I’ll clear this up for you: (I think) “thedecider’s” sarcastic point was just as liberals seem determined not to notice the economic prosperity occuring under Bush (is your newfound honesty stong enough for you to admit that obvious truth) … they seem equally determined to engage in a little revisionist history about the rough spots under Clinton and the truly horrible Carter economy.

Don’t think he was saying the economy is always bad under Democrats (not to put words in his mouth). I think he was saying the opposite: that contrary to what’s portrayed, it’s not always GOOD under Democrats. And that (gasp) it ain’t half bad at the moment.

I’m sure we can agree on that.

This is liberal humor. They go after the policies of Republicans but not of Democrats. Republicans are either stupid (Bush, Ford) with stupid policies or evil (Reagan, Cheney) with evil policies. Democrats, like Clinton and Carter, are smart with smart policies but with funny personal flaws.

The fact is they made lots of fun at both Jummuh’s and Bubba’s expense when they were in office, and not just against Republicans. In face, just a few weeks ago, they made Hellary look both stupid and venial. Didn’t they just take a shot at Pelosi two shows ago?

So, I’m not sure I agree with your characterization of “liberal humor.” The essence of the humor in these sketches IS the “character flaws” of their targets, and that is “legitimate” in humor, especially when the targets are elected officials.

I guess the test of your hypothesis (or mine) will be how (not if) they go after Osama, er, Obama. I can’t wait….

If you’re a Republican, they attack your policies, if you’re a Democrat they attack personality flaws. Sure, there are countless Clinton/Lewinsky jokes, just as there are countless Bush is an idiot jokes. But there are also countless Bush Katrina and Iraq jokes, and plenty of others. But where there blackhawk down jokes? Where there jokes about Clinton’s failures that lead to 9/11? Where there jokes about Clinton passing on a recession to Bush?

The Hillary dig was the same dig the far left has been taking at her, because that’s what the show is all about. They (the left, SNL, the media) are in Obamamania right now, but they’d be all Hillary (because Obama doesn’t stand a chance) if she’s just come out agressively against the war and call Bush a liar. She hasn’t been vicious enough for them yet so they are trying to make her.

The Pelosi thing is an even worse example. It was actually intended to mock the right, and exaggerate on screen our fears of what her leadership will mean (S&M in the House, etc., abortions, etc.) This was very obvious.

Did SNL attack Newt Gingrich, for example, as an evil guy who wanted to throw people off of welfare? This in spite of the fact that he was correct that his policy preference would have long-term positive consequences? Yes, SNL did that.
Did they attack Bill Clinton for trying to nationalize 1/6th of the US economy? I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure they made fun of him for boffing the help. Fun that ended with him biting his lip playfully as if to say “It’s not really wrong since I’m the President.” Did SNL make fun of Clinton for his handling of the 1993 WTC attacks and his lack of response?

Each joke is especially funny if you’re in and of the Left. That’s the point. It’s funnier if we accept the Left’s maxims to be true. It can be funny from the Right’s perspective too, just not as much.

The media can’t get troops to side with their agenda, so SNL just decided they would make it up, by pretending Cheney would get an angry reception from troops in Iraq (note that after the likely bogus Lance Corporal part, they went through a stack of negative cards supposed to be from other troops). The crowd loved it.

Remember Akroyd doing “Jummuh” and the incredible growing President at 3 Mile Island? And all those classic Hartmann portrayals of Reagan. GWH Bush, today, even refers to the Dana Carvey bits, and recently used the (attributed) Carvey line “wouldnt’be prudent” line in a speech.

They even went after Kennedy during a bit about Justice Thomas’ confirmation hearing. As I recall, they had Kennedy asking Thomas if the best way to get into your nephew’s date’s pants is by running around with your pants off.

We are lucky in America that our politicians have thick skins who honor the long standing tradition that they are targets of humorists.

Can you imagine what would have happened to the comedians in “Idi-VD” Amin’s Uganda?

And yes, I’d go hunting with Dick Cheney. But I’d make sure that I’d “have his back,” if you know what I mean.

Mad TV had a funnier sketch where Hillary shows up to collect the female politician of the year award and her speech is “Finally I won an award that Barak Obama isn’t eligible for” and then he shows up…and everyone forgets Hillary. I’m sure it will get posted somewhere…funny stuff.

Poking fun at politicians is an age honored tradition. Trumpeting an agenda and masking it as humor isn’t.
