Good viewing here, thanks to a tip from NewsBusters. The Nightly News is in Iraq all week; Brian Williams spent yesterday on a flyover of the Sunni hotspots of Hit and Ramadi while Richard Engel was with the 82nd Airborne as they rolled into Sadr City. There’s a lot to worry about still: the Sunni situation sounds much improved, but whether that will remain true after American money stops flowing to the sheikhs is unclear. As for Sadr City, one of the Sadrist papers is reporting that the neighborhood council has rejected the presence of U.S. personnel at the “mini-fort” being constructed in the neighborhood. The excuse is that the residents are opposed to the occupation, but watch this and judge for yourself.
The first clip should roll immediately into the second, but in case not, just click the images to watch both. The first is Williams…
…and the second is Engel.

Hmmm, that doesn’t seem to square up to the rhetoric we hear coming from the far left. I wonder why?

9 Soldiers died yesterday…you can figure since we like statistics so much in the MSM that 6 of them died because of lack of support at home.
tomas on March 6, 2007 at 9:15 AM
You’ve keep hearing that from Iraqis? Maybe it should have crossed your mind by now.
amerpundit on March 6, 2007 at 9:17 AM
I was sadly amused when Williams remarked “I have to go back to NY and do a broadcast where every evening there are politicians telling me that we should leave” or some such.
Please guys! Don’t ruin my storyline…

Brian Williams standing in Baghdad, talking about progress being made, and Iraqis rebuilding their lives.
That’s progress.

Why does Congress want to run?
Because they couldn’t do what the military is doing and consequently Congress thinks that if they can’t do it, no one can.
This is the same congress that made a toilet that doesn’t flush, and gave you Prohibition, while keeping the sherry on the house cafeteria tables. The same congress that is exempt from the rules that they make for you.

Ya’ll realize that Michelle and Byran are the reason these NBC guys are on the ground, on location. How can the news claim it’s too tough to report, when two bloggers showed up, walked the streets and cranked out all sorts of interviews and video. Bragging rights: “HotAir was there when it was still hot.” Enjoy. Good job, too!
naliaka on March 6, 2007 at 9:48 AM
Babs,
Actually, I think that was a great question because it gives the guy with his boots on the ground and his ass in the line of fire the opportunity to address that meme directly. I’m glad to see Williams openly invite the counterpoint and from someone who actually knows what the heck they’re talking about.
Whatever is the left going to do when Bush’s plan
, and the Iraqi consencus when all is said and done is “Thank you, America”?

OH a hit piece is a coming. A big one you can be sure.

The US as Daddy Warbucks? Weird imagery.
aengus on March 6, 2007 at 10:09 AM
I repeated the whole quote for the “or 12 of them” line. It seems to me that what Williams is admitting is that the “we’ve-got-to-get-out” politicians are pretty much the only ones the MSMers seek out for newscast comment.

If there was a coalition that was equal to the first gulf war, yet the mandate was to liberate. Do you believe we would be much farther along? I can’t get my mind around people doing nothing. I try but I can’t. I’m beginning to think I’m just naive.
tomas on March 6, 2007 at 10:16 AM
Wonder if we will see some graffiti saying “HotAir was here.” Maybe a line on a wall at Michelle’s height saying you can not enter here unless you are this tall.
Wade on March 6, 2007 at 10:20 AM
Our biggest mistake wasn’t going in with more and clearing every town of insurgents and Iraqi military. Rather we rolled around them thinking they would fall in love with the liberation. You know what they say about hindsight…

So, the MSM finally gets out of the green zone and does their own reporting instead of relying on stringers. And what do you know; they find progress and good news to report. I am waiting for them to acknowledge that what is happening is a result of the surge and that withdrawl is the exactly wrong stragety to adopt.

First impression, setup for a thirteen-inch-punch hit piece. We’ll see, I guess.
spmat on March 6, 2007 at 10:47 AM
Well 90 people died along with 9 soldiers…is that a success?
tomas on March 6, 2007 at 10:51 AM
I guess since NBC Nightly News is at all-time ratings low (ABC is actually higher than they are in the ratings), they have got nothing to lose by not pandering to the Left. I was actually stunned to see Williams and Engel reporting that the escalation is having a positive effect. Usually Williams (perhaps at the behest of his producers? who knows?) bends over backwards to make our efforts abroad look cartoonish.
Mindcrime on March 6, 2007 at 10:53 AM
Let’s look at who does well in the ratings: Fox news. I watched ABC last night and noticed they are less liberal than CBS or NBC. Could that be why they do better? I think so.
The Jihad Watch staff remain skeptical about long-term prospects with any Islamic country. Everything in the Arab world is a conspiracy and, while they may not want us to leave, they’re the problem. They’re unable to ever take accountability for their own actions and demand that we remain to keep them safe and pay them jizyah. Enough is enough.
What we have accomplished: We’ve put Saudi Arabia in a position to worry about the Shia (the new Zionists). Hopefully, they can fight amongst themselves (Sunni vs. Shia) until Saudi Arabia ceases to be the ideological and monetary sponsor behind the global jihad. The fact that the king met with Ahmadinejad means that he’s worried. More worried about the Shia than the Jews. I apologize if this sounds defeatist, but this is the reality with the Islamic world.
PRCalDude on March 6, 2007 at 11:13 AM
The problem is most are attacking the president for liberating Iraq from a brutal dictator (stupid in itself). Even if Bush is a criminal it is still the right thing to do.
The soft bigotry of low expectations will kill millions.
tomas on March 6, 2007 at 11:22 AM
Don’t be fooled by those reports. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. That is merely a chance to point at something and say, “See? we’re not biased, look at how positive we are about the WOT.”
The future will be flush with more troops dying, suicide bombers, etc.
rightside on March 6, 2007 at 11:26 AM
I hold my nose and watch Brian Williams on NBC news.
Did anybody else notice that Williams and NBC delight in showing a new suicide bomber or roadside bomb every time it happens but they did not (to my knowledge) have a single report on the massive cache of rockets and other explosives that our forces uncovered a couple of weeks ago?
There were no bombings to report on the day that the weapons were found so I watched closely to see if Mr. Williams would report on the weapons cache find. He did not.
Nobody will ever convince me that these lefties do not hate America and consciously want us to lose. These are the same kind of people (if not THE same ones) that did this country in during the Vietnam war.
How much more of this crap will the American public have to take? It has nothing to do with ‘free speech’. It has to do with treason.

WHO the heck was that and where did that network come from!
Jeeze! I just about fell off my chair! There’s frost on the ground in hell. Saddam probably had to put on his thermals.

This was hardly a redemption piece. I suppose you could find a ray of hope in Brian’s admission that he’s hearing about Iraqi’s who don’t want US troops to leave.
