[...] If their economy is as bad as advertised and if it’s really true that Russia is going to starve their Bushehr reactor, maybe they’re at the point where they’ve got nothing to lose by being provocative. If they get hit in response, so much the better for them; the affront to national pride would boost their popularity. But if they don’t get hit and they keep on provoking, the better the chances will be of getting Russia and China to agree to really tough sanctions — not the wrist-slap they’re going to pass this afternoon — after the next deadline passes. Can their economy really be so badly off that even draconian measures would do no further damage? [...]

Iran had a really bad cold snap earlier this winter that resulted in Iran cutting off gas exports in order to supply domestic needs
crosspatch on March 11, 2007 at 12:28 AM

More of that damned Global Warming!

My daughter suggested that we air drop XBox and Wi all over the country. That’ll take care of the youth.
Limerick on March 10, 2007 at 11:25 PM

That sounds like a good idea, if we add DVD and MP3 players too. I'm sure that Gore would love to send copies of his duckumentary to Iran. (See above)

Also, just imagine the Iranian government's response if we blanket Iran with free copies of Stars and Strips! They would have a full-out melt down. That would be fun to watch.

Scatterfield should've shown him a photo of the Iranian I.E.D.s and said "Do you or do you not provide I.E.D.s to Iraqi militia? Don't wait for the translation."

V5, you're an evil genius! And so is Limerick's daughter!

Standing ovation for Limerick, for raising this kind of young woman, and also a son who is defending our right to post our comments on the Net and all the other freedoms we take for granted.

Exit question, no doubt, this guy would make Mr. Peanut's policies look sound!

V5 - I think our counterfeiting efforts over there are in full swing and are a major part of their inflation problem. And I believe that one of the reasons we have altered the look of our large bills was to counter North Korea and Iran's printing of funny money.

The official target for inflation is 9.9 per cent but the current rate is thought to be at least 20 per cent, and rising. In certain foods it is closer to 40 per cent and some fresh vegetables are disappearing in Tehran.

This seems like proof that sanctions don't hurt governments, they hurt people. An authoritarian government is not hurt by sanctions, since they don't care about the people, especially when they can use the controlled media to blame America, or the Jews.

Bombs, on the other hand, do hurt governments.

From the Independant:

Iran is the second largest producer of oil in the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries but it imports 40 per cent of its petrol - worth about $3 billion a year - after its refining capacity was wrecked in the war with Iraq.

That war ended 19 years ago, and instead of building the refinery capacity they need, they've been building a "peaceful nuclear energy" capacity they don't?

Highly hypothesized and...

From the 'Tehran Daily Idolater'

Despite a 20 per cent increase in the national budget last year, Mr Bush had to go back to America's Congress, the Flagulators, six? times to ask for more money. Government expenditure is extremely high and rising - a pledge to reduce budgetary dependence on Fed supplements by 10 per cent each year has been thrown aside as the government has resorted to using the Federal Reserve Fund as its piggy bank. Commentators speculate that America has inadequate foreign currency reserves to negotiate the demands of the coming year.

In fact, the extent of government borrowing from Federal and foreign banks is jeopardising the solidity of the US banking system.

Sorry, couldn't resist.
More fun than normal people should be allowed to have, but then who around here is normal?

Sounds like Cuba..... viva castro, viva hugo chaveZ!

Too bad a single carrier group exceeds you entire military....... "Oh, you forgot about that?"

You know, there could be another possibility........ the Western Press has built, yet another, "Straw Man", to be an antagonist against President Bush....... and just like Sadaam.... we will find him in a hole........ and again, President Bush will be blammed.

With all the bravado, the only one I really have my eye on is Putin.

Once KGB, always KGB.

Too bad the American Media isn't reporting on all of the deaths of reporters in Russia these days.... "Hate Bush!".

Anyone else seen the amount of arms being sold to Syria and Iran by Russia, the Republic of.....?

The U.S. and Coalition forces have found Russian ordinance, serial numbers, with asset tags from Iran, that have killed and wounded U.S. and Coalition forces, and our media....... keeps this from common knowledge.

This is just not "bias", this is "Treason".........

as the government has resorted to using the Oil Reserve Fund as its piggy bank

This phrase in a Western publication alone could ignite the war.

"Mr Ahmadinejad had publicly argued against the abolition of subsidies and advocated persuading consumers to switch to other fuel sources such as natural gas, which do not rely on foreign imports."

Iran had a really bad cold snap earlier this winter that resulted in Iran cutting off gas exports in order to supply domestic needs. Encouraging more domestic natural gas consumption will come at the cost of reduced exports further impacting revenues.

Also, a major deal to supply India with gas via a pipeline across Pakistan may now be a moot issue because India has apparently discovered a major domestic gas field.

The current economic prospects for Iran are bleak. It's like the old expression ... "It's always darkest just before it goes completely black". Iran's economy has only a year or two left, in my opinion. Capital is fleeing, the smart people are fleeing, and most interestingly, the women are fleeing or turning to prostitution in order to make ends meet.

Maybe it has to do with a cultural thing but I believe Iran is purposely attempting to destabilize the region simply to jack up the price of oil. It is designed to push the emotional buttons of oil speculators, though Saudi Arabia has said they have enough excess oil production capacity to replace Iran's oil exports on world markets if need be.

Take the U.S and Britain out of this quote.... seems to me like the "trouble makers" of todays world...... so I can get a job in intelligence?

The participants at the talks included all of Iraq's neighbors Iran, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Kuwait as well as Russia, France, China, Bahrain, Egypt, the U.N., the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Arab League.
"U.S. and Britain taken out for effect."

We all know that Allah says it is OK to lie to an unbeliever, so if they say you are lying, are you lie, aren't you telling the truth... (yes, Norman... Compute!)

But what about this.........

"They're lying because it is just not true," <strike>Amiri</strike> Felipe Calderón told the AP. "<strike>Iraq's </strike> the United States borders with <strike>Iran</strike> Mexico are the most secure of <strike>Iraqi</strike> the United States borders. The <strike>Iraqi</strike> United States government has not even once said <strike>Iran</strike> Mexico, the Republic of, is interfering in its affairs."

Better?

Mr Ahmadinejad

I love it, no longer "President Mymood Iminajihad!", just like our press with President George W. Bush.........

Limerick,

You have a very smart daughter. Maybe you should make sure she enrolls in Poli-Science in college. We could use more critical thinkers.

I was expecting a confontation when I heard there were going to be talks.

The Iranians MUST be confronted at every opportunity, until they stop giving weapons to the terrorists, or until we bomb th cr*p out of them.
