Video: “The Great Global Warming Swindle”; Update: Scientist says he was swindled — by film’s producers
posted at 1:14 pm on March 10, 2007 by Allahpundit
People have been e-mailing about this since it aired on British TV a few nights ago. Dan Riehl‘s seen it and found it revelatory, particularly in whom it fingers as the culprit behind the GW craze.
I haven’t read enough on the issue to form an informed opinion, but it’s a full blown blue state/red state phenomenon now and I’m sure our readers will be interested. So here it is; 76 minutes’ worth of debunkery. Enjoy.
Update: Fallout.
Professor Wunsch said: “I am angry because they completely misrepresented me. My views were distorted by the context in which they placed them. I was misled as to what it was going to be about. I was told about six months ago that this was to be a programme about how complicated it is to understand what is going on. If they had told me even the title of the programme, I would have absolutely refused to be on it. I am the one who has been swindled.”
When told what the commission had found, he said: “That is what happened to me.” He said he believes it is “an almost inescapable conclusion” that “if man adds excess CO2 to the atmosphere, the climate will warm”.
He went on: “The movie was terrible propaganda. It is characteristic of propaganda that you take an area where there is legitimate dispute and you claim straight out that people who disagree with you are swindlers. That is what the film does in any area where some things are subject to argument.”
The producers deny he was misled.

I have to set aside an hour and half to watch this tonight. I was hoping it’d come to the internet soon! I’m glad this site is making a point to (occassionaly) talk about global warming as the hooey it is.

I don’t have the time to watch the video, but is the Burlington Coat Factory behind the global warming craze? I bet they don’t want global warming because then they’ll sell less coats.

Now that is a well-spent 76 minutes. I hope they DVD it. It would be well worth sending to a few of one’s least insane global warming friends (those who might actually watch it as opposed to using it for a coaster).

I watched the video and it seems spot on in its description of the politics behind the GW hysteria as well as the scientific evidence indicating CO2 levels are not dictating the warming rather the warming is causing the rise in CO2 levels.
-My favorite part was towards the end when the co-founder of Greenpeace called the new breed of environmentalists, “anti-human”

Right around the time the U.S. liberated, um, I mean invaded Iraq and all Internet forums became about the war, I ran across one guy who, within three posts, admitted that “man never should have come down from the trees.”
And I remember that because I really think it’s typical among the younger set these days; you grow just old enough to realize that nothing’s perfect and you flat-out can’t handle that fact, so the best you can do is piss on everything and think you’re a hero for doing it. Human beings suck, so I’m just going to hate being one and hate you for not hating yourself.
And the global warming devotees eat that up. If only there were no humans…except me, of course.

Exactly. Market it the same way the Goracle’s film was. I’d love to see it show up on the shelves of Blockbuster.

I’ve posted this link from the Business & Media Institute before, but I think it bears repeating. The link details the media’s hype on climate change which actually started in 1895 – over a century ago. (NY Times, of course…) They just keep switching between warming and cooling – this is the fourth cycle.

That was very well done and the impact relating to the Third World being held back by the U.N. and its members to develop is the true tragedy.
Liberal abortion laws have left fifty million-plus dead in this country along with women damaged for life from the process all for the sake of “choice”. I have no doubt that Liberals would be willing to sacrifice millions of more lives in underdeveloped countries in order to keep from them the basic they enjoy such as electricity, industry and travel in order to support their flawed concept of global warming.
and Al Gore is their mouthpiece.
Hening on March 10, 2007 at 4:05 PM
Sucked up all 76 minutes of it like a starving third-world inhabitant. Best video since “Obsession.” Gotta’ get the word out on this one.
BTW, if the Church of the Global Warming wants to drag me back into the dark ages, they’re gonna’ have to do it with me kicking, screaming all the way. (I am not “above” making a public scene.) They MAY just hafta’ declare me a witch and burn me at the stake. Hmmmm. Come to think of it, I’d consider it an honor to die that way.
CyberCipher on March 10, 2007 at 4:07 PM
The highlight is how effectively the Goreacle is debunked in the opening minutes. The rise in C02 happens 800 years after the increase in temperature according to all the ice core samples, even the one Al used.
So, he’s pretty much shown to be a hack and dismissed in the snap of the fingers.
Spoiler:
It’s Maggie Thatcher behind it all, making the whole “fingered” thing quite a bit more disturbing.

