Open thread: “The Half-Hour News Hour”; Update: Video added

We’re 30 minutes away here on the east coast. Video highlights and/or lowlights will be available in this spot after the show. If you’re watching, feel free to weigh in below in real time. In fact, I encourage it — it’s not easy paring down 22 minutes of footage to the best (or worst) three, so feedback will be help.
Here’s the Times’s review, which bemoans the fact that the show isn’t as even-handed as, um, “The Daily Show.” Quote: “It’s a strange new comic order when the actor and environmentalist Ed Begley Jr. and his hybrid cars loom larger than the Iraq war, the deficit or White House leaks.” And here’s this morning’s post on THHNH.
Update: A comic abortion. An historic debacle. A Lovecraftian newsbeast that crawled from the sea to feast upon the brains of Fox viewers and usher in a thousand-year age of humorless darkness.
No, I’m kidding. It wasn’t, er, unspeakably awful, although obviously it needs work. Here are five semi-random minutes, some good, some bad. The lowlight was the t-shirt bit with a doughy Dom Irrera, which broke the cardinal rule of never using a joke where you have to explain the punchline. Clearly the writers were afraid the audience wouldn’t recognize the guys on the shirts; hence the clumsy exposition by the anchors. Ironically, the bits that played best were the faux ACLU ads, which also relied heavily on exposition but got away with it by using a device that calls for that sort of thing.
The news segment one-liners here were the best of the bunch except for the first one about Hillary, which reeked but drew the biggest laughs of the night. Tells you where the audience is coming from. Meanwhile, expect some pretty vicious rants and important action alerts from the nutroots tomorrow about the prison rape joke at Ed Begley’s expense. Begley’s environmentalism was a running gag throughout the show, including a line about his car being fueled by his own waste. Who could have seen that one coming? Except everyone, I mean.
Exit question: What are the odds that (a) Stewart or Colbert will goof on it tomorrow night to the tune of “you guys stick to getting us into unwinnable Middle East quagmires, we’ll handle the comedy,” and (b) the nutroots will declare said goof more brilliantly funny than the Faux News show will evuh evuh be?
Update: The big question: is it better for conservative comedy if a weak show fails quickly, or if it struggles on for awhile and proves there’s an audience? See-Dub says the latter:
If the .5HNH does marginally well, somewhere some funny conservative guy is going to sit down over Bellinis with a rival network executive and point that fact out, and then say he knows how that demographic and then some–maybe a little younger and hipper–could be owned by this rival network. And then he’ll take out a proposal for a rival show, and explain that it’s like the .5HNH…except actually funny.
So if .5HNH takes off, it will show there’s an audience for this kind of humor. Hell, if .5HNH takes off, I think it proves there’s an audience desperate for this kind of humor. So let’s stop wishing for it to fail, because in the TV conservative comedy game, it’s the army we have. (It and Gutfeld’s Redeye, that is.) Until we can build a better one.

I give the daily show and colbert credit for actually BEING FUNNY! I mean yes they rip on my core beliefs every second of the show, but what makes them comedy shows is I still laugh every joke there is.
There are no liberal comedy shows and conservative comedy shows.
There is bad comedy, and good comedy. This is bad comedy. Its horrible comedy. And if fox gives it another shot im going to have to re-evaluate why exactly I keep watching them. (oh who am I kidding, its cuz I love shep.)
triple on February 19, 2007 at 9:44 AM
And the whole show is just like, well its like watching a political ad that tries to be clever. Its not like im watching comedy, its like some old marketing guy for the GOP wrote these jokes and emailed em to fox.
triple on February 19, 2007 at 9:46 AM
I didn’t see it, can I borrow someone’s video tape of it?
spacemonkey on February 19, 2007 at 9:48 AM
I agree. If we eat this show alive (which seems very likely), then we’re basically telling Hollywood that appealing to conservatives is a waste of time.
Esthier on February 19, 2007 at 9:51 AM
Why dont they get Iowahawk to write for them?
JasonG on February 19, 2007 at 10:04 AM
I’m going to disagree with that AP. The audience gets who they were, it is the consumer of the product that has no idea, and that is the joke..kinda dumb I know. I saw Andy Garcia on a Fox show, and he was asked about the kids wearing the Che shirts, he said, in reality, these kids really have no idea who the man is, they just knows it’s cool to wear the shirt.
Put an evil dictator on a crisp white tee, with a catchy slogan and you too will make a fortune.
My favorite was still the Idi Amin shirt.
Pam on February 19, 2007 at 10:08 AM
I thought this was about the HFNH, not “30 Rock”.
Nethicus on February 19, 2007 at 10:17 AM
I don’t know, I think the bit above it pretty damn funny. If the whole show is like that, I’d watch.
Drum on February 19, 2007 at 10:35 AM
I hate “an historic”. Why can’t we just realise that when using an word that begins with an consonant that we precede it with “a” (regardless of “English rules”)?
tadams1138 on February 19, 2007 at 10:39 AM
So you say “a hour?”
