“You know I actually did choose to run for president; after I was against it”

truthmattersfa on February 11, 2007 at 1:18 PM

Actually it was not a silly question, it was a good question in that it allowed Obama to show his smarts. He came off being not so smart because:
– as an adult who has been in politics he should have been prepared for the question. He wasn’t.
– as an adult he should know that people can’t be sure of what they might decide to do 2+ years down the road, because things change. He didn’t show it when he could have.
– and he could have given a good answer showing he was seasoned and experienced. Instead he showed he was a noob.

Noobs get pwned on the internet (and in the press). He’s getting pwned now.

Is he still a noob? We’ll find out.

Dusty on February 11, 2007 at 1:35 PM

Great noobalicious photo of him, BTW.

Dusty on February 11, 2007 at 1:38 PM

It’s only a flip-flop if he cannot come up with a good excuse as to why he changed his mind. Flip-flops are when you change your mind for no reason, when nothing has changed, or simply to be a populist.

I think the wiser answer for Obama back then would have been to say, “I don’t know, we’ll have to wait and see.” But he didn’t. Tough luck.

Seixon on February 11, 2007 at 1:42 PM

“It’s a silly question”…

Depends on your definition of “silly”…

Unfortunately for Obama, he’s ruining his chances to continue on the Messiah track without being derailed. When he loses the nomination (he’s running against a Clinton…what is he thinking?) he will lose his Messiah-ship.

Two years a Senator…He really should wait…

JetBoy on February 11, 2007 at 1:42 PM

Still not as big an issue as the latest attack on him, that he SMOKES CIGARETTES. I could almost smell his supporters lighting up as the story broke.

The spin he could use is that he wasn’t satisfied with the field of candidates. Any poltician could hit this out of the park. It might work in his favor. ‘I was so unsatisfied with the current crop of candidates I felt compelled to run.’ Calling his opponents incompetant without actually saying it.

But his supporters are lighting up something else. Freekin hippies :)

This isn’t a flip-flop. “The is a presidential election in four years. I’m not running for president in four years.”

He’s running for president in two years, so no flip-flop. (It all depends on what the definition of ‘is’ is. He is a Democrat, after all.)

rmgraha on February 11, 2007 at 2:41 PM

There’s a wahhabi madrasas in Jakarta that I attended for several years before I didn’t attend it for several years.

Teddy on February 11, 2007 at 2:43 PM

He’ll be out of the race before he knows it, too.

bloggless on February 11, 2007 at 2:46 PM

Again, he will be vice-president this time around, good challengers notwithstanding – watch and see.

Emmett J. on February 11, 2007 at 2:47 PM

As long as he continues to pollute my air with his second hand smoke, he will not get my vote.

bloggless on February 11, 2007 at 2:55 PM

I can just see him slinking around the White House front porch to have a smoke.

So you think there’s a good reason he’s now running for President, other than his popularity?

RedinBlueCounty on February 11, 2007 at 2:57 PM

I have no idea, he’ll have to answer that. Maybe someone persuaded him to run. He simply has to explain why he didn’t see himself running back then, and why that has changed. If there is a good reason, he should be able to explain it pretty easily. If there isn’t one, then we can expect him to come up with some kind of claptrap.

Ian on February 11, 2007 at 1:14 PM

His playing the role of the coy statesman above the fray of grubby politicking only to eventually throw his hat into the ring is about as old as the American electoral system. Jefferson, Adams, etc. were famous for that. Your brining it up as something novel smacks of gotcha politics and is an issue. Thus, my comment.

RedinBlueCounty on February 11, 2007 at 2:57 PM

Well, he is the Muslim world’s “Annointed One.” He would do them proud, too, if somehow he became president:
1) Immediately pull out the troops from the Mideast.
2) Increase immigration from Muslim countries for diversity.
3) Slash funding for our military and CIA.
4) Stop all eavesdropping on Muslim terrorists in the U.S. and profiling.

“I only said I wasn’t going to run before the tens of billions of people of this world pleaded for me to run…. how could I let all of them down….. it is a calling from the Lord… it is my destiny to be your leader in this brave new world, my children.”

Oh, the NUANCE, I am going to beat the crowds and buy my supply of “Vomit Buckets” before there is a run on them……..

PinkyBigglesworth on February 11, 2007 at 3:42 PM

I cared, before I didn’t.

Entelechy on February 11, 2007 at 4:14 PM

I understand the conspiratorial savor of imagining Obama as the Islamist Manchurian candidate, but I have yet to hear even a remotely convincing argument for it, other than the fact that his father is Kenyan and Muslim. I’m more afraid of the fact that an Obama presidency would mean an entrenched and reinforced leftist presence in the judiciary and four years of incoherent, simpering foreign policy.