John and Ken’s Carbon Offset Program – the latest in American creativity!!!
There’s nothing like the American citizenry in action. John and Ken of AM 640, in Burbank, have recalled two governors, so far, and have made the lives of many representatives, from both political sides, miserable. Their favorite mission – attack stupidity, unconditionally.
Now they have a spoofy contest going on, where you can atone for your ‘global warming’ sins. I heard them speak about it on the radio and their hearts are totally into finding the best winners. Help them out and make your name memorable on one of their personal trees.

No, what he was saying is that the report clearly misrepresented him, took him out of context. His notes (of a few days worth of lecture) denotes that. The climate report does not even reference these notes that you posted.

right2bright on March 10, 2007 at 10:20 PM
His remarks at the 25:30 (or so) mark can’t be taken out of context. He states clearly that the ocean releases CO2 as a result of warmer surface temps. which is a major contention of the doc. i.e. higher temps lead to higher CO2, not the other way around. His class notes reassert this point and the class notes also point out the mis-understood role of the ocean as a repository of the earth’s heat and the general hysteria of the media’s reporting on climate issues.
His disclaimer two days after the documentary airs raises a ffew questions as to the pressure he may be under to recant.
billy on March 10, 2007 at 10:40 PM
You’re living in a dream world. It was shown on British TV (not even American network TV, the Science Channel, or the Discovery Channel) as opposed to in theaters, etc. Not because it fails in any areas other than not being part of the congregation of the Church of Global Warming.
For those hoping to see this in schools to show balance, you’re also living in a dream world. This will only be shown by what would be considered the most “radical” (by the mainstream liberals on college campuses) college professors to intelligent classes. Even that might be wishful thinking
Now, Professor Wunsch has clearly had the thugs of the “Warming” community threatening his job and funding after catching him being involved in this documentary. For starters, his role is VERY LIMITED in this movie. I had a tough time skimming back through and figuring out who he was. He may have had other brief parts (though I don’t recall), but the one part I find is of him UNAMBIGUOUSLY BASHING THE MEDIA AND SCIENCE COMMUNITY FOR “BIAS” TOWARDS DRAMATIC NEWS BASED ON TWEAKING OF CLIMATE MODELS, REGARDLESS OF ACCURACY!
Sorry about the bold, but I feel the need to debunk his backtracking here. He’s clearly been spooked by the warming Nazis. As was noted in the video, if you’re a scientist and go against the dogma you stand to lose your job and funding (I hope folks that recognize this, but believe in evolution can recognize or at least consider the possibility that this sort of “science” isn’t limited to the global warming arena… what is called “science” is politics and worse)
Here’s Wunsch’s main line from the movie:
So Wunsch, quit your whining guy. Look, I understand that you’re scared after seeing what has happened to state climatologists who’ve gone against “consensus”, but don’t blame the messengers here when first of all you don’t dispute any of the science in the film, and secondly your role was very limited, wasn’t about the science… you simply unambiguously bashed the media and science community “bias” (your word) that craves the “sky is falling” scenarios.

Check out the intro to the pdf. I linked above. He clearly sees the terrible reporting and manipulation going on, he even makes it part of his MIT classes.
But now he’s on the run, backtreading as fast as he can. What does that tell you about the politics surounding Global Warmening?
And just who is “politicizing” science?

Preachin’ to the choir man… I just wish more people would see and understand what’s going on. What really annoys me is that when the “trend” goes back to cooling for a couple decades it will be a new generation and the “global coolists” will be out again in full force and have the next generation of douche bag college kids and “scientists” running around with anarchy tatoos, dreads, and Che t-shirts chanting slogans of how President Jeb Bush is causing the freezing of the Earth, and the idiot public will march along with the loudest (and most wrong) voices. And if anyone thinks “oh, the public won’t fall for it”, just look what’s going on today… these alarmists were freaking over global cooling in the 70s, and know that they’re working with a new generation here and that those who remember those days have short memories.