JasonG on February 19, 2007 at 10:41 AM
touche…. (which looks like it should be pronounced touchy)
But for the sake of dragging on an argument that has no place here: Yes!
The passive tense is also used by me to spite my English teachers.
tadams1138 on February 19, 2007 at 10:48 AM
Why dont they get Iowahawk to write for them?
JasonG on February 19, 2007 at 10:04 AM
Definitely!!! And don’t forget to grab up Frankj from IMAO!!
Lonevoice on February 19, 2007 at 11:03 AM
The show, which seems to be a cross between SNL and Mad TV, wasn’t too bad at all. As it was the first in the series I can see that they will have to expand their boundaries, but I hope they keep the ACLU skits, and get more current with their ‘news’ stories.
They should give Paul Shanklin a call if they the need for ideas and talent.
So, when can we expect to see Michelle on the program?
DannoJyd on February 19, 2007 at 11:03 AM
definitely needs work, but there were some damn good lines in there.
:-)
One Angry Christian on February 19, 2007 at 11:19 AM
Maybe the clip was the highlights, but… I liked it. The previous clip I saw with the BO magazine wasn’t funny, but this clip really worked somehow. I say give it a chance.
JamesVersusEveryone on February 19, 2007 at 11:40 AM
I liked the ACLU clips but am keeping an open mind as well. I thought the t-shirt skit was interesting.
Catie96706 on February 19, 2007 at 12:26 PM
I LIKED it. I nearly fell out of my chair when Coulter walked out. I’d vote that ticket in a minute.
The rest of it was about as hit and miss as a SNL Weekend Update usually is to me. A couple of LOL moments, and few smiles. A couple of things didn’t work for me, but that is true of most comedy shows. I’d watch it, tho I think 10pm is a difficult time slot.
tbolick on February 19, 2007 at 12:28 PM
A good start, had some good lines, but needs work. Where is Dennis Miller when you need him?
I would love to see this show develop into a really funny hit from beginning to end. Some of the pieces, especially abou the ACLU were so right on, but too close to the truth to be funny.
The show needs better material, better presentation, and more emphasis on humor than political content. The show is a big step in the right direction however.
For an example of some excellent conservative humor may I suggest Shire Network News, link in Hot Air’s “Hot Links”. I enjoy their material very much.
omegaram on February 19, 2007 at 12:34 PM
To be honest it wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be, I did laugh a few times. Although both anchors combined don’t have as much personality as Jon Stewart has in his little finger. I mean really, one Stewart eyebrowl-furrowed-mock surprise-face is more charismatic than everything these guys did all show. Although it was their first outing so I’m sure they’ll improve with time.
Oh, and one quick question: while the ACLU does provide tons of material for conservative comedy, I thought the first “commercial” was a little off-base. I thought pretty much everyone, liberals and conservatives, agreed that any group, no matter how vile and despicable, from neo-Nazi’s, to the godhatesfags losers, to gays, to abortion activists on both sides of the debate had the right to assemble and voice their opinions. I mean, it’s kind of the very definition of freedom of speech and assembly. Am I wrong on this? Are you against the neo-Nazi’s right to hold their little hate rallies? You know, the old, “I hate what you say, but I’d die for your right to say it…”
JaHerer22 on February 19, 2007 at 12:45 PM
Maybe they should have Bob Barr on to eat some “tit-cheese”?
natesnake on February 19, 2007 at 1:04 PM
the show was fantastic, terrific counter point SNL and other left-wing supporting humor vehicles. My only complaint was the laff track and the fact it was only 30 minutes.
Rush as POTUS – YES!
BO – had me in stitches
Ama-nut-job t-short, Shiite happens – finally some raghead irreverence.
MikeG on February 19, 2007 at 1:06 PM
Same thing popped into my mind when I saw it. I like to think of myself as conservative, but this one bothered me, as I had recently had a discussion with my college age daughter where I took this exact position. She was more on the “it’s ok to limit hate speech at college” side of things. Hoping she’ll grow out of it ;-)
bspoogeferd on February 19, 2007 at 2:59 PM
I liked the ACLU take offs. I doubt anyone will believe them to be true though in a show like this. Since the state of liberalism is at this point SO SAD, if you can’t laugh a little at it, you have no choice but to cry…
cry for America anyway.
NRA4Freedom on February 19, 2007 at 3:19 PM
It was alright, but not great. Agree that the ACLU bits were constructed best. Lose the laugh-track!
Oxybeles on February 19, 2007 at 3:25 PM
I haven’t seen half of the posters for this thread ever before on HotAir, and yet each one of them strangely has a terrible review for the show, which was very funny, insightful, and clever.
Judging from all the trolls on this topic, liberals are having a meltdown about the surprisingly funny and professional satire show on Fox.
The show even got a good review from Tom Shales and we’re supposed to believe that half the people here did not like it? Too funny.
