Newt: I diddled while Clinton burned; Update: Is Fred Thompson in? Update: Hillary 46, Brownback 41

It’s the same strategy lawyers use in having their own witnesses confess to bad deeds on direct examination instead of waiting for it to come out in cross. Makes it look like contrition, even though it isn’t. But at least we know now he’s thinking seriously of running. Otherwise, why admit it in the first place?
I don’t think he stands a chance. The media hates him and the public is weary of polarizing figures, which explains 90% of Obama’s appeal vis-a-vis Hillary. Plus, as the face of the 1994 GOP takeover, Newt is a symbol of Republican hegemony. That’s why we love him, and that’s also why the public at this particular point in history is going to be skittish.
If anyone benefits from this announcement, I’d say it’s Romney. The more the public finds out about Giuliani’s and Gingrich’s peccadilloes, the more comparatively attractive Mitt becomes. If his camp’s willing to play dirty, I’d expect them to go after McCain’s indiscretions and make the case even clearer to morals voters that there’s only one choice for them among the major candidates.
Then again, Mitt’s got bigger things to worry about.
Moran’s got a solid rundown of Newt’s problems including the notorious fact about him filing for divorce while his wife was hospitalized with cancer, which, incredibly, makes Rudy’s breakup with Donna Hanover at a press conference only the second-tackiest marital crackup on the GOP side. And speaking of Rudy, Reuters has a stupid hit piece on him out today quoting New York leftists still traumatized by their time in the Giuliani gulag. They’d better sob louder if they want to drown out the boost this will give him.
Update: A white knight emerges! I’m receptive, seriously.
Former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker (R-Tenn.) is contacting powerbrokers in the Republican Party to build support for a 2008 presidential campaign by his one-time protégé, former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.)…
Thompson has told allies in recent days that he is exploring seriously a bid for president in 2008 in response to what he has described as strong encouragement from Republicans dissatisfied with the current slate of candidates.
Update: Man, conservatives hate Hillary. I know we all know that, but damn.

I think it all boils down to the American public not willing to put a man in the Oval Office named “Newt.”

I’m getting the impressing that that’s especially true where MM’s concerned.
Dread Pirate Roberts VI on March 9, 2007 at 11:01 AM
Gosh! Let’s start a wave of candidate confessions. It’d make a great prime time show. Each episode a different candidate would confess to any and all transgressions in their entire life. Picture much wailing and sobbing ala Jim and Tammy Faye. Tear and mascara streaked faces looking pensively into the camera – begging for our forgiveness.
Afterwards, all is ok as it is now “old news”.
Let me know when it’s Hillary’s turn. She’ll require a 2 hour special.
BacaDog on March 9, 2007 at 11:05 AM
Didn’t we already know this?
I rather like Newt. The name is unfortunate though.
honora on March 9, 2007 at 11:05 AM
It’s weird how some things stick to politicians and some things don’t. Rudy had an extra-marital affair in broad daylight, but his positives are through the roof. Newt has an affair, and he is sunk. I’m not passing judgment on either, it’s just strange that some politicians are just unaffected by bad pub.
Matticus Finch on March 9, 2007 at 11:06 AM
I think it’s too early to cast unfamiliararity as an obstacle. Clinton was virtually unknown at this point on his way to winning his first term, and so was John Kerry when he won the Democratic nomination. I don’t think the general population even knew who John Kerry was until Howard Dean gave us his famous pig squeal..
Gregor on March 9, 2007 at 11:08 AM
How long til the libs say that Clinton really didn’t do anything that bad?
btw Newt makes Rudy look as pure as the wind driven snow, he could be in the cabinet but no way on hte ticket
Defector01 on March 9, 2007 at 11:09 AM
the other thing that lets you know he’s atleast wanting to run, is the book he just published. He’s clearly courting the religious right and hoping they will forgive him.

they are scared to death of Rudy, I’ve read libs saying that Rudy is “way worse than Clinton” and a “complete scumbag”…

I wonder of Newt sits around kicking himself in the rear thinking, “if only I had kept it in my pants I could be President”
jp on March 9, 2007 at 11:14 AM
Saw an article on that a couple of days ago. Kind of surprised it hasn’t received more attention.
I hope Fred does run. At least there’d be one real conservative in the field.
BacaDog on March 9, 2007 at 11:16 AM
What’s weird to me is how the big no-no is sex: I am more disturbed by the fact that Newt left his first wife while she was in the midst of battling cancer than the fact he was committing adultery. Potato, potahto.
Re the difference between the way the public looks at Rudy vs Newt–well I guess it’s the delta between the public persona and the personal peccadillos?
honora on March 9, 2007 at 11:16 AM
That sounds like a similar saying we have in West Virginia, “If you can’t keep it in your pants, keep it in the family.”

