Video: The Police reunite
posted at 10:30 pm on February 12, 2007 by Allahpundit
I feel obliged to post this after pimping it last month. As previously reported, it’s not a one-shot deal: they announced today they’re touring come May.
Anyone here going to go? I was leaning towards yes during the first 90 seconds of this, but then the little “jazz odyssey” part gave me cold feet.
Go on. Talk me into it.
Exit question numbers: 173 and £97 million.

How expensive are the tickets? Will I have to yell Shut up and sing, damn it! ?
StuLongIsland on February 12, 2007 at 10:42 PM
Taking bets on if they will sing Iranians to the lyrics tweeked from Russians?

MirCat on February 12, 2007 at 10:47 PM
Ha. I think you’re more likely to get the unaltered version preceded by a speech about how “Russians” doesn’t really mean Russians, it means the Other whom we define ourselves apart from because we’re afraid to love zzzzzzzzz.
Allahpundit on February 12, 2007 at 10:49 PM
Trying to look up the lyrics, I stumbled on this About proxy war type thing

Save your money for Diamond Dave.

They look great and sound great. It’s good to see them back.
Glynn on February 12, 2007 at 10:54 PM
Dang it, I gotta start refreashing before posting, so I can get it all in at once :)
You probably right on this, but I think at least once he’ll slip in “Mr. Bush” in place of “Mr. Reagan.”

MirCat on February 12, 2007 at 10:54 PM
They certainly won’t work the Iranians into that song. Just try rhyming with “Ahmadinejad.”

Squee!
Typewriter King on February 12, 2007 at 11:08 PM
Eddie Murphy did it better…
Besides, I’m not paying $100+ per ticket to see some cover band. At least Sabbath and KISS had new material when they reunited.

Why yes! A career at Disney does look like a great idea.

Oh, the Police! Yes, they’re definitely worth a second look. I’m thinking “U2″ reunion in another 10 – 15 years. Of course, unlike the Police, they managed to keep their heads together and produce great music.
thedecider on February 12, 2007 at 11:12 PM
“Russians” is not a Police song.
It’s on Sting’s post-Police album
“Dream of the Blue Turtles”
De doo doo doo. De da da da.

And Krushchev was a walk in the park? Hehe, actually it would be a rather easy thing to change up. All but,
I may just try to get it circulating like a parody and under cut him!! Ah, who am I kidding . . he’d still make more money off of it than I ever could.

Copeland still has it.

We’re not supposed to talk about a possible U2 breakup, we’re supposed to deny that rumor oxygen.
Typewriter King on February 12, 2007 at 11:31 PM
Is he the drummer? If so, hell yes, he’s got it.
I was ten when they broke up last time, so they never really registered with me till later, when I became a Sting fan.
That’s just a little JT influence. He knows he can’t do that to every freakin’ song. C’mon, AP, you know you want to. I can’t believe Sting still sounds that good at his age, when Billy–yes, all right, I admit it–really is losing the edge a bit. Put it this way–I’ve seen Billy Joel in concert five times and I don’t have tickets for this tour because I’m afraid of it denting my memories. Don Henley’s little homage to the Chicks last night took away most of whatever enthusiasm I had for the Eagles’ new stuff.
This, though, I’m going to see. Sting looks better than Henley and sounds better than Joel and I have no preconceptions about the band as a whole … hell, they look a lot better now than they did as dorky 80s rockers.
Allah, Madison Square presales begin tomorrow at noon. I’ll go and hold your hand through the jazz riffs if you want.
Anwyn on February 12, 2007 at 11:34 PM
Just think what the concerts would be like if Elvis where still alive. A lot of handicapped ramps there. And on that note, I’m still amazed that any of the Stones are still alive.
R D on February 12, 2007 at 11:41 PM
Still the best Police song ever.
forged rite on February 12, 2007 at 11:42 PM
I agree. I thought Bono’s activism might do them in but he’s kept such a cool head about it. A model for others in the public eye (*cough*…Sean Penn…*cough*)
thedecider on February 12, 2007 at 11:48 PM
This comes in a close second though.
forged rite on February 12, 2007 at 11:50 PM
Why would I want to go to a Police concert. The last thing I want to be reminded of is how old I’ve become.

Love the Police…but think the Genesis reunion is a much better bet. Genesis puts (or put) on the second best live shows I’ve ever seen…Queen was #1 live.
JetBoy on February 12, 2007 at 11:54 PM
How much do they pay you for those advertising videos smack in the middle of your editiorial content? They really piss me off. Scrolling past the diggity thing was already irritating, but sheesh!
They’re deliberately piggy backing on the real videos you provide, hoping your readers will mistakenly think they’re being offered up by you — and as far as I’m concerned you’re enabling the manipulation. Holy shades of the encroaching mainstream!

