comeon fellas. You have 2500 years of social, political, religious, cultural, ethical, and scientific evolution packed into your brains. This movie isn’t about ‘oh joyful and enlightened Sparta’, it is about testosterone. Why does everything have to have ‘meaning’? Still waiting for the sequel to “Howard the Duck!” And when is Kevin Smith going to get off his rear and do “Dogma II -The Young Messiah” and a movie based on “Bluntman and Chronic.” Oh well, we can only hope.

I hoping the topic movie will be as good as the previews. Still, it is a good story to tell around a campfire.

To pretend like the Spartans were even close to a democracy or even a republic is insulting. They had a constitution, true. But above all their government was totalitarian. Unless you don’t consider regulations on all aspects of your life totalitarian.

Nonfactor…. please accept my sincere apology, I was wrong and you were right. I should have read more closely before opening my pie hole. As I read more completely on Wiki I came across the quote below.

The Spartan government was by many standards considered totalitarian. Laws regulated everything from child birth to beards and the length of males’ hair. —- from Wiki

I still don’t understand why free men would fight voluntarily for a system that enslaved them…. nevertheless the references to Sparta being totalitarian are out there. Very sorry about that…. I will really try not to do that again.

Of course Sparta was not Fascist, they were fighting as FREE men. This shows us that Nonfactor does not know the definition of Fascist. Sparta had a Constitutional system and was much closer to being a Republic rather than totalitarian, which fascist states always are.

I think, as AP suggested, an accurate portrayal of “Thermopylae would be fascinating but this one’s based on a comic book, and it looks it”.

That said, it looks interesting and I’ll probably buy the DVD.

Sparta was more like Atlanta in 1855, with the area’s original inhabitants, the Helots, as their pickaninnies (who kept revolting for their own freedom… so much for that much-vaunted Spartan “freedom”… which was of the “for the good ole boys only” variety… with buy children being taken by the State at 7 and raised like Hitlerjungen).

But you shouldn’t confuse a good simple story idea – valorous death in the face of overwhelming odds- with the facts.

The Persians were worse, and Sparta produced some courageous men who wanted to avoid being absorbed into that giant alien tyranny, liking their own, little, local brand better.

I’ll rent “Spartacus” and see a real struggle for liberty.

Woody Strode beats the hell out of any CGI anyday.

As I wrote in my mini-review, “300″ is definitely NOT anti-Bush. It has nothing to do with Bush. If you read that into it, you’re really stretching. But, if anything, it’s about fighting for liberty at all cost–ie., to the death. And it’s overall a good and entertaining–if extremely bloody and gory–movie.
