24, 1 – 3pm: Jack-to-Jack Open Thread

The following takes place between the hours of 1pm and 3pm:

Allah tipped me off to this article in the New Yorker about 24:

At other moments, the discussion was more strained. Finnegan told the producers that “24,” by suggesting that the U.S. government perpetrates myriad forms of torture, hurts the country’s image internationally. Finnegan, who is a lawyer, has for a number of years taught a course on the laws of war to West Point seniors—cadets who would soon be commanders in the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. He always tries, he said, to get his students to sort out not just what is legal but what is right. However, it had become increasingly hard to convince some cadets that America had to respect the rule of law and human rights, even when terrorists did not. One reason for the growing resistance, he suggested, was misperceptions spread by “24,” which was exceptionally popular with his students. As he told me, “The kids see it, and say, ‘If torture is wrong, what about “24”?’ ” He continued, “The disturbing thing is that although torture may cause Jack Bauer some angst, it is always the patriotic thing to do.”

I was against the torure before I was for it.

Ringmaster on February 12, 2007 at 7:57 PM

whoa! Can’t believe the blonde chick just shot McCarthy dead!
Looks like she’s wearing diapers and ready to drive 900 miles to get her money!

Jen the Neocon on February 12, 2007 at 8:14 PM

$7 million will do that to a bubble-headed bleach blonde.

The bunker is about to go up in flames.

steveegg on February 12, 2007 at 8:16 PM

She’s driving the car with one hand on the wheel and a gun in the other. He can’t take her?

Ian on February 12, 2007 at 8:17 PM

He’s a technoweenie, not a red shirt.

steveegg on February 12, 2007 at 8:23 PM

Or as wyatt earp said on the Blogs4Bauer live thread, “Morris is used to getting his as kicked by Chloe….”

steveegg on February 12, 2007 at 8:26 PM

If Jack shows up at CTU, does Josh grab a gun and try to avenge dear old Dad in a blaze of glory?

flip on February 12, 2007 at 8:26 PM

Sorry, this President does not have gravitas.

jatfla on February 12, 2007 at 8:33 PM

Well that death was inevitable.

She watched the terrorists set off a nuclear weapon and torture a guy with a drill and thinks they’re just going to let her go?

Slublog on February 12, 2007 at 8:37 PM

Not only watertubbing, but the electric drill!
And the way those IslamoNazi whiners go on about the “torture” at Gitmo…

Jen the Neocon on February 12, 2007 at 8:38 PM

Expect CAIR to be howling tomorrow.

steveegg on February 12, 2007 at 8:41 PM

I wonder if he did a fake program so that the nukes will not actually arm but dud out. That dude is brilliant and I would not be surprised if he did that.

zerodamage on February 12, 2007 at 8:48 PM

JUST SMASH IT JACK!! It needs to fire off the Plutonium to go boom.

Ringmaster on February 12, 2007 at 8:48 PM

Fayed the Martian in about 10 minutes -

“Where’s the ka-boom? There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering ka-boom.”

steveegg on February 12, 2007 at 8:50 PM

Is that weasel in the White House bunker hinting at assassination?

nailinmyeye on February 12, 2007 at 8:53 PM

Is that weasel in the White House bunker hinting at assassination?

nailinmyeye on February 12, 2007 at 8:53 PM

I’d say it’s a bit more than just a hint.

steveegg on February 12, 2007 at 8:55 PM

WTF happened to Prison Break tonight?!

RightWinged on February 12, 2007 at 8:56 PM

WTF happened to Prison Break tonight?!

RightWinged on February 12, 2007 at 8:56 PM

We needed another hour of Jack killing terrorists to get the kill-o-meter rolling.

steveegg on February 12, 2007 at 8:57 PM

I guess I was wrong. He actually made the devise. What a weasly little bas-tard.

zerodamage on February 12, 2007 at 8:59 PM

Every time an American does what a terorists asks, he winds up dead. They got at least one thing right.

Valiant on February 12, 2007 at 8:59 PM

Not to “hijack” the thread or anything, but Amanda has apparently bid adeiu to the Edwards Blog. Let’s hope she doesn’t let the delete key hit her on the way out.

