Is Iran on the ropes?

posted at 4:09 pm on February 20, 2007 by Allahpundit

Here’s a little traffic for our favorite guestblogger, who’s got the good word about that Iranian economic implosion we’ve all been waiting for. No foreign investment = declining oil production = declining terror funds = happier days in Iraq and Lebanon and, insh’allah, regime change in Tehran. (And, natch, much higher gas prices for a good long while.) The key is getting Europeans to cut off their money; appealing to them on moral grounds won’t do it but the prospect of Iranian nuclear ICBMs might. We’ll know soon enough. And by “soon enough” I mean tomorrow.

Update: Barnett e-mails with a good point:

My question is … what will take the current regime’s place? a Jeffersonian Democracy? Or perhaps a tyrant who combines all the worst traits of Saddam Hussein and Khomeini.

Economic dislocations usually don’t produce good regimes.

So what happens if Iraq stabilizes and Iran collapses under Bush’s presure? Will the dems appologize for their hate filled rhetoric that would have stopped all of this?

I won’t hold my breath.

One Angry Christian on February 20, 2007 at 4:20 PM

Obviously, Allahpundit does not realize that the biggest danger in the world is presented by Israel’s threat to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities. Therefore, we need to defang Israel immediately if world peace is to be realized. At least, this what Edwards has told us.

No, they’ll just redefine peace like they did success. They’ll call it low unemployment or good power plant output.

tadams1138 on February 20, 2007 at 4:24 PM

Just a simple demonstration. A couple of B2s and a couple of F117s…..just a fly over every now and then….a couple of parachute flares….oh look there is another one….
That would get a few Iranian air force officers heads rolling.

ElBaradei is urging the adoption of a “double simultaneous suspension” of Iran’s enrichment programme and of UN sanctions,

Double-secret probation!

I swear I read something in the last couple of weeks about a Saudi plan to drive the price of oil down below Iran’s rather high profit point to waste their economy. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Yah, it’s one of the ways we won the cold war. Cool, no?

Mojave Mark on February 20, 2007 at 4:55 PM

sounds about right Coffee…..

something about the Saudi’s supporting the Sunni’s and using the oil weapon on Iran….pretty friggin poetic.

This is a welcome development. However, let’s not count our chickens before they hatch. North Korea has been on the ropes for years, and they’ve managed to stay alive with nuclear blackmail. Let’s hope for a general war between Shia and Sunni in the Mideast. Let’s arm the Kurds, and watch the Umma implode.

PRCalDude on February 20, 2007 at 5:07 PM

Barnett and PRCalDude are right; the tree may be rotten but that doesn’t mean we’ll like where it’s going to fall. I hope, to borrow a leftish talking point, that we will plan for victory here and try to control events to where a faction we like gets into power.

And that whoever it is doesn’t have nuclear weapons.

see-dubya on February 20, 2007 at 5:11 PM

The only fly in this ointment is the Europeans. You have to remember that a whole heap of them didn’t mind being targeted by Soviet intermediate-range nuclear missiles back in the day; their objection was to the Pershings designed to fight back in that range.

steveegg on February 20, 2007 at 5:18 PM

Well, of course Iran is on the ropes.

With Murtha and Pelosi “running the show”, Iran and the rest of the middle east will become peaceful paradises. The lions Shia and Sunnis will lie down with the lambs Jews. All the world will prosper and all swords will be beaten into plowshares.

(That was sarcasm by the way)

I’m afraid that the idea of Iran being “on the ropes” and a significant regime change is somewhat premature. Oh, They may get rid of Ahmadinejad because of his big mouth, but their overall plans and intentions will not change…. They will just not be as ‘honest’ about them.

LegendHasIt on February 20, 2007 at 5:19 PM

This is a welcome development. However, let’s not count our chickens before they hatch. North Korea has been on the ropes for years, and they’ve managed to stay alive with nuclear blackmail.

And a couple of sugar daddies in the forms of the dearly-departed Soviet Union and the ever-growing Red China.

Let’s hope for a general war between Shia and Sunni in the Mideast. Let’s arm the Kurds, and watch the Umma implode.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that remembers that part of the plan. As long as we have the will to finish off the weakened survivor,….

Allahpundit is being very positive today. Maybe he got a raise, or a date with Kirsten? Perhaps our Hot Air celebrity will share the good news.

