Hot Air programming change

I just wanted to write a quick post to alert everyone to a couple of programming changes coming to Hot Air next week. We now have three hosts and will soon have three shows airing here on Hot Air, so it’s time to get a schedule ironed out. And here it is.

Mondays, we’ll kick off the week with Erick Stakelbeck. Erick looks at counterterrorism and foreign policy issues, and we’re happy to have him bring his Stak Attack to the top of our weekly lineup.

Robert Spencer’s Jihad Watch moves from Thursdays to Tuesdays.

Vent with Michelle Malkin, Hot Air Films, mashups and your contributions will finish out each week.

This new schedule begins next week.

We’re always looking for videos produced outside Hot Air that we can feature in our Hot Air TV slot. Videos like this. And this. (Frank J., I’m lookin’ at you.) So if you have produced a video that you would like us to consider airing, shoot me an email at bryan-at-hotair-dot-com and we’ll take a look. We’re always looking for guest hosts too. If you think that you have what it takes to entertain and/or inform the Hot Air TV audience, shoot me an email at the same address or send me a link to any video of yourself that you already have online. No promises that you’ll get on the air here, but I do promise to take a look.

More: Here’s some good content from the field. Mild language alert.

Nice new lineup. Look forward to next week!

amerpundit on March 12, 2007 at 1:27 PM

Great changes, I love the variety that HA provides (though not to denigrate the great job Michelle does).

Uh, I can juggle? (at least a little bit). I’m also pretty good at karaoke of Paradise by the Dashboard Lights (at least in the shower). All I need is someone to sing w/me… I’ll send you the video Bryan. (just the singing, not the shower part). What was that email again?

dalewalt on March 12, 2007 at 1:37 PM

Thanks for the info, Bryan. Any chance Bethany will be back for press play? I haven’t seen anything new frome realverse in months… Did they close up?

rightside on March 12, 2007 at 1:37 PM

Great. Eric needs to be prepared or face a flawless debunking of all his presentations.

Ouabam on March 12, 2007 at 1:38 PM

I anticipated that Bethany would come up in any discussion of Hot Air programming. I’m sorry to inform everyone that she’s not coming back. Here’s realVerse’s email to me on their status and plans:

The producers of realVerse made the decision to take the vlog on hiatus with the intention of relaunching in 2007 with a completely new format. Bethany remains a friend of the vlog but the producers are unsure if the new concept will require a show host. A new date has not been announced for the 2007 relaunch.

So there you have it.

Bryan on March 12, 2007 at 1:43 PM

Cool, thanks for the heads up..

Viper1 on March 12, 2007 at 1:46 PM

Shoot. Bethany and realVerse were a plesant change of pace.

Theworldisnotenough on March 12, 2007 at 1:48 PM

When are we going to be treated to additional installments of the “Vent’s View?”

Pitty about RealVerse….

georgej on March 12, 2007 at 1:52 PM

Thanks Bryan, she will be surely and sorely missed…

rightside on March 12, 2007 at 1:55 PM

I have a great video clip I did myself entitled “Great Democrat Speeches of the Past Half-Century,” but it only lasts three seconds, so I doubt you’d want it.

JammieWearingFool on March 12, 2007 at 1:56 PM

It weakens the HotAir brand to commingle this lineup into the top-line offering.

I don’t mind having co-equal billing. But there should be a separate video blog (or whatever you want to call it) for each of the three, with the most recent for each noted and separately available at the top-line of the website.

The idea of a “rotating schedule” is so old-media.

Anil Petra on March 12, 2007 at 1:59 PM

No disrespect to Robert Spencer or Erick Stakelbeck, but my time is exceedingly valuable to me. I’ll make a special point to watch Michelle. But the blogosphere is already jam packed with so many middle-aged male conservative pundits that I can’t see how watering down your line up with two more is going to be a good thing. And two full days on terrorism – every single week – is going to get real old real fast. Mary Katherine Ham, Bethany from Real Verse or even La Shawn Barber would all be excellent on Hot Air. Did you even give them a call or did you just decide to relegate two full days of Hot Air TV to old men in suits lecturing us on Islam?

John on March 12, 2007 at 2:01 PM

I have a great video clip I did myself entitled “Great Democrat Speeches of the Past Half-Century,” but it only lasts three seconds, so I doubt you’d want it.

