Video: Christina Aguilera salutes the troops, skanky retro style

posted at 1:12 pm on February 28, 2007 by Allahpundit

They showed Abbott & Costello movies on local TV every Saturday afternoon when I was a kid so I recognized the song this is based on instantly. It’s called “Candyman” and See-Dub digs it, but the lines about making her “panties drop” and her “cherry pop” and getting it while it’s hot in an Andrews Sisters homage is a bit much for my taste. Then again, I’m a moron who snickers at crap like this.

Nice vid, liked it

For pop music I thought it was relatively clean. I thought this was a move toward cleanliness rather than the usual.

Hey, it’s less “bawdy” than the stupid Honky Tonk Badonka Donk,

Country is probing for that whorish niche suddenly, God help us.

Free Constitution on February 28, 2007 at 8:53 PM

It’d be like rewriting “I’m in the Mood for Love” as “I’m in the Mood for Anal.”

Now that’s funny. I think you’re trying to hard to not like it though. I loved it for the brass sound, if nothing else. Lyrics were a bit risque but come on, compared to….everything else that’s out there? It’s tame. The other tarts are probably making fun of her for wearing something under her skirt. No, I liked the sound, I loved the visuals; the airplane art motif was very clever. Finally, some good retro. There’s a lot to be said for the 40′s. People drank a lot more and talked a lot less. There was no such word as metrosexual. Howard Dean would be in a straight jacket somewhere safe (for the rest of us.) Bravo to Christina A.

austinnelly on February 28, 2007 at 8:56 PM

#1 Christina wins a prize for using a horn section in modern pop. Quite possibly the least utilized instrument section outside of a full orchestra.

#2 Christina made a video that involved men in military uniform that didn’t insult the troops or take a cheapshot at Iraq.

#3 Christina was hot. and she took the sluttyness right to the limit before it become a turnoff.

#4 I actually enjoyed her voice in this video. a huge suprise.

Therefore: I Approve.

True. This only shows how bad things have gotten.

As my baby girl grows up, I get to explain to her what all these lyrics mean. Sigh.

The mere mention of the title ‘candy man’ has me first thinking about the horror icon. Say his name 3X into a mirror…

It made me think of the song by Aqua, called Candy Man. Lame euro techno pop, but fun to listen to at 80 mph. I also thought Southparks takeoff with Biggie Smalls on the whole Candy man bit was hilarious.

Rita Hayworth’s pinup WAS racey for it’s day.

This is allllll relative.

I don’t think the phrase ‘hung like a harvest mouse’ will be catching on any time soon.

Don’t be so sure Dr. Mousecaulk. I think this will be the new catch-phrase at Ace’s place.

The Atom Bomb of Loving Kindness.

TABoLK on February 28, 2007 at 10:47 PM

BTW, a MUCH better use of Naval uniform items than that horrific Cher video.

TABoLK on February 28, 2007 at 10:54 PM

I liked it! (like anyone would be surprised)

I actually think we should talk the Iraqi Government into airing this video, and see what effect it has on the terrorist?

At least while they are watching, it will give time for our boys to sneak up on them, and while they are standing in a pool of their own drool with their jaws on the ground……. last thing the hear “Makes my cherry pop…” pop pop popopopopopopopop!”

As for:

It’d be like rewriting “I’m in the Mood for Love” as “I’m in the Mood for Anal.”

I’m half surprised she didn’t show the GIs wearing nametags like “Ben Dover” and “Buster Hymen.”

There’s something extremely sexy about a woman who doesn’t give it all away right up front – like this one does. Some tease can go a long, long way. Christina Aguilera gives it all away – right up front. The song has a great beat playing off an older tune, but let’s face it: the older tune was much, much sexier.

thedecider on February 28, 2007 at 11:56 PM

“Oh, and BTW, her hand salute is better than 99.99999999% of what “Method Actors” ever manage.

Stephen M on February 28, 2007 at 5:51 PM”

I noticed that, too. Tommy Lee Jones and and Samuel L. Jackson are both excellent actors, but they do a two and a half hour movie as Marines and can’t get the “cups” out of their hands when they salute. But here, CA does a four-minute throw away pop music vid sampling a Marine cadence and her “present arms” is picture perfect?

Kadnine on March 1, 2007 at 12:21 AM

I thought it was a great song and video. As for the dropping panties etc…, so what? These days bands are virtually required to have an anti-war song on their cd’s, so doing a video that’s positive towards the military takes a lot of guts and she should be applauded for it. I mentioned this over at the Jawa’s place the other day and like i said there, i may be reading too much into this, but her last video featured an elephant playing a positive integral role in it, and now she does a positive video featuring the military. Maybe she’s a Republican, but doesn’t want to say for fear of getting blacklisted by the entertainment community. Even if she’s not, this is a good video.

forged rite on March 1, 2007 at 12:27 AM

Um..this came up the other day when a friend played this song for me. She was very disappointed in my reaction..

