Video: Shepard Smith endorses man-made global warming

Is that the right word, “endorses”? Endorses in the “subscribes to the theory” sense, not in the “thinks it’s super keen” sense. You know what I mean.

The Freepers are horrified. As I said Saturday, I’m agnostic on the issue, but even so, this clip looks more like an ad for a carbon-offset company than a news segment. No doubt our three left-wing readers would say this is how Fox News looks to them all the time.

Exit question: Won’t somebody please think of the “penguns”?

Update: Hmmm: “NY TIMES PLANS TUESDAY HIT ON GORE, NEWSROOM SOURCES TELL DRUDGE: ‘Scientists argue that Gore’s warnings are full of exaggerated claims and startling errors’… Developing…”

When I hear the words ‘global warming’, it’s like a switch goes off in my head. I can see people’s lips moving, but all I hear is “Blah, blah, blah.”

Matticus Finch on March 12, 2007 at 5:52 PM

Well, now that Shep’s on board, nothing will stop them. Prepare for the apocalypse.

I’m going to buy a whole bunch of pop tarts.

Mibrilane on March 12, 2007 at 5:56 PM

One small (mis)step for Shepard Smith, one giant hit to his credibility.

E L Frederick (Sniper One) on March 12, 2007 at 5:57 PM

What a jackass. Smith, or the Fox staff obviously haven’t done the slighest bit of research into “global warming”. It’s almost a Goracle commercial. Stupid, stupid, stupid … plays right into their hands.

darwin on March 12, 2007 at 5:57 PM

I question the timing.

What did the NYTimes know and when did they know it?

Pre-Oscars or Post-Oscars?

fogw on March 12, 2007 at 5:57 PM

I’ll be interested in what the NYT plans to report on, tomorrow.

amerpundit on March 12, 2007 at 5:58 PM

It is true that data over the last 100 years indicate a 2-3 degree increase in temperature.

However, limited available data over the last 1000 years from the study of ice sheets in Greenland, Iceland and elsewhere indicate that our current temperature increases are well within normal temperature deviations.

I see no point to post links and belabor the argument. Information is readily available on the web. And nothing I say here is going to convince anyone to change their belief in whatever theory about global warming/cooling they cling to.

Lawrence on March 12, 2007 at 5:59 PM

Side note: this really should have been an update to the other Global Warming thread – the one about the British program that thoroughly debunks it all.

Mibrilane on March 12, 2007 at 6:03 PM

Just another reason I stoped watching fox long time ago…they have become NO different that the rest of the MSM.

davy on March 12, 2007 at 6:04 PM

Shep has always been absolute proof that FOX News has no right-wing bias…and yeah, those Freepers are upset…but Shep belongs right where he is. I don’t agree with him…especially on Global Warming, but at least he’s genuine.

Is this what the Nevada Dems didn’t want to be a part of?

JetBoy on March 12, 2007 at 6:05 PM

He better not read this story:

Frostbite Halts Global Warming Trek

Stuck on stupid while stuck on ice.

JammieWearingFool on March 12, 2007 at 6:05 PM

I guess they have to run a looney segment every once in a while. After all, they can’t be fair and balanced without the loons being represented.

Too bad Olbermann does it every night.

E L Frederick (Sniper One) on March 12, 2007 at 6:06 PM

Shepard Smith lost whatever credibility he had during Katrina. This is probably why Fox is doing the story.

forged rite on March 12, 2007 at 6:06 PM

Global warming “theory” is just a tenet of the religion known as environmentalism.

thirteen28 on March 12, 2007 at 6:09 PM

Listen VERY closely he says “Global WarNing” not warming…

I question the timing!

omnipotent on March 12, 2007 at 6:14 PM

If Bush and Shep Smith believe it to be true, it must be!

lorien1973 on March 12, 2007 at 6:18 PM

What the HELL was that? I guess we are really going to have to get that pesky sun turned off now.

kahall on March 12, 2007 at 6:22 PM

Dang… and I kinda like Shep….

Yep… Shep… just like in the Three Stooges apparently…

Nyuck, Nyuck… Nyuck…

Doh!

fogw on March 12, 2007 at 6:23 PM

Do your part in educating Shep on how to become carbon neutral and send him a package of switchgrass seeds!

