Open thread: “The Half-Hour News Hour”; Update: Video added
posted at 9:30 pm on February 18, 2007 by Allahpundit
We’re 30 minutes away here on the east coast. Video highlights and/or lowlights will be available in this spot after the show. If you’re watching, feel free to weigh in below in real time. In fact, I encourage it — it’s not easy paring down 22 minutes of footage to the best (or worst) three, so feedback will be help.
Here’s the Times’s review, which bemoans the fact that the show isn’t as even-handed as, um, “The Daily Show.” Quote: “It’s a strange new comic order when the actor and environmentalist Ed Begley Jr. and his hybrid cars loom larger than the Iraq war, the deficit or White House leaks.” And here’s this morning’s post on THHNH.
Update: A comic abortion. An historic debacle. A Lovecraftian newsbeast that crawled from the sea to feast upon the brains of Fox viewers and usher in a thousand-year age of humorless darkness.
No, I’m kidding. It wasn’t, er, unspeakably awful, although obviously it needs work. Here are five semi-random minutes, some good, some bad. The lowlight was the t-shirt bit with a doughy Dom Irrera, which broke the cardinal rule of never using a joke where you have to explain the punchline. Clearly the writers were afraid the audience wouldn’t recognize the guys on the shirts; hence the clumsy exposition by the anchors. Ironically, the bits that played best were the faux ACLU ads, which also relied heavily on exposition but got away with it by using a device that calls for that sort of thing.
The news segment one-liners here were the best of the bunch except for the first one about Hillary, which reeked but drew the biggest laughs of the night. Tells you where the audience is coming from. Meanwhile, expect some pretty vicious rants and important action alerts from the nutroots tomorrow about the prison rape joke at Ed Begley’s expense. Begley’s environmentalism was a running gag throughout the show, including a line about his car being fueled by his own waste. Who could have seen that one coming? Except everyone, I mean.
Exit question: What are the odds that (a) Stewart or Colbert will goof on it tomorrow night to the tune of “you guys stick to getting us into unwinnable Middle East quagmires, we’ll handle the comedy,” and (b) the nutroots will declare said goof more brilliantly funny than the Faux News show will evuh evuh be?
Update: The big question: is it better for conservative comedy if a weak show fails quickly, or if it struggles on for awhile and proves there’s an audience? See-Dub says the latter:
If the .5HNH does marginally well, somewhere some funny conservative guy is going to sit down over Bellinis with a rival network executive and point that fact out, and then say he knows how that demographic and then some–maybe a little younger and hipper–could be owned by this rival network. And then he’ll take out a proposal for a rival show, and explain that it’s like the .5HNH…except actually funny.
So if .5HNH takes off, it will show there’s an audience for this kind of humor. Hell, if .5HNH takes off, I think it proves there’s an audience desperate for this kind of humor. So let’s stop wishing for it to fail, because in the TV conservative comedy game, it’s the army we have. (It and Gutfeld’s Redeye, that is.) Until we can build a better one.

Ugh.
How long do you think it will last before it gets cancelled and replaced with yet another Hannity spinoff?

