Video: Mellencamp says U.S. should have negotiated with Osama after 9/11
posted at 1:03 pm on February 14, 2007 by Allahpundit
Low-hanging fruit here, admittedly, but still tasty. He’s not a pacifist, just an appeaser with an ad contract from Chevrolet who doesn’t believe in going to war until we’ve exhausted all of our diplomatic options or skyscrapers, whichever comes first. He has the shine of enlightenment on him, too, even though he doesn’t seem to have a real firm grasp of “little brother’s” demands and is quick to disclaim knowledge sufficient to form an opinion about, um, Pearl Harbor once Charlie Rose tosses that fastball at him.
And the conspiracy theorizing at the end? Gravy. Click the image to watch.
Update: Well, give him this — at least he’s consistent.
Sounding like the knee-jerk nincompoop that he must be, Mellencamp thinks that, “Instead of worrying about somebody having a pen knife on an airplane, we should be figuring out why a brother of ours would behave so incorrectly. What have we done to make this part of the world family so hateful to us?”
That’s from one of Debbie Schlussel’s posts dated November 8, 2001.

Why? Why do we ask celebrities about ANYTHING other than the song they sang or the movie they’re in?
WHY?
Somebody explain it to me.
What OTHER profession do we routinely quiz about things of which they have exactly zero knowledge?
Asking Mellencamp about global politics is like asking a janitor about Einstein’s theory of relativity. Or asking a physicist the best way to mop a floor.
What the @!%!%$/?
Why? Why? Why?

Didn’t bin laden say that if we didn’t respond after 9/11, america was done? Even that was his estimation. Mellencamp agrees with that apparently.
This is our country is Edwards theme song too, now, isn’t it? Does that mean he agrees with letting terrorists blow up our crap too and simply respond by saying “that wasn’t cool, man. Not cool at all”
“target=new” I wish we’d become familiar with it here :)
lorien1973 on February 14, 2007 at 1:08 PM
You know what – bad analogy.
A physicist just might know how to mop a floor. Maybe the janitor took a physics class once.
But these celebrities don’t know ANYTHING about what they prattle on about – or at least not ANY more than anybody else who happens to own a television.
And frankly, they almost always know much, much less than the average television-owning-schmoe.
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?

Alice Cooper quote:
“If you‘re listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you‘re a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we‘re morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Wall Street Journal.”

But Professor, he’s exercising his first amendment right to free speech. You have no right to criticize him for his criticism of the war or Boooooosh.
And doggone it, don’t you dare not buy his CD if you disagree with his disagreement. That would be denying him his First Amendment rights or would be censorship or something bad.

Good one Chevy. First you piss me off by incessantly playing this tool’s crappy music throughout EVERY stinkin’ football game-with thinly veiled anti-American vibes in the imagery attached to the ads. Now you can’t muzzle this HAS BEEN and he’s basically a spokesman for your company. Although I’m in the market for a truck, I’d already ruled out Chevy just because of the “this is our country” crud. Now I’m concrete in my boycott of the brand.

Hey, he’s entitled to his opinion; I’ll defend his right to publicly share his opinion.
But what I do *NOT FREAKIN’ UNDERSTAND* is why we always ASK the opinion? If celebrities want to march and protest and buy full page ads in the New Yorker, fine. Stupid, laughable, but fine.
But why do we ASK THEM about this stuff?
Nobody has ever asked ME what I thought of “Jack and Diane.” I personally thought it sucked. Hard. Worst video of all time.
But since I have no basis for that opinion – other than, you know, my completely uniformed and uneducated opinion – nobody has ever shown up and asked me about it.
So what in the name of all this Holy do we ROUTINELY ask someone like Britney Spears how she feels about global warming?
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH

John Cougar Mellonhead logic defies reality at all levels.
He want’s to talk to people. News flash Johnboy, they don’t want to talk to you. They want to kill you.
His Ted “I haven’t made up my mind yet” Turner moment is truly a result of Foot-n-Mouth disease.
I wonder if beating his wife is OK, but swatting a fly is bad.

At one point, Rose said “Okay, let me make this easy for you.” That should have told John that he just wasn’t getting it. I think Rose WAS in disbelief, and even more than a little disturbed that this nimrod was actually saying all this. Pearl Harbor — John would have negotiated! Besides, it might not have really happened that way. History might not be true. What a maroon. Seriously.