First mention of cherry poppin’ and such and I was already out of the room.

I love 40s style big band, and own quite a bit of it, myself…but as Allah pointed out, the lyrics are FAAAAAAR from appropriate to the style. If you’re gonna use the genre, do it properly. I mean, BEWITCHED, BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED is about as close to this porno nonsense as they got in the 40s in mainstream music, when Ella belted out, “horozontally speaking, he’s at his very best”.

I will note that I give this girl credit for her voice. She has one, and it’s good. Tho’ I detest her usual style of vocals – when she takes one note and makes it 15, it drives me to distraction. But then, I’m an industrial techno gal. Give me Ladytron or Garbage or Evanescence over “15-notes-for-one” Chrissie any day.

Rant over… Just sayin’

Maybe she’s a Libertarian who realised that the Democrats haven’t fought for liberty and justice for all.

I consider myself a Libertarian-Republican. Pro Gun Ownership, Pro-Adult Content for Adults, Pro-Death Penalty, Pro-efficiency (Not quite the same as being pro-environment… it’s more about self-preservation and a desire to spend less money.)

Neutral on Gay Marriage, Neutral on Abortion (But anyone that is Pro choice MUST be Pro-death penalty unless they are a total hypocrite. If someone believes that human babies may be eliminated for the sake of convenience, then the necessity of eliminating murderers/rapists is clearly a superior reason to end a life.)

Anti-child abuse, anti-drugs (Stupid Libertarian party. Drugs are just another way for your enemies to oppress your mind) Anti-Taxation, etc.

If Someone believes in freedom, and they actually look what the two major parties intend… and they understand what those intentions mean for freedom…

(for example: The Democrats’ nanny state.)

How could you not be pro-republican right now?

Jones Zemkophill on March 1, 2007 at 1:12 AM

Time for you to get a subscription to Billboard to keep up.

Debbie Schlussel on February 28, 2007 at 7:08 PM

Hi, Debbie, I wear my “Don’t Know What the Hell is Going on in Pop Music – And Don’t Care” badge proudly.

Don’t chide Allah for being unfamilliar with this stuff. I’ve not listened to Music radio for years, and don’t miss it one iota – ’cause it’s mostly crap. Case in point..a song including the phrase “makes my cherry pop” as a serious lyric.

Again…just sayin’.

tickleddragon on March 1, 2007 at 1:17 AM

This does rock, massively.

But it’s hard to forgive her for the perverted “Beautiful” video some years back, which had to be the most depraved thing ever peddled to America’s youth, ever.

Halley on March 1, 2007 at 1:26 AM

As a metalhead, I wouldn’t normally be caught dead listening to Christina Aguilera, but I LOVED this song. And I loved ALL the retro looks in the video. She did a great job replicating some of the best nose art. Yeah, I LOVED it.

BTW, did you guys notice she replicated the famous Rosie the Riveter poster from WWII? Plus some of the other stuff you guys already mentioned…she was definitely sending a pro-victory message throughout the entire video.

And best yet, she gave our boys something REAL nice to look at. Talk about eye candy. I’m a chick, but I can appreciate hot when I see it. Besides, have you ever seen the troops go crazy over a pretty female while deployed? It’s fun, it’s hilarious, it’s normal, and it’s hornier than hell. Who cares? That’s life in uniform. I’d be worried if our men were a bunch of emasculated pansies. As for the whole panty-dropping line – I can see that getting hoots and hollers from guys in uniform. A little bit of naughty fun.
I’d love to see more retro stuff like this.

As for naked Sundays – my husband would think he’d died and gone to heaven. We used to do have fun like that before kids – and somehow I just don’t think it will be AS fun when we’re 50 and the kids are finally out of the house. ;P So, hooray for Naked Sundays when you’re young and…taut!

Redhead Infidel on March 1, 2007 at 1:35 AM

The Soldiers loved the act and don’t remember the lyrics…

Female(s) rodents are very promiscuous, therefore sexual competition is fierce between males trying to fertilize eggs, he said.

Thank you all for this thread and comments. What an endorphin-producer! Only on HOTAiR!

csdeven on March 1, 2007 at 7:33 AM

I’m a somewhat trained vocalist-my “signature” song is Peggy Lee’s ‘Fever’”-who married into a family of professional instrumentalists.
I have ALWAYS taken the attitude that if a singer has to throw either:
a. profanity
b. overt sexual messages
c.or dresses like a hooker

Then they obviously have nothing to say.
I’m no prude-Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” is one hot song-and yes, CA can sing.
So what.