The show was great and there were at least a dozen topics–from the type of children’s books that the NEA promotes to global warming to the ACLU–that liberal satire would never touch. Hence, the left-wing hysteria and need to post negative reviews while pretending to be conservative.
januarius on February 19, 2007 at 3:51 PM
I must admit that I don’t get “an historic” either. I thought the rule was “a” before a consonant and “an” before a vowel. I would say “a historic” however, with hour, I would say “an hour” quite simply because, in my dialect of English (and, I think, in most dialects of English) the h is not pronounced making it “an our”. If we didn’t write, it would be likely that people wouldn’t even remember there was ever an h in hour (since no one ever pronounces it) and it wouldn’t even be a question.
Now, to make this post on topic to avoid banning, I have to say it was better than I was expecting. I still don’t think it’s great. However, when I watch early episodes of shows I like (such as Friends, Seinfeld, etc), they are fairly lame. The characters are flat…the jokes aren’t that great….you get the idea. It can take a while for a new show to get in it’s groove (especially a sketch-ish comedy show). I’d give it a few episodes before I declared it hopelessly lost.
JadeNYU on February 19, 2007 at 4:19 PM
It’s “an” before words that start with an “h” that have a vowel sound, like honor, hour and heir. Whether or not to use it before historic is a subject of debate.
You write “a history” and many argue the same should follow for historic, but I can understand the argument that the “h” sound is more prominent in history than in historic.
Basically, if you’re going to put an a before an h-word, just make sure the h can be heard.
Esthier on February 19, 2007 at 4:44 PM
someone call the grammar police. there’s a 5 alarm grammar debate going on here!
lorien1973 on February 19, 2007 at 4:55 PM
I missed it last night, but with the few clips around (here and youtube), I didn’t miss much. Slightly amusing, but too much like The Daily Show, SNL news and Colbert in their style.
I’ll give it a month to get their act together.
George Ford on February 19, 2007 at 5:27 PM
I thought the show was pretty funny, especially the first five minutes. The T-shirt sketch had promise but needed a few more drafts to get a belly laugh. That last part about every problem being only six degrees removed from global warming is so true. The MSM blames EVERYTHING on global warming. This week in the Washington Post they had a front page story on erosion eating away an old cemetery which turned into a story on global warming. Heck, if lefties lose a sock in the dryer, it’s global warming at work.
Tantor on February 19, 2007 at 5:32 PM
It wouldn’t hurt them to bounce their ideas off Ace & Allah. I mean, why wait and receive their critiques when it’s too late to make changes? Ian can supply the embarrassing political celebrity photos.
Kralizec on February 19, 2007 at 5:47 PM
Great stuff. Get Dennis Miller to throw-in on this.
Mojave Mark on February 19, 2007 at 6:11 PM
I didn’t mind it at all, although whether or not it belongs on Fox News is a different question. Perhaps they should move it to Fox Network, and show it before MAD TV on Saturdays.
In front of a live audience.
The chick has a bit of the Tina Fey thing going on.
Martin on February 19, 2007 at 7:36 PM
I’m putting in the request for an Ace/Allah/Ihawk/Frankj comedy consortium. Oh, and the dude from Scrappleface, too, for the family-friendly stuff.

Oh God. A magazine devoted to Obama called B.O.; a bit on the popularity of Che Guavera tee-shirts; Ed Begley’s electric car breaks down but as it runs on waste, he’ll be on his way soon.
How Mark Twain.
honora on February 20, 2007 at 9:26 AM
I thought the show (aside from the Rush Limbaugh/Ann Coulter spot) was actually quite good.
Hilts on February 20, 2007 at 10:54 AM
You know what the problem is here? It being a conservative based show and there is a double standard. Where SNL and The Jon Stewart show can say or offend as much as they like because..hey..they are just joking, the conservative show will not be able to get away with much.
Tell me you weren’t wincing a bit when they brought up Obama? Weren’t you wondering if they were going to do something a bit offensive? Jon Stewart can get away with a Obama/fried chicken joke. This show CANNOT.
And that is just the way it is.
Rightwingsparkle on February 20, 2007 at 3:10 PM
Ok back on topic: I move for the rules of English to be modified to replace “an historic” with “a historic” and any other word where the “h” is pronounced (cockney accent be darned). And I couldn’t be prouder to have started a grammar debate here. :D
Off topic: I saw that Half Hour News Hour some of the people posting here saw, and I am only disapointed that to have to wait so long for the next episode. Unless I heard wrong, the next one airs on the 4th. Bummer, this looks really promising.
As for those of you that say that Jon Stewart is sooooooo much of a better host, Jon Stewart was not the first host of the daily show and they keep changing weekend update hosts on SNL. So it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to have to take a while to find the perfect host for this one.
tadams1138 on February 20, 2007 at 4:20 PM
Not that bad. Better than some SNL segments I’ve seen.
Jon Stewart can get away with a Obama/fried chicken joke. This show CANNOT.
Yeah, if you laugh at liberal totems you’re being mean and probably racist. But Jon “scary talent” Stewart can make a career out of arching his eyebrows. Pop culture is not a level playing field.