A lot of you here get it;never listen to political advice from a celebrity. Personally, I never do. But as to someone such as Mellencamp, don’t know why anybody would be surprised. This guy has been packaging himself as an “shucks, I’m just a good old American country boy” for years, but his political affiliations and quotes have given lie to that image for years. Always nice to see jackasses make jackasses out of themselves, though.

Charlie Rose might be the greatest interviewers in the past 50 years. He is so good at getting down to the red meat without being confrontational. Bravo, Charlie Rose. He, in a very nice way, made Johnny Cougar examine his own worldview. In the end, I think even Johnny Cougar realized that he was in over his head.

Amazing how this cheeseball defines “far-fetched.”
Also fascinating that he said about Pearl Harbor: “I don’t have enough information.” Oh, REALLY? And you do about 9/11?
Oh, the stupidity.
Bonus question: how much would have paid for Rose to ask him a couple specific questions about Pearl Harbor? Like – where did it happen? Who attacked? What decade?
I guarantee he’d miss at least 2 out of 3. Guar-an-frickin’-tee.

Everyone knows that probably 9/10ths of all pop musicians, even the mediocre ones, are all current or former (or relapsed) druggies with some amount of organic brain damage due to their years of drug & alcohol abuse. One side effect of drug abuse brain damage is it causes them to not have the ability to fully perceive reality.
Barack Hussein Obama was a pot-head during his formative years in high school, in college, and even made a dedication to his “choom gang” (pot-pals) in his senior yearbook. He has also acknowledged hard narcotics abuse in his book of memoirs.

People stop celebratating any of these people. We celebrate them too much by posting them here so idiots like me can comment on them. When they post Michelle Malkin, on a blog, they are posting an educated intelligent woman who gets paid to say what she thinks and she would not be getting paid for her thinking if we did not give a damn what she had to say.

I hate this turd as much as the next guy but I have some info on the Couger name.
Back in the early 80′s, his first record company FORCED him to use a different name. They told him noone would listen to someone named Mellencamp. So the record company came up with the name Couger because it was “catchy”. He absolutely despised this and dropped it as fast as he could.
Although he is a complete twit, don;t hold the name thing against him.

Without using the internet, think of the following.
1. Name three anti-war entertainers.
2. Name three pro-war entertainers.
3. Quote or paraphrase something some celebrity has said that’s bashed Bush or praised Bush.
4. Now, repeat steps 1-3, and instead of a Hollywood celebrity, insert the name of a leader of the fields of mathematics, physical science, or economics.
That should pretty much boil down who the media thinks is important and who’s opinions should really be heard.
And then understand why people have lost faith in the Fourth Estate.

That was refreshing. Mellencamp has made a series of comments since right after 9/11, that were anti-American and pan-Islamist, so this is nothing new from him.

It is very refreshing to see that some (very few) entertainers at least know when to keep their mouths shut when it comes to politics.
This truly baffles me because it’s just not good business sense on their part to go off spewing nonsense, and consequently insulting a very large part of their fan base.

Mellencamp, another 80′s has-been that wants to generate controversy to increase his name recognition. That’s an old trick of self-promotion. But then again, he’s an old singer.

With that rather memorable fiacso for context, I’m not surprised by anything that Mellencamp says. These words are no exception.

Poor fluejpl, it must have been a difficult commencenment. Has anyone ever been to Seymour, IN? I had a roomie from there in college. As a working musician, I’ve had a chance to meet some of the people that impressed me as a kid. Here is a really good example of how a musician that you related to turns out to really be a huge twit, and you stop listening to them.
Kind of like your son beating up his older brother and you drop a daisy cutter on him and stop listening to his CDs and then go to jail.
Yeah, it’s like that.
Hening on February 14, 2007 at 8:33 PM
This is a brilliant plan, but I think we need to field test it… just to make sure it’s feasible. I mean, if it works it’d be great; but we’d be stupid to try it if it wouldn’t.
Hear me out, please.
Let me hit John Melloncamp in the face, while he uses nothing but diplomacy and negotiation to get me to stop.
If this small scale field test works, then I’ll credit that the larger scale plan could work as well. Reasonable test on a small scale with little of importance on the line.
If it doesn’t work… at least we’ll know it’s not really a viable strategy. And that information alone would be worthwhile to have now, wouldn’t it?
So, my proposal is that Melloncamp could be onto something, but we need to run a couple tests to verify that it has real-world potential. Certainly a valid scientific query into the viability of the “negotiation and diplomacy with 0 force or defense” strategy, right?
So lets see if he can run a single person out of their supply of the word “no” with a massive surge of diplomacy to force usage of the (presumed limited) supply… it might be do-able; and it would be a shame not to know for sure.

