams even have a chance at the title at the start of the season. Whereas in college basketball even the little guy has a shot at taking down the big boys, and everyone gets their shot (whether it’s in their conference tourney or in the big dance). And I don’t think an entire season can be considered an event.

Patriot33 on March 17, 2007 at 2:14 PM

Patriot33 on March 17, 2007 at 2:14 PM

I will agree with you about the computer polls etc….time for a playoff!

EnochCain on March 17, 2007 at 3:06 PM

Durant is mature beyond his age. I was surprised in an interview where he said he had never scored more than 30 pts in a game unitl he came to college. He must have been a team player in high school. Yeah I love the horns and it’s true the Fans don’t travel for their basketball team like they do for the football team but the Horns are building a basketball tradition!
Durant is the best player in College.

Drtuddle on March 17, 2007 at 3:20 PM

Open thread right ?

Another Global Warming lie debunked !!

The Cascade mountains are a major mountain range of western North America, extending from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon to Northern California.

“Global Warmers” have been telling us for years that the snowpack in the Cascades has shrank by 50 % in the last half-century. This is a HUGE LIE !

Mark Albright lost his position as a Washington state associate climatologist when he pointed this out, even thought his colleagues all quickly agreed that the 50 percent number was wrong. What’s the real number …. well they can’t agree, but they all agree it is much… much lower.

Once again the “Global Warmers” do all that they can to stop the debate because they know whenever the facts meet the light of day, they lose.

Maxx on March 17, 2007 at 3:54 PM

Hey, Ohio State: that was quite a survival show you put on this afternoon. Thanks for keeping my bracket intact.

flutejpl on March 17, 2007 at 3:56 PM

come on michigan state. keep it close at least.

wryteacher on March 17, 2007 at 4:22 PM

C’mon Sparty!

freebird on March 17, 2007 at 6:41 PM

Every game today has been a barn burner. It’s awesome, baby! And yes, go Sparty! Take down those losers at UNC (if Duke can’t win, UNC losing would be silver lining for me).

Patriot33 on March 17, 2007 at 8:41 PM

UNLV, let’s see the glory days return.

Mojave Mark on March 17, 2007 at 11:46 PM

Purdue played tough but in the end the better team won!

Go Gators!!!!!

conservativecaveman on March 18, 2007 at 5:38 PM

Good-bye to texas university.

Typhoon on March 18, 2007 at 7:02 PM

I hope Durant goes to the league this year…really excited to see how he does there.

Patriot33 on March 18, 2007 at 9:03 PM

Well ND went down in flames, but I still have Georgetown and Pitt to root for!! Kansas looks tough; think Florida can be had.
