Chicago Tribune:

The heavy presence of security around Obama was also a silent reminder of the change that took place with the announcement. Michelle Obama, the candidate’s wife, acknowledged it in an interview to air on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” in which she was asked if she fears for her husband’s life as a black candidate.

“I don’t lose sleep over it because the realities are that . . . as a black man . . . Barack can get shot going to the gas station,” Michelle Obama said in the interview, set to air Sunday night. “You can’t make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen.”

Well, I’m sure glad I’m white because that means I won’t be shot while “going to the gas station.” I forgot about that unwritten rule where only black men can be shot and no one else.

Yes he may and statistically it would probably be by another black man.

How dare you be “glad” you’re white!

Parley on February 11, 2007 at 11:20 PM

I’m glad to know that I’m bullet proof! I didn’t know this before I read this excerpt on Drudge. Criminals beware - Whitey is here!

lorien1973 on February 11, 2007 at 11:21 PM

Well, Ian, she’s not so far off the mark. As a Black man going to a gas-station in Detroit, Obama could certainly get shot, kidnapped, or even beaten to death with in front of his kids at a gas station–all based on race. All of these things have happened to Blacks perpetrated by MUSLIMS at gas stations around Detroit, as I’ve written here and here. One Black man was beaten to death by a tire iron in front of his 12 year old daughter by two Muslims from Yemen at a Detroit gas station. And even though he has Muslim heritage, Obama would not be an exception at one of these “establishments.”

Debbie Schlussel on February 11, 2007 at 11:22 PM

What a dreadful thing to say. I immediately thought of the D.C. snipers and how fearful everyone was getting gas for their car. And I’m probably not the only one either who will recall that scenario.

INC on February 11, 2007 at 11:24 PM

Amazing, like any given POTUS is or was free from being a target.Drudge was burning on his ” we need to wake from our slumber” statement on the radio just now. I’m seeing Hillary/Obama vs Rudy/Condi as the cage match to watch.

Exactly. Aren’t you glad all of us crackers are born with this Kevlar skin? I am.

Debbie Schlussel on February 11, 2007 at 11:22 PM

I see your point, though that’s regarding a specific localized event. Drudge has been playing the audio of this Michelle Obama bit all night long, and pointing out that the BLACK (Muslim by the way) Beltway Snipers were shooting people of all races… AT GAS STATIONS! What say you Michelle Obama, “as a black woman”?

RightWinged on February 11, 2007 at 11:28 PM

as a black man . . . Barack can get shot going to the gas station,” Michelle Obama said in the interview, set to air Sunday night. “You can’t make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen.”

Let us put this in perspective, shall we?

Black men are many times more likely to be attacked, shot, robbed, and murdered than a white person is. Crime statistics bear this out.

In cases of interracial crime which includes blacks and whites, blacks are the perpetrator of the crime in more than 90% of the cases, whereas whites are the victims of the crime at the hands of blacks in more than 90% of the cases.

Among black victims of crime, the perpetrator of the crime is another black person in more than 90% of the time, and even as much as 95% of the time.

If Mrs. Obama was dropping a race bomb, pushing racial division, race baiting, race mongering, whatever she might have been doing, the facts state that her husband, Obama, is more likely to be the victim of a crime at the hands of a black perpetrator than from any other racial or ethnic group.

Mrs. Obama should be reprimanded on her statement and taken to task on her race mongering and attempt to incite racial discord. Someone who has the facts should confront her and Baraka Hussein Obama about that statement and the motivation behind it. She should not be given a pass on her clear attempt to spew her obviously deep seated racial animosity.

Bottom line, Mrs. Obama appears to be a racist.

If she really intended her words to mean that as a black man he is more likely to be shot while at a gas station because blacks are victims of crime in higher numbers in proportion to their population than other ethnicities, and if she meant to say that blacks are victims of crime more often at the hands of other blacks, then she could have avoided any animosity, and avoided any confusion, and avoided stirring up racially discordant feelings.

RightWinged on February 11, 2007 at 11:28 PM

Actually, it’s not a specific localized event. It was an epidemic of events against Blacks perpetrated by Muslim owners of gas stations widespread all over the greater Detroit area. I know she wasn’t referring to that. But I think it’s a point that is relevant to what she said. (Though I certainly do agree with some of the other points that have been made here, thus far.)

I semi-agree. I think it’s a very interesting and obviously completely underreported situation… However I think in the general way Michelle Obama was talking, it’s more relevant to raise the issue about the Beltway Snipers (as one example), as she was clearly playing the “black victim” card.