Dusty on March 12, 2007 at 6:25 PM

I’m not convinced his tone was entirely sincere. It almost sounded like he was intentionally hyping his comments to reflect the foolosophy of those that buy into this trash science (including Mr. Chrome dome). I think he seemed genuine when he commented that the earth is warmer now than a time previous, but almost has somewhat of a condascending tone when he said something to the effect that there’s no question that the cause is man made. I also like the way Mr. Chicken Little threw out statistics “We are something like 99% sure global warming is due to man”, but he side stepped the issue of the percentage of scientists that believe this to be true. This is just another example of how people can manipulate numbers to try to make their point.

rayvet on March 12, 2007 at 6:28 PM

I wonder if the Times piece represents a preemptive strike on behalf of Hilary or Obama to keep Gore out of the race.

mikeyboss on March 12, 2007 at 6:32 PM

So, who at Fox is heavilly invested in carbon offset companies? Shep? His producers? RM???

db on March 12, 2007 at 6:32 PM

Question: Just how many carbon offsets will Rupert and Shep have to buy from Algore’s company?

Aunt B on March 12, 2007 at 6:34 PM

What happened? Did Shep get some cold grits with his breakfast?

MCPO Airdale on March 12, 2007 at 6:37 PM

Shepard Smith is the Jerry Springer of the news industry.

Gregor on March 12, 2007 at 6:43 PM

There is no debate that climate change exists; the “debate” (if you can call it that) is about whether or not it is being caused/strengthened by man.

I recommend everyone read the IPCC report, but if you’re offended by science, please don’t.

Nonfactor on March 12, 2007 at 6:57 PM

In case anyone hasn’t found it yet, CNN has put Glen Beck on opposite Shep Smith. Beck has become the MSM spokesman for the counter-jihad. He’s no Robert Spencer, but he beats the hell out of Shep Smith.

RedWinged Blackbird on March 12, 2007 at 7:02 PM

I stopped the video after 15 seconds because he already has the facts wrong. Polar bear populations have been increasing over the past 20 years.

Resolute on March 12, 2007 at 7:08 PM

Ha! Saying Shep proves Fox has no bias is like saying CNN is balanced because they hired Glenn Beck.
But yeah, Shep is a dope.

SouthernDem on March 12, 2007 at 7:09 PM

I have come up with the ultimate moonbat conspiracy theory.

Global Warming is a farce created by Free Masons trying desperately to regain the power they lost after world war 2 thanks to targeting by the Nazis and Communists. Not only are the Free Masons responsible for the lie they tried to cover up the trail by setting up several noted Jewish politicians for the fall as they were seeking to take over the middle-east via Israel. Global Warming is merely an excuse by Free Masons who want a single world government molded in the image of the Western Christian society to prevent underdeveloped non-Christian countries from making any important advancements in technology and economics.

So here are the general points:
1. Free Masons had been resisted in their quest for a single-world government that began in the beginning of 20th century by the “Noble Nazis” and only after the Allied Victory could the Masons make an attempt to level the playing field. They were worried that developing countries would use German and American technology to cut the gap between societies in technology and so they devised a scheme that would take close to a hundred years before cutting off the lesser countries from their own dreams of independence. The idea that something like CO2, an unavoidable product of National growth, would destroy the world and therefor be banned in poorer countries (of course countries in Europe and North America would still use their production methods, because complaining about it is just as good as doing something about it.) is a genius and evil masterplot to keep rich countries rich and poor countries poor until the eventual takeover.

2. Zionists. The Free Masons knew that if implicated in this plot they would surely be doomed. Alas, the global scapegoat of history, the Jews, could be blamed for almost anything without bigots and zealots even batting an eye. The righteous defenders of the Jews would refuse to believe that the Jews had concocted the idea of Global Warming and the racist hate-mongers would blame them no matter who was ultimately responsible. Israel and Hollywood have both promoted the idea that Global Warming is a growing crisis that will destroy all life on the planet…notice the Jews? Hmmm???

3. The lie has gotten out of hand. Now that the population has taken a hold of the religion of global warming, suggestions emerge that civilized countries cut in half the side-product of CO2 from their factories and cars. Only now does a small minority of scientists speak out against the obvious farce that is Global Warming. They leak such credible evidence that it is a sure sign that the Free Masons have decided to reverse the damage they themselves have caused.

Didn’t Bond have a pengun once?

JasonG on March 12, 2007 at 7:28 PM

Well…I guess FOX can point to this clown to demonstrate that they’re not all from a conservative viewpoint.

He’s a tough price to pay though.

Shep, Shep, Shep…
What can I say? Mississippi boy gone completely nuts…
Shep gets a little excited when all his buds talk to him over weekend.

d1carter on March 12, 2007 at 7:44 PM

Shep has many “liberal” tendencies. Anyone remember his hysterical rants during Katrina?

What troubles me more is that Hugh Fitzgerald at JihadWatch has bought into global warming…now that’s discouraging.

