Video: Obama says lives of troops killed in Iraq were “wasted”

posted at 3:19 pm on February 12, 2007 by Allahpundit

Now we know for sure he’s not the messiah. The messiah doesn’t make mistakes.

Of course he thinks their lives were wasted. Everyone on the anti-war side does; that’s one of the reasons they want to end the war. But they can’t say that because it dishonors the dead so they’re forced into rhetorical pretzels like the one Pelosi tied herself into a few weeks ago with Diane Sawyer. Army Lawyer summed up her position at the time thusly: “They didn’t die for nothing, they died for something stupid.”

Submitted for your disapproval, then: Obama on the campaign trail yesterday in Iowa…

…versus Pelosi on GMA on January 19th. Click the image to watch; the relevant segment is at 4:20.

Update: Jim Treacher wonders if Obama is the Shane McMahon of American politics.

…a little tarnish developing on the veneer?

Exactly. Maybe this is a signal that the Obamas of the world are finally coming around to the Feingold position, i.e., being honest about what you really think about the war. Frankly, if you’re against the war, you should be trumpeting “the troops lives have been wasted, and anymore troops that die in Iraq will have died for nothing” because, frankly, it’s a compelling case for withdrawal.

Enrique on February 12, 2007 at 3:27 PM

Unbelievable but not unexpected.

shooten on February 12, 2007 at 3:28 PM

That’s red meat for the Dems. I think it’s naive to call it a gaffe.

SWLiP on February 12, 2007 at 3:29 PM

So I’ve been doing a little research, and Mordechai Kedar describes al Buraq, Mohammed’s flying steed (non-stop service to Jerusalem!), as “a magical horse with the head of a woman, wings of an eagle, the tail of a peacock, and hoofs reaching to the horizon.”

If “Barak” is indeed derived from “al Buraq,” that’s one hell of an appropriate name.

Blacklake on February 12, 2007 at 3:32 PM

He’s playing to the base…we’re waging the primary here, not the general. He’ll take a wild swerve to the center if he gets the nomination.

jdpaz on February 12, 2007 at 3:34 PM

This is what happens when your ego takes over your life. You become delusional and unrealistic. I think Obama’s little flirtation with national office will be very, very , very shortlived and potentially incredibly embarrassing. Popcorn anyone?

labwrs on February 12, 2007 at 3:36 PM

Why is it that my state is represented by a slew of pud-knockers?

yo on February 12, 2007 at 3:38 PM

Wow, that is just so awesome and refreshing that he was able to admit that he felt this way. It is tryly an honor to just hear him speak.

tomas on February 12, 2007 at 3:38 PM

They are against the war, but they support wasting our troops.

What does this clown Obama know about waging a war anyway? Oh, my bad, forgot he doesn’t want to wage a war, he wants us to turn tail and run. OK …. he’s qulaified.

fogw on February 12, 2007 at 3:38 PM

I do not believe that his statement was a gaffe, the statement refects his true views.

This gives you an example of what we can expect from him, and the Left.

The Republicans need to give ground and side with those who want to secure or borders, and not pander to the wealth and corporate interests if they want to win in 2008. If they don’t you are looking at what we are likely to get stuck with: weakness and ignorance.

omegaram on February 12, 2007 at 3:39 PM

I guess you just swift boated yourself oh great one.

tomas on February 12, 2007 at 3:40 PM

I think AP is using “gaffe” in the Kinsleyan sense of the word.

Slublog on February 12, 2007 at 3:40 PM

Here’s the thing, I don’t think the left cares about their lives. I think they use that excuse as a shield for what they really want. When Lynn Cheney asked Wolf Blitzer “Do you want us to win” he just really couldn’t answer it. None of them will answer it because the answer would be NO. They have never wanted us to win.

Glynn on February 12, 2007 at 3:41 PM

BelchSpeak on February 12, 2007 at 3:48 PM

That’s red meat for the Dems. I think it’s naive to call it a gaffe.

Yaup.

If you do think the war should have “never been authorized” and “never been waged” it follows that the lives of those lost were “wasted.”

I couldn’t disagree more strongly, but this will play very, very well with the constituency he’s currently courting.

