Surprise: Students who heckled Ahmadinejad expelled, marked for military service

He publicly pledged at the time that none of them would be punished, to which one student replied thusly:

“That is only a slogan by him, it’s not true,” he said. “Whoever criticises him will have a hard time. They don’t do anything now, but rather they wait for a month or so, or even the next year, and when we want to enroll at university they won’t let us…”

Bingo. Not only are they out, but the university chancellor came bearing notices of eligibility for military service. Which is precisely what Ahmadinejad “joked” would happen while they were heckling him. The Guardian, December 18:

Witnesses say Mr Ahmadinejad also tried to ridicule the students by referring to the university disciplinary code, under which those with three penalty points are suspended from studies. “He joked that he was going to issue a presidential order for those with three stars to be enlisted as sergeants in the army. That made the students really angry,” said Mr Zamanian.

The lesson: when he tells you he’s going to do something, believe him.

Go read the Telegraph article linked at the top about the pride student dissidents take in having penalty points, or “stars,” assessed against them. Quote: “The star system has, however, become a badge of honour among those who have acquired them on their records. Students have likened it to the German Nazi-era practice of making Jews wear the Star of David, a comparison that acquired new relevance last week when Ahmadinejad aroused international disgust by hosting a conference in Teheran for people who deny the Holocaust.”

Regarding this topic, I’m going to have to paraphrase an old Code Pink favorite and say, “I support soldiers when they shoot their president.”

Savage on March 2, 2007 at 7:48 PM

wow.

I wish I had their guts, I’m ashamed to admit I don’t. I’m more the plotting in secret type anyway….

Max Power on March 2, 2007 at 7:49 PM

Oh, this sooooo reminds me of that oppressive police state established by Bushco and his cabal of neo-con henchmen.

Hey, Rosie… pull your head out of that, ummmmm… whatever you folks call them these days.

This is a picture of true intolerance and fascism. I hope Sean Spiccoli is paying attention too. Learn the difference, people. It’s very important.

SailorDave on March 2, 2007 at 7:51 PM

Where is that fea chick “AmeriKa” to talk about Iran being free….at least in 2008?

Tim Burton on March 2, 2007 at 7:55 PM

And this is who we’re going to have “talks” with. Evil empire, indeed.

spmat on March 2, 2007 at 7:57 PM

It sounds like more than a few students are weary of living in the 7th century… Ahmadinejad actions may have the opposite effect and encourage more dissidence…

Zorro on March 2, 2007 at 7:58 PM

And the “slighty dirty” collegiates will still be at your local Farmer’s Market handing out ‘literature’ on the oppressive BushCo.

Brave souls risking their lives for the good of their country. Liberals, take note–that is what “speaking truth to power” looks like, not all this candy-ass crap requiring absolutely zero personal risk that leftists always pat themselves on the back for.

I always took The DinerJacket seriously: that’s why I want him ‘topped’ as the Brits say. Pushing up daisies, achieving room temperature…..

If someone doesn’t kill or ‘forcibly retire’ him soon, he will start killing lotsa people, almost certainly starting with Isrealis.

Janos Hunyadi on March 2, 2007 at 8:18 PM

Huh – I wonder how other members of the military feel about military service being used as a punishment. Sergeants, no less. It makes me wonder about Iran’s enlisted men, it sounds like they aren’t held in very high regard. I can’t see them putting up much of a fight, if it came down to it, especially against US soldiers and Marines.

reaganaut on March 2, 2007 at 8:20 PM

Janos, if what I’ve seen Allah, et al, posting here contains a shred of truth, that member of the lollipop guild won’t be around too long.

I hate to point out the politically obvious, but one who is in a secure position as an idol of the unwashed doesn’t need to make examples of nameless students. We’re looking at Act III of a really tedious Shakespeare play.

SailorDave on March 2, 2007 at 8:25 PM

Wow I am heartned by these events. The Iranian students need back up. Lets send them a plane load of our university students, especially from Columbia.

Is this being covered anywhere in the MSM?

I don’t know Big Pink!

sonnyspats1 on March 2, 2007 at 9:04 PM

… and given plastic “Keys to Heaven”, no doubt.

Tony737 on March 2, 2007 at 9:05 PM

Maybe Mymood Iminajihad should have just quoted “other sources” regarding his students protests:

“What we don’t want is an event to take place where the safety and security of our students, faculty and staff can’t be ensured,”

Then send them to the Western Front…..

Richard III….

Janos Hunyadi on March 2, 2007 at 9:27 PM

I invite all the protestors claiming America is a fascist state to put down their signs, tune in to Iran, and get a good look at what a real fascist state looks like. Then sit back and consider that no matter how many laps you do around the White House yelling “Bushitler” that you will never be forcibly conscripted into the military nor even denied admittance to a state college.

Tantor on March 2, 2007 at 9:38 PM

The argument that if we take out Iran’s military and nuke sites will cause the people to turn on us has always bothered me. It didn’t make sense but maybe it’s true if the military is full of students who were punished.

Of course, if there are then we might be able to count on them deserting if given the chance.

Bill C on March 2, 2007 at 9:47 PM

Eh, what’s the big deal? So they’re in the military… it’s not like Iranian soldiers are doing any fighting or being in harm’s way right now. Oh wait, that Revolutionary Guard-in-Iraq thing. Well, at least the Iranians are planning on a real war anytime soon. Oh… yeah.

Poor damn kids. Got to wonder how many times this has happened before in Iran. Too damn bad the media isn’t as interested in that question…

ReubenJCogburn

Too true. They would break their own arms patting themselves on the back and offer their cast up for signing as proof of a brave war wound.
Personally,I probably would’nt last 24 hours in that reeking dumpster of a country before someone offed me for speaking my mind.
Lefties are delusional captains of their own sinking ship and are singing Fred Rogers neighborhood theme song on their way down.

spazzmomma on March 2, 2007 at 10:55 PM

Well, it’s better than the commies. They would’ve shot these guys in the head–then killed their families.

ARE YOU CRAZY?!! YOU THINK STUDENTS FROM A UNIVERSITY IN THE U.S. WOULD STAND BEHIND THESE DISSIDENTS? THINK AGAIN.

See, in Iran, if you work hard and study hard, you’ll succeed.
But if you don’t, and criticize the president, you’ll get stuck in Iraq

billy on March 3, 2007 at 12:09 AM

Bassackwards. Sheesh, I guess it might be me. I’m shocked.

R D on March 3, 2007 at 12:11 AM

Maybe this is what John Kerry was warning our students about if the DEMS take the White House in 08? “Study hard and keep your mouths shut or you’ll end up in Iraq” might have just been what he meant.

I wish we could get the libs to understand that, AP. Wanna know what 1938 was like? Look around. I don’t think western civ is going to survive this one. It’s been going on since 500 bc, maybe it’s time for China’s turn.

PRCalDude on March 3, 2007 at 1:24 AM

Is anybody really surprised at this turn of events in Iran? I’m not.

And ReubenJCogburn, you are exactly right — this is a true example of “truth to power.” The left in America is simply lying when they self-righteously thump their chests with this self-described accolade.

georgej on March 3, 2007 at 3:15 AM

Criticize the government, get drafted.

Maybe the US could learn something from other countries.

Hay, guys, what’s up? Me? Not much. Michael Jackson converted to Islam, by the way.

Savage on March 3, 2007 at 11:14 AM

Where the hell did these students think they were- Columbia? Berkeley? Georgetown?

A little weapons training for dissidents could be a good thing, in the long run.

And those dinky silhouette targets look a lot like Ahmadinejad…
