The problem with Ann

Check this out: Ann Coulter is raising campaign cash for John Edwards!

Dear Friend,

Did you hear about Anne Coulter’s speech this afternoon attacking John? A friend just forwarded me the video and it’s one of the worst moments in American politics I’ve seen.

I can’t bring myself to even repeat her comments. Her shameless display of bigotry is so outrageous you actually have to see for yourself to believe it.

This is just a taste of the filth that the right-wing machine is gearing up to throw at us. And now that it’s begun, we have a choice: Do we sit back, or do we fight back?

I say we fight. Help us raise $100,000 in “Coulter Cash” this week to show every would-be Republican mouthpiece that their bigoted attacks will not intimidate this campaign. I just threw in 100 bucks. Will you join me? Just click here.

Coulter’s attack was no accident. It happened on national television at one of the year’s biggest conservative conferences. Dick Cheney and most of the Republican candidates were in the audience. She was even introduced by Mitt Romney.

John was singled out for a personal attack because the Republican establishment knows he poses the greatest threat to their power. Since they have nothing real to use against him, Coulter’s resorting to the classic right-wing strategy of riling up hate to smear a progressive champion. And the Republican attack dogs will keep playing this despicable trick as long as they think it works.

But this time, you and I can change the game.

If we can raise $100,000 in “Coulter Cash” this week, we can show that bigotry will only backfire on those who use it. John is not the first progressive leader to face this kind of slime, but together, we can make sure he is one of the last.

Tonight, I’ve put in 100 bucks of “Coulter Cash” to get us started. Can you match me, or chip in whatever you can afford? Just click here:

http://johnedwards.com/r/6665/839078

Thanks,

David Bonior
Campaign Manager
John Edwards for President

There’s a great deal of political silliness and wishful thinking in that letter–it is a political money pitch for a third-place candidate, after all–but at its core it contains a message that’s likely to resonate. That message is, Republicans are just hateful, horrible people and you need to stop them (by giving us your money, now for the campaign, and in the future through taxes). True, Democrats always say that. But Miss Ann gave them a shred of evidence upon which to convict us all.

And, what’s the big headline coming out of CPAC? Is it that Josh Sparling won a much-deserved award? Is it that conservatives remain committed to the war for freedom against terrorism? Is it that this post-blowout CPAC was the largest CPAC ever? Was it that I got to be on a teevee show?

No. The headline coming out of CPAC is that Ann Coulter said an awful thing. Which is what she wants, since it’ll keep her profile up and help her sell books. She doesn’t care that conservative heroes and leaders and thousands of other less known conservatives who were present will end up getting tarnished by her remarks. She doesn’t care that she’s putting the CPAC organizers in a bind, since she’s their biggest draw but also their biggest liability. She probably doesn’t care that she’s John Edwards’ spokesmodel. She probably likes the attention. It’s all about Ann. And that’s the problem.

You do realize that the source of your righteous indignation is Ann Coulter’s use of the word “faggot”
Is this where you draw your line in the sand?

billy on March 4, 2007 at 1:24 AM

um, what do you say i am accusing her of exactly?
what are you trying to say that she never said?

tikvah on March 4, 2007 at 1:24 AM

Childish, yes, Ann’s point, maybe, the result, Spot On!

Do you realize that this “term” {”faggot”} was outlawed by the left years ago, and now we are free to talk about it????

Doesn’t anyone else see the bigger picture here and the liberation from the PC bovine feces Ann has cracked open?

Sometimes, I think we all take ourselves a little too seriously, and have been castrated into “new speak”!

Well done, Ann, I got the message……..

BBBWWWAAAHAHAHAHA………

liberal-approval-seeking angst.

georgej on March 4, 2007 at 12:11 AM

To those of you who think all of us who think she’s an ass for saying “faggot”: You are totally, completely, embarrassingly missing the point.

This has absolutely nothing to do with seeking approval from bed-wetting leftists, nor does it have to do with any of these other fallacies you’ve dreamed up.

It’s like this: Suppose she was talking about Barack Obama. Suppose she said, “I’d call him a nigger, but then I’d have to go to rehab.”

Is THAT okay with you too?

