Ehrenstein would have been on firmer ground if he limited his critique to media coverage of Obama, where there’s some truth to what he says. The reason the “Magic Negro” meme has purchase in Hollywood has less to do with racism, I suspect, than sensitivity to the accusation of racism, for which they overcompensate by assigning the most cartoonishly noble and good-natured roles to black actors. That was part of the joke in having a black actor play God in that Sarah Silverman bit that got everyone so exercised. It’s not hard to imagine the media responding the same way, policing itself for unconscious racism so intently that it ends up here, with Obama seemingly capable of healing the sick if he just concentrated hard enough. [...] Viacom initially was going to partner with some other media conglomerates to form an alternative to YouTube, but they pulled out of that late last year. Since then, they’ve done something very smart — they’ve created their own embeddable clips, one of which was featured on this very site just last week. I’ve wondered for months why the cable news networks haven’t done that with their news shows. Put your best clips online as soon as they air, in embeddable format, with a 10-second ad right up front. We’ll post ‘em; they’d make my job a hell of a lot easier, quite frankly. The downsides of doing it that way instead of letting consumers upload them are (a) we’d probably have to wait several hours until the shows had aired on the west coast before the network made them available, and (b) the clips wouldn’t be edited to emphasize the part we want our readers. It’d have to be done with time cues or, ideally, with some additional widget built in to the embeddable player that would let you “edit” inside the window. That shouldn’t be too hard to do. [...]

I think we have finally gotten to the point where comedians can no longer be “edgy” or “push the envelope.” They tore open the envelope long ago. Movies like “American Pie” and comedians like Carlos Mencia cross every line and offend every religion and person. Remember the Comedy Central special at Chrismas called “merry F**king Christmas?” Nothing is sacred. But nothing is funny either.

Shock comedy just isn’t shocking (or funny) anymore imo.

The point is, there’s no reason to think of this as some sort of crack about Jesus or Christianity.

From the girl who gave us Jesus Is Magic? That’s a leap I’m unwilling to take.
This looks like psycho-melo-psychodrama to me.

I’ve caught her being (I think pretty much) her candid self on Adam Carolla’s radio show. She’s quick and smart and funny and warm and delightful and has all the substance of marzipan.
Listen to her speak her mind and she seems closer to 20 years of age than 40 but in fact 40 is coming up on her in a hurry.

If that was the case, then why did Hindu extremists block a Christian missionary and his two young sons into their vehicle while they were sleeping, then burn them alive? Why didn’t they recognize the “riff on the concept?” The man and his sons had done nothing wrong, broke no law, were unarmed and helpless. People are getting their heads broken all over the world for being Christians and you dismiss it as “riff”? Obviously, life in America is too comfortable. We don’t know what we have.

And by the way. I would never heard of this show if AP hadn’t posted it. This skit is extremely offensive, on many, many levels. There are other ways to illustrate the absurdity of shallowness than in this manner. South Park does a spectacularly better job, and as a cartoon, it gives the audience the distance it needs to help the absurdity. Why was this so important to post? It’s just one more in your face slap at anyone who takes the God of Abraham, Issac, Joseph and Daniel seriously. Is that really necessary?

As far as I can remember, there was no talk about Jesus or Christianity in the entire episode. The “God” that appeared seemed to be nothing more than a generic incarnation of God, a concept the vast majority of the world believes in, at least nominally.

Muslims refer to God as they know him as “Allah”, which is Arabic for “God”. But Sarah Silverman is not Arabic or Muslim. So why the hell would she call God “Allah”?

The point is, there’s no reason to think of this as some sort of crack about Jesus or Christianity. Or Judaism, since Sarah Silverman is Jewish. It’s just a riff on a concept that billions of people throughout the world believe in in one form or another.

What makes you think I’m being self-righteous? You’re the one cooking up alternate vocabularies, evidently, the usual lingo isn’t good enough for you. Is it for YOU to decide what is blasphemous to a person of a religion you don’t even practice yourself? Since when? Isn’t that the epitome of bigotry, coming off your own keyboard? You thought the woman was funny. That’s yours. Why should it make you nervous that other people find it cringing because they resepct and honor God? She meant it to be rude and insulting, she scored! Bet she won’t do the same schitck with the Muslims nor with, say, the Yanamamo of the Amazon River Basin who’d pound her over the head for mocking their religious beliefs. She’s a coward. She mocks the one religion whose followers won’t do her in. It’s getting really old to see this kind of junior high behavior in adults.