If Giuliani wins the election then we’ll just go from Bush Derangement Syndorme to Giuliani Derangement Syndrome.
Btw I wanna see Fred Dalton Thompson as Pres and Sam Waterson as VP; DA and Mccoy in 08! lol
Defector01 on March 9, 2007 at 11:22 AM
We need a show called “American President” using the American Idol format.
Thousands of people all over America line up for auditions.
Each week, America votes off a few of them.
The winner would put his/her hat in the ring against Hillary/Obama and Rudy/McCain. The winner would have great name recognition and millions of potential voters lined up.
Come on Fox. It’s a winner.
faraway on March 9, 2007 at 11:22 AM
I’m right there with you BacaDog. Mitt has a conservative question mark over his head. Rudy is a RINO. McCain is a sellout. Tanc is dry white toast.
Thompson has history, intellegence, experience, name recognition, and media savy. If he throws his hat in the ring, he’ll be my #1 choice.
natesnake on March 9, 2007 at 11:22 AM
You say in jest, but it would probably be a huge success.
I think it may violate some campaign laws? But, so long as they don’t legally enter the race before the conclusion of the show, they may be safe? Who knows.
natesnake on March 9, 2007 at 11:28 AM
Were I to be intellectually honest and consistent with myself, I should vow not to vote for Newt if he runs. Clinton’s infidelity was/is a big problem for me, and in truth this is nothing different. Top that off with Newt’s less-than-courteous abandonment of his first wife and he can be as conservative as can be and it’s not good enough.
Besides, there’s so little chance he’d win the general election.
I like Rudy, because he’s tough where it matters and he’s formidable against the Dems. I AM intrigued about Thompson though. Very charismatic and a good conservative (so far as I know).
Darksean on March 9, 2007 at 11:29 AM

All the yahoos must realize that the next President is going to be either Rudy or Hillary. Any other candidate will guarantee the Clinton/Obama victory in Nov. 2008. Talk about Newt Gingrich, Duncan Hunter, Sam Brownback – is laughable.
By the way Donna Hannover was a quivering witch who did not even vote for him for mayor. He did right by dumping “Miss the Vagina Diaries” Hannover.

Benaiah on March 9, 2007 at 11:56 AM
I pretty much feel the same way that Darksean does, and to address Matticus Finch, the difference is that Guliani has never presented himself as a holier than thou, family values type of guy. Gingrich has. And that makes him a hypocrite to many.
For example, if we find out that Guliani was on the Mafia’s payroll during his tenure as NYC Mayor, well that would be a bit of a problem, being that he has positioned himself as Mr. Anti-Crime.

The left would have a hard time spinning Thompson as a party toe-liner. He was one of the lead investigators in the Watergate scandal. Even though he lead the charge to support Libby (financially speaking), you can’t equate that with prosecuting Richard Nixon.
He’s not an idiot either. His law degree is from Vanderbilt.
natesnake on March 9, 2007 at 12:43 PM
By the way AP, where’s the tip-love?
natesnake on March 9, 2007 at 12:44 PM
It’s sounds snarky, but it is a serious question, because I really like what I hear from Thompson. America is now so focused on being TV-attractive, will it elect a president who has a passing resemblence to the hood ornament of a Mack truck?
Now, not serious:
I thought Hunter Thompson died.
eeyore on March 9, 2007 at 12:52 PM
Duncan Hunter, man :P He’s not dead too is he? :P
lorien1973 on March 9, 2007 at 12:54 PM
Probably right, but I still would like to see him run anyway. He would instantly raise the level of the debate in the Republican primary, and would push conservative ideas to the forefront.
I’d like to know more about Fred Thompson, but from what I do know, I could definitely get excited about this one. If Thompson and Newt both enter, Rudy, McPain, and Romney are going to be hurting.
thirteen28 on March 9, 2007 at 12:58 PM
Yep, old news made new news…only in our superb media.
During the winter recess, while the Clinton fiasco was going on, I shook Fred Thompson’s hand at the Santa Clara airport. I was on a business trip. He walked toward me alone. I said “Senator Thompson?” He said “Yes maaaaam”, in a deep voice. He is so incredibly tall, and I’m 5′6″. We exchanged a few niceties and departed. One of my colleagues, when I asked him who he thought that is, said “some actor” :) I like the guy a lot!!!
Bad news for McCain all around.

This poll is completely irrelevant. The general public has absolutely no idea who Brownback is at this point. Not to say their opinion would change after getting to know him, but a man won’t get votes from people who have no idea who he is.
But really, what does it matter anyway? As if Brownback actually has a shot of winning the nomination and going up against Hillary?
Geez!
Gregor on March 9, 2007 at 1:37 PM
Newt’s got some of the best “grey matter” on the scene, but I think the opposition so well described above would, although with difficulty, ultimately sink him.
Where he could shine (among many places) is Secretary of Energy. He has a deep and abiding committment to the development of alternative sources for American energy independence, and that would be a heck of a bully pulpit. And with the headlines today combining phrases like “Iran” “close the Straits of Hormuz” and “$400 a barrel”, that doesn’t seem like a bad goal. But Newt would never steer that energy ship into 1932 economic waters, as would be the wont of every Dem, some of them even deliberately to make America less “arrogant”.
Just a thought.
eeyore on March 9, 2007 at 1:43 PM
C’mon … cheating on your wife, or acting in a 2nd sequel of a movie whose original was hopelessly cheesy to begin with? Tough call, but I’d say the marital infidelity is a little bit worse … just a little though.
thirteen28 on March 9, 2007 at 1:48 PM
Brownback is wrong on immigration .
Newt was married to his first wife 18 years prior to his infidelity. They were married after their freshman year of college. Not to make excuses, but the dischord was probably brewing for quite a while, and was not due to her illness. So he’s an untouchable because of THAT? When Hillary and Rudy and Newsome and countless other politicians who have nefarious past personal issues are fine? More substance please. That’s not a good enough reason to write him off.
Plus the democrats went after Newt 83 times and he resigned over 1 factually innaccurate letter he signed off on without having read fully. He even paid for the investigation into that letter with his own money, prior to taxes. $300,000 out of his pocket. He was witch-hunted out of power and really scares the leftists in this country. He’s exactly what we need.