JammieWearingFool

There is ONE great Democrat speech…Zell Miller’s at the Republican Convention!

JetBoy on March 12, 2007 at 2:02 PM

Uh, John, sounds kinda reverse-sexist to me. Both Eric and Robert are excellent sources of information (although everybody you mentioned is equally informational).

I’m looking for insight, info, and analysis; I don’t care who it comes from.

But, uh,

even La Shawn Barber

????

dalewalt on March 12, 2007 at 2:05 PM

Kudos to Bryan and Michelle for encouraging more HotAir fan-generated content to post here!

ScottMcC on March 12, 2007 at 2:10 PM

Jammie… we could set it up like Bambi Meets Godzilla

Mazztek on March 12, 2007 at 2:13 PM

Instead of Bethany, can we get more nude photographs of Helen Thomas?

PinkyBigglesworth on March 12, 2007 at 2:25 PM

The idea of a “rotating schedule” is so old-media.

There are only so many hours in the day, dude. How many other blogs offer a fresh professionally produced video show five days a week, while the lead host also does Fox, a weekly column and her own blog? And while the other hosts also have major efforts going on off Hot Air? If you want a fresh show from each one each day, I’m afraid that you just don’t have a realistic understanding of what it takes to produce these shows. We don’t have Soros money to throw around and hire a crew of editors here. There’s just little ol’ me.

A schedule lets you know what new show to expect on what day. Why is that a bad thing? There’s always The Vault to catch up on the shows you might miss, or skip shows that you don’t want to watch. But griping at us and lecturing us isn’t a particularly friendly way to accept the free ice cream that we’re giving away here every day.

Bryan on March 12, 2007 at 2:26 PM

Did you even give them a call or did you just decide to relegate two full days of Hot Air TV to old men in suits lecturing us on Islam?

John on March 12, 2007 at 2:01 PM

I think Brian and the other technical wizards at HotAir can use the magic of computer graphics to satisfy John’s complaint. There is no reason they couldn’t insert a virtual host in post-production, so that Hot Air is not sullied by old men in suits.

Perhaps computer-animated hostess “Annanova” performing Robert and Erik’s videos in g-string and pasties?

(Pause to let the sarcasem seep in).

I think the signature HotAir v-log combines humor with ideas, so I would encourage Bryan to retain that aspect of HotAir when looking for guest hosts.

Anton on March 12, 2007 at 2:29 PM

Good to see John worries about messages, not messengers… Seriously, why don’t you just go buy a Stuff magazine and leave the critical thinking, learning and substantive news to the rest of us.

major john on March 12, 2007 at 2:29 PM

Actual honest-to-goodness question for the producers:

Is there such a thing as a “Hot Air exclusive,” and if so, are those perferable to a link to something on YouTube?

saint kansas on March 12, 2007 at 2:29 PM

JetBoy,

I forgot about Zell. But he’s a DINO, and considering that was at the GOP convention, I’m not sure it counts.

Even being a Yankee, I could still do a much better southern accent than The Pantsuit.

JammieWearingFool on March 12, 2007 at 2:31 PM

Here’s my 2 cents, FWIW. The more jihad and Islamization info the better. This is a war of information and ideas, and most Americans don’t have a clue. The MSM are not going to address the issue out of fear of vindicating the Bush Administration, so it’s up to responsible media like HA to carry the ball.

RedWinged Blackbird on March 12, 2007 at 2:32 PM

I’m afraid that you just don’t have a realistic understanding of what it takes to produce these shows.

Everyone thinks the other guy’s job is easy!

Hey Bryan, you have inadvertently illustrated the dangers of socialism. By giving away high-quality free video content on a daily basis, you have created a culture of dependency and aggrieved entitlement among your local cyber-proles. That’s a pretty neat trick for a conservative blog!

Anton on March 12, 2007 at 2:37 PM

I say “even” La Shawn Barber because I like her alot as a voice in the conservative movement and she always brings poignant insight to whatever topic she covers. At the same time she hasn’t had alot of video experience, so I don’t know if her presentation would be as polished as Bethany’s or MKH. Although I’m sure it would come with time.

As for informational content, my accounting text book is full of informational content. But I wouldn’t want to watch a TV show about it either. Robert Spencer in particular is a very knowledgeable on the subject of terrorism, but he’s not very dynamic as a speaker. I’m sorry, but he’s just not.

