Video: Round mound of rebound endorses Obama

Early endorsements flying fast and furious today, including one that Tanya called to my attention. Is this news?

Rev. Jesse Jackson said his stopping by Obama’s fundraiser was, “quite coincidental” and that he was in L.A. working on some trade and education issues. As for Obama, “Barack has my vote. He’s from Illinois.” He also described former Sen. John Edwards as, “a sleeper.”

He all but endorsed him last month, but so far as I know this is the first time he’s explicitly said he won’t be voting for the other reverend.

As for Barkley, yeah, he’s re-branded. Last summer, in fact:

“He’s right,” Charles Barkley said of Mellencamp. “The word conservative means discriminatory practically. It’s a form of political discrimination. What do the Republicans run on? Against gay marriage and for a war that makes no sense. A war that was based on faulty intelligence. That’s all they ever talk about. That and immigration. Another discriminatory argument for political gain.”…

“I was a Republican until they lost their minds,” Barkley said.

Here he is on “The Situation Room” tonight lying to Blitzer’s face about never having identified as Republican and showing off some of his newfound nuance with an argument about what it’ll mean if neither Hillary nor Obama becomes president. Exit question: Given that Democrats will have to choose one or the other, should we draw the same conclusions about them based on their choice?

Note: the clip has been edited for brevity.

Wow, now that the coveted “Barkley Endorsement” is settled, I have to wonder, who is Paris Hilton endorsing?

reaganaut on February 21, 2007 at 8:47 PM

…..and they laughed and scoffed when I said that he was not actually a Republican or actually a conservative……

Janos Hunyadi on February 21, 2007 at 8:52 PM

TRUE COLORS ?? MEANING ??

bones47 on February 21, 2007 at 8:53 PM

Nice stab, reaganaut.

Sir Charles does, of course, have absolute moral authority since he rejects the “role model” label. That, celeb status, and the other obvious points in his favor, and there’s no arguing with him if you don’t want to be called a Nazi.

::yawn::

Freelancer on February 21, 2007 at 8:54 PM

Sir Charles is a moron.

EnochCain on February 21, 2007 at 8:58 PM

I saw this interview, which was one of the most incoherent, idiotic things I’ve seen in ages (or the last few days). You know it’s bad when one hopes Jack Cafferty comes back from vacation…

jaleach on February 21, 2007 at 9:02 PM

Well, I am a Celtics fan (well, was, back when the NBA was good), so do I have any moral authority because he once played for the 76ers?

Wait – 76ers is too long to say, it’s just Sixers these days, right? Wouldn’t want anyone to be reminded what happened in 1776 now, either.

Who is Bill Lambier endorsing?

reaganaut on February 21, 2007 at 9:04 PM

They should’ve brought in ESPN’s NBA commentator Greg Anthony, a black conservative Republican, to counter Sir Charles BS, but yet again this is CNN.

BJ on February 21, 2007 at 9:11 PM

I’d like to know whom Joe Lieberman will endorse.

Entelechy on February 21, 2007 at 9:12 PM

“I was a Republican until they lost their minds,” Barkley said.

“I was a Republican Conservative until they I lost their my mind,”

There; Fixed it to reflect reality.

LegendHasIt on February 21, 2007 at 9:12 PM

he was a stupid republican and he’ll be a stupid democrat. i remember him talking back in the day about the death penalty, saying something to the effect of, “i’m not just for the death penalty, i’d have, like, death week…” and some absurd bs about broadcasting executions.

jummy on February 21, 2007 at 9:13 PM

Sir Charles, modern Liberalism is bigotry.

jp on February 21, 2007 at 9:14 PM

Does this mean they are going to put Obama on the Wheaties box?

Limerick on February 21, 2007 at 9:16 PM

Sometimes when I pray, I ask for a Judge Janice Rogers Brown nomination to the Supreme Court.

I would then like to see Sir Charles and other liberal bigots reaction to her opinion of modern liberalism being slavery.

jp on February 21, 2007 at 9:16 PM

Chuckles the Clown. Considering this buffoon has blown 10 XL gambling, The Prophet better hope he isn’t taking bets.

JammieWearingFool on February 21, 2007 at 9:19 PM

But what about Britney’s endorsement? It has to count for something, since she’s been to rehab… twice! Or is it 3 times now?

Wake me up in September, 2008 when this is for real.

Scotsman on February 21, 2007 at 9:23 PM

The real Sir Charles

BJ on February 21, 2007 at 9:28 PM

The Round Mound is now Beclowned.

Barkley is NOT an endorser role model!

SouthernGent on February 21, 2007 at 9:46 PM

“He’s right,” Charles Barkley said of Mellencamp. “The word conservative means discriminatory practically. It’s a form of political discrimination.

I sat with him as he lost $800,000.00 in one night 3 years ago. He might tell you the truth about gambling, but he wont about the ‘discrimination thing’, unless he’s had a few.
He don’t like whites. Period.

shooter on February 21, 2007 at 10:03 PM

Well, it was bound to come out eventually…

The Democrats MUST choose Obama. Especially if they determine he can NOT win. Should they not choose the “black man”, it would look bad for them. Of course they would get a pass if they reject him – so no real consequences there.

However, choosing him over Hillary et al, should he go on to lose the election, it would be more cause to claim America is racist, islamophobic, anti-poor, etc.

As a black man, I can say – he seems a poor choice at this point. However, Republicans are hardly trying, and do not seem to recognize Liberals’ hatred for America.

They will do anything to dishonor America, and another black casualty is par for the course.

