Montel Williams ambushes military families Update: Spousebuzz writes in
posted at 9:47 pm on March 11, 2007 by Bryan
I haven’t watched an episode of Montel Williams’ talk show in at least a decade. But I’ve heard from people who have caught his show that he’s gone moonbat on the war. One can be against the war and treat military families with respect. Or not. According to spousebuzz, Montel baited military families onto his show with the promise of discussing the effect of deployments on military members and their families. But once they were actually in his studio, the show switched to an entirely different, and very controversial, topic, and presented it in a very uneven way.
Finally, we all got up and left during a break before the taping was over. And I should probably add that there was a quite acrimonious exchange with Montel that resulted in one person being escorted out by the show security (who were very polite and professional, for the record). I did say, “You told us this was going to be about deployment, Montel!” to which the reply was, “Please, just leave.” If there was any discussion of how deployment issues affect family members after we left, it happened without us. All I can say is that the direction and tone of the show definately made it look like the topic was not going to come up.
If shame still existed, Montel Williams out to be ashamed of baiting and switching, and then ambushing, military families to get emotional reactions out of them.

Update: Spousebuzz wrote to me this morning, addressing Williams’ treatment of military families and his feelings on the war.
We have been a military family since 1993, and I can tell you right now that I have had it up to here (hand over head) with people taking advantage of the fact that as military families we don’t have freedom of speech to put words in our mouths. I can also promise you that, if anything, I tremendously downplayed what happened. It was AWFUL.
About Montel’s feelings on the war… Prior to taping, there is a segment presented called “Ask Montel”. During this segment he did indeed expound on his anti-war feelings. He kept referring to how we have already lost (he did not say Afghanistan specifically, but intimated it) – and this with military families of deployed servicemembers in his audience. Way to make us proud of our lives!
Furthermore, Montel stated that we’ve only been able to win one war since Vietnam – Grenada. When I researched Montel further after the show, it turns out he was on a carrier involved in the Grenada invasion. Which leads me to suspect that any war Montel participates in we will win. So, if he doesn’t like it, by nature of reverse reasoning, we will lose.
If you were to see the actual footage and way the anthrax information was presented in Montel’s taping, there would be no question as to his feelings towards the government in general and his willingness to twist facts in order to bring others to his opinion. You do not support the military if you are only willing to show them as downtrodden victims who fulfill your
preconcieved political agenda. We are NOT victims, we are volunteers. We thought we could trust Montel because he is a veteran himself. I guess not. So much for our military family.
The notion that a military veteran can’t turn into be a moonbat is laughable. Ever heard of Kos? Or John Kerry, who by the way served in Vietnam?
Update: Confirmed, Montel is a moonbat.

I remember G Gordon Liddy having him on his show several times. Too bad.

I am sure “they”, the liberal left and MSM, along with Montel, sees no wrong in exploiting these families……. Anything for propaganda and money, right?
If I remember right, didn’t Montel just beat an illness……. Was he exploited
What a piece of crap…….

Bryan,
Shame on you. You completely mischaracterized what the controversy was about. I clicked on the link and read the woman’s blog fully expecting, as your intro suggested with the “moonbat on the war” comment, that Montel ambushed the families with some kind of anti-war stuff. But no, his show was on the Anthrax vaccine, which has nothing to do with the war. You don’t even mention Anthrax once in your post, reinforcing the perception that the “bait and switch” had to do with Montel’s supposed “moonbat” antiwar stance.
I don’t agree with what Montel did, but the way you’ve characterized it is, frankly, deceitful. I expect better from Hot Air.
I don’t know if Montel is a Moonbat or not – you don’t provide any evidence either way beyond an allegation. I do know he was once an intelligence officer in the Navy, so unlike many, he at least has practical military experience. If you’re going to accuse someone of being an anti-war moonbat you’d better provide some evidence. Criticism of the DoD’s Anthrax program is a legitimate concern and should not be characterized as moonbattery.

Did you read what she said about the ambush? He ought to be ashamed, not me.
Bryan on March 11, 2007 at 10:39 PM
That’s what happens when Montel doesn’t wrap up filming by 4:20.