In short, the man is a Chomskyite socialist. That’s bad enough.

spmat on February 11, 2007 at 4:16 PM

Well, he is the Muslim world’s “Annointed One.”

I guess that makes him the Thirteenth Imam. That’s a scary thought.

Fox’s site is running a story on Obama reacting to John Howard’s pointing out that Islamists would prefer a Democrat in the White House. Can we have a thread about that one?

For that matter, can we just have John Howard run for president?

Blacklake on February 11, 2007 at 7:54 PM

Maybe he’s not as “articulate” as Biden says he is.

SouthernGent on February 11, 2007 at 7:58 PM

He was a liar then.
He is a liar now.
It really IS that simple.

Will Americans be stupid enough to elect a POTUS with the name Barack Hussein Obama? I certainly hope not.

do you realize how ridiculous this sounds? If that actually becomes a repub talking point then the buzz is correct, they really do have no chance in 08. You do your own side a disservice. Go after his lack of experience or something.

US Religious News is running a story where they claim the Indonesian Catholic school records list Obama as a Muslim.
http://www.usareligiousnews.com/newsArticle.php?ID=1827
I smell Hillary all over this. (Ewwwwwwww)

Buzzy on February 11, 2007 at 8:54 PM

From Buzzy’s story he linked to:

Obama’s spokesman Robert Gibbs says he isn’t sure why the Catholic school document had Obama listed as a Muslim. Gibbs told AP, “Senator Obama has never been a Muslim.” While the spokesman is denying that Obama was never a Muslim, Obama, himself, has not publicly said he was never and is not now a Muslim.

What can Americans expect of a Muslim-educated Obama? AP writes of its interviews at the Muslim school in Indonesia, “Those tied to the school say they are proud to have had a student like Obama, and hope that, if he is elected president, his ties to Indonesia will broaden his world perspective and his views on religion.” Indonesia is home to some of the most radical Islamic schools in the world. And Obama’s identity is yet to be revealed as the confusing doubletalk hides the real Barack Hussein Obama, Democratic candidate for President of the United States .

I majored in Asian Studies, studied in Malaysia, and have been to Indonesia. To me, there is something about the character or demeanor of Barack Obama, along with the facts of his background, that make me suspect that he is a Muslim but does not want to publicly announce it.

Let’s also use some post-9/11 common sense here: If his father AND stepfather were both Muslims and his mother was an “atheist” who listed him as a Muslim while he attended Catholic school, where did he get his political and religious views from? Children get almost all their views on these matters from their parents. Liberals have liberal children, conservatives have conservative children, pro-life parents have pro-life kids, pro-choice parents have pro-choice kids, and Muslims have Muslim children.

There are lots of nice Muslims in Malaysia and Indonesia who like Americans, but nearly all of them have an attitude towards the government of America and of course Israel. Indonesia also is not the “moderate” Islamic country that Barack Obama’s campaign team would have us believe. There are many radicals in Indonesia. Dr. Mahathir of Malaysia was always thought of as a “moderate” and look at views on the Jewish people and America.

Barack Obama is far too close to Islam for our security. Plus, his far left views are exactly what you would expect a Muslim to have.

Finally, the number of lies that Obama has been caught in so far would make the Clintons blush.

Wait a minute, I thought Obama was a Muslim apostate and if we elected him President our relations with the Arab world be forever hindered because Muslims would have no choice but to try to kill him. Now you are saying that he is the Muslim world’s annointed one? If you want to convince me your crazy bigoted theories are true you have to pick a story and stick to it. Jesus, it’s confusing trying to figure out why I should hate Obama when your stories keep contridictating one another. If you want me to drink the kool-aid, the least you can do is make it taste good.

JaHerer22 on February 11, 2007 at 11:41 PM

JaHerer22,

Barack Obama has proudly stated his name is Muslim for “Annointed.” Because of the religion of his parents and his schooling in Indonesia, Muslims consider him Muslim. Having a president that Muslims think is Muslim will cause great problems in the Mideast.

Is this very difficult to understand?

januarius on February 12, 2007 at 8:13 AM

Come on, wait for something important. Everyone has the right to change their mind about running. How many of us have said something like “I am never moving from here”, or ” I won’t leave my job”, and something happens that leads you in another direction. You haven’t flip-flopped, a way over-used expression, the wind changed and you changed your course.

sorry, meant to say: “kool-aid”

BHO is nothing more than an empty suit socialist. He scares the heck out of me with his left-leaning talk. If he is the Democrat candidate and wins, part of it will be the successful program the libs have had dumbing down America. There are too many people who take their freedom for granted and that all we have to do is TALK and all will be fine. Meanwhile, we are taxed to death for all the “FREE” goodies the government passes around. Wake up folks before it is too late. Same can be said of Hillary. THey are really two peas in a pod.
