Is there any reason to believe that’s true? Yeah, actually. Insurgent leaders and Sunni Arab politicians say divisions between insurgent groups and Al Qaeda in Iraq have widened and have led to combat in some areas of the country, a schism that U.S. officials hope to exploit. This could be partly political, but it could have more to do with the various religious sects themselves. Christopher Hitchens just released an excellent article on this topic where he provides more detail on this. As extreme as the Wahhabist's and other "versions" of the Muslim faith are, if their plan for a caliphate is ever going to materialize it will require (don't laugh because it sounds so impossible) all the religious sects uniting together. Barring that, the only option is to battle for king of the hill.

It seems more likely that, although Syria has an interest at keeping violence in Iraq at a sustainable boil, its Alawite-led regime has plenty to fear from Wahabist al Qaida. This could be just a way of keeping the scales in balance.