“Faggot” is a perjorative, as is “wetback” or “nigger” or whatever. The sad thing is that some of y’all don’t even know how the word affects its intended targets. And fer cryin’ out loud, this “she didn’t call him a faggot” idiocy is ridiculous. NO, she didn’t. That is NOT the point. (See also: the Obama example.)

This isn’t about political correctness (God knows I’m certainly not PC)–it’s about basic human decency.

bamapachyderm on March 4, 2007 at 1:33 AM

Ugh! Good night.

thedecider on March 4, 2007 at 1:37 AM

Thanks, bama. I am getting too tired to pound out a response that made sense, so there you go.

tikvah on March 4, 2007 at 1:38 AM

Not a fan of Coulter, but isn’t this over the top? Powers Point ran a hit piece on Edwards that all but accused him of being unmoved by child porn and virtual rape. and that video was posted on Hot Air

Ann Coulter’s a near 50 year old hippy, and likely calls people “fag” or things “faggy” all the time. She’s wrong to do it, but she’s hardly the worst part of the Conservative movement we Republicans have to put up wi..I mean embrace in our big tent.

Rob Taylor on March 4, 2007 at 1:39 AM

billy on March 4, 2007 at 1:24 AM

At 1:15 am I said nothing about faggots. I was refering to the word “jap”.

Not sure what you’re getting at.

csdeven on March 4, 2007 at 1:40 AM

So we can’t call someone a faggot, but we can call people fundamentalists and theocrats….Ok, I got you.

Heck, I’m still waiting for the apologies over the years for the attacks on Creationists both by posters on this site and else where….

Tim Burton on March 4, 2007 at 1:40 AM

I can’t speak for all conservatives, but I subscribe to principles of common decency, respect for others, and calm political discourse, not name-calling and hatred. Applying this across ethnic or sexual preference lines does not make one a PC-freak.

tikvah on March 4, 2007 at 1:03 AM

John from WuzzaDem on March 4, 2007 at 1:41 AM

bamapachyderm on March 4, 2007 at 1:33 AM

That is not what she said. She said if you use the word faggot you have to go to rehab. Where in that did she say she was going to call him a faggot? The key word is “rehab”. Anyone that “gets” Ann knows that she was talking about PC run amok.

csdeven on March 4, 2007 at 1:44 AM

I don’t see why so many people are upset with Ann Coulter over calling Edwards a faggot.

It admittedly doesn’t make much sense, as he is not particuly skinny, but how is calling someone a ‘bundle of sticks’ some sort of really horrible thing?

The ONLY definition given for ‘faggot’ in my little old paperback dictionary is: ” n. Bundle of sticks.{OFr}

LegendHasIt on March 4, 2007 at 1:46 AM

Well gosh no obviously I am not a wizard…after all how can I be a wizard when I don’t subscribe to the notions all of you so called conservatives ascribe to. Such as adopting the idiocy of “Hate Speech” muahaha…too much really. Stop you are making my sides hurt. Whats next where you explain to me the role Patriarchy has in oppressing women?

yes, and the precision guided super-secret weapon you have in mind is…bigoted name-calling which sends huge chunks of the populace running into the enemy’s arms.

you’re a wizard at this political strategy stuff.

Yea well we have been playing nice for a long time and we have gotten our Universities fairly over run by folks who can explain everything there is to know about Marx and no one who can explain Adam Smith. But hey lets keep playing nice with the left.

Coulter attacks the left and she attacks their silly ass notions of perverting our language to suit their purpose. Course watching the scene around the so-called conservative blogs has been pretty depressing. Struck me long ago how absurd the “right” actually was….truth is the “Right” as defined by Goldwater no longer exists.

The defining moment came when the National Review ejected Ann Coulter for saying the obvious after 9/11.

We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren’t punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That’s war. And this is war.

Ann Coulter - September 2001
– On The War on Terror –

Oh my the panties were all a twitter with that truth. My we cannot say that oh no the Muslims are our friends….they love us. Thats when I knew that the National Review as defined by James Burnham no longer existed….instead what we had were a bunch of college kids who were clever wordsmiths but devoid of principals, or more correctly were trying to fit Marxist principals into their idea of conservative thought.