Agrippa2k on February 21, 2007 at 10:05 PM

“I was a Republican until they lost their minds,” Barkley said.

I wonder what issues he endorsed when he was a Republican. Overeating, underperforming, being an overpaid non-role model, and shooting his mouth off aren’t the core beliefs of the Republican party. Maybe when he found that out, he switched parties.

Captain Louis Renault: “I am shocked, shocked, I tell you! Gambling in this establishment……..

Waiter: “Here are your winnings sir…”

Captain Louis Renault: “Oh, thank you……. Close this establishment at once!”

Maj. Heinrich Strasser Charles Barkley: “Round up the usual suspects Repulicans, they’re all racist, you know………”

PinkyBigglesworth on February 21, 2007 at 10:15 PM

“I was a Republican until they lost their minds,” Barkley said.

What he means, is that it isn’t fashionable anymore, so he’s a democrat. He turned republican in 1994, I think when the R’s took the house/senate. Now that its the other way around, he’s back to a D.

-or-

He has a point. The R’s have lost their mind. Gingrich’s revolution lasted 12 years. We need him back.

lorien1973 on February 21, 2007 at 10:37 PM

Why was Barkley even on the show in the first place?

starflyer on February 21, 2007 at 11:02 PM

Charles sounds like an idiot when he speaks of basketball. As for politics? Bottle it and sell it as a sleep aid.

reaganaut on February 21, 2007 at 9:04 PM

I’m holding out for Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan as soon as they’re out of rehab.

Ya beat me to it…

91Veteran on February 22, 2007 at 12:29 AM

The only smart thing I’ve heard him say was recently, when he was broadcasting a game on TNT along with Marv Albert (I think – for some reason, TNT had him broadcasting some games), and, oddly enough, the November ‘06 elections came up. He said that the Dems didn’t win the election – that the Republicans lost it. He thought that the Dems didn’t have a plan, but the Republicans were tripping all over themselves, so they lost.

I happen to agree with that – the Republicans beat themselves last election.

Rick on February 22, 2007 at 12:38 AM

Man, NBA on TNT is some of my favorite stuff to watch. Barkley can be pretty funny and entertaining (though not necessarily accurate or even close). And politically? An absolute incorehent moron, unfortunately. I do wish he kept politics out of the SPORTS show, though he occasionally brings it in.

On another note: BJ, how do you know Greg Anthony is a conservative? I cannot stand his basketball commentary (i.e. his hatred for my team, the Utah Jazz), but if he is really a conservative he goes waaaay up in my book. Please show evidence of this claim, please.

Patriot33 on February 22, 2007 at 12:41 AM

Anthony is a Republican, and a smart one too.

Rick on February 22, 2007 at 1:10 AM

I suspect that Barkley is endorsing simply because B. Hussein Osama, er, Obama is black.

georgej on February 22, 2007 at 1:27 AM

Thanks for info, I didn’t know that. I guess that Laker kool-aid and Jazz-bashing will be a little easier to swallow now. :)

Patriot33 on February 22, 2007 at 1:53 AM

But wait–isn’t he Obama’s Dad?

(I don’t like the guy or his politics, but that commercial is funny.)

ReubenJCogburn on February 22, 2007 at 2:44 AM

I could not focus on what Bark was saying. I am still stuck on the headline.

iNeXuS on February 22, 2007 at 3:25 AM

Charles is always good for a well thought out point. ha-ha

jdsmith0021 on February 22, 2007 at 8:01 AM

Endorsing a liberal democrat. Does that make him craaaaaazeeee? Bless his soul. ha ha ha!

roninacreage on February 22, 2007 at 8:38 AM

*sigh* Why do all of my old schoolgirl crushes keep doing this?

I think I’m just going to assume he had a stroke or an aneurysm or something, and this schism is physiological. He’s talking and acting a little weird. That could be a stroke, right?

Tanya on February 22, 2007 at 11:06 AM

Isn’t Charles Barkley the guy that once said that he wasn’t a role model, that people shouldn’t listen to him because his opinion isn’t any more valuable than anyone elses? Well, maybe he didn’t say that last part, maybe that was just what I got out of it.

Anyway, if he said that, then why does he feel so compelled to tell us all his new opinions?

Wolfman on February 22, 2007 at 11:10 AM

*sigh* Why do all of my old schoolgirl crushes keep doing this?

You had a thing for Sir Charles?

Allahpundit on February 22, 2007 at 11:10 AM

Yeah, I had a big crush on him when he was with the Suns. Talented, funny, cute, and conservative. What wasn’t to like?

*whine*

Tanya on February 22, 2007 at 11:22 AM

YAWN…who cares…???…why would anything a fat guy… with that golf swing… says be important…???

areseaoh on February 22, 2007 at 11:49 AM

Right back atcha’, Chuck:

I was a Republican Democrat until they lost their minds.

I’ve since, of course, seen the errors of my youth and made the proper corrections.

yo on February 22, 2007 at 12:34 PM

I say “go Obama!” If by some miracle this guy can beat Hillary from the Dem nomination, we win.

But I don’t see it happening. It’s like watching a teddy bear sitting in front of a junkyard pit bull.

It’s just a matter of time.

Rightwingsparkle on February 22, 2007 at 2:04 PM

Sheeshk, I’m tempted to neglect the educated side of my brain and use some foul language at this point. How do these dolts even get air time?

Some people are like leaves of grass, they only have the moral fortitude or any direction that an ‘indiscriminate’ wind gives them.