OH MY FRIGGIN Goodness!!!!
“I don’t know if it’s true, it was before my time”.
Dear Mr. Mellancamp,
In YOUR time, several children were beheaded in the Philipines.
In YOUR time, over 350 people were killed in Belan, MANY of them were children. Please ask the children, those that survived, what THEY did to cause these Muslim extremists to hate them so much!!
Please ask them why they’re “so far apart”. Yes, they ARE so far apart!!! THEY want to kill us and nutjobs like yourself want to talk with them!!!!
I can honestly say, that watching this video has really got me believing that these nuts out there REALLY REALLY think that their plan will work!!!

I think we’re going to need a larger sample to have a really valid experiment. So we should really book Barbara Streisand, Nancy Pelosi, Madonna, Al Gore and Sean Penn as well. And probably a few others, but that’s a good start.

Screw him, screw Charlie the nitwit Rose for foisting this moron’s political ignorance on the public, but mostly screw GM for shoving his trash down my throat.
Can’t wait to give GM’s PR department a call and let them know what kind of Toyota I’ll be buying next.
Can’t help myself; stupidity has consequences.

Yeah John, negotiate. With islamonazis. Uh huh. Didn’t Theo Van Gogh try to negotiate with a jihadi? Theo’s last words to him were “Can’t we talk about this?” Ya know what happened next John? The jihadi shot Theo and sliced his throat. So, who do you propose to negotiate for us, John. Wanna know who I’d like to see talk to these islamonazis John? You.

So the Cougar is really a pusssy?
Negotiate with homicidal scum who cut the throats of stewardesses to keep the passengers quiet?
May his A string snap and hit him in the eyeball.

I always knew there was something vaguely unsettling about him. I know I’m going to start a firestorm here, but I’ll say it anyway. I think it was the fact that he has an ad contract with Chevy. Before I go further, I want to make one thing clear: I don’t have a truck, I don’t want a truck. Despite that, however, I do know that if you want one, you don’t buy it from Chevy.

Exactly! It’s sounds a little “far-fetched” to me :-)

Golly. Just called GM to try and understand what it’s like to be them this week. First the news of Toyota’s dominance over them – pwned I believe is the expression.
Then the Mellonhead.
They gave me a “manager” name Eric Jordan; a genuine knucklehead who took the predictable “he doesn’t speak for us, it’s just a song, free speech, etc.” route, and who can blame him. But he also said some really dumb things, like “who put you up to the protest call?” and “why would I associate Mellonhead with Chevy; we just make great trucks and wanted to create an ad that tells you that”.
Really? So, with utter market dominance in the 1950s, you are now at — what? — 20% of your previous market share, despite the inherent, overwhelming advantages that you have? If your trucks are so great, why are you spending $billions on advertising every year?
And if everyone is subject to the horrors of hiring a nutty leftist who then goes out and says stupid things, why doesn’t this happen to Toyota? Or Honda?
Answer: GM is just stupid.

One thing that always made me wonder about singers like Bruce Springsteen and John Cougar Mellencamp is how oblivious they are to who they owe their success. They both experienced their greatest stardom during the “Morning in America” days of Ronald Reagan. Mellencamp sang songs that reminded people of the Heartland and the greatness of American values outside of Hollywood and Madison Avenue. Springsteen’s stuff was patriotic on its face, but anti-American underneath (at least mildly so). People liked “Little Pink Houses” and “Born in the USA” because those songs made them feel like we were still in the American experience.
Unfortunately, these “artists” actually despise the people who made them rich, famous and successful. Let’s face it, they have more in common with Al Franken and Howard Dean than they do with the farmers and servicemen they sang about.