Just in time, there’s a new “report”
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070311/D8NPKSRG2.html
Note that this AP writer forgets a few times to note that some statements are the opinion of the “report”, and reports these opinions as facts. This goes on throughout the piece.
If you’ve never read an article on the bullsh** global warming alarmism, make sure you read this one. Billions will be without water, hundreds of millions will starve, polar bears gone… BE AFRAID!!!
After a lengthy article, reporting all kinds of total CRAP as gospel, the article tosses this in towards the end:
Read: This is alarmist lies!
*Bonus* The article tells us that if we only stop putting out those evil greenhouse gases we can stop most of the end of the world scenarios!!! Yay!

Truth prevails.
I still believe that.
billy on March 10, 2007 at 11:35 PM
I wish I could agree… But I think the evidence (i.e. the lying media) goes the other way, and it gets worse by the day.
RightWinged on March 10, 2007 at 11:44 PM
OK, here’s the facts so anyone can understand. CO2 has atmospheric global warming properties only at exceedingly high concentrations…water vapor, on the other hand, is nearly linear…small concentrations have small warming characteristics, moderate concentrations have moderate characteristics, high…you get the picture.
However, increases in water vapor would come from evaporations of the oceans, which would eventually release the trapped carbons and CO2′s from the oceans.
So, what does this mean? Historically high CO2s in the past are more likely the effects of global warmings which were caused by increases in water vapor that increased temperatures. Man-made pollutants don’t cause increases in atmospheric water vapor. So then, what did cause these increases in water vapor in the past?
Your answer: a combination of solar output changes and cosmic rays. And mankind causes neither. Sorry, environmentalists, but facts iz facts.

Very impressive, I watched it from beginning to end. There was far too much information to be gather in one sitting, so I’ll be watching it at least once more.
Segments providing the hard-science that soundly damns “man-made Global Warming” for the lunacy that it is was powerfully and clearly presented. But that information was not really new to me, so coming away from it, my biggest question was: why would the Leftist BBC allow this to be aired ? The BBC is easily as far left as either MSN or CNN, so how did this get through the political correctness filters?
Have the Global-Warmers decided that their “man-made Global Warming scare” isn’t going to succeed and are backing away from it, trying to lay the blame on Margaret Thatcher? By the way, in her book “Statecraft” (2002),Thatcher admits to getting the ball rolling on Global Warming and has since expressed her regret for ever supporting the idea of human-induced global warming in the first place. So before anyone tries to lay this behemothic fraud at the feet of Margaret Thatcher, one of my all-time political heroes, we need to remember she hasn’t been in power for more than sixteen years. (resigned in November of 1990)
I would agree she did a bad thing, but with good intentions, which of course is still bad. What she did was slide a lot of money across the table to some “scientist” with specific instructions to “prove” there was such a thing as “Global Warming” and that it was caused by CO2. And of course “proving” Global Warming is very easy after receiving so much “encouragement.” If you have enough money, “scientist” can prove an elephant is able to hang from a cliff by wrapping its tail around a daisy.
Her intention was to get a political edge to use against the environmentalist, to undermine them and drum up support for nuclear power plants, a noble cause. Doubtlessly, she never envisioned the enviros adopting the ruse she invented and turning it into the industrial, private property, economic and person freedom threat that is has become today.
Thatcher has also since stated that: “Whatever international action we agree upon to deal with environmental problems, we must enable our economies to grow and develop, because without growth you cannot generate the wealth required to pay for the protection of the environment.” While Thatcher was responsible for inventing “Global Warming” she is not the one that build it into the all consuming “Death Star” threat to freedom that it is today.
So lets not let people like Al Gore and the Democrats off the hook by trying to point to Margaret Thatcher. To my knowledge every single Democrat in the country is pushing the “man-made Global Warming scare” with all the zeal they can muster. Make no mistake, these people know human-induced global warming is pure fiction, they are willing to pick your pocket, destroy your property rights, destroy our economy, and hand our country over to the international elitist on a platter just to fill their pockets and gain power. They are the enemies of freedom, know them.
Now, where do the three RINOs, Giuliani, Romney and McCain stand on this issue. We know McCain is pushing hard for climate change legislation, so he’s out. Giuliani said the debate on the existence of global warming “is almost unnecessary … because we should be dealing with pollution anyway.” Great Rudy, you just said, lets spend billions and who cares if it’s really necessary or not…. your out. This leaves Romney who has flip-flopped on every issue conservatives hold dear at one time or another, he’s out.
The GOP doesn’t have a suitable presidential candidate at this point. Pray that we get one.