As for reverse sexism thing, that’s just ridiculous. I have been a Rush 24/7 subscriber for several years now, and my favorite thing about it is the Ditto Cam. But Rush is always fun to watch. He’s humorous and engaging. If HA could talk Newt into doing a weekly video, I’d never miss a single one.

John on March 12, 2007 at 2:38 PM

We do exclusives. If you have something, email me.

Well stated Bryan. As the producer of a small-time vlog that has worked directly with Hotair, I can tell you that Bryan literally works 18 hr. days to bring Hotair viewers FIVE episodes per week. I don’t blame the Hotair team for supplementing with guest hosts and topics. If you don’t like it why not produce a quality video yourself and submit it to Hotair –that’s how new media works. The “old media” slur works both ways — in “old media” the mindless viewers just watch, but in “new media” the audience gets involved and uploads video reports from the field.

Keep up the good work Bryan.

What happened to “Taboo Tuesdays”?

See if you can program the gals for the View Vent every few weeks.

No, you misunderstood.

I’d like to be able to click on a link unambiguously the latest posting by Michelle. If she posts one day a week, whatever, no problem.

I would suggest she not stick to a fixed schedule, but rather post as opportunities arise, in keeping with the immediacy of new media and the uncertain timetable of political news. Text and video bloggers can distinguish their content from old media style product by striking when the iron is hot, and I see HotAir moving away from that toward older models.

Anil Petra on March 12, 2007 at 6:56 PM

Bryan says:

But griping at us and lecturing us isn’t a particularly friendly way to accept the free ice cream that we’re giving away here every day.

That was a great line.

Ian on March 12, 2007 at 7:06 PM

Free ice cream?

While we appreciate your efforts, it takes time for us to consume content online, and we value our time as much as you yours. There is a wide variety of “free” content out there. I presume you’re doing everything you can to monetize traffic, and that you value your readership.

A diluted brand will aggregate less viewers. I find I’m coming to Michelle’s video content more often when she breaks into the league tables of Memeorandum, rather than navigating HotAir. Remarkable, but that’s Web 2.0. I just have to work to find it more here than elsewhere. That’s not sustainable in new media.

michellemalkin.com is another topic, for another time.

Anil Petra on March 12, 2007 at 7:48 PM

realVerse on March 12, 2007 at 5:44 PM

100% correct! I hope more people get the message.

Michelle Malkin is one woman. She can only do so much in a day. Each Vent is scripted, shot, cropped, and posted with professionalism unseen anywhere else on the Web. Cogdon’s online video only became popular because she was an East Coast liberal white girl that other East Coast liberal whites in the Old Media want to promote… there is NO comparison between the production values of her amateurish show(s) versus anything produced by HotAir Network, LLC.

I’m shocked more people aren’t impressed that Michelle Malkin maintains a daily blog, writes syndicated newspaper columns, attends speaking engagements, appears on multiple TV/radio shows, researches and writes weighty non-fiction tomes, produces at least three online video segments per week, and still has a family life for her two very young children.

Apparently if Michelle was a skinny white East Coast liberal grrrl, she’d be lauded daily in every media outlet in the western world rather than derided for having her videos delivered on a so-called “old media” schedule.

Oh, the nerve!

Pablo on March 12, 2007 at 8:44 PM

The truth is that funny blog posts don’t always translate to good video content. Good videos require snappy writing, compelling characters, sensible editing and producers/actors that push for the best performance in every frame of the video.

That’s why HotAir’s past few Vent videos are so good.

ScottMcC on March 12, 2007 at 10:49 PM

If I only have time to get on the net and go to one site that day, this is the one I go to. I personally don’t know of another blog (left, right, or otherwise) that has this much content, this well done, and as consistently as HotAir.

As for the schedule being “old media” there is nothing wrong with regularity.

As for “post as opportunities arise,” that’s what Allah does on this site and Michelle does on her personal blog. You just won’t get a well crafted video on every single thing; which of course you wouldn’t get if she did it whenever.

In closing, HotAir rocks.

P.S. If you see a problem and solve it in a way that’s new and different, that’s innovation. If you do something different just to be different, it sucks. (I.E. Tears for Fears ‘Shout’ Vs (when they tried to be “Artsy”) Seeds of Love.
