Video: NBC’s Gregory to Bush: “Critics” say you are making up evidence to invade Iran

posted at 8:43 am on February 15, 2007 by Ian

“A lot of critics say that you are using the same quality of intelligence about Iran that you used to make the case for war in Iraq . . . and that you are doing that to make a case for war against Iran. Is that the case?”

“Critics” is a euphemism for “in my opinion.” For example, critics think David Gregory is a liberal.

Mark Finkelstein:

It goes without saying that we wouldn’t want to provoke such a person — it could harm his self-esteem. Unfortunately, President Bush doesn’t seem to have gotten the message. But thank goodness for David Gregory. As luck would have it he turned up at today’s White House press conference to convey the message to the president: stop provoking poor Mahmoud!

President Bush reiterated to Gregory what he had said earlier in the press conference: that there is no doubt that the Quds force has provided sophisticated IEDs to forces within Iraq, and that Quds is a part of the Iranian government. Whether the highest level of the Iranian government had ordered Quds to do so, the president couldn’t say.

Been a couple of weeks since Gregory’s had some headlines, fame is a tough habit to kick.

“A lot of critics say… that David Gregory should get a real job…”

E L Frederick (Sniper One) on February 15, 2007 at 8:51 AM

Self absorbed people like Gregory shouldn’t be reporters. It’s hard to be objective when all you care about is how tough (or silly) you look attempting to get a dig in at the POTUS.

I also wonder if Gregory realized that the “quality of intelligence” he’s talking about is a direct slam on Clinton and what his administration did to those agencies during his reign.

darwin on February 15, 2007 at 8:55 AM

Some say that David Gergory has an issue with beating his dog and some learned people, ones with wisdomw, have said David is an insecure little man and some have said in the past that he and Brain Williams enjoy each others company with lots of latex.

benrand on February 15, 2007 at 8:58 AM

Critics are saying that the MSM sucks hockey pucks.

flipflop on February 15, 2007 at 8:59 AM

How the hell George keeps himself from stepping down from the podium and gobsmacking these reporters is beyond me. It doesn’t matter what the man tries to do the BDS crowd is not going to listen.

Bush could hold up an apple and drop it on the ground and Gregory would be looking around trying to find David Copperfield behind the curtain.

A lot of critics say that David Gregory is a barely functioning alcoholic. Discuss.

JayHaw Phrenzie on February 15, 2007 at 9:12 AM

I think it is time for another “well there you go again” from this president.

right2bright on February 15, 2007 at 9:12 AM

David Gregory is a complete ‘weenie’…’weenie’ being a euphemism for that other word.

DoctorDentons on February 15, 2007 at 9:19 AM

A lot of critics say that you are using the same quality of intelligence about Iran that you used to make the case for war in Iraq

I didn’t know that “a lot of critics” has access to the intelligence data to make any determination as to the reliability of the data and the conclusions that data supports. Did Congress hold a commission that I am not aware of?

Romeo13 on February 15, 2007 at 9:37 AM

Anyone who actually thinks that the weapons coming from Iran do not have the full sanction of the leaders there is a useless, sniveling, appeasing tool and fool.
I’m calling for a cage-match between Snow and Gregory.

bbz123 on February 15, 2007 at 9:40 AM

Every single time I hear “A lot of critics say” or “Experts have said” or anything similer I flash back the “The Manchurain Candidate” (the Frank Sinatra version).
Their is a scene where a corrupt senator (played by James Gregory) Is talking to the secratary of defense. He holds up a sheaf of papers and attacks the secratary with them by claiming that the papers are a list of communist names affiliated with a presidentail candidtae. The rub is, the numbers keep changing, and he won’t let no one see the papers!

In others words, its a lie, and the senator was a lier. Just like Greggory.

Wyrd on February 15, 2007 at 9:42 AM

“Critics” say you are making up evidence to invade Iran.

Correct answer: “Really? Which critics are talking about?”

Bush need to put the onus of credibilty of these questions back on the questioner.

Bush trying to answer these questions seriously just lends credibility to these inane questions.

Thank God for the 21st century phampleteers. The press has no integrity. None. They spew their ‘government exposed’ BS and claim it is their duty to the American people. It is the new world phampleteers who are keeping us informed and thinking.

Integrity? None. Where is the reporter who gives the public the ‘inside’ story of what goes on in media newsrooms and boardrooms? Where is the medias ‘Watergate’ story? Where is a report of corruption in the news business? Integrity? Duty to the American people? Hogwash.

Truth? Yeah right. The only truth the media people know is the amount of their loan payment on their BMWs.

At the close of Brit Hume’s show last night he had a snippet from the press conference in which a reporter kept asking questions about the Libby trial and W kept saying, ‘I’m not going to comment on the Libby trial.’ When W called on the next reporter, said reporter commented that he might as well not ask his Libby question. W said, ‘Right. Sit down. Next.’

Pam on February 15, 2007 at 9:55 AM

After a stupid question like that I think the President just just look at him for a good, LONG quiet moment, long enough for people to get REALLY uncomfortable.

Then say, “Do you think you might want to rephrase that?”
or say “How about a REAL question now David?”
or say “David, you partisan hack, do you ever do any research at all?”
or say “And now, let’s hear from a real journalist, is Brit here? You can sit down now David, you made your insulting point.”

The President should have asked David if he had any influence in the selection of the person whom will replace him (David) at the next White House press conference.

I am not a fan of W; however, as a member of the human race, I am begging someone, somewhere to please advise Bush not to try the bantering thing at his press conferences. It’s so dreadfully cringe-inducing.