IrishEi on March 12, 2007 at 7:59 PM

This shouldn’t come as a surprise… Shep is a liberal (and rumor has it gay by the way). But seriously, he comes off as a lib more often than not… off the top of my head I recall him broacasting from Memphis (or somewhere down there) during the 2006 election cycle. He casually talked about the anti-Harold Ford JR. ad (you remember, with the supposed Playboy bunny saying “call me!”, etc.) as a racist ad. That was something that would have been upsetting even if it had been CNN because first of all the ad had NOTHING to do with race, but secondly the claims were out there but anyone mentioning them should have said “some groups have claimed the ad has racial undertones” or something to that effect. Even then, an honest reporter would have mocked those who were seeing racism in the ad, because it simply wasn’t there.. but Shep just repeated it like he got his report from Kos.

That’s just one example, and I wish I had the clip because it would make a lot more sense, but that’s jsut off the top of my head. I’ve seen similar displays from Shep dozens of times. Admittedly more on Studio B than on the Fox Report, but not entirely on Studio B.

Update: Hmmm: “NY TIMES PLANS TUESDAY HIT ON GORE, NEWSROOM SOURCES TELL DRUDGE: ‘Scientists argue that Gore’s warnings are full of exaggerated claims and startling errors’… Developing —— Allahpundit

Of course they will… because this helps Al Gore. They will not question if it is actually happening…. they will only question the severity, which adds to the drumbeat that it is indeed happening…. which is of course a lie.

Maxx on March 12, 2007 at 8:29 PM

I am sick and tired of seeing people using pseudo-science in order to push their agenda of how people should live. From global warming to second hand smoke to transfat diets, true science is being corrupted to push agendas. Unfortunately, the American public is so ignorant that these people are able to get away with this crap.

dawgyear on March 12, 2007 at 8:56 PM

From global warming to second hand smoke to transfat diets, true science is being corrupted to push agendas.

I know. It’s a huge conspiracy. Did anyone check to see if the people pushing these pontificated policies have a stake in whether people believe humans cause global warming or second hand smoke causes lung cancer?

Nonfactor on March 12, 2007 at 9:05 PM

Update: Hmmm: “NY TIMES PLANS TUESDAY HIT ON GORE, NEWSROOM SOURCES TELL DRUDGE: ‘Scientists argue that Gore’s warnings are full of exaggerated claims and startling errors’… Developing…”

Maybe scientists who are able to think economically and politically are stricken by the thought that economies crippled by taxes and regulations ostensibly intended to reduce global warming will be ruinous to the funding for their research. It’s time to rein in the latest craze in popular religion.

Kralizec on March 12, 2007 at 9:29 PM

Ol Sheps OK !! Wrong , But OK. Why he and Geraldo were
darn near kissin cousins when doing the disaster reports
during Hurricane Katrina. Not exactly the unbiased reporting that “FOX” prides itself on.

Texyank on March 12, 2007 at 9:47 PM

Oh well, too bad about Shep, he’s a very likable newscaster but I don’t think anybody is going to be suddenly swayed to Global Warming because of what he thinks. There’s simply no science to support Global Warming and that fact it all over the web. I think the “Global Warmers” are very worried and that is why their rhetoric is suddenly becoming so shrill. For them to get what they really want, requires ratification of a treaty and that requires two-thirds of the Senate. They don’t have the votes and the Democrats being in power could be very short lived.

Maxx on March 12, 2007 at 9:47 PM

Of course they will… because this helps Al Gore. They will not question if it is actually happening…. they will only question the severity, which adds to the drumbeat that it is indeed happening…. which is of course a lie.

Maxx on March 12, 2007 at 8:29 PM

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner. The article is out there now. Softest “hit piece” I’ve ever seen. Only brought up the controversy to give reason to post Gore statements. Some arguments are given, but near the end after everyone has quit reading. Very weak/incomplete arguments.

Maxx called this one perfectly.

db on March 12, 2007 at 10:20 PM

In all fairness, Allah, I wouldn’t say the Freepers are horrified. Or surprised. Shep isn’t particularly popular, however.

Connie on March 12, 2007 at 10:47 PM

AP – Thanks for the link.

On a side note, the Kyoto rally I went to on Sunday was populated largely by teenagers, and those not much older. It seemed to me that the ones I spoke with were parroting something that they heard at school, on the internet, or maybe in a first year university course. Some of them, I am convinced, did not have the critical thinking skills to think through an issue.