Yeah, but it’s sort of true (excepting of course I havent seen the thing yet, but from what i have seen and hear)–The Daily Show is liberal, but it’s not totally discordant when they take a shot at a Democrat. From what we’ve heard it sounds like a shot at the President–kind of an important figure in the news–would be jarringly out of place in this GOP lovefest. Likewise, the Iraq war–kind of the biggest issue in the world, so what are they going to do with it? It aint easy to satirize it without holding the GOP up to the fire, so it sounds like they’re going to downplay it, which is just sad.
Alex K on February 18, 2007 at 9:37 PM
It’s like the superbowl. A sad, sad superbowl. Where the outcome is known ahead of time; but you still want to watch because your team will go down in flames that you once thought unfathomable.
Being said, I’m keeping an open mind.
lorien1973 on February 18, 2007 at 9:38 PM
no good can come out of this. conservatives can be funny, but not on fox news. god help us.
triple on February 18, 2007 at 9:40 PM
I’m actually watching Hannity right now. This interview with the Imam is why I hate Hannity. Hannity is so intent on trying to prove himself right; when he should just let the imam hang himself with his own words.
lorien1973 on February 18, 2007 at 9:43 PM
Yeah you have to give the Daily Show some credit for at least taking shots at Democrats when they do things so stupid that even liberals can’t ignore them.
If this show is done along the same line of thinking then Bush would be an easy target for any number of issues where he has strayed off the conservative side. Immigration and spending would be a good start for instance.
If it’s a Bush love fest then I won’t continue to watch it. There’s just too much about him that I find appalling in a supposedly conservative leader to sit through 30 minutes of building him up as some sort of hero.
However if it’s a sarcasm laden attack on the Democrats that conveniently ignores certain facts that make the Democrats look better than they are being portrayed, then it’s a perfect conservative version of the Daily Show.
Benaiah on February 18, 2007 at 9:55 PM
This belongs on a network with Dan Rather. I think it undermines an all news channel’s credibility. Kinda like a comedian running for the senate.
infidel on February 18, 2007 at 9:55 PM
get rid of the in your face laughter….
Pam on February 18, 2007 at 10:07 PM
The canned laughter is intolerable.
Alex K on February 18, 2007 at 10:07 PM
The only thing that made me even chuckle so far was the ACLU commercial.
Benaiah on February 18, 2007 at 10:08 PM
I must be watching a different Daily Show. The one i see has a ratio of about 1 to 50 Dem to Repub. jokes. And the Dem jokes are never as biting as the Repub. jokes. Why would this show want to do the same Bush/Iraq jokes that everyone else on the planet is doing? The whole point of the show is to do something different, not to mention the Bush/Iraq jokes were old 2 years ago. The Dems are in power now, so it’s time they get a taste of what Republicans have had to put up with.
forged rite on February 18, 2007 at 10:11 PM
That laugh track is annoying…I dunno, this show shouldn’t be on a “news” channel…it’s fine for something like Comedy Central…
JetBoy on February 18, 2007 at 10:11 PM
Hmmm, you guys are missing one thing though…Comedy Central would not allow anything rightwing on their network.
EnochCain on February 18, 2007 at 10:13 PM
The heck with this crap… I’m watching Battlestar Galactica instead.
Watcher on February 18, 2007 at 10:14 PM
I guess I don’t watch much television. This is horrible. I would NEVER watch this again. The best was the first 15 seconds. What a disappointment.
jatfla on February 18, 2007 at 10:17 PM
I liked what they were trying to do with the communist t-shirts thing, unfortunately they’re not funny so it didn’t work.
Alex K on February 18, 2007 at 10:18 PM
loved the t-shirts. (Idi’d was good, in a sick and twisted way)
Pam on February 18, 2007 at 10:18 PM
Hey, Allah, remember your Che t-shirt with the crosshairs? Ah, that was great. Good times.
Alex K on February 18, 2007 at 10:19 PM
Hey, the crappy preview footage worked for me. I was expecting nothing and I’ve been pleasantly surprised.
SNL has been on for what, like 5 decades, and I’ve only laughed at that about four times.

I.
Would.

Brit-coms.
Limerick on February 18, 2007 at 10:23 PM
Hmmm, So far, I’d say it’s slightly funnier than SNL’s weekend update but it DOES have the benefit of not causing me to scream “LYING BASTARDS” every 15 seconds.
I give it an “I’ve seen worse.” (aka 2/5 stars)

Wow, they really think this Ed Begley thing is deep well.

the aclu segments were the best parts of the show, but that isn’t saying much.
Reagan is glad he’s dead. Baby Jesus cried himself into a trembling dark sleep.
there is a studio audience, though. does that mean no laugh track and people who are sadly and desperately starved for entertainment?
lorien1973 on February 18, 2007 at 10:30 PM
at least it only lasts half an hour
SCGOPgirl on February 18, 2007 at 10:30 PM
I can’t believe they had a real audience. Wasn’t that the laugh track from The Jeffersons?
Laura on February 18, 2007 at 10:31 PM
I didn’t mind it. I’ll watch again. It needs fine tuning, as do a lot of shows that just start out, even The Daily Show stumbled at the beginning.
I loved the ACLU segments best.
Pam on February 18, 2007 at 10:31 PM
Ouch!!! That was painful. I prefer Red Eye.

