Audio: Fred Thompson wonders, what would Gandhi do?

Mmmm yeah, that’s the stuff. Imagine that sort of thing as the weekly presidential radio address.

Here’s Gandhi on the Holocaust. And here’s video of chickens coming home to roost outside Madam Speaker’s house. Click the image to watch.

Oh lord, that’s bloody fantastic. Please let Sen. Thompson be our next President. God knows we need someone who is that articulate and has that Reaganesque communication style back in the White House.

SillyRyno on March 15, 2007 at 1:05 PM

Ooooh, that’s some strong stuff. I had no idea Gandhi was just another anti-semitic jackass.

Limerick on March 15, 2007 at 1:06 PM

At the Pelosi link…

“Right now the small group needs your support, people to relieve them for an hour break, people to bring food (wine and cheese appreciated!)”

Good lord, the thought of these CodePink’ers taking a wine and cheese break from protesting is the perfect microcosm of what they truly represent.

Wow, that audio clip was just great. Fred Thompson is rapidly becoming The Man. And Gandhi was not only anti-Semitic, he was a pussy.

Fred definitely ought to run. On top of his conservative credentials, he’s got a gravitas we haven’t seen in ages.

One of the best things about him is that he has practically no skeletons in his closet. He just screams “Middle America”.

Imagine if he were to debate Hillary in the 2008 election. The American people would HAVE to choose Freddie just based on the sheer tone of his voice compared to Hillary’s.

Hillary’s shrillness vs. Thompson’s smooth Alabama drawl.

SillyRyno on March 15, 2007 at 1:42 PM

Great audio. We need to hear more from and about Thompson and soon. Rudy is the frontrunner but put Thompson in and I will contribute $$$$ based on everything I have heard from him.

In the meantime and if Hillary wins, buy ammo now for the possible impending invasion should Thompson not run/win.

Gandhi was taught a hard lesson after the British finally left, though he did not learn it.

The Muslims he allied with promptly declared they wanted to separate from India and expelled all Hindus from the now Pakistan. The cross migration of millions was violent and bloody. Yes Pakistan WAS India only a few decades ago.

To tell Jews to “just lay down and die” is the very definition of anti-semitism. Declaring that one has friend who are Jews, is like having friends who are cows – where’s my hamburger.

CrimsonFisted on March 15, 2007 at 2:11 PM

My idea of a “dream” 2008 ticket would be Fred Thompson and John Kasich. They are both DC outsiders who know their way around Washington and served very well in congress. Fred seems to embody all we need in a President and John is young, smart and dynamic.

Against any of the potential Dems I don’t think they could possibly lose but I can’t say that about any other choice.

I used to think about Condi as president until I heard her saying she supported amnesty for illegals.

Of course, as a vice-president, she wouldn’t be making the call on that issue, would she?

I’m hoping this thread moves over to the top picks column soon. Then keep it there until November 2008.

Limerick on March 15, 2007 at 2:13 PM

Thats great. Reminds me of something I heard a great man once say… “You may feel it uncivilized to commit violence in order to survive and that is fine with me. But I prefer survival so just stay out of my way or be prepared to duck when I shoot.”
This also reminds me quite a bit of Mark Steyn. Sounds like an example he might draw upon.
I’d vote for this guy. Does he have any negatives aside from the lack of name recognition? Skeletons in the closet?

kiakjones on March 15, 2007 at 2:03 PM

Sorry, Rice would be a deal breaker for me… No Charisma, and her stance on the Middle East has me befuddled. IMO she is part of the Bush problem, not part of the solution.

Romeo13 on March 15, 2007 at 2:16 PM

Gingrich would never play second fiddle, and Rice has angered too many conservatives since becoming SoS by kissing butts all over the world.

Before Thompson expressed an interest in running, I was willing to support Newt because he is extremely intelligent and more conservative than McCain, Guiliani and Romney. However, Newt does have some baggage, and he is the penultimate politician. I’m sick of politicians. I want an American patriot for president.

Fred Thompson seems like a dream come true. Pray–PRAY–that he runs and there are no skeletons to dig up. I think he could pull in votes from both sides of the aisle, and pull off a landslide.

Sorry AP: Hope–HOPE–that he runs…

Gandhi was taught a hard lesson after the British finally left, though he did not learn it.

No he wasn’t. The inevitable civil war was brewing for years and Hindu-Muslim animosity was promoted by the British because they were reluctant to leave. Read the article I linked above. Here’s the relevant part:

It is curious that when he was assassinated, many of his warmest admirers exclaimed sorrowfully that he had lived just long enough to see his life work in ruins, because India was engaged in a civil war which had always been foreseen as one of the byproducts of the transfer of power. But it was not in trying to smooth down Hindu-Moslem rivalry that Gandhi had spent his life.

He said the same thing to the Chinese victims of Japanese agression. Does that mean hes anti-Chinese? Or could it mean..drumroll..he’s espousing pacifist beliefs?

THOMPSON/STEELE IN 2008!!!

Hell yea! But how to get Steele and Obama in a debate? With Obama and Clinton at war, a VP spot may not be likely for Obama. On the other hand if some surprise Dem surges to the front, maybe.

Don’t count out Al Gore just yet.

Agrippa2k on March 15, 2007 at 3:05 PM

Whether or not Ghandi was anti-semetic or just a little wussy pacifist, we should all be able to agree on one thing – he was wrong.

Dead wrong.

thirteen28 on March 15, 2007 at 3:06 PM

I don’t get the “ideal candidate” list.

The ideal republican candidate is one that is electable. Newt is not, if only for having the first name “Newt”. What is that short for anywyas?

Fred is, if anything else, wildly likeable and he looks like a president should. He is immensely electable, moreso than guliani or romney.