BORIS THAT SNEAKING $^@#&ING RUSSIAN!!!

Ringmaster on February 12, 2007 at 9:02 PM

It’s sweeps. The only guaranteed way to win both the 8:00 and the 9:00 hour is a double dose of smacking Muslim terrorists around.

flip on February 12, 2007 at 9:03 PM

Jack’s at home base – the Josh vengeance scenario is in play.

flip on February 12, 2007 at 9:08 PM

Sooo…who will take out Papa Bauer? Any bets?

jatfla on February 12, 2007 at 9:12 PM

Jack, of course.

steveegg on February 12, 2007 at 9:13 PM

Jack’s father is evil.

I half expect him to pull off a mask and be revealed as Nina Myers.

Slublog on February 12, 2007 at 9:13 PM

Jack and Nina are scret brother and sister….. ewewwwwww…

Ringmaster on February 12, 2007 at 9:16 PM

And the other half is expecting Hiliary behind that mask?

steveegg on February 12, 2007 at 9:16 PM

Oh…I miss Nina!! She and Jack had sparks!! Is she dead?

jatfla on February 12, 2007 at 9:16 PM

I half expect him to pull off a mask and be revealed as Nina Myers.

That was good

nailinmyeye on February 12, 2007 at 9:19 PM

Bones says, “She’s dead, Jim.”

steveegg on February 12, 2007 at 9:22 PM

Good grief, this is convoluted. An overthrow of a Presidency and a *known terrorist* supporting the Administration!

jatfla on February 12, 2007 at 9:25 PM

Anybody else thinking about Obama and what John Howard said he would be like as president?

Jen the Neocon on February 12, 2007 at 9:27 PM

This whole assassination/definitive action story line is lame. Is Lennox really going to go along with this?

The whole cabinet removing the pres. was played out in…was it season 2? So, now the president’s own people have to conspire to kill him? Come on.

nailinmyeye on February 12, 2007 at 9:28 PM

That was season 2 (concluded last week on A&E).

steveegg on February 12, 2007 at 9:32 PM

Here’s a question – assuming Lennox and Reed are correct and their “decisive action” prevents one or more nukes from going off, ignoring the moral implications of what they’re plotting, is it a net strategic win for the country or do the destabilizing effects of a Presidential assassination ultimately offset the short-term win?

flip on February 12, 2007 at 9:32 PM

its all George Mason from beyond the grave

blatantblue on February 12, 2007 at 9:37 PM

forget what i said

its global warming

blatantblue on February 12, 2007 at 9:42 PM

Is Jack going to check her phone??

jatfla on February 12, 2007 at 9:47 PM

Err. Once again, it’s the Arabs who AREN’T the real terrorists. Sigh.

Ian on February 12, 2007 at 9:48 PM

Looks like CAIR got to them again, doesn’t it?

Jen the Neocon on February 12, 2007 at 9:49 PM

Indeed. We already had eastern European terrorists!

Ian on February 12, 2007 at 9:51 PM

Oh and Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal is Fox’s 4th largest stockholder.

Jen the Neocon on February 12, 2007 at 9:51 PM

Looks like Fox 5 News at 10 is going to be “torturing” cast members with little electro-shocks or something.

flip on February 12, 2007 at 9:52 PM

Stop watching this propoganda arm of the Democratic party. The writers obviously can’t think of anything new or exciting.

James on February 12, 2007 at 9:52 PM

Well, so far I was right about Jack’s Dad being the personification of ‘Captain Dudley Smith” eeeeevil, and the Ally McBeal Dweeb and his Bad Haircut Guy aide conspiring to off the Prez.

It sure is a shame that CTU can’t tap into cell phone calls within the facility and the Old EOB. They’d wrap it all up within an hour.

Jack.

Jack Deth on February 12, 2007 at 9:52 PM

I knew it.

Ian on February 12, 2007 at 9:56 PM

jacks Alive….suprise :)

ekuspa40 on February 12, 2007 at 9:58 PM

I’ll be here next week to watch the Dad get his!!!!

jatfla on February 12, 2007 at 10:00 PM

Okay…a little on the mellow side….but okay.