They’re coming to Dallas!
They’re coming to Dallas!

I’m gettin’ tickets!

It should be a rite of passage for bands in the West to play in Saudi Arabia and Iran. The ones who make their hajj and return alive will have earned a measure of respect–for their bodyguards.
Kralizec on February 13, 2007 at 12:54 AM
Even the audio sounded good on this. That video must have been the reason I put a subwoofer on this computer.
Love Copeland.
CanaryinaCoalMine on February 13, 2007 at 1:46 AM
There should be a Police/Def Leppard/Journey/STYX/DIO tour.
That would be cool. If I didn’t have a high and tight, I’d feather my hair and wear bandanas right now. {pumping fist}

Sting is like Prince and George Micheal – once in a while flashes of brilliance, but you have to sit through hours of sludge for those moments. At least the Police are playing together like a real band (rare these days) with a lot of class and energy, but hey, Roxanne is one of there most boring songs. Every Little Thing is about all I’d want to hear at a concert.
Halley on February 13, 2007 at 1:56 AM
Boys and Girls…… relax.
For those of us who remember the first albums, they were a bright shinning day with all the punk junk being thrusted into the market.
For everyone’s political agendas, yes even ours, the members of the “Police” were actually quite tame…. yes, Sting was a stand out, but at his core, he was, and still is, a musician.
Over the years, I have found much pleasure in his different approaches, working with different artists…
I give them credit…. it could have gone horriblry wrong…. Does anyone remember Jeff Beck’s attempt at a come back, for God’s sakes, he went deaf at the sound check for the first concert……..
Why not say, “Spot on Boys…. nice to hear you make an attempt…..”, or do you want them to fail, just to fail.
Not I. I know I don’t have that much musical tallent in my body, even though I can carry a tune. But, I will not take away thiers. Go boys, go…
I will give anyone a second, third, even an everlasting attempt at glory, as long as in the final end, it is real, comes from the soul, …….. and sounds good.
It doesn’t mean I will buy anymore CD’s, but I will give them OK, and thank them for thier efforts…….
Spot On, Gents, thanks for the comeback. Maybe you can give influence to some of the other recording artists of the day……..
PinkyBigglesworth on February 13, 2007 at 2:22 AM
Meh!
I saw them play (back in the day).
Sting looks as smug as ever…
uptight on February 13, 2007 at 2:46 AM
225.00 for good seats. 50.00 for lawn seats. Sorry, saving my money for Rush (the band). Much better show, new music, a hell of a lot cheaper.
rotorhead on February 13, 2007 at 2:47 AM
I like the Police. But last time I paid to get twice nearly trampled in a stinking human animal panic was for the Stones at Candlestick. Like I say, last time.
laelaps on February 13, 2007 at 4:24 AM
Well, I can’t go to NY, but since I live in Buffalo I can go see the Toronto show. Hmm… Now who can I get to babysit the kids?
wearyman on February 13, 2007 at 8:38 AM
I saw the police on the Synchronicity tour. I’ve always thought Sting was a great song writer. I liked to go, but I’m sure tickets will be like $100 a pop. I think I paid $40 for last Police concert ticket. I think its funny how all these old rockers are “reuniting” all of a sudden.
vcferlita on February 13, 2007 at 8:45 AM
I saw them on the Synchronicity tour as well. it was great! Do you remember that wild jacket Sting wore? That torn up thing? I might have to road trip to Dallas to see them.
pullingmyhairout on February 13, 2007 at 9:31 AM
I spoke with a buddy of mine yesterday about the pricing on this (he’s a producer in LA). Apparently they’re planning to keep the ticket prices down – $30 or so – best buy is going to foot the bill on a lot of it.
It’s the freakin police, Allah! It’ll be a great show.

I’ll stick to listening to my pristine LP’s, thank you very much.
Those songs bring back many fond memories, of which I prefer to not distort.

LOL!!!!!
The Ugly American on February 13, 2007 at 3:12 PM
Sure, but why is Lorne Michaels playing the guitar for The Police in that video?
As for Copeland, I’m with Phil Collins when he said that Copeland was one of the best drummers in the world, it was just a shame that Copeland thought so too.
Fred on February 13, 2007 at 3:42 PM
Go on. Talk me into it.
Two words: Stewart F-ing Copeland.
spmat on February 13, 2007 at 7:48 PM
AP,
Thanks for posting the vid. I just missed it when it aired live. The Police are one of my all time favs. They sounded awesome. If they come to Nashville, Im there.
realVerse on February 13, 2007 at 10:45 PM
For the record – I was wrong about this.
I, and my friend in LA, are dining on crow (along with canary and coal).
$90 / $240 – oof.