Thank you Kadnine for the link. I liked this best:

Gandhi probably wouldn’t approve, but I can live with that.

Duplicate fromt he H. Clinton thread, but applicable:

Last night an incredibly intelligent, left-leaning, but sane, friend called and after a while of yakking said “are you preparing yourself for a H. Clinton or Obama presidency?” Very calmly I replied “Neither”. “How so?” she quipped. “Because it will be Fred Thompson”. Folks, the long silence and shock which followed was unbelievable. This person is not aflicted with BDS and is truly a thinking type.

Perhaps why the leftie blogs are mostly silent on this possibility. Granted, that we might be a bit too giddy too – but, heh, “The Audacity of Hope”.

Entelechy on March 15, 2007 at 3:51 PM

Fred Thompson, I want to vote for you. Get in the race.

I like Guiliani in a lot of ways, but, if Thompson enters the race, I’d like Guiliani only for VP. His refuting of pacifism at all costs is absolutely brilliant, and he said it in an amazingly frank way. Both aspects are refreshing.

flutejpl on March 15, 2007 at 3:56 PM

I think he is more Vice presidential. I think he ads the safety factor that will make people feel good about any problems they might have with the main contenders.

He will be a the guy that gets conservatives to vote. He is a very important individual as long as he didn’t do anything crazy while he wasn’t married in the 90′s. He has a kid now to so that can’t hurt.

Thompson is good. But he’s smart and is going to just sit back for a while and watch the early-declarers fight it out. Why spend money now, when everyone knows him? There’s no reason to run a publicity campaign that Romney, Rudy, Hunter, Huckabee, or any of the others do. McCain is already well-known, but he’ll never get past the base.

It’s the same with Newt, although I’ll say he’ll lose the election. People have short memories, but they still hate him for going after Clinton, and being rich, and having a name like Newt, and saying Social Security will wither on the vine. He’s a smart guy, but he’s unelectable, and I think he knows it and will stay out of the election altogether.

My prediction: you’ll have McCain totally collapse in two months, followed by a Romney/Rudy slugfest for a whole month, as they’ll be perceived frontrunners. Newt will not declare, but Thompson will, and he’ll draw support from a surging Hunter, allowing a four-way race between Romney, Rudy, Thompson, and Hunter. What we’ll see is a divide between social and fiscal conservatives and a contentious and expensive race.

The good news? You can expect Hunter to be a VP candidate to any of the top three. He’s a solid conservative. Rudy & Romney need someone like him to offset their socially liberal policies and appease some of the Religious Right. Thompson is smart, but he’s not going to accept a second-fiddle role (he’s too old), so he either gets the nomination or he doesn’t get anything.

At least he never tried to pull a Hillary and make up claims that his parents named him after the Fig Newton.

Another advantage that occurred to me about FDT: Can you imagine how the uppity libs would squeal, having another Southerner in office? That sure seems to bother them with Bush, although somehow it wasn’t a problem when Carter or Clinton were in office. But then selective outrage is typical of the Left.

Limerick on March 15, 2007 at 5:40 PM

Gandhi was non-violent, not pacifist. The difference, I grant, is subtle. The pacifist runs away from the battle, the non-violent run to the battle and throw themselves on the bayonets.

Gandhi on non-violence

“I have been repeating over and over again that he who cannot protect himself or his nearest and dearest or their honour by non-violently facing death may and ought to do so by violently dealing with the oppressor. He who can do neither of the two is a burden. He has no business to be the head of a family. He must either hide himself, or must rest content to live for ever in helplessness and be prepared to crawl like a worm at the bidding of a bully.

The strength to kill is not essential for self-defence; one ought to have the strength to die. When a man is fully ready to die, he will not even desire to offer violence. Indeed, I may put it down as a self-evident proposition that the desire to kill is in inverse proportion to the desire to die. And history is replete with instances of men who, by dying with courage and compassion on their lips, converted the hearts of their violent opponents.

Nonviolence cannot be taught to a person who fears to die and has no power of resistance. A helpless mouse is not nonviolent because he is always eaten by pussy. He would gladly eat the murderess if he could, but he ever tries to flee from her. We do not call him a coward, because he is made by nature to behave no better than he does.

But a man who, when faced by danger, behaves like a mouse, is rightly called a coward. He harbors violence and hatred in his heart and would kill his enemy if he could without hurting himself. He is a stranger to nonviolence. All sermonizing on it will be lost on him. Bravery is foreign to his nature. Before he can understand nonviolence, he has to be taught to stand his ground and even suffer death, in the attempt to defend himself against the aggressor who bids fair to overwhelm him. To do otherwise would be to confirm his cowardice and take him further away from nonviolence.

Whilst I may not actually help anyone to retaliate, I must not let a coward seek shelter behind nonviolence so-called. Not knowing the stuff of which nonviolence is made, many have honestly believed that running away from danger every time was a virtue compared to offering resistance, especially when it was fraught with danger to one’s life. As a teacher of nonviolence I must, so far as it is possible for me, guard against such an unmanly belief.

Self-defence….is the only honourable course where there is unreadiness for self-immolation.

Though violence is not lawful, when it is offered in self-defence or for the defence of the defenceless, it is an act of bravery far better than cowardly submission. The latter befits neither man nor woman. Under violence, there are many stages and varieties of bravery. Every man must judge this for himself. No other person can or has the right.”

Non-violent resistance only works if your oppressor is kind-hearted.

How freakin’ often does THAT happen?

Even Ghandi realized that, too bad his disciples (particularly the crystal-gripping hippies) didn’t quite catch the distinction.

Ghandi’s comments on Jewish and Chinese victims or their respective brutal oppressors, on the other hand, sounds like they came out of the mouth of a pacifist, possibly the lowest of creatures, or at the very best enablers and supporters of the lowest of creatures.