It was ok. I’ll give it a few more chances. They have the right idea. They just have to work out some bugs. Just like
any new show.
PoliticallyIncorrectSandy on February 18, 2007 at 10:34 PM
Great show; great writing! It was funny from the start to the finish. I watched it with my sister and brother in law in Raleigh, who are hardly active politically, and they thought it was great as well.
Let’s see: We have excellent reviews by various newspapers, including Tom Shales. Conservatives have found it very well done. Yet we have a bunch of new posters on this site, claiming that they hate it and it is awful.
What they are really afraid of is that their monopoly on satire is ended. There were so many funny topics tonight that liberal satire would never touch.
januarius on February 18, 2007 at 10:37 PM
It wasn’t great, it does need work, give it time. I got a few laughs, but it was slow.
DoubleU on February 18, 2007 at 10:38 PM
We will regret this show. No, I am not a new poster. I’m that drunk Irishman who can’t spell worth horsepotatoes. We will regret this show. All FOX has done is give us a right-wing Simon, Paula, and Randy.

It was humorous but I wouldn’t call it funny. There were no real laugh out loud moments, and the best segments were those previoulsy leaked. This show cannot afford to be edgy on the FOX News channel the way it really should be if they want to compete with the Daily Show. I’m afraid it’s a goner.
thedecider on February 18, 2007 at 11:20 PM
I had really low expectations, but it was better than I expected. Not so good that I will bother to record it if I’m going to miss it, but good enough I will watch it when I am home and not doing something else.

TV is replete with shows that almost didn’t make, such as All In The Family, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and I Love Lucy.
The show does need some work, and has great potential.
To show how ridiculous the Global Warming zealots are, I thought that sketch was timely and should be done on a regular basis. Maybe they could add reporters in the street, an expert on everything, Politically Correct and fauxtography segments.
I hope Roger Ailes will give it a chance.
pocomoco on February 18, 2007 at 11:40 PM
Allah’s description of the show is funnier than, well, the actual show.
jaleach on February 18, 2007 at 11:48 PM
Surprisingly funny.
Then again, after reading this blog, I had amazingly low expectations.
It also probably helped that I’d just finished watching Jessica Simpson’s last movie “Employee of the Month,” which, ironically, was the worst movie of the month.
And by month, I mean year. Or perhaps decade.
So by comparison, the Fox News show wasn’t that bad. In fact, by comparison, it was brilliant.
Professor Blather on February 18, 2007 at 11:51 PM
Shouldn’t that be?
RW_theoriginal on February 18, 2007 at 11:53 PM
They should at least change the Foxnews logo to Fauxnews while that show runs.
This show will only give the liberals a reason to point out that Foxnews is not “fair and balanced.”

Professor Blather on February 18, 2007 at 11:51 PM
At least the previews for that movie made it look funny. I haven’t seen it, but it was on my list of movies to watch.
thedecider on February 18, 2007 at 11:58 PM
Do not want.
It wasn’t good. The first thing they must do is lose the laugh track added to miked studio hands. I think they had three Key Grips so that 2 of them could clap while the other one covered for them. They’ll never get better without real feedback.
They also need to hire some good writers, stop trying to be a ‘Conservative Answer to The Daily Show’, and not tape 2 weeks in advance.
The show looked like a terrible liberal parody of what they think a conservative comedy show would be.
askheaves on February 19, 2007 at 12:01 AM
There is an untapped goldmine of jokes targeting Dems for miscellaneous Iraq-war related items. I don’t know why they chose not to go there. (Maybe they did… I just watched your clip.)
DaveS on February 19, 2007 at 12:14 AM
About what I accused on the other thread about this show. Liberal writers doing less than their best to present the image that conservatives aren’t funny. You’d think people would catch on, but then again, the dKos and DU crowd think Colbert really is conservative, so who knows…
Freelancer on February 19, 2007 at 12:30 AM
I thought the same thing but then realized this was made a week or so ago and they probably avoided any topic where the situation is in a state of flux.
I hope after the two pilot episodes that changes.

