[...] Jon Swift responds to a Fred Thompson article which attacked Gandhi for his ”un-American” non-violent ways. According to Thompson, Gandhi, who led India to independence through non-violent civil disobedience, “is pretty much the symbol of the anti-war movement.” Thompson knows this because members of Code Pink, an anti-war group protesting in front of the home of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, have erected a papier-mâché statue of Gandhi and some people have held up signs saying “What Would Gandhi Do?” at anti-war demonstrations. While some people might dismiss these protesters as fringe elements of the anti-war movement, Thompson knows that they represent the heart and soul of liberalism, and that the only way to beat them is to knock their papier-mâché Gandhi down. “At what point is it okay to fight dictators like Saddam or the al Qaeda terrorists who want to take his place?” asks Thompson. “It turns out that the answer, according to Gandhi, is NEVER.” [...]

Non-violent resistance only works if your oppressor is kind-hearted.

How freakin' often does THAT happen?

Even Ghandi realized that, too bad his disciples (particularly the crystal-gripping hippies) didn't quite catch the distinction.

Ghandi's comments on Jewish and Chinese victims or their respective brutal oppressors, on the other hand, sounds like they came out of the mouth of a pacifist, possibly the lowest of creatures, or at the very best enablers and supporters of the lowest of creatures.

I know many of you already have but we need all the tonnage we can bring to bear! It's also a good clearing house for the latest articles, comments and even rumors on an FDT candidacy.
I also know that most everybody that posts here is pretty well read and will be able to add to the knowledge base there(Entelechy, if you aren't there already, why not?)

Poor Al Gore……Tennessee may finally have their first President.

Let us not forget Andrew Johnson. But, yeah, I'm giddy as a school girl at the prospect of a Thompson presidency.
I heard the Paul Harvey thing today at lunch and swooned. Really...swooned. But not in a ghey way or anything. I think my corset was just too tight.

Gandhi was non-violent, not pacifist. The difference, I grant, is subtle. The pacifist runs away from the battle, the non-violent run to the battle and throw themselves on the bayonets.

Gandhi on non-violence

"I have been repeating over and over again that he who cannot protect himself or his nearest and dearest or their honour by non-violently facing death may and ought to do so by violently dealing with the oppressor. He who can do neither of the two is a burden. He has no business to be the head of a family. He must either hide himself, or must rest content to live for ever in helplessness and be prepared to crawl like a worm at the bidding of a bully.

The strength to kill is not essential for self-defence; one ought to have the strength to die. When a man is fully ready to die, he will not even desire to offer violence. Indeed, I may put it down as a self-evident proposition that the desire to kill is in inverse proportion to the desire to die. And history is replete with instances of men who, by dying with courage and compassion on their lips, converted the hearts of their violent opponents.

Nonviolence cannot be taught to a person who fears to die and has no power of resistance. A helpless mouse is not nonviolent because he is always eaten by pussy. He would gladly eat the murderess if he could, but he ever tries to flee from her. We do not call him a coward, because he is made by nature to behave no better than he does.

But a man who, when faced by danger, behaves like a mouse, is rightly called a coward. He harbors violence and hatred in his heart and would kill his enemy if he could without hurting himself. He is a stranger to nonviolence. All sermonizing on it will be lost on him. Bravery is foreign to his nature. Before he can understand nonviolence, he has to be taught to stand his ground and even suffer death, in the attempt to defend himself against the aggressor who bids fair to overwhelm him. To do otherwise would be to confirm his cowardice and take him further away from nonviolence.

Whilst I may not actually help anyone to retaliate, I must not let a coward seek shelter behind nonviolence so-called. Not knowing the stuff of which nonviolence is made, many have honestly believed that running away from danger every time was a virtue compared to offering resistance, especially when it was fraught with danger to one's life. As a teacher of nonviolence I must, so far as it is possible for me, guard against such an unmanly belief.

Self-defence....is the only honourable course where there is unreadiness for self-immolation.

Though violence is not lawful, when it is offered in self-defence or for the defence of the defenceless, it is an act of bravery far better than cowardly submission. The latter befits neither man nor woman. Under violence, there are many stages and varieties of bravery. Every man must judge this for himself. No other person can or has the right."

Listening to Thompson's audio reminded me of someone. Do we have another "great communicator" coming along, a "thoughtful conservative" whose words America and the world can trust and believe in?

Thompson / Steele? I know I was very impressed with Steele so I could go for that.

Oh, its newton leroy.

Thats worse than hussein obama.

triple on March 15, 2007 at 3:30 PM

At least he never tried to pull a Hillary and make up claims that his parents named him after the Fig Newton.

Another advantage that occurred to me about FDT: Can you imagine how the uppity libs would squeal, having another Southerner in office? That sure seems to bother them with Bush, although somehow it wasn't a problem when Carter or Clinton were in office. But then selective outrage is typical of the Left.

Thompson is good. But he's smart and is going to just sit back for a while and watch the early-declarers fight it out. Why spend money now, when everyone knows him? There's no reason to run a publicity campaign that Romney, Rudy, Hunter, Huckabee, or any of the others do. McCain is already well-known, but he'll never get past the base.

It's the same with Newt, although I'll say he'll lose the election. People have short memories, but they still hate him for going after Clinton, and being rich, and having a name like Newt, and saying Social Security will wither on the vine. He's a smart guy, but he's unelectable, and I think he knows it and will stay out of the election altogether.

My prediction: you'll have McCain totally collapse in two months, followed by a Romney/Rudy slugfest for a whole month, as they'll be perceived frontrunners. Newt will not declare, but Thompson will, and he'll draw support from a surging Hunter, allowing a four-way race between Romney, Rudy, Thompson, and Hunter. What we'll see is a divide between social and fiscal conservatives and a contentious and expensive race.

The good news? You can expect Hunter to be a VP candidate to any of the top three. He's a solid conservative. Rudy & Romney need someone like him to offset their socially liberal policies and appease some of the Religious Right. Thompson is smart, but he's not going to accept a second-fiddle role (he's too old), so he either gets the nomination or he doesn't get anything.

Mmmm yeah, that’s the stuff. Imagine that sort of thing as the weekly presidential radio address.

It would be nice to find out. We should start a petition that we can sign asking Thompson to run.

I loved it!
I heard him yesterday and today in for Paul Harvey on a new (to me) talk radio station, and I loved everything he was talking about. Looking forward to tomorrow's showing.
I heart Fred Thompson :)