Since I am not feeling particularly like educating you go read this by Baron Bodissey Political Correctness — The Revenge of Marxism

You people would faint if you were forced to utter Halsey’s famous words of Inspiration…

“KILL JAPS! KILL JAPS! KILL MORE JAPS! You will help to kill the yellow bastards if you do your job well ”

you realize that bryan’s wife is japanese, don’t you?

jummy on March 4, 2007 at 12:08 AM

Are you a parody of yourself? Dear man Admiral Halsey did indeed utter those words. Not only that but those words were emblazoned on a Huge sign coming into the Naval Base at Pelugi (sp?) but just like those pansies at National Review all you can see is oooh me we have called people names and we were harsh…oooh. me.

Our society will lose this war we are in because instead of men who can utter those words we have kids who apologize for those words. We were at war….not that you can tell.

And yes Ann in her own barbed way is fighting the war by waking up folks to the perversion of our language by the left. Furthermore unless you have proven otherwise she has done more in this war than either you or I.

PierreLegrand on March 4, 2007 at 1:46 AM

Just out of curiosity I looked-up the Log Cabin Republicans website and spent a few minutes looking it over. I wanted to see what they had to say about all of this. I think I hit every major link on the page, but I couldn’t find a single reference to Ann Coulter’s remarks. Seems to me they have had plenty of time to post something about it, if it was an issue to them. And as far as I can see, they have not. If the Log Cabin Republicans aren’t making a fuss over this, I don’t know why the rest of us Republicans should be.

We need to understand that the left will continue to call Republicans… Bible-humping twisted warmongering racist snakehandling hatebot toothless Christofascists homophobes … no mater how well we learn to coddle their tender sensibilities. Annie understands this.

Maxx on March 4, 2007 at 1:47 AM

One more thing:

Ann Colter used the term “faggot” in a bad joke, and the right wing blogs are eating their own…

OMG, since when do any of the people who are defending this NOT eat their own? Between the loons who call for “Jorge Bushito” to be impeached and others who call anyone to the right of Pat F’n Buchanan a RINO (or even funnier, a liberal!) to Coulter HERSELF in about a brazillion examples…well, that’s just hilarious. If anything, Coulter’s fanboys are the poster children for “eating one’s own.” Good grief.

Priceless!

bamapachyderm on March 4, 2007 at 1:49 AM

Wrong. She was talking about him being Silky Pony, which is well-deserved. She COULD have said “silky pony” or “Breck Girl” or “ambulance-chaser” or any number of things. She chose “faggot” instead.

And the punch line wasn’t about being PC, it was about celebrity f-ups going to rehab to “rehab” their public image.

Still not getting the point, are you?

John from WuzzaDem on March 4, 2007 at 1:59 AM

Well we all can think of certain words that would make the left cry really really loud, and the use of which wouldn’t mean that we’re doing something really really right. Wrong is wrong and that’s just the way it is. Politics seems to be creating moral blind spots for some people.

Bryan on March 4, 2007 at 12:21 AM

So calling someone names is now part of morality? Can you please show me where in Natural Law or even in the 10 Commandments it stated to be wrong? Maybe it was in the 10.887 Commandment.

It may not be nice, it may not be polite, but wrong….Nah. You should read some of the speeches during the late 1850s and during 1860. That was ugly.

You won’t see me complaining about name calling. It may not be rational, but coming from Ann it sure is funny.

@ SouthernGent…

Awesome! Glad I’m not alone here…I’m in Connecticut, ironically in the same town that produced Ann Coulter, and I work in Manhattan.

And don’t get me wrong, peeps…I actually enjoy Coulter’s books, and really get a kick out of her comments on liberals. And I realize that her comment wasn’t a dig on gays. But the term she used is offensive.

It’s not “helping the LEFT” when we “police” our own…In any event, the comment was pure Coulter. It wasn’t suprising…but she shouldn’t have said it. As it’s been stated, she should have left the stage a minute earlier, and all would have been OK…

So let’s focus on all the good stuff that came out of this CPAC conference, and by the looks of it, a lot of good did.

OT: Very much looking forward to joining with everyone going to DC on the 17th as A Gathering of Eagles. The Lefites don’t know what they’re in for.