Odds on Exit Questions:
a) 3:1
b) 1:1
I’m burning a DVD of the show recorded on my Windows Media Center to watch later, so I cannot comment on the content. However, I want to point out that no matter what, even the idea of a show such as 1/2 Hour News Hour appeals to a huge demographic: Those millions of hard working and educated Americans living, working, and (wait for it…) praying in those “flyover states”
This huge demographic is starved for any kind of entertainment that doesn’t snark at every action in their daily lives and deride them as an insignificant rabble of toothless, moronic hick zombies.
Look, Hee Haw had a 24 year run on TV. As much as elitist snobs will hate The 1/2 Hour News Hour for being safe and corny, there is a huge market for it–especially at a time when every other entertainment choice you see is a personal attack on your traditional lifestyle.
Having said that, I really do want The People’s Cube guys to video some skits and send it to FNC.
ScottMcC on February 19, 2007 at 12:56 AM
The big mistake was not doing the show live. Apparently, it was a management decision to video tape the two shows in advance.
As a network that produces live news as it happens, I don’t understand their decision.
The fear factor must have been very high among the ‘suits’.
pocomoco on February 19, 2007 at 1:06 AM
Anybody remember what I said about Weekend Update being able to cut away from the politics and do Operaman?
Well, I was glad to see the Suzanne Somers joke, which was that kind of palette cleanser. They were setting it up and I was thinking “oh, Hollywood liberal bashing, ho-hum.” But even though the punchline wasn’t a gutbuster it paid off because I had expected a political joke. They ought to do more non-political stuff so when they go for a political punchline it’s fresher.
Aside from that, based on this clip I’m not going to run out and sign up for cable, but I wouldn’t necessarily change the channel if it came on in a hotel room.
see-dubya on February 19, 2007 at 1:09 AM
They should hire me as their writer.
The Therapist on February 19, 2007 at 1:33 AM
The t-shirt segment was good precisely because of the exposition. Even assuming Fox News draws a better-than-average intelligence crowd, a lot of Americans simply don’t know history or the faces of evil placed on the t-shirts, hence the naming of names.
Second, the joke is that liberal moonbats and trust-fund college students sporting Che chic would never seriously contemplate wearing t-shirts honoring the other dictators in the segment (maybe they would, which is even more scary and makes the segment more insightful). Conservatives and bloggers have attacked Che chic for some time but many still don’t know who Che is or what he stood (and killed) for, knowing only that fashionable visage so common on t-shirts.
elpresidente on February 19, 2007 at 1:36 AM
Ugh, just watched the recording.
Worse than expected.
The commentors who said that those of us who didn’t like the show are leftie trolls in the previous thread can come back now. That show sucked the joy out of my heart — I have nothing left. You guys win.
I’ll be your trollberry.
mesablue on February 19, 2007 at 1:41 AM
Great idea but a little late. This should have started in the 70s with the advent of Norman Lear’s culture bender crusade beginning with with All In The Family!
sonnyspats1 on February 19, 2007 at 1:42 AM
Oh, come on… All In the Family wasn’t all bad. One of my favorite Archie Bunker quotes was from when he was arguing with his daughter, and she was complaining about how many people were killed by handguns every year… and his response was: “Would it make you feel any better little gurl, if they was pushed outta windows?”
Watcher on February 19, 2007 at 1:57 AM
Funny enough. The main thing about this is the ground-breaker potential. Humor is a lethal weapon when used right. Coulter is also very funny, but the mainstream “culture” makes sure she’s defined at the “far right”. TV shows that expose liberal stupidity getting into the mainstream – that’s revolutionary, if and when it happens.
Halley on February 19, 2007 at 2:07 AM
i haven’t actually seen that happen ever. are we talking about like when stewart invited biden on after the “blacks don’t wash themselves” comment to laugh it off in a “we’ll get through this one together” sort of way?
jummy on February 19, 2007 at 2:19 AM