Coronagold on February 12, 2007 at 10:00 PM

They finally let Milo out of CTU, and the boy’s got skills.

Slublog on February 12, 2007 at 10:01 PM

Milo knows how to blow up his arsenal and run. I wouldn’t exactly call those skills :-)

steveegg on February 12, 2007 at 10:05 PM

Hi, slublog:

Milo doesn’t have Mad Crazy Skills, but I did like the grenade in the van’s armory trick.

Jack.

Jack Deth on February 12, 2007 at 10:05 PM

He got to blow stuff up. That’s enough for me.

Man, I wish I had a job where I could play with grenades.

Slublog on February 12, 2007 at 10:08 PM

That was a pretty stupid waste. He should have rolled them under the van at the shooters; take a couple with him, detonate the rest. I can’t believe they killed Curtis off…he wouldn’t have started a car chase in a frigging ice cream truck.

austinnelly on February 12, 2007 at 10:09 PM

Okay now people, get ready for American Idol.

bloggless on February 12, 2007 at 10:10 PM

That article in the New yorker; I’d be less worried about the ideas that Jack Bauer gives to young soldiers than the ideas Democrats get from how to deal with a President they don’t like.

austinnelly on February 12, 2007 at 10:12 PM

meh.

jummy on February 12, 2007 at 10:18 PM

Out of curiosity … why can CTU seem to identify and record every single cell phone call …. except for those made right in CTU? Or in the White House?

And why has no one noticed that anybody on the “tac team” who goes anywhere with Jack ends up dead?

Has there ever been a season where they didn’t let one of the main bad guys into CTU itself?

All I know for sure is that this is a stupid, silly, horribly written show.

And I can’t wait until next week.

Professor Blather on February 12, 2007 at 10:28 PM

milo pulled a good move. concealed himself pretty well with the explosion. taking the time to chuck all the grenades that probably wouldnt kill all of them would be a waste of time. much better off blowin the bitch and getting a good jump on the russian turkeys

blatantblue on February 12, 2007 at 10:29 PM

*sigh* OK..so I DONT have any integrity..after posting last week I was finished with JB..I watched.I couldnt help myself. I blame globalwarming.
But I for one do NOT think Curtis is DEAD..he was shot in the shoulder by JB and was NEVER said to be dead..not once..just “shot”. I expect Curtis to be coming back!
I predict the neoconguy will NOT be a conspirator. I predict he is a REAL Patriot and is going to stand by his President even THO he disagrees with him. I think he is setting up boyspy to find out who the REAL conspirators are..and I bet the Pres and he are in on this together! Just my 5cents (too many predictions for just two cents).

labwrs on February 12, 2007 at 10:36 PM

Okay, riddle me this, true believers….

How the HELL did Morris go back to work after having a drill pushed into his shoulder blade and getting his ass kicked for ten minutes?

Mortis on February 12, 2007 at 10:41 PM

Yes….I would have been dead from fear and shock!!

Thank you Professor. Me too. :~)

jatfla on February 12, 2007 at 10:45 PM

Hi, Professor Blather:

I’d thought about Jack’s Tac Team’s Batting Average tonight.

Jack’s Brother’s thugs murder one team two weeks ago. Another gets blow’d up tonight… Not a great average.

Already mentioned CTU’s inability to tap into internal CTU/OEB/White House cell calls.

Anyone elso notice that the streets and Interstates around LA were pretty free of congestion and/or that there were no cars stopped due to EMP?

Jack.

Jack Deth on February 12, 2007 at 10:48 PM

a tac nuke is gonna release EMP all over LA?

im not doubtin just wondering

blatantblue on February 12, 2007 at 10:50 PM

Sooo…who will take out Papa Bauer? Any bets?

My guess is Josh’s Mom, jatfla.

You can’t rule out the PO’ed Mom factor when it comes to vengeance. Especially after Papa Bauer admitted to killing Jack’s brother.

Second choice would be Josh.