It’s “60 Minutes” people…. I was watching Col. North and the troops on the FNC. Better veiewing, seeing what is actually going on. Then I saw the clip here.

“Barack can get shot going to the gas station,”

True, over 15 times American citizens have been killed by illegal aliens in the past year in the United States than have troops been killed in the war on terror, all over the world.

Nuance?

Then I made the mistake of wanting to see the “Police” reunited…. and turned to CBS just in time to see the spectable of Andy Roony….. nice, then immediately after the “Police”, “The Dixie Chicks”…. as presented by Mz. “Eternal Protester”.

Good thing I got those “Vomit Buckets”, I think I will make a nice profit on E-Bay……..

Pathetic…….. one election, and they come out of the wood work……. time to shove it down our throats again….

Plleeaaaauuuussseeeeee……..

What’s next…..?

Back to HBO and the episodes of “ROME”….

So I guess there’s no chance Obama will be taking the Bill Cosby tack by talking about the serious dysfunctions within black culture in a serious way. Looks like we’re in for something closer to Al Sharpton.

Seriously, it’s a hard issue to tackle. Just look at all the grief Bill Cosby gets.

Yakko77 on February 12, 2007 at 12:18 AM

Since he probably will not have to fill up ever again…no need to worry about this topic…

However, it looks like we have a pretty sane candidate, with a nutty looking and acting spouse. The thread with the “first spouse” coins comes to mind…

Never saw/heard this lady until today…and what a first impression - it’s over!

Entelechy on February 12, 2007 at 12:26 AM

I can just hear my wife answer that question “Do you fear for the safety of your husband?”

Her answer “As a mixed race man married to a minority woman, William could be shot while at the gas station.”

That should get me a few votes from the preferred group, preferred minority bean counter contingent!

Introduced by the legendary Joan Baez, who referred to them as “three brave women,” the Dixie Chicks performed their charged “Not Ready To Make Nice.” Led by Natalie Maines, fellow Chicks Emily Robison and Martie Maguire pulled off an almost defiant performance that climaxed in the song’s powerful, impassioned chorus, a statement of intent that pulled the heartstrings of the worldwide GRAMMY audience.

If you did not see the interview you should see the whole thing. Gosh he is eloquent and articulate, and I don’t mean that in a racist or condescending way, just that our current president sounds almost like a functional illiterate sometimes. See kids if you are a drunkard till 40 you can kill brain cells but still be president if your daddy was a former US president. Doha!

If you voted for Bush (and I did, Doha!) you can’t possibly criticise the Obama’s for being black or saying blacks have a different reality in America. He can’t win, he is not black enough or he is using the RACE card. Conservatives are really scared, ha ha. At this point I feel we could not possibly do worse than what we have.

Look all you haters, racist, ideologues out there I thought that his wife’s phrasing, “he’s a black man and could get shot at a gas station” was an odd phrase. However she said, its a reality and it is. He is more likely to get shot than a white man. The fact is blacks (people that look like Obama) don’t get cabs and are more likely to be victims of crimes or yes, shot.

Now before you call me on questionable statistics, granted there are factors that go into that, however he did not grow up with a spoon in his mouth.

All I have to say is WOW! He is an impressive individual and his wife has a lot going on. Future president? I really don’t know its just under two years from now. We shall see. I want to see what they all have to say.

Oh and the genius who said Mrs Obama looks drunk, she looks tired. I am sure she was up early with the kids; you are a creation. At least she can get rest, but you will always be stupid. ha ha.

I hope every one dissects every word Bush says or other candidates from both parties utter. Than Bill-Oh can get the body language lady on to tell you if he’s is nervous.

(By the way the Dixie Chicks swept the Grammy awards and all they said was Bush from Texas embarrassed them, and they got death threats. “Not ready to make nice” is a powerful song. Bush really killed the GOP NeoCon Evangelical juggernaut in just a few years. Way to GO Duba-u.)

gmcjetpilot on February 12, 2007 at 1:09 AM

Dude, I’m only cutting a bit of your ridiculous comment, but just know that the entire thing was one of the stupidest pieces of liberal drivel I’ve ever read. It’s like you’re a 14 year old girl who’s liberal freshman social studies teacher gave you the same indoctrination they all do, and you came on here praising the Dixie Chicks like some little girl. “Death threats”? Come on? You have to be a child if you’re going that route. Everyone gets death threats. How about how conservative speakers get PHYSICALLY ATTACKED constantly when they’re asked to speak at colleges? Etc. etc. You’re a clown.

