Video: Model F-14 porn!

Not only is this stupid, a quickie Google search reveals it’s almost two years old. Even Ace won’t post crap that ancient.

No matter. It showed up at FLURL today and it’s awesome, although I concede it would be considerably less awesome without the soundtrack.

If they made the cockpit about 10% bigger, they could fit Tom Cruise in there.

Update: Replaced the annoying auto-start FLURL clip with the YouTube version.

One of their tailfins was a bit out of alignment … if you don’t look closely it looks like an -18.

Talk to me Goose!

budorob on February 24, 2007 at 2:55 PM

see-dub, you bogey.

Anwyn on February 24, 2007 at 2:55 PM

the 10 seconds you actually see it in flight are awesome. What’s up with that? A long run up for nothing?

lorien1973 on February 24, 2007 at 3:17 PM

very cool plane

very crappy vid

SilverStar830 on February 24, 2007 at 3:30 PM

I always wanted to see an F-14 in flight, and now its retired. What a beautiful bird.

infidel on February 24, 2007 at 3:34 PM

In the air, yes. On the ground it looks surprisingly clunky, like it’s weighted down in the belly and tail and would take more work than it’s worth to get off the ground.

Anwyn on February 24, 2007 at 3:49 PM

So do we get to see video of AQ shooting this thing down in a couple of weeks?

rw on February 24, 2007 at 3:52 PM

Pretty good jet pornism. Checking around, it looks like that’s about a $20,000 rush. But for an even, literally, bigger dose, check out this page. Scroll down to the jet turbine, radio-controlled B-52 with a 20-foot wingspan. There are 2 pics: 1 porn, 1…uh…pwn3d. That’s a lotta $$$$$$.

eeyore on February 24, 2007 at 3:55 PM

$20k? You’d think actually flying a plane would be a better rush for far less $$. Maybe they have physical factors that won’t let them fly…

More technology than the Somalian Air force!

If you’re going for old flying videos, how about some flying lawnmower?

I used to own a hobby store in town, and these planes are expensive. You’d just about have to insure them. lol

Back in the early 90s, when I owned the place, they ran about $5000 for just a basic ducted fan airplane, so yeah, this very well may have cost them $20 grand.

I’m guessing they have a LOT more than that invested, though, because these planes aren’t easy to learn how to fly (they are FAST), so I imagine they had more than one crash to recover from. Spare parts and replacements alone could run them several thousands of dollars.

Iowa Voice on February 24, 2007 at 6:41 PM

I should have added that a majority of the accidents flyers have is on landing. You can imagine what would happen to this model if the guy at the controls screwed up as it came in for a landing, especially at that speed.

Iowa Voice on February 24, 2007 at 6:47 PM

An example of the kind of crashes I’m talking about:

Here

And he crashed in the grass. Imagine hitting pavement.

Iowa Voice on February 24, 2007 at 6:50 PM

I know a guy who built a ducted F4 Phantom from scratch. No big deal for him….he worked in palmdale on the B2. He had a crusader that was pretty cool.

csdeven on February 24, 2007 at 9:08 PM

Too bad this is on U Tube. We’ll see this video again soon with some rag head yelling allah akbar pretending to shoot it down. A dead GI Joe will roll our of the burning toy cockpit and CNN will say, “see, we told ya so. War’s a complete loss”.

I dunno….we can keep an eye on CNN though.

91Veteran on February 24, 2007 at 11:19 PM

So that’s where they’ve been hiding G.I. Joe’s secret spy plane! D’OH!

robblefarian on February 24, 2007 at 11:25 PM

rw and warlaw, that’s what I was thinkin’ too.

G.I. doll … um … ACTION FIGURE held “hostage”.

Next, model F-14’s being “shot down” a year after the Tomcats were officially retired.

God I love this country! We *retire* fighter planes that other countries can’t even START to build!

Tony737 on February 25, 2007 at 12:52 AM

the thought occurred to me that if they lost signal for even a few milliseconds, the jet could travel far enoguh to be out of range.

That’s some cool stuff.

benrand on February 25, 2007 at 9:24 AM

Neat, real mini-turbines instead of ducted fan engines.

I saw a model B-52 with actual mini turbine engines (8 of em). Wow.