the aclu bits were funny. its clear that the actors don’t have comedy backgrounds. the laughter doesn’t seem so much “canned” as it does live but forced (is that surnow in the audience there?). they should’ve done it live, but i still say that this doesn’t belong on a news channel. the conflation will hurt the news of course more than the comedy show. irreperably, regardless of how soon they cancel it. could’ve been worse, but still, not good enough.
jummy on February 19, 2007 at 2:26 AM
My thoughts exactly. Loved the t-shirt skit.
Capitalist Infidel on February 19, 2007 at 3:48 AM
It felt like the writers spent either:
A. not nearly enough time spent reading their material aloud
B. entirely too much time writing and re-writing
As Jim Mora would say “that sucked”.
benrand on February 19, 2007 at 4:24 AM
I saw two writers listed on the credits. They should hire eight more. SNL has close to a dozen I believe.
It was there first show and they will work on what to keep and what not to keep. What really was bothersome was explaining the joke during the t-shirt bit and the choice of making the character an arrogant jerk in the global warming bit. Both big mistakes that veteran comedy writers would not make.
The failings of this show were the choices made by the writing staff and that can be corrected.
Also, they might look to the improv comedy community for talent. SNL and Mad TV get a lot of writing and acting talent from places like IO, UCB theater, the Groundlings. Young, cheap and enthusiastic.
Bill C on February 19, 2007 at 4:52 AM
Unfortunately Fox ruined its rep by having Rush on the show. The ACLU bits were awesome! It couldn’t be more true! But anyone who bashes Fox/Rush will not be able to produce facts to back their arguements. They always resort to insults or drug (pain kiler) addiction because they can’t face the facts. And rumors always fly more than fact in the media.
El Guapo on February 19, 2007 at 4:53 AM
The T-shrit bit was for the “very” informed current events nut, which i am, so i found it funy.
El Guapo on February 19, 2007 at 4:55 AM
ACLU clips were so great, lol.
I think this show should stop trying to be a rip off of Weekend Update and the Daily Show and just completely do it’s own thing. Like, still have the same premise, but mess around with the formula. Does that make any sense? I don’t know. It’s like the production of this show is paint by numbers…
It seems like the anchors have no chemistry whatsoever, too, and that’s kinda boring. Very cardboard.
But while the delivery wasn’t great, some of the jokes still were funny enough.
emmaline1138 on February 19, 2007 at 5:49 AM
New idea for a Hot Air show: AP uses The Half-Hour News Hour’s topics but makes them into jokes that are funny. Release a few days later. Call it the Five Minute Half-Hour News Hour. Bill Ardolino can co-write. Goldstein can deliver. I’d watch the hell out of that.
Mark Jaquith on February 19, 2007 at 6:27 AM
I found it generally humorous but the biggest problem I had is that, unlike “The Daily Show” and “SNL Weekend Update” — the “anchors” played it *totally* straight — like they were completely unaware they were telling jokes. They had no personality.
If you watch any of the other two, the anchors make it very obvious that they know they’re joking. That they’re really comedians pretending to be anchors. I understand the point, but think this show plays it too straight…and that will get tiresome. In this format, the actors will never be able to even slightly break character and laugh along with the joke.
As for quality of jokes, some worked, some didn’t – but this is no different from the others. Many were rather funny. It’s all in the delivery.
pjaromin on February 19, 2007 at 7:08 AM
It was more uncomfortable than funny.
Jane Curtin and Aykroyd had chemistry, these writers need to pull out some old SNLs to see how satire is done.
I mean, play up satire on FNC, why the hell not, be more biting, have some balls. Quit holding up Tina Fey as the ideal, she is awful.
benrand on February 19, 2007 at 7:33 AM
Would love to see Dennis Miller write and perform this show.
Although, I thought it was pretty funny, in certain parts. The Daily Show will take one scrawny little pot shot at the Democraps and the rest is strictly and unfairly aimed at the Republicans. Is that fair and balanced?
lynnv on February 19, 2007 at 8:13 AM
I liked it and thought it was funny. I hope they keep doing the show. I will watch it if they do. Shining a light on the hypocrisy and idiocy of the liberal left in any form is fine by me.