Why are all these libs who have all the answers so depressed? Montel tried to kill himself a while back. He needs to get down off his high horse.

Bryan,
I read about the ambush. I said it was bad. I agree with her views.
But why is this on Hot Air? Why do you insinuate that the “ambush” had to do with the war when it was really about the Anthrax vaccine? My problem with your post is that it’s misleading and suggests that somehow these families were ambushed into some kind of anti-war show, which is not the case at all. Your post insinuates that Montel had some kind of anti-war agenda:
You’re essentially suggesting that Montel’s anti-war views(which you provide no evidence for and I honestly don’t know if he is nor not) are the reason he ambushed these families. The thing you never mention is that the show had nothing to do with the war, but was on the anthrax vaccine which is legitimately controversial.

Could it be that good ol’ Montel is suffering from marijuana paranoia?
Seen it a thousand times while every user denies it.
Okay, here come the moonbats for real…

Make that three.

I thought he had MS and was failing health-wise (like Richard Pryor)? I guess he had the “mild” form of the disease.
Maybe his fake psychic Cynthia Brown should warn Montel about this kind of thing in the future?

It can only mean one thing. Williams ratings are starting a downward slide.
He needs to inject more controversy like Springer or Morey.
The trailer-trash crowd loves it.
pocomoco on March 12, 2007 at 12:32 AM
That slipped by me for a bit. Nicely done….

I thought Montel was a marine. Well, no matter. A few months ago he did a couple of shows from a carrier in the gulf. I only saw a little bit of one show, but he didn’t seem anti-military.
I think Bryan laid it out accurately in the tease. He said he had heard Montel had gone moonbat crazy. I don’t see that as a mis-representation.

It wouldn’t be the first time somebody with a military background turned against his brothers … Benedict Arnold, Jon Carey, Jack Murtha, etc.

Did Hotair forget to “Spring forward”? Or are we now on Central Time?

Sounds like a “Montel Williams ambushes military families” to me.
This is what Bryan was getting at; the military families, while having loved ones deployed, become a tool to get ratings. Instead of a time when they may have a chance to share with us their pride, they end up fighting for their pride.
Anything…anything, for ratings. Disgusting.

Whatever the topic… it is still bullshit. The polio vaccine can cause problems in a small percentage of people… but it is still better than the disease. These people need to get over that we in the military are not working at wallmart. if 1 out of every 25000 gets sick in order to ensure than EVERYONE ELSE survives an Anthrax attack in battle, than I say it’s worth it (BTW I have gotten the vaccine 9 times).
BadBrad on March 12, 2007 at 7:56 AM
It figures…he has engrossed with Hollywood. He, also, must be between his self medication time. Toke up, Montel.
oldelpasoan on March 12, 2007 at 9:56 AM
Montel is totally moonbat left. He believes in the conspiracies, he believes GW hates black people, he believes in the trickery of Silvia Brown, and it’s all influenced by smoke’n weed. Bad combination. If he ever has a conservative on his show he ambushes them, sets them up and berates them. And they are almost always out numbered.

Another example of liberal media using their distribution to promote propaganda to benefit their own political bias.
Thank you Bryan for posting these type of examples. We need to be reminded how the MSM is attempting to manipulate public opinion to their political agenda.

Sounds like the chickenhawk card’s been thrown on the table – a corollary.
Chickenhawk – can’t support or argue credibly for the war effort if one hasn’t served
Chickenhawk/reverse – any moonbat who served once upon a time can’t be criticised for any subsequent, illogical, rude behavior.
Seems like more reason to preserve the all volunteer army -a certain number of drafted people hold the resentment of being drafted all their lives.

Bryan,
Thanks for the updates – the post is now much, much better.
NPP on March 12, 2007 at 1:47 PM
There was never anything wrong with this post. I set it up fine, and Spousebuzz described the ambush perfectly well. The updates just prove that my aside in the open is true–Montel’s a moonbat. The idea that he couldn’t be because of his prior military experience never made any sense. By that standard, even Jimmy Carter (Navy nuclear sub service) can’t be a moonbat.