Osama has said our troops are being wasted. Zawahiri has said it as well. Just where is Obama getting his talking points?

Palomino!

see-dubya on February 12, 2007 at 3:59 PM

What Obama said was more than a gaffe or naive. It was shameful and ugly.He is appealing to the special interest groups while depending on the MSM to take care of general public indoctrination.
I believe thats going to be unfortunate for him as long as conservatives have video like this. We’ve got months and months to watch him make a fool out of himself.Thats a lot of popcorn.

spazzmomma on February 12, 2007 at 4:01 PM

Whelp, he just lost my vote. HA!

Savage on February 12, 2007 at 4:03 PM

Hillary!, Edwards, and Obama, are engaging in a continual game of leap frog over one another to get farther and farther to the left. We can only hope that they get themselves so far out into McGovernland that by the general election they’ll fare as well as Fightin’ George did back in 1972.

Dudley Smith on February 12, 2007 at 4:04 PM

So did anyone else happen to notice the insurgent war pRon video posted there as well? Yannow…the same one bein’ pimped on the front page of Michael Moore’s website?

Gee, thanks ABC News. Like Michael Moore, I do so enjoy hearing Abdul Mohammed sing with glee as our troops plummet to a fiery death.

Anything to get rid of that gawd-awful BushCo.

Griz on February 12, 2007 at 4:27 PM

Wasted lives? More than five times as many Americans, including children, were killed in drunk driving accidents just in 2005 than volunteers in the military have been killed in the Iraq war since it started.

But since that can’t be blamed on Booosh! I guess it doesn’t count.

Laura on February 12, 2007 at 4:30 PM

Of course the Left thinks American lives lost in Iraq were wasted, but then they thought they were wasted when they joined the military.

Heck, it’s only the second day and the Obama meteor has crested is now descending. It will hit the Earth and be gone long before the election.

Tantor on February 12, 2007 at 4:47 PM

I ain’t votin’ for anyone named Obama anyways.

More like tofu. For which, with all due respect, I submit the following accompanying graphic.

Kid from Brooklyn on February 12, 2007 at 5:03 PM

The anti-war crowd has the Dems by the gumballs. Billery can play the center-right all she wants but it isn’t going to fly. 08 is going to be 68 on steroids.

Next is the Country Joe and the Fish revival, Arlo, and Woodstock for Diversity. Peace. Love. Jail the nazis.

Limerick on February 12, 2007 at 5:04 PM

I think it’s still fair to call this a gaffe, insofar as Obama will inadvertently irk those who contort themselves into the Pelosi-style bundle of nuances in order to nominally support the troops while blasting everything they do. They’ll be quick to look past it of course, but I think this insufficiently nuanced rhetoric from Obama is a combination of his being a relative newbie to the game of illogic as practiced on the national stage and of the kid gloves with which the press has handled him to date.

He’s thus far unsullied by any meaningful rebuke by press or opponent, so he’s likely starting to feel that whenever he opens his mouth, he automatically disgorges little piles of pure and unassailable liberal sputum for his legions to fawn over. Whenever he gets his first real bashing, whether at the hands of the Clintonistas or the media, we might expect him to suddenly find a more measured diplomacy.

Until then, I’m with labwrs. Pass the popcorn.

Suddenly NBC’s virulent anti-Americanism is explained.

But seriously, much as I despise his statement and anybody who believes it, we’re better off when they get cocky or sloppy enough to say what they really believe instead of lying to fool people. It’ll make it that much harder for the eventual Dhimmicratic nominee to sell that fake to the center.

We’re going to hear worse than this in terms of anti-troop rhetoric before the smoke clears. This campaign season is going to get really ugly.

So will the media now interview Gold Star Moms with moral authority who support the war and get their views on Obama’s remark???

Doubt it.

Tony737 on February 12, 2007 at 5:49 PM

I’m with Flip on this completely.

Obama has been receiving so much special treatment from everyone that he is starting to believe his own press. The Clintons are going to hand him his head, gigantic Dumbo ears and all. Pass the popcorn and get comfortable, this is going to be very entertaining to watch.

