Uh oh: Another chlorine-gas bomb detonated in Iraq

posted at 9:44 am on February 20, 2007 by Allahpundit

Remember last month when they found a tank of the stuff in a truck bomb in Ramadi? There were no casualties from the gas in that attack, but the victims this morning weren’t so lucky:

A cloud of deadly toxic gas engulfed an Iraqi town Tuesday, killing six people and leaving dozens of others choking on fumes after a tanker carrying chlorine exploded outside a restaurant.

An Iraqi Interior Ministry officials said the blast in the town of Taji, 12 miles (20 km) north of Baghdad, was caused by a bomb on board the tanker.

There were contrasting figures on the casualty toll. Baghdad security plan spokesman Gen. Qassim Atta told state-run al-Iraqiya TV that five people died in the blast and 148 were poisoned by the gas.

AQ in Iraq under Zarqawi reportedly planned a gas attack on Jordan that could have killed 20,000 people. Exit question: Are WMDs on tap for the countersurge?

Update: Reuters:

It was not immediately clear if the chlorine truck blast was caused by a roadside bomb that hit the truck or if the vehicle itself was rigged with explosives as a makeshift chemical gas bomb.

One source at police headquarters said the truck was rigged with explosives, suggesting it was a “dirty bomb” employing a readily available substance used to purify water.

Only a vicious, ten-fold response will prevent another attack. Whether we have the balls to do that is another story.

darwin on February 20, 2007 at 10:00 AM

What scares me and is causing me a lot of lost sleep is that the Islamofascists are using Baghdad as a testing ground for attacks being planned here. They certainly have to feel emboldened and no doubt using Spain as an example of what can be accomplished. They certainly have turned the attitude in this country into one of appeasment and cowardice and are now poised to deliver the coup-d-etat.
And while an attack of this type causes insomina wondering just what will be reaction of our citizens when it does happen is cause for distress.

WMD are the only way a small group can overwhelm a larger one. Therefore, the enemy will use WMD if they can get them, guaranteed.

naliaka on February 20, 2007 at 10:06 AM

I wonder are all thses new attacks outside of Baghdad signs of the insurgents being pushed out of the city?

Theworldisnotenough on February 20, 2007 at 10:06 AM

Quick….point me to a news report of Islamic protesters condemning the ‘insurgents’ who gassed their own people.

Limerick on February 20, 2007 at 10:13 AM

Terrorists strike targets of oppurtunity. It does not matter where you push them they will attack. Remember you are talking about an enemy who relishes death and while they do not have the balls to confront any organized force sent to deal with them they will strap explosives to themselves and walk into and among civillians and blow themselves to kingdom come. Civillized minds cannnot make the distinction between dying in battle against your enemy and dying by suicide killing innocents. In both cases the result is the same. They are dead.
I do not think you can reform a culture which values death more then life. The best we can do at this time is confine the killing to sectarianian violence amongst themselves and anytime they step out of the sand box slap them down and put them back. so Hamas have it with Fatah, Sunni kill Shiite, Hezbollah kill anyone who crosses your gun sight in Lebanon, but keep it in your yard because if you step out of that flea infested kitty litter box called the Middle East somebody needs to stamp a return to sender on your forehead and send you back. The only thing I want to hear about Islam is how it became extinct.

LakeRuins on February 20, 2007 at 10:18 AM

Story must be false.

Because obviously there are no WMDs in Iraq. Didn’t you get the memo?

Professor Blather on February 20, 2007 at 10:18 AM

The jihadis have nothing to lose at this point. They’ve already spent a couple of years bombing innocent civilians, and they’ve watched as the world pins the blame on Bush. They’ve cut off people’s heads on video, and the world pins the blame on Bush. So what’s a little chlorine gas attack? Everything is Bush’s fault.

Being a jihadi must be great. It must be nice to know that the moral culpability for any atrocity you commit redounds to your enemy. Think about all the horrible things you could do if you knew in your heart that God approved of your actions and that the world would locate the blame on the person you’re trying to hurt the most. It’s a charmed life, I’m sure.

Not to be too much of a chicken little, but that was the first thing I thought of.
2″ of snow crippled Chicago a couple weeks ago. First think what this would do.Then think how easy it would be…
It’s almost farm season around here. Fields will be turned over in a month or so and the meth freaks have been stealing tanks of anhydrous ammonia for so long, so often, that it doesn’t enven make the A section of the Trib, let alone the front page….

Waiting for international outrage at terrorist use of chemical weapons against civilians. Waiting…waiting…waiting…
I guess they will get to this as soon as they are done with their Gitmo outrage. Waiting…waiting…waiting…

BohicaTwentyTwo on February 20, 2007 at 10:22 AM

A chlorine gas bomb is easy to make. Some of us have done it in HS chemistry class, it was an accident honest. If you got a swimming pool or a Wal Mart with pool supplies you are in business. You don’t even need little things like blasting caps, det cord or time fuse or really any kind of complicated triggering device.

LakeRuins on February 20, 2007 at 10:25 AM

On what? On whom? Think before you type.