Jack.

Jack Deth on February 12, 2007 at 11:08 PM

The President said, “Just one more nuke goes off – we’re talking about war…”

Uhh, wouldn’t we be talking about that after the first one? I think we would. 12,000 dead! Helloooo!?!

CP on February 12, 2007 at 11:29 PM

Johnny Sutton is prepairing the paper work to arrest Jack and the boys for violating the civil rights of the terroists in their pursuit of exploding an atomic bomb for “religious” reasons….. our country is safer now.

It’s not a “war”, it’s a “court procedure”, lawyer me up Johnny……. tricks, procedures, appeals…. and don’t forget, Spin and Nuance…

PinkyBigglesworth on February 13, 2007 at 12:01 AM

Damn Soviets!! I knew it. This whole collapse of the iron curtain was nonsense. They are controlling those poor jihadis. Why didn’t we see it all along.

Rick on February 13, 2007 at 12:18 AM

“The disturbing thing is that although torture may cause Jack Bauer some angst, it is always the patriotic thing to do.”

The disturbing thing is that, even when torture is the prudent thing to do, it may cause Jack Bauer some anxiety.

Kralizec on February 13, 2007 at 12:58 AM

All I know for sure is that this is a stupid, silly, horribly written show.

And I can’t wait until next week.

Professor Blather on February 12, 2007 at 10:28 PM

Amen, can I get a hallelujah?

Vinnie on February 13, 2007 at 1:02 AM

Now if I could just see the preview for next week. Global in BC decided to show previews for Heros and House instead of 24.

rhuppertz on February 13, 2007 at 1:11 AM

This is getting as lame as an old B x W “Batman” serial from the 1940’s that I saw on silent subtitled Super 8 when I got my first movie projector.

Plot holes you could drive Al Gore’s global ego through and inconsistencies the size of Bill Clinton’s Goodwill-donated boxer’s.

Sutherland’s skill is the only thing that keeps this spit and baling wire mess together.

They need a fresh screenwriter.

Call me.

(I can mix Nietzsche with Raymond Chandler, metaphorically, and throw in some Sappho for sex appeal, with a leavening of John “Greenmantle” Buchan for the traditionalists.)

The show’s deus ex machinas are starting to strip their tremendously over-taxed ’squirm’ gears.

Nevertheless, like Professor Blather and Vinnie, I’ll be there next week, a glutton for punishment.

(SP/EFX note: that drill bit looked a little big…)

profitsbeard on February 13, 2007 at 2:39 AM

Ok so we have Jack’s dad who is a well known Democrat rich dude who is involved with a shady Russian fascist who is supplying Iranian Islamofascists with nuclear arms to kill Americans and in a side story the well known Democrat rich dude is involved in a plot to possibly kill his own parties President. Totally unbelievable, Does George Soros even have a son?

Buzzy on February 13, 2007 at 9:11 AM

I wouldn’t rule out josh having a hand in the eventual demise of his grandfather. He is, after all…….rumored…..Jack’s son so one could expect a chip off the old block. But I pity him if the rumors are true about this, members of Jack’s family traditionally don’t fare too well. :)

dustoffmom on February 13, 2007 at 9:37 AM

I am so glad I quit watching this show this year after hour 3 of prmier. Judging by the comments here it has gotten really lame. I half expect the bad guy to wind up being Bart Simpson with a healthy dose of Homer thrown in as the brains behind it all.

LakeRuins on February 13, 2007 at 9:53 AM

(SP/EFX note: that drill bit looked a little big…)

Not the size that matters man. Just what you do with it.

Come on, somebody had to say it.

austinnelly on February 13, 2007 at 11:15 AM

taking the time to chuck all the grenades that probably wouldnt kill all of them would be a waste of time. much better off blowin the bitch and getting a good jump on the russian turkeys

no, throwing them all would have taken way too much time; just one in the box, blow the van, and two slid hard under it toward the commie thugs (man, feels good to use that phrase again.) Remember the fun Stephen Seagal had with grenades in Under Siege?

Stop! Do not pursue that man! Do not…..BOOM!