Slublog on March 9, 2007 at 2:02 PM
I love that the poll appears surprised by the 20+ point increase in Obama’s name recognition.
Plaster his face everywhere, constantly dedicate news stories to him, mention him at least once in every story that is about another Democratic candidate and write fawning articles about his college note-taking skills – - –
THEN, act surprised that his name recognition has shot up 20%.
I don’t care that the MSM does it. If I had a forum to push my candidate, I sure as heck would.
I’m just flat out jealous that we haven’t yet managed to break into their market share yet. I know there’s Fox News, but Fox is busy trying to be fair and balanced. I’m talking about a news channel (with good market share) that would be as unabashedly right leaning as the MSM is left-leaning.
That would be sweet.

Newt doesn’t have a chance to win in my estimation. He is definitely running though and has been for some time now. No surprise this news “came out” on a Friday and I bet that despite the fact most stories don’t carry through the weekend into the next week, I have confidence that this media will make sure that this story gets reignighted at the very start of next week. The NYTimes will have it on page one Monday not tomorrow.
Zetterson on March 9, 2007 at 2:18 PM
Conservatives mercifully attack libs for being hypocritical on the infidelity issues with Clinton, so I would hope that conservatives would avoid looking foolish and resist the temptation to excuse the action when it’s a Republican.
You can’t bash Clinton for his womanizing and then come up with lame excuses for Republicans such as Giuliani and Gingrich who do the same.

BJ Clinton: All the freaking time, so why would I need to force anyone into it?

The Gallup poll article linked in this post entitled Mitt Romney Still Unknown to Many Republicans does some odd things with the presentation of the stats.
They group Gore, Clinton, and Edwards as Moderately Well-Liked and categorize Romney Alone as the breaks-even candidate which seems very arbitrary considering the unfavorable/favorable ratios they’re using. McCain, the least Very-Well-Liked candidate, has a ratio of 0.44 (unfavorable/favorable). John Edwards’s ratio is 0.55 much closer to McCain than to Gore (0.71) and Clinton (0.78). Clinton is only 0.05 distant from Romney (0.83) but 0.23 from Edwards. Gore is only 0.12 from Romney, but 0.16 from Edwards.
Another oddity is in the favorability rating trend contrast between Romney and Barack. Between Feb 2007 and March, both improved their favorability with the general public, 5%. But the authors imply Barack is doing much better improving favorability with voters than Romney. But considering that Romney’s recognition stats, a 5% increase of favorability means that, among people who recognize him well enough to response favorably or unfavorably, his favorability increase 28% during that period. Barack only improved his favorability 9% among his group.

I don’t recall bashing Clinton for his womanizing, or anyone else for that matter. Clinton’s blatant PERJURY was at issue. I don’t think womanizing should be THE issue of our time during this time. We need someone who’s been around the block, has major experience, and knows how to trudge through the quagmire of political BS. Gingrich is the man.
Liberals always try to make it about Clinton’s messing around with the intern. It was about his lying under oath. Something they find hideous when it has to do with Libby, apparently.

Love the idea of a President Fred Thompson, but could we have Dennis Miller or Ron Silver as VP and put R. Lee Ermey in as either SecDef or White House Press Secretary (even better!) or put Drew Carey as Press secretary and Tom Selleck as Secretary of State…
Seriously, Thompson has great Conservative bona fides and he has a great image as a “kicking ass and taking names” kind of guy.
Just what we need!
(Newt’s a loser. Sorry NWTR. As a woman, I can’t forgive his piggish behavior to his first wife and then there’s his other indiscretions that caused him to resign as Speaker.
When you’re the Republican speaker of the House and you’ve just ushered in a new day with a Republican majority as he did, you have to be like Caesar’s wife–above reproach–and Newt was hardly that.
For this he blew not only his position of power but his moral authority in confronting the corrupt Clintons Administration.
You just don’t get second chances after that, in my book.
But by running, he will put a spotlight on Conservative values and get all the other GOP candidates to focus on that.)

Hmmm, Thompson/Tancredo, I’ve said it before. Pray folks, it works. And while we’re dreaming big, I’ll take Rudy for Attorney General, since that’s his real area of excellence; Newt for State, Brownback for Defense.