BBC Four is NOT Channel 4.
Channel 4 is an independent TV channel that was formed in the 1980′s.
When digital TV came along a couple of years ago, we got a few more channels from the BBC: CBBC & Ceebeebees for kids, BBC3 for comedy and BBC4 for documantaries.
The Great Global Warming Swindle was not on BBC4. It was on channel four.
This is strange, because channel four is normally so left wing, it makes the BBC look stodgy.

I don’t know about global warming, but I do know that security hawks should be for conserving oil anyway. Because when you buy gas you are putting money in the pockets of Ahmadinejad and Hugo Chavez. Even Charles Krauthammer says we need a gas tax. If we can reduce our consumption the price of oil will go down and enemies of the US will be poorer.
Gaijin51 on March 11, 2007 at 8:13 AM
Good point here, Gaijin, but that’s not the point of this thread.
Channel 4 put together an incredible rebuttal to the current GW hysteria/new religion and I believe that Prof. Wunsch said what he meant to say in the video.
The British seem to be in complete thrall to the GW craze so I wish that I could have been there when this was aired–I particularly liked the scientist who guiltily admitted that he had been a part of the BBC program in the ’70′s that warned of the “coming ice age” that never happened and who repents it all now.
I look forward to the continued debunking of this global scam that is aimed primarily at the U.S.A. and I pray for those poor folks in Africa that are being told they can never develop unless they use solar and wind power!
What a crock of lies the whole thing is–thanks a million for posting the link to this fine documentary, AP!

saint kansas on March 11, 2007 at 10:56 AM
Whether Krauthammer really says that or not I’m unsure because I didn’t click on the link, so I’ll take your word for it that he did… But he’s wrong. Well, not completely.. the price would go down a bit, but the REAL reason it’s up is speculation. They’ve been scaring people for the past couple centuries that the planet is running out of oil in “X years”… We’ve passed numerous set dates on when oil “should have” run out.
For starters, the thinking is wrong. They would have you believe that oil is a “fossil fuel”, meaning created by fossils buried and under pressure for millions of years. However this has been shown to not be the case in some tapped out areas refilling themselves after a handful of years of being ignored. They’ll still try to tell you that these examples of abiotic oil were exceptions rather than the rule, but how do we know? Look at the “science” community handles global warming… how are you to take these people at their word, ever?
In semi-related news the NY Times (oddly enough) just did a piece a few days ago on how new technology is allowing us to pull oil from previously abandoned spots. In fact it was never possible to extract the majority of the oil, so what we actually pulled out was not much at all compared to what is there.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/05/business/05oil1.html?_r=2&hp&oref=slogin&oref=slogin
How about all the drilling off the coast of the US or the vast oil shale resources here at home?
The market speculators are able to drive the price of oil up over concerns of oil shortages due to mid-east violence or increased driving season or winter heat usage or whatever they feel like on a given day… but the reality is that there is no real concern for oil shortages. You may at first want to say I’m putting on a tinfoil hat here, but I’d beg you to reconsider your opinion once you recognize how easily pulling the wool over the world’s eyes was done with “global warming”.
We could be energy independant if we could only drill and get our own friggin’ oil that is plentiful. From Alaska to the Florida coast. But wait, then we’d remain the one superpower! We wouldn’t be held hostage to OPEC or to the UN as is clearly the plan with all this energy and global warming crap. Does anyone really believe that Kyoto, etc. is about saving the planet? It is clearly one of the first big steps towards global law/global governing.

