[...] We were doing daily Asgari posts back in March but he’s dropped off the radar since then. The Financial Times published a report last month quoting “friends” of his who believe he willingly defected, but the Atlantic story seems more likely given reports of other Iranian officers mysteriously disappearing around that time. I’m curious to know if it’s just Sunni Arab states in particular or Sunni states generally that are involved in this, given the recent reports of U.S. collusion with a Pakistani terrorist group waging jihad along Iran’s eastern border. We’ll have to wonder thanks to the firewall, but note that prediction about attacks on Iran’s creaky oil infrastructure — it makes a boatload of sense, and the Sunni/Shia tensions in Iraq plus the known presence of AQ fighters inside Iran gives the U.S.-Sunni alliance a convenient scapegoat if and when bombs do start going off at the refineries. digg_url = 'http://hotair.com/archives/2007/05/07/shocka-us-sunni-states-co-sponsoring-covert-ops-inside-iran/';digg_topic = 'political_opinion'; [...]

[...] That’s not the only part of that blockquoted passage that’s already been reported, either. The Telegraph broke the news a week ago about the U.S. warning Britain to be on guard for reprisals after the Irbil raid. For reasons known only to them, the Brits evidently didn’t move to a higher state of alert. The Independent doubtless would say that they would have done so if they knew the true targets of the raid were high-ranking Iranian officials, but that’s three times stupid. First, if Jafari was in fact the target of the raid, then we surely shared that information with the British (particularly given their exposure in southern Iraq, where Iranian influence is greatest). Second, as regular readers of this blog well know, high-ranking Iranian officers have been disappearing regularly. So if the Irbil raid wasn’t enough to make the Brits take precautions, the defections/kidnappings of IRGC generals should have been. [...]

[...] So the picture that’s coming together is this. Iran’s support of terror in Iraq is an open secret. The US is secretly trying to help Iranian generals defect and the Iranians decide to kidnap some “blue-eyed blond-haired officers” to send a message. The message is this: Stop undermining our military or we kill your soldiers on state TV. [...]

Well, turn the lights on, see the roaches scatter.

Of course, you have to be thinking: why wouldn't Bush strike? What does he have to lose? It's not like he can be called worse that Hitler, really. And it's not like Bush invading Iran will make the dem/media wing hate him any more. He's not up for re-election... so why not? If I was an Iranian general, I'd think long and hard whether I would let DinnerJacket take me down with his ship.

The surge in Baghdad is working, the Iranian economy is in a death spiral, the Russians are telling Tehran to pay its debt (threatening what?) ... I'd say the wetness of underwear is becoming general.

Hey Allah,

If it's true that Ziba doesn't have a familial relationship with Asgari, then that just might be good news for you.

As Louis Renault said in Casablanca "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

Or as Sarah Cooper said to Nick Carlton in "The Big Chill", "There's a certain symmetry."

Either Asgari’s personal life was highly “nuanced” or someone’s lying shamelessly here.

Psy-op or is something in the wind? We all have grabbed a blogged headline about this or that terrorist being killed/captured only to find out later it was the press running wild again. Afraid I have the boy-who-cried-wolf syndrome. I hope like hell all this is true but we won't know for sure until 10 years after this war is over(whenever that will be). Question is will the American left give us the time to finish it?

It depends on which idiots you are referring to. It's only a matter of time before the idiots on the left sideline start complaining that somehow, someway these poor guys that are vanishing, are doing so in violation of international law (and they will throw in the Geneva Convention for good measure).

Reminds me of that game where you remove one piece at a time, slowly, one than another. You finally reach the one that everything topples.

Reagan did the same thing, one at a time...then the wall came tumbling down.
