Video: Slickly produced yet stupid anti-Hillary ad

posted at 8:15 pm on March 5, 2007 by Allahpundit

Via the New Editor, which notes that the ad doesn’t appear to have come from Obama’s camp notwithstanding the URL given at the end. Glenn credits it to “Obama supporters” but I’m not so sure about that either. I assume people know where most of the footage here comes from; the only thing that’s new is the A/V of the Glacier herself. The ad’s obviously trying to present Hillary as a monolith who’s nomination is all but assured until the plucky upstart comes along and shatters the paradigm, but presenting her as Big Brother in an Orwellian fever dream is nasty, heavy handed, and off-putting.

So the question is, who’s responsible? If this is an amateur job, it’s an unusually slick one, so let’s assume it isn’t. Is the culprit (a) Obama’s camp launching an attack on Hillary while maintaining plausible deniability through the use of an amateur YouTuber as a front man, (2) a Republican group trying to sow discord among the Democrats with a false-flag operation, or (3) Hillary’s camp fragging themselves so the Glacier can play that victim’s role she loves so well and whine a little more about the politics of personal destruction?

Hey, anybody notice how the Apple hammer thrower runner chick alla sudden has an iPod on her hip now? When did they ad that?

Oh, and AP, I could slap something liek this together in about a half-hour. It ain’t all that slick.

fusionaddict on March 5, 2007 at 8:23 PM

Heavy handed and off-putting? Allah, you’ve got to lighten up!

Jim-Rose on March 5, 2007 at 8:28 PM

You would think with all His power, Big Brother would get around to inventing the sports bra…..

Seriously, though, what are the racial overtones of this message? The Big O’s messenger is a jiggly hammer tossing Nordic chick? Is she throwing the hammer at Hillary! to support the Big O, or because Cletus promised her fidelity as soon as the old ball and chain was out of the way? America demands answers.

Steve LLamabutcher on March 5, 2007 at 8:40 PM

I actually thought it was pretty effective. The *apple* symbol at the end was done in the gay flag colors, so maybe it was done by a gay group that supports Obama.

forged rite on March 5, 2007 at 8:47 PM

Obviously, its young Hillary throwing the hammer at herself in an alternate time line in order to merge two parallel universes so that one of them can be saved by the dystopian future ruled by her tyrannical milky white fist. Don’t any of you people read Marvel comics?

Savage on March 5, 2007 at 8:50 PM

I don’t know much about video editing, but throwing in that ipod on the hip would’ve been mighty hard, I imagine. Maybe some techies at Apple did it.

Free Constitution on March 5, 2007 at 9:06 PM

I remember reading somewhere that the ipod was put there when this commercial was re-released a few years ago as a superbowl ad.

Wow, dude, you should really try and sack-up. I got nothing but love for you brother, but come on. If it was anything it was ridiculous. It could’ve been spliced into the background of anything with the same result, IMO….

I’m going to lay stakes that is was an armature job, done by a proficient mac user who is good with editing software and knows mac advertising well.

I looked it up, and right ye are.

fusionaddict on March 5, 2007 at 9:14 PM

Isn’t this modeled after an old Apple commercial involving Hitler or something from many years ago?

tommy1 on March 5, 2007 at 9:15 PM

forged rite: That multi-colored design of the “O” was just how the original Apple sign looked. You’re really young, aren’t you? ;)

tickleddragon on March 5, 2007 at 9:15 PM

No offense intended, of course…

I’m just showing my age, I guess.

tickleddragon on March 5, 2007 at 9:16 PM

Someone use the word “slick” again, quick!

tickleddragon on March 5, 2007 at 9:15 PM

I just looked it up on Wiki and came back to correct myself, but you beat me to it :). More from Wiki:

Steve Jobs commemorated the 20th anniversary of the Macintosh by starting his traditional keynote speech by playing an updated version of the “1984″ commercial. In this updated version, an iPod, complete with signature white earbuds, was digitally added to the heroine. Attendees were given a poster showing the heroine with iPod as a commemorative gift

forged rite on March 5, 2007 at 9:19 PM

slick…
Happy, RW? ;)

tickleddragon on March 5, 2007 at 9:20 PM

LoL! I just read the wiki on the original commercial. It was directed by Ridley Scott just after he did Bladerunner (figures), apples’ board canned it; but, apparently Woz liked it so much he wanted to buy the airtime personally and air it!

what a roit those mac guys are!

liquidflorian on March 5, 2007 at 9:20 PM

I rather enjoyed it. Anti-Hillary add? What’s not to like?

Buck Turgidson on March 5, 2007 at 9:21 PM

Well, now..there you are, forged rite. I never saw the updated commercial.

But the rainbow icon…burned into my memory…as a “child of the 80s”. That was before it was co’opted by the “Gay Movement”. Anybody here remember the rainbow suspenders (a la Mork)? ROFL.

tickleddragon on March 5, 2007 at 9:23 PM

I was watching this the entire time thinking that this commercial was exactly like Futurama’s Planet Express commercial when the 80′ guy was revived and helped Fry take over the company.

‘My only regret…is that I have…boneitis…’

Well that’ll be even funnier the next time I see it…

Canadian Infidel on March 5, 2007 at 9:28 PM

Don’t worry about Hillary Clinton, let me worry about blank.

Savage on March 5, 2007 at 9:40 PM

Heavy-handed…as opposed to taking corporate profits that belong to share-holders?

flipflop on March 5, 2007 at 9:43 PM

i dunno. i think it could be an amateur job.

jummy on March 5, 2007 at 10:19 PM

Well, whoever the heck did it, they need to go to rehab!

csdeven on March 5, 2007 at 10:19 PM

I liked it, especially Hillary’s image on all the small screens while they walked in the tube…..

