He always does a good Cheney, but that Iraq troop bit was more than a little obnoxious. Even if that isn’t a fictional Lance Corporal they used the name of, it is still not fair to put their politics in the mouths of the troops. That pisses me off. Particularly given what Pat Dollard, who has spent 6 months in Iraq hot spots and riding around getting blown up with the troops has had to say:
http://patdollard.com/press/maxim-interview/
Anyway, I suspect they used a fictional Lance Corporal, but either way that was f**ked up. The media makes up their own stories, and even those stationed in Iraq report from their hotel rooms, and almost never report the troops blasting the biased coverage. The media can’t get troops to side with their agenda, so SNL just decided they would make it up, by pretending Cheney would get an angry reception from troops in Iraq (note that after the likely bogus Lance Corporal part, they went through a stack of negative cards supposed to be from other troops). The crowd loved it.

Yaaaaaaaawwwnnnnnnn.
SNL trying to make a political point through “humor”?
Mideast Media posting this as “truth”?
No one on the Left has learned anything yet?
The nuance, oh…. the nuance.
Our beloved troops still fighting in the field???
Anything for a cheap laugh???
I agree with RD…

They got the “shot the guy in the face” bit in there also. They forgot to include that they were able to celebrate the anniversary by referring to Nancy Pelosi’s Democratic Calendar where the event is commemorated.

I love living in PST. You EST guys just saved me the trouble of tuning in to SNL tonight, in hopes of catching a Shrillary or Osama skit.
Benthoven on February 11, 2007 at 2:03 AM
You’d think they would prefer to go with all the fresh material the Dems are providing. Guess not. I heard Joy Behar say once that the reason comedians were making fun of Republicans was because they were the ones in power. Well, Dems are in power now, think they’ll start making fun of them now? Me neither.

Reference to Dick’s, um, elephant, um, anatomy?
I’m gonna take a whild guess, since AP didn’t list it, that was left unchecked.

Amen to that.

Weak.
Keep the Red Eye vids coming. Gutfeld is funny.

“If I go to jail, you’re going too.”
They really don’t understand the Libby story, I think.
The Blitzer bit was funny.
DaveS on February 11, 2007 at 2:58 AM
Thanks for the reminder of why I stopped watching SNL.
Poking fun at politicians is an age honored tradition. Trumpeting an agenda and masking it as humor isn’t.
LewWaters on February 11, 2007 at 3:04 AM
Lame.
Mad TV had a funnier sketch where Hillary shows up to collect the female politician of the year award and her speech is “Finally I won an award that Barak Obama isn’t eligible for” and then he shows up…and everyone forgets Hillary. I’m sure it will get posted somewhere…funny stuff.
Spassvogel on February 11, 2007 at 4:06 AM
I was channel surfing and caught the Obama vs Hitlery skit, that was more funny!
lsutiger on February 11, 2007 at 4:41 AM
Well, it had an “agenda,” alright.
But it still was mostly funny. The Blitzer bit especially.
SNL went after Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush 41, and Clinton with about the same ferver as I can recall. Who can forget Chevy Chase portraying Ford as a stumbler and bumbler, always falling over the furniture to opent he show? Remember Akroyd doing “Jummuh” and the incredible growing President at 3 Mile Island? And all those classic Hartmann portrayals of Reagan. GWH Bush, today, even refers to the Dana Carvey bits, and recently used the (attributed) Carvey line “wouldnt’be prudent” line in a speech.
They even went after Kennedy during a bit about Justice Thomas’ confirmation hearing. As I recall, they had Kennedy asking Thomas if the best way to get into your nephew’s date’s pants is by running around with your pants off.
So, I don’t find it offensive.
We are lucky in America that our politicians have thick skins who honor the long standing tradition that they are targets of humorists.
Can you imagine what would have happened to the comedians in “Idi-VD” Amin’s Uganda?
And yes, I’d go hunting with Dick Cheney. But I’d make sure that I’d “have his back,” if you know what I mean.
georgej on February 11, 2007 at 9:34 AM
Exactly.
Reference to Lynne Cheney’s doctorate from University of Wisconsin?
Reference to overwhelming support for the Cheneys by the military and veterans?
Reference to terrorists’ overwhelming hatred for the Cheneys?
I doubt it.
januarius on February 11, 2007 at 9:43 AM
I have never been able to understand you guy’s (you know who “you” are!) fascination with SNL drivel. If that is the best you can find you need give your TV to a thrift store.
TwinkietheKid on February 11, 2007 at 9:45 AM
GeorgeJ,
This is liberal humor. They go after the policies of Republicans but not of Democrats. Republicans are either stupid (Bush, Ford) with stupid policies or evil (Reagan, Cheney) with evil policies. Democrats, like Clinton and Carter, are smart with smart policies but with funny personal flaws. This classic liberal formula for “humor” is still going strong on SNL and other liberal comedy shows.