UnEasyRider on February 12, 2007 at 5:51 PM

Wow, at the rate he and his wife are stepping in it these days the Vast Rightwing Conspiracy won’t have to do anything to thwart the Rock Star’s rise to greatness. He’s efficiently showing his lack of presidentiality all by himself. ‘Course, I guess that means the moonbat leftists will be all the more enthralled…

NTWR on February 12, 2007 at 6:16 PM

I’m not sure exactly how ol’ Obama can consider the lives of more than 3,000 of our fallen servicemembers to have been “wasted.”

Think about it from his perspective as a donk:

If we somehow lose the war on the battlefield, or run away from the fight like cowards, then those lost lives are priceless in the donks’ ability to say, “See – we told you so!” as a campaign slogan in 2008. By the donks’ own logic from the 2006 election, more doom & gloom and more defeat & retreat = more donks in Congress and a donk in the White House.

That’s a “win” for the donks, not a “waste.”

Accordingly, far from being upset by 3,000+ “wasted” deaths, the donks should be grateful for them – indeed, should be hoping for many, many more such deaths between now and November, 2008.

Indeed, the only way that someone like Osa – I mean, Obama (you can see how easy it is to confuse the two) can really see those deaths as “wasted” would be if we were to somehow win in Iraq: because that might benefit the Republicans in the next election, meaning less donkey party political power – which is the only standard they have to measure “victory” or “defeat.”

So yeah, it’s a goof on Obama’s part, but not in the way one would at first think. If he were intellectually honest, he should hire that college professor who called for “A million Mogadishus” as his campaign manager, but it’s too late now – by making such an elementary mistake, he’s shown that he’s mortal.

Which means that we’ll still have to wait around for the Second Coming, after all. Aw, crap.

This is a pretty funny Obama/Hillary spoof by Mad TV.

“Barack can sing… he can do anything!!!”

NTWR on February 12, 2007 at 7:32 PM

“He’s playing to the base.”

He is also playing to his Al Qaeda “base,” too.

On tonight’s News Hour, NOT A SINGLE WORD ABOUT THIS INCIDENT!

Nothing, Nada, Zippo.

He IS typical of today’s modern Democrat. He just pandered to the brownshirt faction. Next he’ll try to pander to veterans. But he’s just swiftboated himself.

This is nothing new, Obama is throwing off the “centrist” mask. Back when he was campaigning for the Senate it was clear he was on the hard left. But he tried to mask it and got called out on it.

Ripclawe on February 12, 2007 at 7:58 PM

Counter-Obamans need to start showing up at his rallies waving white flags.

And chanting: “Wasted! Wasted!! Wasted!!!

In memory of his cokie college daze, and to mock his supine surrenderology.

This delusional featherweight will only endanger our nation’s future with his fatal lack of understanding of the free world’s current stuggle against Resurgent Islamic Imperialism (killing infidels since 622 A.D.), and he should be sent back to practice his brand of incompetency on the Senate where it belongs.

profitsbeard on February 12, 2007 at 8:35 PM

On Nightline tonight the repeated that Obama is a CENTERIST while Hellary is going “to the left.”

What a complete and utter crock!

The refusal to cover his speech where he says that the men and women who died in our service in Iraq wasted their lives is being blackholed by the MSM.

Any members of the military reading Hot Air have to inform those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan that Obama doesn’t give 2 cents about them that he considers them luzers like Kerry does.

georgej on February 13, 2007 at 12:29 AM

Of course the Blinker of the House would feign patriotism even though she despises American military power. What do you expect from San Francisco Values Nancy? Me? I expect nothing of any value whatsoever. She doesn’t speak for me.

thedecider on February 13, 2007 at 12:59 AM

These comments by Obama are an insult to the American military. This disqualifies Obama, in my view, from being sanely considered for President. That is above and beyond Obama’s being a socialist and pacifist whose policies would be bad for America.

Phil Byler on February 13, 2007 at 8:00 AM

This is why we do not see Hillary in anything but a very controlled situation (couldn’t spell enviornment correctly). She won’t make these gaffs till later in the campaign when she is forced out.