Every time I hear about Global Warming, I am reminded of all the “End of the World’ scenarios that I have heard in the last 46 years. Here’s just a few:
Fascist American Government: 1970′s (Nixon), 1980′s (Reagan/Bush Sr.), 1990′s (Bush Sr.), 2000′s (Bush Jr.)
Military-Industrial Complex: every decade since the 60′s
Corporate America: every decade since the 60′s
Buildup of American Military Forces: every decade since the 60′s (except for the 90′s during the Clinton Administration)
DDT and Environmental Poisons: every decade since the 60′s
Depletion of Global Plant and Animal Species: every decade since the 60′s
Nuclear Power Accidents: every decade since the 60′s
Depletion of Global Oil Reserves: 1970′s, 1980′s, 2000′s
Global Cooling: 1970′s
Plate Tectonics and Global Earthquakes: 1970′s (Note: that scenario didn’t have much of a following EXCEPT by the scientific community, and that was short lived)
Acid Rain: 1980′s
“Star Wars” Program: 1980′s
Smog from Auto Emissions: 1980′s
Depletion of the Rain Forests: 1990′s
Depletion of the Ozone Layer: 1990′s
Killer Asteroid: 2000′s
Global Warming: 2000′s
The scenarios go on and on, but there are far to many to list.
Whenever anyone tells me of another “End of the World” crisis that is about to befall mankind, I always respond with: Make sure you wake me up when the world ends as I wouldn’t want to miss it again.

We already have several gas taxes, federal, state, and, in some cases, local. How will increasing the gas tax reduce the consumption? It never has in the past.
RedinBlueCounty on March 11, 2007 at 12:08 PM
Here’s the money quote for old engineers like me (most engineers love analogies)
“The analogy I like to use is that my car isn’t running well. I’m going to ignore the engine, which is the Sun. I’m going to ignore the transmission, which is water vapor and I’m going to look at one nut on the right rear wheel, which is human C02.”
CO2 lags temperature. Lags! Lags! Lags! How the BLEEP did they get this far when the data doesn’t even come close to supporting their thesis?
I think all these Ecowackos need to live in Africa for 6 months with these poor villagers – that would solve global warming hysteria in short order.
TheBigOldDog on March 11, 2007 at 12:19 PM
Yeah, you’ll be singin’ a different tune when your family gets hit with SARS or Bird Flu! (j/k obviously… Excellent post, seriously)
Good point I meant to add RedinBlueCountry. I was more obsessed with pointing out that it is the “peak oil” speculation that really drives the price of oil… And again, I haven’t even read the Krauthammer piece, but for this I don’t need to either Gaijin51… About 50 cents out of every gallon of gas sold goes to taxes, while only 9 cents is profit for the oil companies. Taxes very a few cents up or down depending on the state, but this is the average.

I don’t know, but I’m considered a whacko by people here when I ask the same thing about evolutionists.

So, what he’s saying, is that there IS legitimate dispute and that the science is not settled.
He must repent.

The thing is, Western progress invented the automobile, yet third world oil runs it. By virtue of nothing more than the black sludge under their sand, we are held to ransom by thugs like Ahmadinejad, Chavez and “our friends” the Saudis.
These “leech cultures” benefit from our innovation and give us nothing but trouble in return.
Let’s take back the initiative. From now on, we should only build cars that run on a fuel that we can produce ourselves in the West. A temperate climate fuel like rape seed oil.
The effect will be fantastic. Renewable energy shuts up the tree huggers. Farmers have something to farm. The oil industry collapses, putting those rogue regimes reliant on favors from us, if they wish to get around.
uptight on March 11, 2007 at 2:29 PM
As explained at 12:03 PM, we CAN produce oil ourselves.