januarius wrote: “They go after the policies of Republicans but not of Democrats.”
I’m not entirely sure you are right on this. Can you give me some examples?
The fact is they made lots of fun at both Jummuh’s and Bubba’s expense when they were in office, and not just against Republicans. In face, just a few weeks ago, they made Hellary look both stupid and venial. Didn’t they just take a shot at Pelosi two shows ago?
So, I’m not sure I agree with your characterization of “liberal humor.” The essence of the humor in these sketches IS the “character flaws” of their targets, and that is “legitimate” in humor, especially when the targets are elected officials.
I guess the test of your hypothesis (or mine) will be how (not if) they go after Osama, er, Obama. I can’t wait….
georgej on February 11, 2007 at 12:03 PM
Humor is what it is. If we feel it is funny we laugh, if we don’t, turn the tube off or go elsewhere.
By being in the limelight, they are fair game – period!
Emmett J. on February 11, 2007 at 1:33 PM
Emmett J,
Nobody argued otherwise so your strawman is a juvenile ploy to end debate. As is your use of “period!”.
georgej,
Did SNL attack Newt Gingrich, for example, as an evil guy who wanted to throw people off of welfare? This in spite of the fact that he was correct that his policy preference would have long-term positive consequences? Yes, SNL did that.
Did they attack Bill Clinton for trying to nationalize 1/6th of the US economy? I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure they made fun of him for boffing the help. Fun that ended with him biting his lip playfully as if to say “It’s not really wrong since I’m the President.” Did SNL make fun of Clinton for his handling of the 1993 WTC attacks and his lack of response?
Each joke is especially funny if you’re in and of the Left. That’s the point. It’s funnier if we accept the Left’s maxims to be true. It can be funny from the Right’s perspective too, just not as much.
birkel on February 11, 2007 at 2:53 PM
I guess we will have to agree to disagree.
Emmett J. on February 11, 2007 at 3:34 PM
birkel on February 11, 2007 at 2:53 PM – Does a pretty good job of making the point I’d like to make, but I’ll quickly elaborate.
If you’re a Republican, they attack your policies, if you’re a Democrat they attack personality flaws. Sure, there are countless Clinton/Lewinsky jokes, just as there are countless Bush is an idiot jokes. But there are also countless Bush Katrina and Iraq jokes, and plenty of others. But where there blackhawk down jokes? Where there jokes about Clinton’s failures that lead to 9/11? Where there jokes about Clinton passing on a recession to Bush?
The Hillary dig was the same dig the far left has been taking at her, because that’s what the show is all about. They (the left, SNL, the media) are in Obamamania right now, but they’d be all Hillary (because Obama doesn’t stand a chance) if she’s just come out agressively against the war and call Bush a liar. She hasn’t been vicious enough for them yet so they are trying to make her.
The Pelosi thing is an even worse example. It was actually intended to mock the right, and exaggerate on screen our fears of what her leadership will mean (S&M in the House, etc., abortions, etc.) This was very obvious.

It was a classic! The fanatical butt kissing displayed by the attendees was just like the real butt kissing of the media. MAD TV has got some really funny stuff for both sides. Check out the MAD version of the Dixie Twits song about not apologizing. Hilarious.
TugboatPhil on February 11, 2007 at 5:07 PM
Liberal bias or not aside, the “Valentines from Iraq” bit was terrible taste and the hunting accident joke is older than Robert Byrd. The rest of it: pretty funny. But SNL hasn’t been funny since Will Ferrell.

Are you freakin’ kidding? Don’t you know that the U.S. economy BOOMED (yeah, that’s right – freakin’ BOOMED) under Clinton? Because he’s like, this god figure who knew exactly what he was doing and the economy just BOOMED man! Yeah, that Reagan guy had NOTHING to do with it. And Jimmuh Cahtah – well, he was just brewing up a great economic BOOM too! It was all Clinton! Yeah! He knew what to do! As for the dot com bust that his lackey’s failed to project…well, that’s Bush’s fault ’cause Clinton totally rocked man!
thedecider on February 12, 2007 at 1:05 AM
Hey, I have that bumper sticker!
Ian on February 12, 2007 at 1:46 AM
So all economic good comes from Republicans, all bad from Democrats. Got it. And in so fewer words. That’s the beauty of simplistic thinking.
honora on February 12, 2007 at 9:16 AM
Oh, Honora … you were doing so well in those other threads, too.
I’ll clear this up for you: (I think) “thedecider’s” sarcastic point was just as liberals seem determined not to notice the economic prosperity occuring under Bush (is your newfound honesty stong enough for you to admit that obvious truth) … they seem equally determined to engage in a little revisionist history about the rough spots under Clinton and the truly horrible Carter economy.
Don’t think he was saying the economy is always bad under Democrats (not to put words in his mouth). I think he was saying the opposite: that contrary to what’s portrayed, it’s not always GOOD under Democrats. And that (gasp) it ain’t half bad at the moment.
I’m sure we can agree on that.
(crickets chirp, but with hope)
Professor Blather on February 12, 2007 at 11:21 AM