I was under the presumption that no counter attack would take place before they knew what or whom. I guess you’re not.

Considering our involvement in reconstruction efforts, we probably had a hand in providing those chemicals. I am reluctant to state the obvious, but we obviously have a security problem.

LakeRuins on February 20, 2007 at 10:18 AM

No, they don’t even have the courage to strap the bomb on themselves – instead they find some poor deluded cannonfodder or downs-syndrome child to do it for them.

Civilization has to stop this and stop it dead. No ‘talks’, nor comromise, no worrying about weather they are kept in an air conditioned room or their korans are handled with gloves.

People who do this must be killed with extreme predjudice. Their supporters should be (at least) imprisoned for life or flat out executed.

Civilization needs to put a stop to this shit right now and with overwhelming force. Even in wartime, even during a ‘insurgency’ this needs to be made totally unacceptable.

Or there may not be a civilization much longer (which is, of course, the Islamic dream….)

The problem, Spmat, is that liberals have gone so far over the edge, that no matter how hyperbolic you try to sound when you’re being ironic … people are still going to mistakenly think you’re serious.

After all – nothing you wrote above is really all that much different from what you’d see written completely seriously over at Kos or DU.

Liberals have killed irony. By becoming poster children for self-parody, they’ve taken all the fun out of parodying them.

Not crazy at all. This is exactly what needs to happen. How can the civilized world be so obtuse? Is it that they never hear the truth, the whole story? Our very own MSM hates Bush sooooo much that they’ve deceived the entire planet?

There is no other logical explanation. Hold someone responsible for these deaths. Start with the Slimes and the terrorists and keep going.
Does anyone have enough money to start a massive TV network which broadcasts nothing but reality, no PC, no spin, just what happens IRL?
We need CIVILIZATION to get involved, or islamofascists and sharia law will kill the dreams of our children. They have done so to 400 million already( some say one billion have been murdered by isalm) , in 1400 years. 400 million, thats 130% of the entire population of America.

STOP the madness at all costs, NOW!

Sorry about that.

I shot that one off without reading your earlier post, so I completely misunderstood you. You may be right, but I doubt it:

A canister with chlorine stolen/bought under the nose of reconstruction efforts? Sure. A tanker? Doubtful, since such a theft would have been front page news.

Irony?

Kai on February 20, 2007 at 12:31 PM

Chlorine tanker destined for a water chlorination plant?
Diverted? Chlorine purchased/stolen from legitimate source outside Iraq?

Does Iraq even have running water anymore? Do they ‘purify’ their water supply? By using chlorine?

Damn newsies can’t be bothered with details, takes too much time. Besides, people only read the headlines anymore. Who needs to know the details? As long as the headline supports your prejudice.

rockhauler on February 20, 2007 at 1:19 PM

OK back to the subject. Two summers ago I was passing through one of DC’s airports and ran into a book that had just come out. It was about the rebuilding troops in Iraq. Just tried to find it but I’m afraid someone in the book club has it. Maybe someone here can remember the author and title.

In the book Allah the soldiers were requested to inspect a warehouse with some odd looking gas canisters. Turns out they contained chlorine gas. They were labeled with the insignia of the Iraqi Air force.

I had to do some basic research to find out what someone would be using that much chlorine gas for. The only use I could find was for purifying water. Since when does and air force have that job?

A local reported a truck had pulled up and taken a load of the gas. The troops never called to have the stuff removed and even the author didn’t seem to think much of it then. As I was reading the book on the airplane, oddly enough while sitting next to one of our troops, it became very clear to me that someone had found chemical weapons and it was only a matter of time before the Muslim terrorist set some of these off.

This gas is amazingly deadly and given the right wind conditions and setting, you have the makings of a material that will result is mass murder that could range into the thousands.

Chemical weapons were found. No one reported it. Nothing was done and now that dog has come round to bite.

Entering the keywords “iraq” and “chlorine” produced half a million hits.

A few ‘cherry picked’ from the results, a declassified military document on a .mil site: dated 1991
http://www.gulflink.osd.mil/declassdocs/dia/19950901/950901_511rept_91.html

A discussion of said document on Global Security .org
http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/iraq/fallujah_2.htm

Used as supporting evidence in a White House position paper 2002:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/infocus/iraq/decade/sect3.html

A public document on a cia.gov web site discussing this further:
https://www.cia.gov/cia/reports/iraq_wmd/Iraq_Oct_2002.htm#05

On CNN circa 2003:
http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/asiapcf/south/02/05/sprj.irq.chemicals/index.html

And printed in the Guardian that same year:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,908426,00.html

So what kind of ‘tanker’ truck was it? A propane tank, emptied of propane and filled with chlorine? A a tanker truck load of chlorine headed for a water purification plant? Or something else? What was the source of the chlorine? What quantity?

rockhauler on February 20, 2007 at 7:22 PM

Let’s see here:

Leftists and Democrats say there were no WMD. In addition to th 500 found and announced last year, plus 2 that were used against US troops in 1004, we have clorine gas (a main war gas of WWI) used against civilians.

I guess the traitor LIBERALS and DEMOCRATS LIED, didn’t they?