“and the Right Wing blogs are eating their own”…That, sadly. says it all.

DoctorDentons on March 4, 2007 at 6:46 AM

I haven’t the slightest problem with hard-right folks (like me) claiming that Ann’s choice of words was unnecessary. But as has been said here before, you know what you’re getting when you get Ann Coulter. This isn’t a “botched” joke. It was a joke. And as an obvious joke, there really ought to be a bit of latitude in its telling.

I know what sort of response it draws if I say that I won’t watch Eddie Murphy movies because they are crude, vulgar and profane. I get scorned for being narrow-minded and uptight. I get told to loosen up, and learn to see the humor. I see it, he’s extremely funny, but unfortunately also too profane for me.

So where’s the line? By the standards of how so many people choose to take comics, you can get away with being non-PC while telling a joke. Unless you’re a conservative, then you’re just a hater. Gimme a break.

The only thing that should really be laughable is the socialists getting any mileage out of this. And if the sheeple on the right nod their heads and say “Yes, we agree, Ann was very wrong to have said such a terrrrrrible thing”, then yes, you are helping the libs get mileage out of a nothing.

Loosen up, it’s just a joke.

Freelancer on March 4, 2007 at 6:52 AM

Hey, did you guys know that Republicans would still control the Senate if not for one word in one unfortunate comment?

Macaca.

The brave, patriotic thing for conservatives to do is to hand the left ammunition to paint them all as hateful lunatics. Even braver and more patriotic if it’s captured on video.

Maybe we can get Newt to slip “K*ke” or “Nigg*r” into a speech, hmmm? Or we could get Ollie to let fly with “Diaper-headed goat f*cker”. Honor and Glory and Valor and Truthiness will belong to the right! Victory? Not so much.

The interesting thing about all this is that those who had an emotional knee-jerk reaction are now trying to use logic to justify it. That does not strike me as a conservative ideology. But it does sound disturbingly like that goon Amanda Marquette.

csdeven on March 4, 2007 at 8:51 AM

Just to reitterate what Highrise said earlier. Curt at Flopping Aces nailed it.

Too bad so many on the Right suffer from the same knee-jerk disorder as the Left.

Dumb as it was, her use of a pejorative is not as offensive as Maher wishing Cheney would die. It’s not even close.

Yet all the focus is where?

Who is asking Democrats to apologize for Maher?

drjohn on March 4, 2007 at 9:08 AM

GT on March 4, 2007 at 9:03 AM

Badda bing! I remember her comments and it’s clear that we conservatives have a lot to do within our own rank and file. Good folks all, but they just need a little open discussion where they can leave the “PC conditioning” out of it. I hate how the liberals are Pavlov and society has become their dog.

csdeven on March 4, 2007 at 9:13 AM

I demand the Democrats apologize for Henry Waxmans nostrils. I mean, what the hell, man.

Sammy316 on March 4, 2007 at 9:15 AM

There are too many comments to have read them all, so if this has already been said, I guess I’m saying it again.

A lot of Conservatives seem to believe that if Ann hadn’t made this comment, that the Dems would NOT have a letter going out talking about how hateful Conservatives are. That has been proven false so many times before. They would merely search for the next best quote they could find, attach it’s “hate” to all Conservatives and beg for money. That’s how the game is played.

I’m so sick of hearing how people are tired of dirty politics and smear tactics. That is EXACTLY what politics is in America. In other countries, they just assasinate their opponents. At least they are still alive here after the verbal carnage ceases. I love really good mudslinging. Bring it on!

TugboatPhil on March 4, 2007 at 9:30 AM

Coulter probably should have used a little discretion based on where she was at, but come on … the democrats feigning outrage based on some supposed moral superiority is ridiculous. Ann would have to stay on stage for 18 hours straight and insult everyone in the democratic party with every slur ever concocted to come anywhere close to the level of viciousness the democrats have achieved.

darwin on March 4, 2007 at 9:45 AM

I haven’t read ALL of the comments. But I am relieved to see that a great many are expressing the distaste that comes from throwing one of our own to wolves. The views tend toward three camps:

1. Ann’s remark was bad for everybody
2. Ann’s remark was bad, but what does it matter?
3. Ann’s remark was Ann’s remark; get over it.