I guess that I am at least a semi-scientist. I have an MS in electrical engineering and spent a lot of my working years analyzing far out proposals and conclusions.
This documentary didn’t present anything I didn’t already know but at least it is out there for people to see.
They did “cherry pick” the data but not as badly as the nutcases on the other side. They also got it right that the sun is the main ingredient. As far as computer models are concerned, anybody who believes the outputs of something as complex as global weather is dreaming.
As far as “man made” global warming is concerned I know “junk science” when I see it.

I watched & copied that video (mp4) & am keeping it. Great documentary. I gotta show this to my lib sister.

Like this:
CO2 Graph:
====++++==—–==++=—–=+++++==
Temperature Graph:
====++++==—–==++=—–=+++++==
Note that the Goracle shows the two graphs over a very long time horizon that makes the 8-century lag minimal, then separates the two graphs vertically rather than superimposing them together, which would show the unmistakable pattern of the temperature peaks and valleys before the corresponding points on the CO2 graph.
CO2 causes global warming just like people having large muscles causes them to work out at the gym.
The Monster on March 11, 2007 at 6:45 PM

Once we irrefutably demonstrate how stoooopid the Church of Global Warming is, the libs will just shrug and move on to the next stupidity as if nothing happened. They never learn.
Mojave Mark on March 11, 2007 at 11:39 PM
I personally think it’s been irrefutably demostrated. But they’ll hold on for another decade probably… the next generation will endure “global cooling” again (as they did in the 70s)… Luckily for the “sky is falling” liberal crowd who wants us to be governed by the UN, everyone has short memories, and the media is full of liars.

And to think people were calling Channel 4 some.. ‘very bad names’ last year
And now we’ve had 2 ‘interesting’ programs from them..
Reaps on March 12, 2007 at 12:40 AM
Reaps, Indeed (are you referring to this one and the one on the exposé of what goes on in the mosques?).
Just today, Channel 4 is being slammed again for saying that Prince Charles is unfit to be King (which, speaking as a “former colonist,” I’d say that he is!).
Jen the Neocon on March 12, 2007 at 2:05 AM
A lot of people jumped on the GW bandwagon becasue it wasn’t “mainstream”. These people wanted to be on the edge and to fight the power. Now that the GW myth is mainstream shouldn’t these people be jumping off?
Wyrd on March 12, 2007 at 9:11 AM
They will as soon as they figure out which shiny new bandwagon the cool kids are jumping onto. In the meantime, they’re just going to stretch this one out a little while longer by changing the name from Global Warming to “Climate Change” and hoping that we won’t notice.
ReubenJCogburn on March 12, 2007 at 9:52 AM
Imagine if we stopped climate change! then we would be crying about stagnation. Just no pleasing some people :)
Wyrd on March 12, 2007 at 10:26 AM
Yep, we needs bigger gas taxes.
Right now, Europe’s gas tax reduces their consumption, artificaially lowering Global prices, basically subsidizing (in part) our gas prices.
If we raise our gas taxes too, then both U.S. and Europe can subsidize gas prices for China. Which is really what our goal ought to be.
Why? I have no idea.

No Grants For You!
LOL. Good one. That’s for sure.
WriterMom on March 12, 2007 at 11:00 AM
In due time. But right now that crowd is too busy jumping on the “I’m going to vote for a black guy!” bandwagon. DISCLAIMER: There’s nothing wrong with voting for a black guy. The problem is that those who are voting for Barry O are doing so ONLY because he’s black…. Oh, I forgot, because he brings “hope!” (How many times have I seen that on YouTube comments)… Hope for what? Because he’s a nobody if not for the fact that he’s black? He’d just be white Hawaiian Barry if not for the fact he’s black.
Sorry for the threadjack, but seriously, that’s the popular bandwagon that everyone is preoccupied with right now. They feel good about themselves by saying they’re going to vote for a black guy, when deep down his skin color is all they are really voting for (Similarly Hillary will get a lot of “I voted for a woman” votes, but on college campuses you’re really cool if you vote for a black guy… arguably cooler than if you vote for Nader)
RightWinged on March 12, 2007 at 1:29 PM
Hey, wait! I voted for Nader!
not really
