Bill Maher: I’m sorry … that NewsBusters distorted what I said
posted at 12:22 pm on March 6, 2007 by Allahpundit
He never said he wanted Cheney dead. He merely strongly implied that it might be better for the world if it happened.
Get it right, wingnuts.
You know, for a such a fearless, slashing, abrasive truthteller, Maher’s post is awfully low key, isn’t it? You suppose HBO’s PR department had any input? It reminds me of John Lennon complaining after the Beatles broke up about how a rebel like him had had to endure the indignity of wearing a jacket and tie onstage. To which Paul drolly replied, “I don’t recall anyone having to be dragged to the tailor.” Straighten your tie, Bill.
And now, having stumbled into a comparison between John and Bill Maher, I’m depressed. Wonderful.
I was going to ask an exit question about whether Maher’s post was more or less stupid than Coulter comparing the CPAC backlash to “totalitarianism,” but let’s just let it lie, shall we?

agreeing with a statement, to the point of saying its a “FACT” is the same as saying it himself.

That has to be the worst attempt at covering up grey hair, I’ve ever seen.
Go to the salon and get it done professionally, Bill. Or try to embrace old age with the dignity you so sorely lack in your writing.

I think what would be better for the world is if Bill Maher would drop that “I’m-so-much-f’n-smarter-than-every-other-person-in-the-world” smirk and snark that makes him so nauseating.
eeyore on March 6, 2007 at 12:35 PM
It’s a wig from when he dressed up as Steve Irwin (stingray and all) for Halloween.
Esthier on March 6, 2007 at 12:35 PM
Strongly implied?
That seems more than an implication to me, but maybe you’re just being generous.
Esthier on March 6, 2007 at 12:37 PM
The brown hair is part of the Steve Irwin costume. When he’s not dressed up he sports the slicked back salt and pepper ‘do. Not really too much better, but he’s not trying to cover up his age.

And he’s right that the Newsbusters headline clearly distorted what he said. What he did say was inflammatory enough that if they would have reported it accurately I’m sure it would have generated the same rage and disgust from the usual suspects. Distorting it only hurts their credibility and helps his.

Any attack on an official of the United States is an attack on our country and its people no matter what your politics.

“I was going to ask an exit question about whether Maher’s post was more or less stupid than Coulter comparing the CPAC backlash to “totalitarianism,” but let’s just let it lie, shall we?”
Too late–it was less stupid. That’s right: ANN COULTER WORSE THAN BILL MAHER.
Alex K on March 6, 2007 at 12:49 PM
Shame, shame, Allah–you didn’t let it lie but we have to? Mean Frances.

Coulter never called Edwards a f***** either.

.
This is the REAL problem with the world today…Too many implications by both sides, not enough statements, and it’s going to get worse come election time 2008, because you can be sure no one’s going to SAY anything about what they’re prepared to do as President, just imply the Hell out of it that they’re the right ones to do something.
Let’s STOP letting them get away with it, America…The next time you get a chance to face these poseurs, hosers and losers, tell them not to IMPLY. Tell them you want them to SAY something…Risk them saying something you don’t agree with, but at least see if they have the guts to come right out with it.

I really like your picture of Maher. Truly a case where a man’s interior matches his exterior.
Also, someone would be doing Maher a huge favor if they pointed out where sideburns end and the scalp begins.
Just saying.
natesnake on March 6, 2007 at 1:23 PM
Too true. Many politicians on all sides hem and haw all day long, refusing to take a stand. If you feel a certain way about something, then SAY IT!

Wishing death on someone vs. calling someone gay.
Yes, that’s apt.

If Bill Maher was dead, little Stalinist 20 year olds would be getting their twisted view of world news from someone else.

Lesser men always fear and envy stronger men with honor and integrity. Deep down they want to be like them. Maher is no exception.

It’s comical really. MSNBC and Chris Matthews are running advertisements for an interview with John Edwards regarding Ann Coulter. The screen flashes “mean, personal, and nasty” and then over a pic of Edwards reads “what does he have to say?”
This, coming from the same network that hosts Olbermann – undeniably the King of “mean, personal, and nasty.”
Irony and hypocrisy at it’s best.
Gregor on March 6, 2007 at 2:22 PM
He sat there and put a cost benefit in human lives on Cheney being dead, but that’s ok because he didn’t actually “say” that.
Typical.

*sigh*
Ironically, I made my comments during a discussion about Free Speech, which is one of the chief reasons that I love my country.
He clumsily plays the ‘they’re trying to take away my right to free speech’ card.
Cute.

Let me see, you come home late at night and you say to the wife, “I did not fool around with any women…but it sure would have been nice if I did.”
right2bright on March 6, 2007 at 2:40 PM
We need to have a replay on those “free” cards.
right2bright on March 6, 2007 at 2:41 PM
No irony and hypocrisy is Chris Matthews starring in those “the more you know” segments talking about hate (and you shouldn’t teach it to your kids) while, every day on his show, he spews hate for republicans.
Someone should really do a montage of those two things together. It’d be a hoot.
lorien1973 on March 6, 2007 at 3:12 PM
Wow. What a picture. Is he a meth head or just drinking a lot of wood alcohol?
warriorlawyer on March 6, 2007 at 3:50 PM
I’ve seen that before…I believe that quote is from a book called, “Why Hillary Slapped The Right Side Of My Face All The Way Over To The Left Side”.
52Ranger on March 6, 2007 at 4:00 PM
Once again Maher plays the liberal game of *if you critisize me, you’re taking away my free speech*. I can’t even begin to describe how sick i am of hearing that. If liberals don’t want to be criticised for the things they say, i’d be more than happy to just beat the s**t out of them when i disagree with them. Either way is fine with me.
forged rite on March 6, 2007 at 4:09 PM
Once again, Lets all say it, “Halloween Costume.”
There would be a lot more less dead babies if pro-choicers like him weren’t around either. (no not advicating taking him out, just turning his words back on him)
- The Cat
P.S. Yes, he acknowledges that they are a life in the womb.
MirCat on March 6, 2007 at 4:14 PM
Question, if he said, “I never remembered saying those words/”, would he face the same criminal trial as Scooter Libby?
PinkyBigglesworth on March 6, 2007 at 4:19 PM
You need a vacation Allah.
Maxx on March 6, 2007 at 5:24 PM
I think Maher’s a total a**hole, but when I actually saw the clip of what he said (during the KP/MM section on O’Reilly last night), I realized that someone blew this way out of proportion, others picked up on it, and the news stories made it out to be far more inflammatory that it actually was.
Again, I think Maher’s a jerk, but his post on HuffPo is pretty accurate about what he said, if you ask me.
asc85 on March 6, 2007 at 6:05 PM
You just had to, didn’t you AP?
Rick on March 6, 2007 at 6:43 PM
I want Bill Maher’s comedy career dead. Or talk show career dead. Seriously. He’s a little funnier than Franken. And quite frankly, so is this used Kleenex.
Nethicus on March 6, 2007 at 8:46 PM
Okay, if Maher didn’t go too far again, why is he defending himself again? What an idiot.
SpartRan on March 7, 2007 at 12:12 AM
Oh, and, Bill? If you’re reading this, I’m sorry you’re still on anyone’s air. Hopefully, the powers that be at HBO will come to their senses and can your sorry @$$.
