PETA to jowly Oscar winner: Save the planet by going veggie

posted at 6:43 pm on March 6, 2007 by Allahpundit

This is a fun story for many reasons, not the least of which is the “Gore looks bloated” angle. (Which Drudge helpfully plays up through his choice of photo.) But the best part is what it portends: all manner of liberal special interest groups lining up to piggyback on the cause celebre du jour by tying their own, er, pet grievance into it. Look for atheists to start arguing soon that candles lit in Christian churches are one of the world’s leading causes of global warming.

This morning, PETA sent a letter to former vice president Al Gore explaining to him that the best way to fight global warming is to go vegetarian and offering to cook him faux “fried chicken” as an introduction to meat-free meals…

In the letter, PETA points out the following:

· The effect that our meat addiction is having on the climate is truly staggering. In fact, in its recent report “Livestock’s Long Shadow—Environmental Issues and Options,” the United Nations determined that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined…

PETA also reminds Gore that his critics love to question whether he practices what he preaches and suggests that by going vegetarian, he could cut down on his contribution to global warming and silence his critics at the same time.

Exit question: Can’t he just purchase some meat offsets by breeding horses or something?

PETA to jowly Oscar winner: Save the planet by going veggie

PETA’s got it all wrong: Gore only preaches – he doesn’t practice what he preaches. That means Gore can take up their fight while chowing down a big fat steak. The rest of us, on the other hand…

Hmmm…by the way, all this talk about meat has made me hungry.

How many veggies does it take to feed ManBearPig?

HerrMorgenholz

Manbearpig gets his daily veggies by eating vegetarians and his fruits by eating hippies

I think he’d have to breed polar bears. Since they are the fave animal of the Global Warming(tm) movement.

How about polar bears? Big Al’s Alaskan Grill…featuring barbequed shortribs…yummy.

If the Gorebot strictly ate vegetarian, he would need to buy fart offsets. Eating veggy probably pumps more greenhouse gas out than meat eating does. The beef industry should play that up.

Global warming? I nearly froze to death last night walking two blocks and they wanna talk about global freakin’ warming??? Everywhere I went I said “Global warming, huh?” and everybody laughed sarcastically … and this was in a Blue State. Even *they* don’t believe it anymore!

Last month was the coldest Feb in 28 years … must be all that global warming. So now they call it “climate change”. I call *that* a cop out.

We’re freezin’ our butts off and they think the polar ice caps are melting. Sometimes the libs are simply misinformed and sometimes they’re just plain stoopit.

Tony737 on March 6, 2007 at 7:23 PM

I think cutting down rain forest and whatever to grow cows is much more harmful to the environment than anything Al Gore has been talking about.

Seixon on March 6, 2007 at 7:30 PM

But wait, if we get rid of livestock, what will we use for fertilizer to grow plants? We can’t use synthetics… Manure is essential for organic farming.

What about people who can’t afford overpriced hippie food, faux chicken and dietary supplements to make up for lack of meat? (Humans are still omnivores, yes?)

I don’t think starving humans is ethical, PETA.

HAHA!!

Wouldn’t an offset be money paid to encourage being a vegetarian, or paying farmers not to breed cattle?

I dedicate the following rework of “The Lord’s Prayer” to Al Gore and the rest of his liberal carbon crusaders.
““““““““““““““““““““““““
The Gore’s Prayer

Al Father, who art in transit,
Phony be thy game.
Thy Lear-Jet hums.
Those lies you’ve spun,
About Earth, and your huge mansion.

Give us a break, your daily dread.
And forgive us with bus passes,
As we curse those flying first-class above us.
And lead us not into stagflation,
But humor us more, Sir Carbon-Knievel.

Amen!

Would the term “fat chance” be appropriate for Gore?

Big Al’s Alaskan Grill…featuring barbequed shortribs…yummy.