I am in the third camp. Is John Edwards a homosexual? No. Then why should he be insulted about be called a faggot, and why should we care?

If he is a homosexual then he should be secure enough in his decision as all homosexuals should be. Mr. Preston and others in Camp 1 assume that homos are insulted or whose especially tender feelings are hurt. Who are they to make such assumptions? We have heard from one member of the homosexual community and his feelings are not hurt.

Mr. Preston and the rest of his Camp, feed the hulking PC beast with such human sacrifices. He is, however, a product of the liberal socialization machine into which his generation was fed. He cannot help himself.

I think we have more to fear from people like Mr. Preston than we do from people like Ann Coulter. We know where she stands. We don’t know where Camp 1 stands. They are programmed, like Manchurian Candidates, to react in a specific manner when their PC Button is pushed. Until then, they think, act and speak as though they are one of us.

Camp 1’s increased exposure has only excacerbated their conditioning. If they had any convictions towards conservatism, they were consciously exchanged for Fox News Contracts. I am sure they were thinking, “I have a higher purpose now” as they were being fitted with their PC Buttons.

netherman79 on March 4, 2007 at 9:47 AM

I’m still baffled by how people can say that Ann’s saying she can’t talk about Edwards because she can’t say “faggot” isn’t the same thing as calling him one.

You have to be searching for a way out for her if you come to that conclusion.

Benaiah on March 4, 2007 at 9:48 AM

Faggot. It is only a word and will be replaced by another word by another. On and on. Get over it. Knock off the double standards. Don’t like what Ann had to say, take it up with her and move on. This is wasted energy.

In my opinion it is much to do about nothing. Will this silliness change your vote?

Wade on March 4, 2007 at 10:04 AM

Bryan, Michelle

Politics has entered the serious stage, gone are the lightweight candidates like in Maryland and Virginia, gone are the gentle people who are going to debate civilized opposition who has supporters rioting in the streets and the net

Clue:

the opposition makes Huey Long look like a choirboy and they have delusions of grandeur.

Ann was just toughening up the room.

2008 nasty down and dirty - bring it on baby.

question are you on board? or we can continue this discussion in line getting our nationalized healthcare or filling up our “Greenmobiles” at the national oil company.

Big hint - you and Michelle are the first to go - you’ll be legislated right off the webpage if they have the golden three in 08.

I would have to disagree with you concerning Bryan et al.

The job they do isn’t easy and I can see from their perspective how Coulter’s remark would seemingly make it more difficult for them to call people like Maher for their over-the-top remarks. Plus, I do believe that Bryan would genuinely prefer a more civil political discourse on all fronts.

That said, I do disagree with Bryan that Coulter is the blame for her comment overshadowing events at CPAC. It isn’t the “mememememememe” that Bryan suggest. She is who she is. The people who invited her to speak knew full well of her penchant to say something inconvenient.

The reality is that Coulter can’t overshadow an event as Bryan suggest unless bloggers like Bryan et al provide the platform. The last time I checked, I don’t see where Coulter prevented Bryan or Michelle from telling us about the other events that happened. Coulter doesn’t have that kind of power unless folks like Bryan give it to her. (IMHO)

Then again, how many hits would HotAir lose if they ignored Coulter if they simply let her “wither on the vine”?

.

GT on March 4, 2007 at 10:34 AM

I’ve had enough. There’s a voice in this debate that I don’t think has been clearly represented, and is probably the opinion of exactly who Ann Coulter’s joke hurt the most. My heart aches when I see video of the epithet on the news, when I hear it on the radio, and when I see so many people treating eachother so viciously over petty squabbles that don’t address the real issue. Is the real problem that faggot is a hurtful term? No. Is the problem that people are overly sensitive? No. The problem is that you couldn’t make me care about this story if Mooninites were attached. We who don’t give a damn have held our tongue too long. Do not confuse our silence with apathy about our apathy. We’re here, we don’t care, get used to it!