To that matter…….

Oh, and AP, I could slap something liek this together in about a half-hour. It ain’t all that slick.

fusionaddict on March 5, 2007 at 8:23 PM

I think someone just threw the hammer down, go ahead, ask them to pick it up……. maybe on with Al Gore, as the leader of the “Eco-facist Church”, telling all in attendance their sins and creating “Global Warming”, but don’t bring the Sun into it……..

PinkyBigglesworth on March 5, 2007 at 10:22 PM

And I thought worms were only found tequila?

Kini on March 5, 2007 at 10:30 PM

In worms in tequila that is….

Kini on March 5, 2007 at 10:30 PM

Since it is simply the Mac commercial edited, I would suggest it could be considered no more nasty, heavy handed, and off-putting than Steve Jobs original statement about IBM – particularly given the inside-joke of using it for the same new-challenger-in-town sentiment.

eeyore on March 5, 2007 at 10:34 PM

but presenting her as Big Brother in an Orwellian fever dream is nasty, heavy handed, and off-putting. —- Allahpundit

Not stupid…. it’s a fair representation of what Hillary wants to do….. Socialized Medicine, TAKE profits from the Oil companies…. sign up for “global warming taxes”… every commie left wing cause endorsed. Not stupid…. just Hillary’s ideal dream world portrayed.

Maxx on March 5, 2007 at 11:36 PM

Somebody ripped off an old Apple iPod commercial (in which the same meme was also an Apple Computer commercial years before iPod) and made it an anti-Billary commercial… it doesn’t appear to be “slickly produced”, it appears to be a rip-off Obamabat’s wet dream.

You can see that the war-hammer throwing lass is wearing an iPod as she runs and as she throws the hammer. Anyway, is it Apple’s doing? Are they anti-Billary & pro-Obama, or did some shmo out in the world rip off Apple’s copyright to make an inane anti-Billary commercial?

SilverStar830 on March 5, 2007 at 11:48 PM

A Surmountable Hill Glacier
Mrs. Clinton seems less inevitable after this week.

It was produced by the Vast Right Glacier Conspiracy (VRGC).

Steve LLamabutcher on March 5, 2007 at 8:40 PM

What? That was a Southern woman you could tell by her accent. In fact, it may have been Obama’s mother….

Tim Burton on March 6, 2007 at 3:19 AM

“stupid, nasty, heavy handed, and off-putting?”

Hmm. I disagree.

Its extremely well done and pushes exactly the correct anti-Hillary buttons. It brings to mind the SBVT ads, subtle with powerful underlying emotional anchors.

What is pretty much universally accepted by people both left and right is that Hilly is power mad and thinks she knows how you should live your life, get your health care, is mendacious, brutal and overbearing. Even my lefty wife acknowledges these things about her. That ad communicates all those things without actually saying them – always the hallmark of good political advertising.

Whoever ends up running against Hillary! in the general election will have to push the same buttons one way or another.

Dwilkers on March 6, 2007 at 7:49 AM

Factoid: this ad (the original Apple one) ran one time only, as a Super Bowl ad. Was considered breath-taking at the time.

All anyone running against Hillary has to do is run a tape of her speech at Selma. I don’t know whether to laugh, be offended, moan….inexplicible. Imus ripped this so badly this morning, Bernie commenting that before her race with Obama is over she’ll be sporting gold teeth, corn rows and throwing crip signs. Yikes.

This is good news for the Dems IMO; Hillary would be too easy a target. If she folds, there will be more oxygen for more electable candidates. Or not…..;^)

Darn good thing Ann Coulter didn’t say that, the PC police would definitely be dragging her off to the re-education camp. But Since Bernie said it…. I guess it’s OK.

Well if Bernie were to say this at a Dem equivolent of the CPAC, it would be a different story. But he didn’t.

But don’t let that stop you from enjoying the vicarious glow of victimhood. What a country.

honora on March 6, 2007 at 10:22 AM

Stupid? Off-putting? Heavy handed? Allah, my man. You either need to take a Valium and relax or sign up for a remedial “Girding your loins for battle 101″ class.

What we need to do is find out who did this, do what it take to flip them, and put them to work for us. Ann Coulter could consult.

dostrick on March 6, 2007 at 11:27 AM

See how sending a hundred to Edward’s campaign brought on by an insult helps defeat the libs?

So much for the love affair between Obama and Hill.

Speakup on March 6, 2007 at 3:02 PM

Yeah yeah honora whatever.

Maxx on March 6, 2007 at 5:31 PM

To answer the question: this is not a “remake” but the actual original commercial, with Hillary’s image inserted to replace the image of an IBM/”Big Brother” figure.

I’m surprised a little that Allahpundit has never seen this before. It’s one of the most famous Superbowl commercials in history.

I’m also disappointed to see another figurehead in conservative online media make a Luddite comment that this looks “slick”. (It’s another instance the Left blogosphere will point to, suggesting the Right is far behind).

As digital edit of the original commercial, this is pretty much a quick and dirty hack job. Doubt it took one person more than a couple of ours. Or a day if he lacks talent.

Huge ditto here dostrick. I just watch Boxer go through her little intimadation of Imhoffe in front of the Gorabacle and craped right in his face. Oh, is payback going to be s super-bit**h in 08′!!! These Dem’s have done SQUAT since they took over the House but the power is in the Senate before it reaches the Pres’s desk. They have no ideas, no plans, nothing positive for America but tumolt, turmoil, and confusion, higher taxs, more gubbamint and Socialism bar none.
