As mentioned above, the Repubs returning from Iraq see things turning around there, and want to corner the Dems to push for failure at a time of success.

Here is my opinion, O’Reilly is the new Cronkite. When he says we are winning in Iraq then public opinion will turn towards victory.

Iraq is the anti-Vietnam.

Petraeus appears to be on the right track and gathering momentum. Congress represents the only real long-term obstacle to success.

Shameful, and, it's the latter on the exit question. The conservatives need to show steel in these debates. The public wants to win, not to go home with the tails between the legs, just because Mr. Reid/cadavre says so.

Exit Answer:

Even if Reid has 50 or 60 votes, he doesn't have 67 (counting Johnson; if he doesn't show for the vote, 2/3 is only 66 without him anyway). The Nancy Boys in the House might have trouble mustering 290.

RE: the exit question

My sense from watching McConnel and Reid on the Hill at their respective press conferences is that Reid's proposals are dead in the water. The Repubs are looking for an opportunity to beat up the Dems in debate. Duncan Hunter and a couple other Repub reps. just got back from Iraq and they think it's working, most importantly the Iraqis are pulling their weight this time, and so their report to the Congressional leadership was probably a factor in this descision.

But the goalposts have already moved. Before it was will the Iraqis do their part, now it's" are we there yet?" whining. Either way, I trust McConnel a hundred times more than Frist to be effective, if not make Reid cry himself to sleep every night while the nutroots try to burn down his house and office.

Things are still looking up for now.

A soldier I converse with in Baqubah, Diyala says it's like whack-a-mole around there with the jihadis lately. But he seems to think it's a sign of the success being had in Al Anbar and elsewhere.

It's like squeezing a tube of toothpaste with the cap on. The stuff is gonna pop out somewhere else eventually. Those additional 700 are there to clean that up.

Exit question: Why has the GOP decided not to filibuster Harry Reid’s Iraq timetable? Afraid to get on the wrong side of an increasingly anti-war public, or do they suspect it’s unnecessary because Reid doesn’t have 50 votes?

They're not blocking the opening of the debate. They can still filibuster against cloture, can they not?
