Photoshop Fun at the Victory Caucus (Mark Steyn update)

AllahPundit says the fish are still biting and invited me to throw up a post or two today before the cane comes out to yank me off stage. So:

The Victory Caucus is leaning especially on the Congressional Republicans who supported the “declare defeat and get out” resolution. Right now they have a great thread up about photoshops of Florida congressman Ric Keller. But to get all the “lawnmower” jokes, you first need to read about Keller’s bizarre groundskeeping analogy.

Note to Keller: we’re not “mowing the neighbor’s lawn”. We’re fighting a gang in the neighbor’s house to the death before they take over that end of the neighborhood, so we can keep them out of our house.

Gaius at Blue Crab Boulevard points out that politicians like Keller have made a bet on defeat. Staking your political future on American failure may prove a very unwise wager.

UPDATE: Steyn’s quick take on Lawn-boy.

Gotta love Hugh Hewitt’s counter-analogy! It was spot-on. Nevertheless, I agree that “white-flag Republicans” just aren’t going to get it. Those anti-war drumbeats in the halls of Congress are drowning out the lone shouter in the corner.

But I have listened to what our most well-respected 4 star generals have to say about this matter. And Generals Abizaid, McCaffrey, and Colin Powell have all said that sending more troops into Baghdad is not the answer.

Apparently Keller is suffering from selective memory in regards to what General Abizaid has stated about the current situation in Iraq in testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee on Nov. 15, 2006.

In discussions with our commanders and Iraqi leaders it is clear that they believe Iraqi forces can take more control faster, provided we invest more manpower and resources
into the coalition military transition teams, speed the delivery of logistics and mobility enablers, and embrace an aggressive Iraqi-led effort to disarm illegal militias.
http://www.senate.gov/~armed_services/statemnt/2006/November/Abizaid%2010-15-06.pdf

How can Keller state that General Abizaid does not believe that more troops are needed when the general testified to the Senate just the opposite?

As far as the other two “Four Star Generals” Keller cites:

McCaffrey is retired and currently serves

as an Adjunct Professor at the United States Military Academy, where he had been the Bradley Professor of International Security Studies from 2001 to 2005. He is also a NBC and MSNBC military analyst as well as a consultant for BR McCaffrey Associates
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_McCaffrey

Since he retired in 1996, I doubt that he is qualified to make decisions about the Iraqi War and can be cited as a General.

The same can be said about Powell, who retired in 1993.

I can’t believe that Mr. Keller is quoting two retired generals and not including the testimony of a General who is in the position to make valid judgments about the current situation in Iraq. Just who is Keller trying to fool?

I hate to say, I voted for this embarrasment. Four different times.

Somebody help me with the math of the 17. You’re running for re-election in two years. Your constituency is more or less a 50-50 D/R split, with all the Dems against the war in Iraq, and a little less than half of the Reps.

You vote with the Dems out of political calculation, but for what? So you can lose in the primary, instead of in the general election? Or do these nitwits think that Democrats will vote for them because they voted against Bush? Can they be that stupid?

Jaibones on February 17, 2007 at 2:01 PM

Jaibones, yes, they can.

While I’m against term limits in principle, I’m more and more leaning toward limiting all of them because they simply swim in power and never know when to go back home. This is not what the fathers intended our government to be.

It’s been a long time since any represented their constituents.

But cutting your neighbor’s lawn requires a lawn mower which means increasing your carbon foot print: gas powered or electric. Better to let it grow and become part of the natural environment. And if your neighbor shoots at you, then stay away from the windows! Duck! Sing kumbayah and send over some cheese as a peace offering.

The RINOS who vote for surrender with the Democrats should be removed from office. They join with the Party of Treason in sabotaging the war and in giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

georgej on February 17, 2007 at 5:33 PM

This guy is such a fool.
So now that he may have voted in the past to either authorize deploying the lawn mower, or voted to pay for new wheels since the idiot neighbor shot a hole in one of them, he now wants to deny providing another wheel? or a mechanic to put it on?

Rather than making stupid analogies, he should be providing leadership and ensuring those currently mowing the lawn have weed killer, are able to use both hands on the steering wheel, and don’t have to mow with one wheel off.

This pretty boy should be cleaning pools somewhere.

To answer Keller’s rhetorical question:

I have to keep mowing the neighbor’s lawn as all kinds of nasty critters live in tall grass and weeds and those critters have a tendency to invade my yard and attack me and my family. I’ve been able to get rid of the critters in my yard and I have traced back them to the source, my neighbor’s yard. I can’t allow the critters to breed in my neighbor’s yard any more so I have no choice but to mow it.

It’s too bad that most of the neighborhood isn’t helping me much. A few of the neighbors are actually throwing fertilizer into my neighbor’s yard as they apparently like all the bugs that are breading there in the tall grass and weeds. I tell them to stop and try to explain why it’s a bad idea but they refuse to listen even though they and their families are being attacked by the critters too. Not only do they refuse to accept the fact that my neighbor’s yard is where the critters are breeding, they try to blame me for all the problems in the neighborhood including my neighbor’s yard. It’s very difficult to work with these people but I try to do my best.

Personally, I’d like to burn the neighbor’s yard to the bare ground and solve the problem once and for all, but the rest of the neighborhood wouldn’t like that and would do everything in their power to prevent me. Since I can’t burn it, I’ll have to keep mowing it. I’ll also have to mow other lawns that have also overgrown from time to time. Those critters are dangerous to the whole neighborhood but most of my neighbors don’t realize that. If they did, I’m sure they would help me more but so far they don’t seem to understand and have been complaining about all the noise the mower is making.

It’s a lot easier now that my neighbor has realized the problem and is helping me mow. He doesn’t have the right equipment to mow his lawn quickly so I am helping him out until he can get the proper equipment. I also have to show him how to mow without killing off large portions of his lawn as he’s new to this. He’s learning though and I’m sure that after a few more seasons he’ll get the hang of it.

It is taking a long time though and my wife keeps complaining about all the time and effort I am putting in. She would rather have me painting our house again and again to suite her constantly changing tastes with our decor so she’s mad at me that I can’t give enough ‘attention’ to the domestic situation. I try to remind her about the critters, but she has a short memory and tends to forget. I try to placate her, and sometimes it works, but she keeps complaining. Her complaints are bothersome but not nearly as much as those damn critters, so I’ll put up with her complaining.

As it is, I’ll keep mowing my neighbor’s yard and I’ll keep those damn critters out.

Does that answer your question, Mr. Keller?

Gotta love Hugh Hewitt’s counter-analogy! It was spot-on.

Actually, it was Hugh’s blog, but the post was Dean Barnett. Spot-on it was.

The thing is, to complete the analogy the neighbor house was run by the town drunk who theatened anyone who didn’t agree with him, constantly bragged about his gun collection, and beat up his family anytime he felt like it. We took over the house, got rid of the bully, started teaching the family how to feed and clothe themselves, and began mowing the lawn.