Listen George, you don’t need them to like you, you need them to respect you.

Gregory is the best the media can send to the White House? Worse even than the children they send to ask stupid questions at the Pentagon, like, “Are you going to give advance warning before you start bombing the terrorist hideout?” Gregory stands up and it’s all about Gregory, not news, just Gregory tossing a turd.
Where does this guy’s “reporting” end up? I never see a by-line. And Helen Thomas – for the “doyen” of the White House Press Corps it’s hard to believe that in decades of news reading, I never once saw her by-line. Not ever. Never saw her face on TV (ahem). Maybe Gregory is one of those who reports important events in twenty -two seconds flat so one is left with the impression that watching that news blip made one less informed than not watching it in the first place.
How is this “press” business set up? The room is filled with partisen morons who evidently hog places that people with real questions could have. Bush has nothing to lose by tossing the old lot out and inviting in serious journalists who will ask real questions about real issues. The Big Old Media Monopoly can’t scream that they’ll shut the White House out of the news if their vain poseurs get tossed out, they’re doing it already. The MSM has perverted their role to provide the people with information and transparency into an organ of propaganda solely for the Left – the opposition party. They attack the Republicans for anything, but when the Democrats are in power, they are silent. Bush is wasting his time talking to that crew. They’ll sit on the points he wants to make, then stage scenes to elicit annoyed comments. Then, that’s what they report. Toss em out, clean the White House Press Corps. We want news and real dialogue. Make them pass a competency exam as part of the application. Like, “What is the principle export of Turkmenistan?” No multiple choice, either – fill in the blank. Followed by, “Explain the significance of Thomas Jefferson’s response to John Adams regarding the key isses of the 1st Barbary War of 1801. Correct responses will include summaries of Jefferson’s and Adam’s opinions.”

VikingGoneWild on February 15, 2007 at 11:06 AM

Not sure I agree with the “logic” that because two US administrations and several world intelligence agencies got it wrong on Iraq (mainly because Saddam *wanted* his neighbors to think he had WMD) that the intelligence is also wrong on every single other issue.

Unlike Iraq, we have the physical evidence in this case. We have the sniper rifles, for example, we know they were shipped to Iran from a Belgian manufacturer. We physically captured Iranians in Iraq. There is a big difference between conclusions drawn from analysis and physical evidence. So they would have us believe that the physical evidence is somehow “misinterpreted”?

Again, either they are idiots or they think we are.

Let’s also not forget that we DID find:

a)Hundreds of Chemical Weapons, some were even used against our troops.

b)Thousands upon thousands of decalitres of bacillus anthracis and bacillus thurengenisis.

c)A few tons of yellowcake uranium that were converted into enriched uranium while supposedly “under UN seal.”

Oh, yeah, but we were wrong about those WMD’s. . . riiiight. Keep telling yourselves that MSM, just like you keep telling yourselves that we lost TET.

David Gregory is a horse’s arse. Whenever he’s here on Hot Air (I never watch NBC Nightly News), I think “I really miss David Bloom!”. He was such a great reporter. The wrong David went to Iraq to report and didn’t come home. Honestly, I know that is mean but as we remember David Bloom died while with the 3rd ID (my hubby was there as well then & had nothing but great and positive things to say about him). I think David Gregory should show some resepect for the office of the Presidency when he is asking his persnickety questions.

Damn straight they do.

They can ask horse’s asses like Gregory to leave the room. They can pull his White House Press Pass.
They can refuse his admittance to the White House.

Absodamnlutely they can do all this.

And they can (and should) pull the press passes for the reporters for both the Washington Post and the New York Times on the grounds that they have repeated violated the Espionage Act by publishing classified information that aided Al Qaeda after being repeatedly asked not to.

It is long past time to hold the PRESS responsible for it’s actions.

And in order to educate liberals like Honora about what the President can and cannot do concerning reporters….

From Drudge:

XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1999 17:09:42 ET XXXXX

FIGHT CLUB: FURIOUS CLINTON ORDERS REPORTER BANNED AFTER GRILLING!

**Exclusive** A furious President Clinton has ordered a Washington reporter banned from the White House, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, after the reporter quizzed the president during a press picnic about illegal money from China and the campaign-finance scandal!

Paul Sperry, Washington bureau chief of INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY, was thrown off the invite list at the White House after he grilled the president for more than 10 minutes about various political scandals.

“It turned into a real shout match on the south lawn,” one eyewitness told the DRUDGE REPORT.

At one point during the argument, President Clinton put his hands up to both sides of his head, wiggled them, rolled his eyes and gave Sperry a funny face.

“Make sure that guy never gets close to me again!” the president ordered one of his aides after the showdown.

White House press secretary Joe Lockhart, angry that Sperry transformed a family picnic into a confrontational press conference, told an associate that Sperry is a “Class A s**thead.”

Lockhart personally informed Sperry during a phone conversation late Monday that he would never be invited back to the White House.

“The only regret we have is inviting you — and we wont make that mistake again,” Lockhart warned Sperry.

Time to pull Gregory’s press pass and frogmarch his stinkin’ liberal butt off WH property!

It would help a lot if the press showed even a modicum of respect for President Bush and the Office of the President. He’s been straight with them, he’s bantered with them and the reaction is always the same, snarl. They don’t care, and with the quality of those people, they don’t know what respect means. They are full of themselves, thinking they’re so clever, and proud of their snarkiness, but if they were ever to trade places with Bush for one day, they’d be paralyzed with terror by noon. Writing articles does not prepare one for the realities of management and executive oversight of a massive and complex government.