Others, though – well, they were hardcore. I saw one chick doing yoga/ninja exercises in the middle of it all. I didn’t take her picture, because I was afraid.

nailinmyeye on March 12, 2007 at 11:00 PM

I’ve been suspicious of Shep since I saw him freaking out in a hotel room on Fox and Friends the day that Katrina hit. It seemed rather unprofessional, especially since there was another reporter that was standing in the streets wearing nothing more sturdy than a rain slicker, making his report as he dodged debris that was flying down the street.

I’m not saying I would have reacted differently to the situation, I’m just saying that if he couldn’t handle it, he probably should have figured it out before he went on television.

Wolfman on March 12, 2007 at 11:41 PM

AAARRRRRRGGGGG!!!!

This guy (not Shep, though he is to, but the guy he’s interviewing) is a freeking moron. These offsets are not offsets but polution credits. This whole thing was a loophole developed, in the 80s I think, to get around EPA regs. If I have a company and you have a company, both of us pollute, the one that doesn’t hit their limit gets to sell the remainder of what they can polute to the other so they can go over their limit; it offsets NOTHING.

Just like fishing where limits are set because of over-fishing. Two guys go fishing and there is a limit on 6 fish each. One guy gets 6 in the first hour but the other only has 3.

“Hey Jim.”
“Yeah Bob?”
“If you let me catch some of your fish and takem home, I’ll pay ya a quarter a piece.”
“It’s a deal.”

At the end of the day, 12 were still taken from the lake.

P.S. This system actually takes away the need to companies to curb their emissions, just like this will cause people to not conserve energy.

“Paw, don’t stand there with the refrigerator open, you’re wasting energy.”

“Don’t worry Maw, I’ll just buy some Al Gore stamps.”

“Penguns” reminded me of Austrian protesters (against a Csech nuclear power plant), when asked why they were against the new plant, said “we’re happy with the electricity coming out of our sockets now”.

It’s like children running out of money saying “let’s go to the bank”, or running out of milk “there’s more in the grocery store”.

…and their rich mommy/daddy pays so they can protest, and study…and be anti-capitalistic.

Entelechy on March 13, 2007 at 1:14 AM

“Those who would doubt global warming need to read up.”

The media spoon feeds us global warming propaganda every time we turn on the TV or open a paper.

Those of us who doubt it, are the ones who have read up.

uptight on March 13, 2007 at 3:12 AM

I’m sure that nobody will ever read these words, as I’m so late to the party, but…

In the introduction, Chip states that global warming is a fact. (I know that’s not his name, but that’s how I have always referred to him.)

So much for saying that Fox is biased. Brit Hume (another sh*tty name) is good. But, this guy is a good looking doofus. I can’t believe that he knows his ass from a hole in the wall. Before I heard this report, when he was on I would change the channel unless the topic was very interesting to me. IMO he’s an idiot.

He’s a silly face that spews news. (The lights are on, but nobody’s home.)

RedCrow on March 13, 2007 at 3:57 AM

I’ll never respect Shepard Smith’s reporting again — not that I necessarily did to begin with.

Tom Shakely on March 13, 2007 at 5:58 AM

Ole Miss Shep has been seduced by the bright lights of Manhattan…one of their ‘Most Eligible Bachelors” in New York Magazine, and then two DUI arrests…The bright media spotlight will cause your brain to fry.

DoctorDentons on March 13, 2007 at 6:06 AM

Shep’s OK. He’s honest and fair. I am not some robot that consumes everything my favorite media source tells me. I educate myself on the issues. I think most Fox viewers are the same way.

The libs are entirely different. They are idiotic scum that swallow anything that bolsters their desired agenda regardless of it’s basis in fact.

csdeven on March 13, 2007 at 6:51 AM

It’s time for Shepard to move on to another network. I could have tuned into ABC, NBC, CBS or CNN if I want this type of preachy, biased reporting. There is no science on man-made global warming, only consensus. Consensus has no place in science.

seejanemom on March 13, 2007 at 8:59 AM

I have doubt that Shep was subscribing to global warming.

He uses the first-person plural word “we” (as in “we know the cause”) but I think he was speaking in the third person. As if to say “we” meaning the scientists, know the cause. He seems to qualify it when he says “The scientists are just as sure as they can be”.

Then he says, “Meantime rising tempatures are melting the icecaps”. As if to say “never the less the icecaps are melting”.

“Those who would doubt global (sic?)warning, need to read up” If you throw out the first quote, then this third quote is just a statement of fact that tempatures are increasing. Which they are. The only thing in doubt is the reason why and it’s context in the long term global temps.

Speaking in the third person is something he does a lot and I’d like to hear his explanation before I start slamming him. I’m not a democrate, so it’s incumbant on me to be rational and not emotional.

csdeven on March 13, 2007 at 12:08 PM

Shep is an empty headed fool.