Why aren’t we calling ManBearPig, Big Gay Al ? It works too.

lorien1973 on March 6, 2007 at 8:35 PM

Since Al’s gone carbon-neutral by paying himself for offsets, he could probably go all the way to carbon-negative by having GIM fund research into some form of “Bovine Beano”, which will eliminate flatulence in ruminants.

eeyore on March 6, 2007 at 9:06 PM

Why can’t Al just can save the planet and end global warming with all that money he made from inventing the internet?

wryteacher on March 6, 2007 at 9:14 PM

Pigs will fly before he’ll give up his steaks and hamburgers.

He lied about the polar-bears disappearing due to icecaps melting in his documentary and some scientists are calling for his Oscar-for-a-documentary disqualification, since a documentary has to be true, or able to be transferred into truth/reality. I don’t think he meant it to be a joke or satire either.

I will almost have some sympathy for Gore if he is so forced by the politics around him that – around Thanksgiving – we see a Norman Rockwell-inspired PSA of the extended Gore clan sitting down to a meal of grilled tofu, Tofurky, Not Dogs, Soy Bacon and Veggieburgers, lit by tiny compact fluorescent candelabra, inviting America to “Join In!”…”Gosh, we’ve gotten past the near library paste taste of much of this stuff, but hey…it’s about the planet!

eeyore on March 6, 2007 at 10:16 PM

People Eating Tasty Animals reminds you that cow farts are responsible for everything that is wrong in this world. Broccoli sequesters CO2, save the broccoli.

Buzzy on March 6, 2007 at 10:42 PM

Forget the veggies – go for “green sex”.

For those who like to make love to the soundtrack of the global warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth, Greenpeace has released a list of strategies for “getting it on for the good of the planet

Oh Canada, oh Canada…

CyberCipher on March 6, 2007 at 11:01 PM

From “green sex” article I linked above, it looks like Al Gore can pull a twofer to please his cronies:

Gordon notes there’s even an eco-friendly adult website dedicated to naked vegetarians, appropriately called Veg Porn.

Entelechy on March 6, 2007 at 11:19 PM

i have a terrible terrible fear that meat-eating will be forced, like cigarettes, and later, gasoline/cars, into oblivion through higher taxes and the bellows of moral crusaders of gorebot and company.

This is a fun story for many reasons, not the least of which is the “Gore looks bloated” angle.

This had me laughing right away!
I was gonna go to the market yesterday and buy a nice ribeye. (I ended up making meat-less mostaccioli.) Too bad.

Horses? I don’t think so. American’s breed horses as a food source for other countries.

Or something? He would have to purchase dung beatles offsets for poo or some parasitic organism offsets to rid animals of those emissions. Then again, there’s always BeanO.

csdeven on March 7, 2007 at 1:23 PM

Meathead offsets, maybe.

James on March 7, 2007 at 1:42 PM

I wonder what ever happened to the Baby Harp Seals? Did they go the way of Acid Rain and the Hole in the Ozone?

One would think that Baby Harp Seals are threatened even more by global warming, so why not use the cute, furry little guys as a symbol? After all, I’d find it a lot easier to feel sorry for a defenseless Baby Harp Seal that couldn’t hurt anyone over a huge polar bear that is one of the few animals left that considers man a food source. Don’t people realize what a Polar Bear would do to them if they were caught in the open and a hungry polar bear was around? The damn thing would run you down and eat you alive!

Global Warming is threating the Polar Bears? GOOD! They’re a dangerous animal that needs to be controlled.

Global Warming is threating the Baby Harp Seals? AWWW, the poor little things! We must do something to help them!

Baby Harp Seal vs. Polar Bear, shoot the bear and hug the seal!

This morning, PETA sent a letter to former vice president Al Gore explaining to him that the best way to fight global warming is to go vegetarian and offering to cook him faux “fried chicken” as an introduction to meat-free meals

What about all the CO2 that would be produced by COOKING the veggies? I bet the CO2 emissions from burning the fuel required to cook the veggies would be much more than the amount of CO2 absorbed by the veggies while they were growing. Veggies even emit CO2 gas as they are heated and much of the absorbed CO2 is released from the plant structures like stems and leaves. If you’re not going to eat them raw, don’t even bother. And by eating the veggies, they can no longer grow and absorb the CO2, so the whole point is moot, don’t you think?
