Video: Iraqi police at work

The other day I joked about them working for Sadr in their downtime. Some do, of course, but not all. Check this out.

The video was shot last week during one of the Shiite pilgrimages to Karbala for Arba’een.

It’s nice to see at least some of them aiming.

matd on March 14, 2007 at 9:31 AM

The sooner these guys get their shoot together, the sooner our guys can come home.

Tony737 on March 14, 2007 at 9:32 AM

Cool.

I have a paleocon friend that is so ideologically rigid he cannot wrap his head around the fact that not all Arabs are “savages” and that they have the ability to govern themselves. I have to admit I thought similarly, but reading war bloggers, reading articles about the patriquin plan how it is working etc., and seeing the President not back down have changed my opinion greatly. It is my sincerest hope that at least in Iraq Sunni and Shia can live side by side and the antagonists for both sides jailed and made subject to law and order, Amen.

Theworldisnotenough on March 14, 2007 at 9:37 AM

Good to see that spray and pray is still the order of the day. And that the pilgrims cheer for the apparent show of strength by the IP.

Verbal Abuse on March 14, 2007 at 9:39 AM

I don’t think we can produce enough ammo for these maniacs.

…I think I got that silly wabbit.

right2bright on March 14, 2007 at 9:45 AM

I don’t know – looks like Pallywood to me.

What are they shooting at? Didn’t hear any firing back. Do they have them (bad guys?) surrounded? Looks like the bad guys could just stroll out the back.

Hardly a “SWAT Team” assault. What is with all of the civilians standing around? They don’t look to worried about getting shot.

I’ll watch it again, but it looks doubtful that they are truly engaged in anything meaningful. As far as propaganda goes, if it has the desired positive affect – fine.

Agrippa2k on March 14, 2007 at 10:00 AM

No wonder car bombs are the weapon of choice in that area. None of them have the slightest idea how to use a rifle.

unamused on March 14, 2007 at 10:01 AM

I don’t know who they were lighting up, but boy, they got lit!

james hooker on March 14, 2007 at 10:04 AM

Oh boy that would be HI-larious if it wasn’t so sad. It was like watching 9 years play paint ball. Come on the short guy with the PKM was ridiculous, the damn thing has a bipod for a reason.

Karbala Kops

liberrocky on March 14, 2007 at 10:24 AM

A bunch of guys rockin & rollin at an open field with a bunch of spectators jumping around behind them, none too concerned with the possibility of returned fire.

Please excuse my skeptisism.

bloviator on March 14, 2007 at 10:29 AM

Either whatever they were shooting at wasn’t shooting back or those civilians have a death wish, because they’d have been right in the line of fire.

kmcguire on March 14, 2007 at 10:30 AM

It could be propaganda yes…you have to remember though these are the same civilians that go to the local market everyday when at anytime they could die.

EnochCain on March 14, 2007 at 10:42 AM

For those that are skeptical because there are civilians in the fray, go to YouTube and find a clip of a gun battle in a South American country. You’ll see civilians walking around in the background through the gun battle, etc.. Is that evidence of fakery?

Theworldisnotenough on March 14, 2007 at 11:07 AM

If the gunmen returning fire are as good with guns as those shooting in this film, as a civilian in the area, I wouldn’t worry about getting shot either.

Hoodlumman on March 14, 2007 at 11:21 AM

As for the video, I don’t know what those guys were shooting at…

But as for the link to INDCJournal – Gold. Admiration and hope, right there.

nailinmyeye on March 14, 2007 at 11:28 AM

The LiveLink description says that they are protecting the pilgrims.

nailinmyeye on March 14, 2007 at 11:31 AM

It looks to me that these policemen are showing their “strength” to the locals and the locals love it. This is probably the best thing they can do right now, to gain the trust of the residents right?

Vincenzo on March 14, 2007 at 11:33 AM

Sorry, but that whole thing reeked of Pallywood. You don’t wander around with a friggin’ cameraphone with an AUDIENCE behind you if you’re actually engaged in a gunfight. Unless I’m supposed to believe Arabs are actually that stupid. Please don’t answer that.

And also, I can only hope that these guys have NOT been trained by the US (or any other) military..

Reaps on March 14, 2007 at 11:50 AM

And if I’d bothered to read the comments, I see I’m not the only one smelling Pallywood

Mad props to the RPK rambo guy though.

Reaps on March 14, 2007 at 11:51 AM

Goddammit, that is a PKM too. READ THE COMMENTS, EL REAPZ0R.

Suffice to say this is probably what ‘liberals’ think the NRA is made up of..

Though shalt stop spamming the comments section now.

Reaps on March 14, 2007 at 11:55 AM

Ok, just to add to the skepticism:

All of those reporters and civilians weren’t at all concerned about returning fire?

Do they aim there? It’s like the Iraqi Rambo, or Al Pacino.