As a kid growing up during the ‘hide under your desk’ generation it was a surreal moment when I walked into a Las Vegas casino mens room and loosed my liquor ration onto a section of the Berlin Wall. Who woulda thunk it?

I don’t think they are close to collapse but then again I never thought I would be urinating tyrrany either.

No, they’ll claim that their rise to congressional power and the “pressure” they put on the president entitles them to the credit. You can lose with these people, but you can’t possibly win.

Blacklake on February 20, 2007 at 5:36 PM

The Democrats are digging their own graves. Literally. The terrorists will attack Washington again, and next time it’ll be much bigger. I wish it weren’t so. The terrorists aren’t going to distinguish between Republicans and Democrats during the next 9/11, and there’s going to be a lot of dead politicians if they don’t start taking Islamism seriously.

The Persians, self-admittedly quite different from Arabs, were decent enough folks before 1979, right?
What were they like pre Ayatolla? and do they have a chance of returning to a quiet decent country? The public doesn’t seem to like their president, but that could be spin…look at our very own MSM. Might be we should put a Shaw back in there…/?

IMO you tip them over the edge…

Just hit the gasoline pipelines and tanks..

They already have a gasoline shortage that is killing their economy…

Get on the radio and tell the Iranian people… sorry we have to do this, but your government is running around threatening people… so we’re not gonna let them drive their vehicles… sorry for the inconvenience… oh… and by the way… look to the sky before crossing any bridges.. their next…

Then… load up the F-22s…

Read “The Legacy of Jihad” by Andrew Bostom. Read also “The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam” by Robert Spencer. There are brief patches where Muslims take a turn for the normal, as in the case of the Persians under the Shah, but the Ayatollahs are always ready to revive the true Islam. Sunni, Shia, it doesn’t matter.

PRCalDude on February 20, 2007 at 6:13 PM

I sure hope Israel gets to nuke em before it happens, just so Edwards prediction comes true!

lorien1973 on February 20, 2007 at 7:32 PM

The ONLY way the Mullahocracy can do or finance anything is with the sale of crude. They can no longer even refine enough gasoline for their own needs. And the only way they keep the populace partially pacified is with cheap gas and other consumer subsidies. Blockade them, if strong measures are necessary. Blockade, do not bomb. If they cannot sell crude oil, they are fini.

Not a good point! It’s blissfully ignorant babble at best. Doesn’t Barnett know that Ahmadinejad has stated he wants to wipe the United States and Israel off the map. And if left alone he will eventually have the ability to carry through on that threat. And while it’s very silly to believe any follow-on regime would be “Jeffersonian”(how snarky of Barnett), nevertheless how could any follow-on regime be any worse than Ahmadinejad ?

Maxx on February 20, 2007 at 9:20 PM

My question is … how much would it slow em down? How long will it take them to get back to this point? Two years? Five? 20?…..If you leave the regime in place how the heck is that going to accomplish anything?

Drag em back far enough they might get Hammurabi.

Limerick on February 20, 2007 at 10:45 PM

The traitorous dems will always exaggerate the bad and minimize the good, so that is no revelation of huge significance.

If we win in Iraq the dems will shift to something else, never admitting their stupidity.

Just watch how honera behaves. She/he is the poster child for traitorous stupid liberal moonbat bloggers.

The only ropes that the Iranian leadership need to be on are the same kind as Saddam.

Swingin’ Shi’ites.

Off to meet the 12th Imam / Hidden Madhi / Beelzebub.

Wounded despotic regimes (SEE: The Third Reich, after D-Day) are notorious for Gotterdammerung finales.

Best to squeeze them from every angle until their own people tire of the trouble and give the mad mullahs a retirement necktie party.

(Maybe this is why Mahmoud studiously avoids wearing one?)

Shooter, In the 70′s the Sha was a cold war ally letting us listen in on Russia. The US did screw up in Iran pre-WWII overthrowing a leader to put (I think) the Sha’s father in power. (Can’t find my book right now.) It was a foreign policy blunder in hindsight. That history had much to do with the Iranian revolution’s hatred of the US. I still want payback for 79 as much as anybody. They do however, have one legitimate historical gripe. But nukes? No way.

Buck Turgidson on February 21, 2007 at 12:29 AM

Is Iran on the ropes?

Maybe.

But we can assuredly PUT THEM THERE by (1) bombing their military installations and Revolutionary Guards HQ and training camps, blockading their ports, and dropping a few precision guided bombs on their religious and political leadership’s homes and offices.

But, that would nto be politically correct, right?