But you said a couple interesting things… Obama is an “impressive” individual… Based on? Everyone keeps talking about how great he is… yet it’s racist for Bush to call him articulate (not in the context of speaking of his race, which differs from Biden’s “clean” and “articulate” comment, which did mention race)… but you people love this guy for what? What is so special about him? The FACT is, he’d be a nobody if he weren’t black and you know it. He’s been riding this “I’m black” thing, and that’s ALL he has going for him.

Hilariously, I actually watched a black woman on Colbert the other night talking about how he’s not “black”, and he’s actually an “African-African-American”, because his father is actually from Africa, and he’s NOT the descendant of slaves, and was raised by his WHITE grandparents in Hawaii. The woman was clearly a far lefty, but attacking him because she doesn’t consider him “black” because his ancestors weren’t slaves. Colbert asked if Obama would gain street cred in the woman’s eyes if he were to be enslaved for a period of time. “Nothing racist!” he said, but maybe he could be Jesse Jackson’s slave, or Al Sharpton’s slave. It was hilarious. This woman didn’t look amused. But at the same time, she was the one saying Obama wasn’t black.

That said, Obama is NOT more likely to be shot than a white person. The same way most Senators are not. He’s not Tyrone from ’round the way, strolling through the ‘hood to past the gun shop and to the liquor store to pick up some Colt 45. So his wife’s comment is completely ridiculous, and straight race baiting, period.

And isn’t it funny how you libs love your “blacks are more likely to be shot” stats… but you neglect to mention who does the shooting? And how much more likely whites are to be the victim of crimes at the hands of blacks vs. the other way around. This has nothing to do with anything of course, but full disclosure please.

Oh, by the way… you might notice that the causes for this are that the highest gun crime areas happen to be inner city areas that happen to be full of minorities. It’s not like black people walking through most areas have to be concerned. It’s a neighborhood/area in any major city sure, but they aren’t places Obama hangs out… and they aren’t places that most people in general have ever been through.

RightWinged on February 12, 2007 at 2:09 AM

This gaffe will likely hurt Obama more than it should. I’m going to cut his wife some slack, in spite of how racist her answer comes across. She should not have painted a picture of black victimhood, this is true, but her answer was less about that than about attempting to put the fear of assassination in perspective. She simply did it poorly.

Is America’s first black president, whomever that may be and whenever it occurs, more likely to be targeted for assassination than any given white president? Eight of the last nine presidents have been targeted, Kennedy fatally and Reagan seriously wounded. I’d add Robert Kennedy in as a probable winner in ‘68 had he not been killed.

With only LBJ in the last 44 years to not be the subject of an assassination plot, I’d say the risk cannot be honestly considered that much higher for a minority, or for a woman. Speaking of which, why is nobody asking Hillary (or Bill) about their fear of the first woman president being targeted?

Hmmm, I don’t know. James Jordan (NBA legend Michael’s father) was murdered and carjacked while pulled over to rest while driving. Former LA police chief (and a black American) Bernard Parks’ granddaughter, Lori Gonzalez, was murdered in a middle class black neighborhood in LA (I know the area well). One of the older sisters of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams caught a stray Crip bullet and died a few years back.

Do these anecdotal cases prove the truth of Mrs. Obama’s statement? No, but class issues (”strolling through the ‘hood to past the gun shop and to the liquor store”) do not disprove her statement.

It’s all about the self-hate, folks. (And yes, I keep my head down in my neighborhood and try to be home before dark.)

One more thing: I live in a middle-class neighborhood myself–composed of mostly black and hispanic folks. (There is at least one Korean dude down the street and one very old white man around the corner. Hey, cut me some slack for mentioning that! They stand out.)

The houses are old, but well-preserved. The streets are narrow and quiet most of the time (aside from the occassional police helicopter) and the lawns are well-manicured.

The only thing that would tell a person “what time it is” is this: almost every house–including mine–has security bars on the windows and barred doors to go along with the regular doors on each egress to an individual house.

Is Mrs. Obama telling the truth from what she knows? You make the call.

baldilocks on February 12, 2007 at 4:42 AM

Given that Obama lives in suburban splendor, I suppose he’s under constant threat of being gunned down by investment bankers. While getting gas. For his SUV.

spmat on February 12, 2007 at 3:24 AM

Obama doesn’t live in the suburbs, he lives in Hyde Park-Kenwood neighborhood which is in the heart of the city.
And I should add it’s just about the most most damned looney left liberal spot on the planet.

No Michelle, you were raised this way.

“As a Black Man he could be shot just going to the gas station”

Well since 90% of crime against blacks is perpetrated by other blacks, I guess she’s worried about Obama’s bros taking him down… I doubt it. It’s a racial comment and she has just ruined the fly over vote.

