Don’t be so hard on Jack. He has a reason for his almost perpetually bad mood. He explained it in the very same forum (“The Vagina Monologues”) as the former Mayor’s wife. It came before Donna Hanover’s “Rudy Doesn’t Like Mine Anymore” and after Paris Hilton’s “There’s No One Left Who Hasn’t Seen Mine” I believe his reading was entitled : “Sand in My Vagina- How it Just Ruins My Day”

All of the major candidates and potential candidates have a few graveyards in their closets.

As to Wife #2 being hurt by the announcement… it’s not like it was a true surprise. Their marriage was over and amicable divorces that involve children, other people, and a long relationship don’t exist. Examining the specific bad acts of a divorce isn’t really useful, since they’re all bad in their own special cruelties. Newtie isn’t exactly a paragon on this either.

With all the bad news since 9/11, with the nastiness from 2000/2004, with the country so divided and contentious, with no skeleton-free candidates on both sides, it will be hard to ‘nail’ any candidate on this/that past.

In Newt Gingrich’s view it will/should be about a substantive debate, actually a series of them – and may the best man/woman then win.