Peggy Lee and Rosemary Clooney didn’t dress trashy or have a lot of over T & A in their songs-yet their voices still managed to give many a guy a wet dream.
Maybe CA and her talented ilk could learn from them.

annoyinglittletwerp on March 1, 2007 at 8:22 AM

Anyone who thinks the video is skanky and not of the WW2 era needs to look up the Varga girl pinup posters and bomber nose art.

Faith1 on March 1, 2007 at 8:40 AM

It was pretty tame as far as her stuff goes… but i’d have a slight problem with my pre teen and teenage daughters singing it. You know.. the people who listen to her the most.

Maybe the kids will sing it for the grandparents when they come over.

GoodBoy on March 1, 2007 at 8:44 AM

Yes, I agree, CA has the pipes and she’s hot. The video is very sexy, BUT–you can’t compare the double entendre music from the 40′s and 50′s to mainstream slut today. Yes, sexuality has always been around in music–ESPECIALLY the blues, but those tunes were never mainstream. AND there were no videos to go with them. I have a cd called (I believe) “Red, Hot and Risque” of some downright filthy blues recordings from the 40′s thru the 60′s, but they were all obscure.

Still, I did enjoy the video, but she could have done without the panties and cherries.

robblefarian on March 1, 2007 at 9:20 AM

Nora Jones has a beautiful voice, but unfortunately-she’s a moonbat.

WriterMom on March 1, 2007 at 10:05 AM

I thought it was really cute. So she’s skanky. Big deal. I’d rather see a video with a military motif than hear her whine about how “You are beautiful, no matter what..” with some pretty fugly people on screen. I’d keep this one of the kid’s MP3 becase of the lyrics, though. And she does have a fanastic voice and body.

WriterMom on March 1, 2007 at 10:10 AM

Too lively! Hahahahahaha. I just read that story on LGF.

WriterMom on March 1, 2007 at 10:13 AM

WTF is up with the link to animal porn?

Timber Wolf on March 1, 2007 at 10:13 AM

You will know it is popular when the Drag Queen “acts” start doing the song in their acts. And compared to some of the hip-hop & rap video’s on BTV/MTV, this was mild.

If you like it, record and save it. If you don’t like it, forget it, and the is the beauty of living in America.

Wuptdo on March 1, 2007 at 10:20 AM

So as an homage to the 40’s, it’s a little raw. As a piece of naughty pro-military cotton candy, though, it’s pretty unusual and pretty good.

I was wondering what to say then Bam…CW hits it on the head.

I too, liked it.

Ah, yes, love to see those conservative values of “cherry poppin’ and panty droppin’” defended for the sole reason that at least it’s not bashing the military. Is this what it’s come down to? Good grief.

Drum on March 1, 2007 at 11:31 AM

Sorry, but I htink all of you missed the point. The style is retro. It’s not an homage to the troops. (Fortunately, it’s not a denigration of them either.) The retro look is just another style, another visual theme in the artists repetoir to exploit.

As far as the video, it’s actually pretty unremarkable. Good voice. Check. Dressing, singing, and acting like a slut. Check. Over-editing in the video. Check. Expand her fan base to re-include righties who were appalled by her “Beautiful” song/video. Check. Deposit production studio’s check. Check. etc.

urbancenturion on March 1, 2007 at 12:08 PM

the lines about making her “panties drop” and her “cherry pop” and getting it while it’s hot in an Andrews Sisters homage is a bit much for my taste.

In my mind the cherry pop reference can’t be what you think. She must be talking about that gum that squirts when you bite it or something. Does anyone acknowledge the remotest possibility that she is a virgin? Puleeze.

smellthecoffee on March 1, 2007 at 12:25 PM

For all yer whining about this singers morals, have any of you complainers actually corresponded or spoke with some of our young sons wearing the uniform on enemy turf recently? The number one request from the single fellas is porn. #2 is alcohol. They ain’t shy asking asking for it either. This video is easy to share and I’m sure these young men (and women) will find it entertaining as well.

Great post. I am a Libertarian also. I agree with you.

Did you notice the huge neon American Flag Christina used as her back drop in her performance in LONDON?

Now that’s an anti-Dixie Chick. Love it. She’s an American and proud of it and not afraid to show it to the Brits. Love it or leave it.

Professor Blather on March 1, 2007 at 3:02 PM

I did not like this!

She screams too much, and she did not perform that in style with the music, and, as a result, her style did not work with that tune.

She did not show any feel for jazz, swing, or rockabilly, none of them.

She is out of her league in this one. All shee seems to do is scream, and yell, and dress like a slutty whore.

Now, I must go call HAZMAT and get myself, my computer, and my home and family decontaminated and quarantined!