Hey are we allowed to call him “Chimpy” or can only white folks be called derogatory statements?

Bob on February 12, 2007 at 6:27 AM

baldilocks on February 12, 2007 at 4:16 AM

Those examples are pointless examples that you know about simply because they were in the news… Do I need to go to my local police department here in low crime whitey Vermont and dig out a list of random white people who’ve been shot at random places? Your logic on this is WAY off.

baldilocks on February 12, 2007 at 4:42 AM

No offense here, seriously guy, but you aren’t in a middle class neighborhood… Well, I suppose it depends on your definition of middle class… but I would be willing to bet the average person wouldn’t consider the neighborhood you describe as middle class. Even in lower income, working class neighborhoods at most you’re going to have one of those black bar/cage looking screen door things… but not bars on the windows. And whether this sounds racist or not. let’s be real, if it were a middle class neighborhood, you’d have a lot more than one old white guy in it. That is a classic sign of a run down neighborhood, one last old guy who is either just holding on to his place because he refused to be run out, and/or because he lives off of his social security and simply can’t afford to go anywhere else.

Again, I’m not trying to insult you, but your description of a “middle class” neighborhood, sounds to me like the “old” and rundown neighborhood that every city has. It’s not necessarily ghetto, but it’s where the ghetto will eventually spread, and all the middle class folks have left it and it’s the forgotten part of town. We even have it here, and Burlington, VT isn’t even close to a normal metropolitan area. We have “the old north end”… It’s actually bordering downtown, within walking distance, and is all old dumpy houses turned in to apartment buildings, most of which are Section 8. The “new north end” isn’t even that new anymore, but it’s residential nice safe neighborhoods. I just moved back up here after 5 years in Nashville. The ghetto there is all the streets off of Jefferson St. and 8th N. 8th Ave. area, etc. it sort of borders what’s called “East Nashville”, which is pretty run down in most parts. A couple streets are decent, but you’re still within walking distance of the thugs, and you can tell. The streets are dark and gloomy. The occassional crackhead is muttering to themselves on the sidewalk. Woman with crazy eyes starin’ you down at a red light when you’re heading to your friend’s bar.

But the area of Chicago where Obama lives is hardly a ghetto. It’s almost an urbanized gated community, walled off from the rest of African-American areas of the city. Getting shot at the gas station is not a frequent occurence, for whites or blacks.

billy on February 12, 2007 at 7:25 AM

I completely agree billy, in fact that was a point I was making earlier… the post you’re citing was one I wrote with an entirely different point in response to someone else’s comment.

I agree, Obama is “above race”, as it were, when it comes to talking about what race gets shot more. Again, that’s ridiculous anyway, and it’s more about neighborhood.. but again, as many here thought and as Drudge kept repeating on the radio… The most famous “gas station” shootings, were mixed race (mostly white) people at the hands of black guys (who by the way turned out to be Muslims, don’t even get me started on how we didn’t throw a fit over the “middle-aged white male” criminal profiling done during that case, yet we can’t terrorist profile at airports).

Anyway billy, I just want to be clear I agree 100% with what you’re saying, which is what I was saying, and you must have misunderstood something (or I wasn’t clear) in the post you’re referring to. It’s more about lifestyle and neighborhood, than it is race. And Obama isn’t say running register at 7-11, or getting jacked walking to a ghetto home from a McDonald’s job. Or wandering down the wrong street wearing the wrong colors… Nor did he even grow up in that environment…. he was raised by white grandparents in Hawaii.

Okay.
Just to give you taste of just how damned left Hyde Park is: the Chicago Trib used give a precinct by precinct breakdown of voting patterns. After the ‘92 election my precinct in Hyde Park had exactly 3 Republican voters. I often tried to meet the other two, but outing myself in that neighborhood just wouldn’t have been safe.

billy on February 12, 2007 at 7:55 AM

Why are we avoiding the elephant in the room? When is someone going to mention her ’70’s’ back-combed hair style? Really…she looks like my mom - only…black. Can you honestly see this woman on the new gold coin?

thedecider on February 12, 2007 at 12:54 AM

That was my first thought too. What’s with the hair?

CrimsonFisted on February 12, 2007 at 8:18 AM

This is a shameless ploy to have black Americans somehow identify with Obama, many of whom don’t quite feel he is American, just as many Americans didn’t feel John Kerry was American. Orthodox Catholics didn’t quite buy into the fact that Kerry was actually Catholic, and about 80% of veterans and the military didn’t believe that Kerry was a patriotic American.