Say ‘ello to my lyttle Friend!

amerpundit on March 14, 2007 at 12:03 PM

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying it would be bad. As a matter of fact, best thing the police could do now, is get the trust and awe of the people. Make them feel safe.

amerpundit on March 14, 2007 at 12:07 PM

Loved the reaction of the guy with the heavy machine gun (the PKM?) when the sucker obviously jammed on a belt feed problem a couple shots in…. that’s why you’ve got an a-gunner, dude.

But yeah, this just looks like an uncoordinated shootfest. I couldn’t even see the existence of targets and it was obvious from the behavior of the bystanders that they didn’t expect anyone to shoot back.

jeffshultz on March 14, 2007 at 12:14 PM

It looks like testosterone flowing freely in the form of bullets and nothing more. Nothing wrong with that, of course.

flutejpl on March 14, 2007 at 12:55 PM

Put the broadside of a barn up there. Are they even shooting at anything, or just wasting lead?

PRCalDude on March 14, 2007 at 1:20 PM

Am I the only one not understanding what is going on in that video? What were those guys shooting at? Were they under attack? And if so, why were their dozens if not hundreds of children and journalists and regular people all in the mix jumping around and cheering… rather than tucking and hiding?

Perhaps I’m missing the entire point of the video, because it reminded me of the Paliwood videos where the “freedom fighter” Palis were “fighting” against the overpowering force of Israeli soldiers… only you never see any Israelis and just hundreds of normal civilians running around throwing rocks as back-up to a handful of gunman… then people play getting shot and an ambulance rushes in to pick them up, etc.

Again, it’s possible I just don’t understand the scene… can someone explain this video to me?

RightWinged on March 14, 2007 at 1:51 PM

No wonder civilians get killed there.

In America, if someone opens up with an AK, we R_U_N!

There, they seem to cluster around the shooters.

sigh…

Mazztek on March 14, 2007 at 3:21 PM

No wonder car bombs are the weapon of choice in that area. None of them have the slightest idea how to use a rifle.

unamused on March 14, 2007 at 10:01 AM

Good it means our troops can kill more of them with less of us hit.

Tim Burton on March 14, 2007 at 4:08 PM

Shazamm Pee Wee. Its a damn super ghetto. One guy traded his towel for a ball cap. Cool!

sonnyspats1 on March 14, 2007 at 7:07 PM

That empty open field is a goner for sure.

At the very end the civilian on the right comes preeeety close to the line of fire.

That had to be pure grandstanding. Or perhaps that’s the latest recruitment strategy for the Iraqi police. Sure drew a crowd.

TexasDan on March 14, 2007 at 9:15 PM

Looked like children with guns to me.

Maxx on March 14, 2007 at 9:24 PM

Spray and Pray is the order of the day for Arabs and other Third World armies. I’ve seen it all over the world. Arabs seem to have a particular gene that encourages them to do incredibly stupid things like hang around when guys with guns start showing off.

old_dawg on March 14, 2007 at 9:38 PM

I can’t remember the last time I saw so many Muslims in street clothes hopping around in that mad, chaotic way that they have perfected, and shooting horizontally. So they don’t embarrass themselves somebody really ought to tell them the way you’re supposed to waste ammunition–you’re supposed to be hopping around shooting in the air.

smellthecoffee on March 14, 2007 at 10:48 PM

Something ain’t right here: that ain’t how men trained in any military force fire their automatic weapons. No one with any worthwhile military training runs around like that, in an undisciplined melee, waving with one arm while dischraging bursts of fire with the other. No one seemed to be in coordination with anyone else: no organized movement towards any objective

bogus………

Janos Hunyadi on March 14, 2007 at 11:23 PM

Well now we know why this whole is taking so long.

For real, I spoke to a guy on my plane who had just gotten home from Iraq, training their new army. He said it took months to teach ‘em stuff it only took weeks to teach American recruits. Patience is the key to victory over there.

Tony737 on March 14, 2007 at 11:33 PM

oooops! “this whole THING”! Sorry.

Tony737 on March 14, 2007 at 11:35 PM

Lots of dicipline here folks, note the interlocking fields of fire…. the coordinated advance to the enemy position.
(shaking head)

opiemuyo on March 14, 2007 at 11:55 PM

Ummmmm yeah, so the last time I saw a swat team turning right, I turned left. I certainly didn’t stand right next to them.

Looks like a fun party game though.

MirCat on March 15, 2007 at 3:40 AM

I think I saw Green Helmet Guy in there..

Viper1 on March 15, 2007 at 5:12 AM

No fire discipline! Letting their MG ammo drag in the dirt??!!! No cover and advance to the threat? No coordinated fire?? No leadership directing the flow of battle?? How about a 3 – 5 round burst to conserve ammo, walk the fire to the enemy, keep your barrel from burning out. Asses, complete asses.

I’d say it looks like a bunch of dopey teenage boys playing with guns, but it would be a terrible offense to dopey teenage boys.

After 4 F’n years this is the best we can put on the table? We are in trouble with a capital T.

My teenage boys play paintball with better tactical sense than these nitwits.