John was singled out for a personal attack because the Republican establishment knows he poses the greatest threat to their power

That was a joke from the Edwards campaign, right? My Little Silke Pony isn’t even a fly speck on the republican establishment. He presents little, if any, threat. Hillary isn’t even seeing him as a threat in her bid for the Dem nomination.

Rush used to be just as misunderstood. Now that most of us get him, we need a new Rush. That’s Ann. Pretty soon more and more people will start rejecting PC behavior while not having to resort to what Ann has to do just to get the conservatives attention.

Oh, I think you’re mistaken. about that. Really.

Pablo on March 4, 2007 at 11:26 AM

Wow, what a contentious thread. But in the end, Bryan and Michelle are correct.

Bryan said:

We don’t lose for being less profane than the left; we usually lose for being less conservative than we promise we’ll be. If we start acting like the haters on the left that’ll just drag us all down and the rest of the country will rightly think that everyone who has any obvious political passion, regardless which side they happen to be on, is crazy as a loon.

I recommend reading George Washington’s “Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior”. We all need to do better at walking the walk; it’s just too easy to talk the talk. I promise to improve my behavior. Let’s not become a reflection of the left.

Whoopee. The NYT. And the google link? Most of the 149 repsonses were CPAC it self, not about what she said. I don’t mean to sound snide, but it helps to actually look over the responses.

Excellent point, well said.

Shortest distance from one point (and, the beauty of this is, it’s any point) to the conclusion that anyone not a RW is aiding, abetting and indeed, rooting for, the terrorists. BRAVO!!!!!

You are dead wrong. I’m one of the least PC conscious people you could ever meet. For instance, I refuse to acknowledge hyphenated Americanism. I just don’t use words like she did to describe people.

Benaiah on March 4, 2007 at 12:08 PM

Yea, I pointed this out a day and a couple hundred comments ago. Some people seem to love to wallow in a silly issue.

Help me out cause I’m not sure of the new rules. I listened to Michelle’s video where she said she was glad she didn’t bring her kids to CPAC and hear the word faggot. This was right before she called McCain, John Screw You McCain.

Is there a rule book of approved words and epithets for those of us with underdeveloped senses of outrage?

JackStraw on March 4, 2007 at 12:09 PM

What, the moonbats get hysterical over comments by the lovely Ann Coulter?

Get a grip on yourself, no biggie.

JackM on March 4, 2007 at 12:10 PM

Pablo on March 4, 2007 at 11:26 AM

The point is that the mentality of attacking Ann doesn’t help the conservative attempt to take the center back to a semblance of sanity. It has the opposite effect of supporting the insane liberal opinion that rights for terrorists and sex with little boys is just a little bit left of center. 25 years ago that was such an extreme position it was unthinkable. PCness is the culprit and attacking Ann for her percieved violation at the PC alter appears to be a fear of being call politically incorrect.

Only you know if you are reacting to PC. That is why I said it appears that you are.

Two things are factual.

2nd, you think she called him a faggot.

1st, You are looking at her comment in a vacuum because you haven’t considered her CPAC comment in context with her past comment that was linked.

The result appears to be a breech in your abhorance to PCness.

I don’t know MM’s mind, but perhaps not knowing Anns comments would have appeared to be offensive, she would have brought her kids. Whereas with MM’s comment she knows her kids wont hear them.

Wait a minute…”not knowing Anns comments would have appeared to be offensive”???

That didn’t make much sense did it?

Look, I give MM all the credit in the world because I respect her. This event isn’t going to diminish how I feel about her opinions, because she I believe is a moral person that needs to be part of the leaders in the moderate conservative movement. (Moderate in the old context, not the Rudy context) I just wish she could find a way to support the concept Ann was putting out there without helping the dems throw Ann under the bus.

er, which one?

Come on. Enough outrage already. Good people do use naughty words. Ann Coulter, who is not of my favorites, is a pundit, a comic of sorts, an over the top commentor on all things liberal. It’s not like Ghandi started preaching for violence. Anyone who is shocked that Ann Coulter said something controversial and inflamatory are either not in touch with reality or looking, hard, for something to bitch about. Let’s get back to watching the left debate whether or not Obama is black enough.

Here’s an idea, if you didn’t like what Ann said, don’t vote for her.