It is a way to grant Obama absolute moral authority. But from a standpoint of politics and swaying voters, this interview doesn’t seem very effective.

januarius on February 12, 2007 at 8:23 AM

. as a black man . . . Barack can get shot going to the gas station,” Michelle Obama said

I went to the Dr and complained as I raised my arm ‘My arm hurts when I do this’.
The Dr said ‘Don’t do that’.

Wade on February 12, 2007 at 8:33 AM

Aren’t there more significant things to criticize Obama about? I don’t think she’s making a point aside from the statistic concerning black violent death rates. Whether or not she’s aware it’s from other black men (predominately) is up for debate.
But I agree that O.B. probably need not worry about getting car jacked.

SouthernDem on February 12, 2007 at 8:37 AM

SouthernDem on February 12, 2007 at 8:40 AM

If you did not see the interview you should see the whole thing. Gosh he is eloquent and articulate, and I don’t mean that in a racist or condescending way, just that our current president sounds almost like a functional illiterate sometimes. See kids if you are a drunkard till 40 you can kill brain cells but still be president if your daddy was a former US president. Doha!

Bush is the POTUS because the moonbat left ran loony left candidates against him. If he were as articulate as a Reagan, his wins would have been by landslides.

Look all you haters, racist, ideologues out there

What altenate universe are you living in? Who here said anything that can be remotly described that way?

All I have to say is WOW! He is an impressive individual and his wife has a lot going on.

Based on what? He has done NOTHING that remotly qualifies him to be the POTUS.

We shall see. I want to see what they all have to say.

Yeah, you liberals want your ears tickled. We conservatives want to see what he has done (shadely land deals etc) and more important that what he says NOW, I want to hear what he has said in the PAST and hold him accountable for his political flip-flopping.

IE: “I am not running for president. I am not running for president in four years. I am not running for president in 2008.”

–Barack Obama, Nov. 3, 2004

I guess it depends on what your definition of “not” is. We all see the mentality of the moonbat left, and your comments have illustrated it perfectly.

csdeven on February 12, 2007 at 9:00 AM

From Dr. Thomas Sowell

My brother recalled his younger days down South during the Jim Crow era, when he had a job working late. After work, he had a long walk back home in the middle of the night. But, he says, “When I got to the black neighborhood, I felt safe!” That speaks volumes about what has happened since then.

Wade on February 12, 2007 at 9:05 AM

I want to hear what he has said in the PAST and hold him accountable for his political flip-flopping.

When it comes to flip flopping, how do you describe Romney’s switch on some issues? Has he been “enlightened”?

SouthernDem on February 12, 2007 at 9:07 AM

IrishEi on February 12, 2007 at 8:22 AM

I think items 1-7 and item 9 are good goals that are needed in many black communities. Item 8 is a christian value that could apply to anyone.

Items 10-12 are racist, bigoted BS that, IMHO, negates everything else on that list. I would not attend a church that held those views and was white focused, and I sure as heck am not going to support a candidate that thinks black racism and bigotry is the best way to achieve black equality. They are headed towards black supremacy.

csdeven on February 12, 2007 at 9:10 AM

The race card is nothing but a joker. It is getting old, the the “white guilt” is diminishing on the conservatives side, we know what it takes…education. Something the liberals have kept from the blacks for decades.
Liberals slogan: Keep them stupid, keep them on the plantation.

budorob on February 12, 2007 at 9:17 AM

When it comes to flip flopping, how do you describe Romney’s switch on some issues? Has he been “enlightened”?

Yes.

In fact Romney has gone so far as to explain just how and why he came to change his opinion on abortion (came about during discussions over stem cell research, I believe.) That’s a far cry from any explanation Shrillary the Pancake has ever given.

Mind you, I am not saying that Romney would be my first choice for GOP nominee–rather, I just want to point out that Republicans are ALWAYS held to a higher standard than Democrats, even by fellow Republicans. Ask a Democrat why they changed their mind on an issue, and you get one or another variant of:

Bush lied!
Halliburton!
Vast right-wing conspiracy!

IrishEi on February 12, 2007 at 9:19 AM

I hope every one dissects every word Bush says or other candidates from both parties utter.

gmcjetpilot on February 12, 2007 at 1:09 AM

You mean like when the press crucified President Bush for calling Obama articulate? For Christ’s sake you idiot, the MSM has dissected every syllable that has come out of Bush’s mouth for five years, now reaching the point where they viciously turn a respectful compliment into a racist remark.

Get a clue, will ya?
