While the US is represented by Uncle Sam, France is represented by Marianne. The one thing France does right is to pick a hot chick to be Marianne for a few years to represent France. That’s a fabulous idea which we should copy, picking a smoking hot chick to represent America, perhaps as Miss Liberty. Then plant her on our dollars. I’m thinking the first Miss Liberty on our silver dollars should be Pamela Anderson.

Why now? Because someone in the mint wants Hillary to get some free advertisng for the election.

I can see the advertisements now - If she is good enough for the mint, she is good enough for you.

These will be released 4 per year so Hillary won't be up for a while. Most interesting is the Wilson girls--a twofer!

Each coin will have a unique reverse design featuring an image emblematic of that spouse’s life and work

Maybe that is why they stuck with the "spouse" terminology instead of the more PC "partner".

The coin for Hillary would have to be the size of a man-hole cover. Her head is way to big to fit on a small coin and her tail, well ...... I did say man-hole cover, didn't I?

Decider, no. The site clearly states that the Liberty symbol will be used with unmarried Presidents. Jefferson was married to Martha, but I think she died before he took office. So it's like she doesn't count or something.

Too bad that Rachel Jackson died before she became First Lady and thus won't be on the coin. She and Andrew Jackson were deeply devoted to each other and he fought duels in defense of her honor.

I work in a library where we have lots of children's books. It's hard to find a children's book about any of the first ladies other than Abigail Adams or Eleanor Roosevelt - and most are about Eleanor. Some of the first ladies were pretty remarkable women. Lou Hoover was a geologist, Grace Coolidge taught the deaf, Lucy Hayes was active in the Temperance movement (she was known as Lemonade Lucy) and introduced the Easter Egg Roll on the White House lawn. There are interesting stories about many of the first ladies, but children keep getting the same old same old about the Sainted Eleanor.

I question the timing. It is an obvious conspiracy to give an unfair advantage to the one current presidential candidate who will be honored on U.S. currency while running for office.

The third coin is what the front of all the coins will look like. The spouses are on the back. It's like the state quarter thing.

It’s the only way Bill’s going to end up the currency.

Better yet, a two-fer:

The United States Mint will mint and issue First Spouse Gold Coins on the same schedule as the Presidential $1 Coins issued honoring the Presidents.

Cool!

I want to be Abigail Adams when I grow up, so I really appreciate her coin, and the "Remember the Ladies" on the back.

If you get the chance to read any of the letters between John and Abigail, do it. They were a remarkable couple.

Any takers on a possible re-naming of the series to the "First Partners" series so as to be more politically correct (and also if Bill makes the set)?

Just think, it would be the first time that a president and their "partner" would make the set with each having served in both positions (pun unintentional)!

What a silly name. Let us revise history for the sake of political correctness.

Abigail Adams certainly looks like she's giving us her opinion of the unwieldy word "spouse" being substituted for the more elegant term First Lady. And I wonder what the renowned hostess Dolley Madison would think.

It also totally ignores those who were not married to the President and acted for him as First Lady. I'm not saying their wives shouldn't be honored, but this does look like a set-up for Hill and Bill.

What are they going to do about these women (I may have missed some):

One of Jefferson's daughters served as First Lady.

Andrew Jackson was also widowed by the time he was President and a niece served as First Lady.

Van Buren's and Harrison's daughters-in-law served as First Ladies.

Tyler's daughter was First Lady until he remarried.

Buchanan had a niece as his First Lady.

I don’t think I’d want to piss off Abigail Adams, looks like she is aching to kick some butt.

lorien1973 on February 11, 2007 at 10:38 PM
And she did! Of all the First Ladies .. Abigail Adams is counted .. in some circles.. among the Founding Fathers as the one and only Founding Mother!

How’s minimum wage hike working for Arizona?

To the extent that a wage law has any effect, it will cause unemployment. I wrote this explanation of how that happens for 'the compassionate' some time ago, but it still applies:

The Clinton coin will have faces on both sides and will be worth less than a wooden nickel.

Except when buying pron.

ot: How’s minimum wage hike working for Arizona?

This site's lack of attention to social and economic issues is quite apparent. That was an interesting story. The comments on that article are far more interesting though. Scroll through all 10 pages and bask in ignorance :)
