While the US is represented by Uncle Sam, France is represented by Marianne. The one thing France does right is to pick a hot chick to be Marianne for a few years to represent France. That’s a fabulous idea which we should copy, picking a smoking hot chick to represent America, perhaps as Miss Liberty. Then plant her on our dollars. I’m thinking the first Miss Liberty on our silver dollars should be Pamela Anderson.

Maybe that is why they stuck with the “spouse” terminology instead of the more PC “partner”.

You couldn’t buy a stained navy blue Gap dress with one of those worthless slugs.

I work in a library where we have lots of children’s books. It’s hard to find a children’s book about any of the first ladies other than Abigail Adams or Eleanor Roosevelt – and most are about Eleanor. Some of the first ladies were pretty remarkable women. Lou Hoover was a geologist, Grace Coolidge taught the deaf, Lucy Hayes was active in the Temperance movement (she was known as Lemonade Lucy) and introduced the Easter Egg Roll on the White House lawn. There are interesting stories about many of the first ladies, but children keep getting the same old same old about the Sainted Eleanor.

The United States Mint will mint and issue First Spouse Gold Coins on the same schedule as the Presidential $1 Coins issued honoring the Presidents.

I want to be Abigail Adams when I grow up, so I really appreciate her coin, and the “Remember the Ladies” on the back.

If you get the chance to read any of the letters between John and Abigail, do it. They were a remarkable couple.

Just think, it would be the first time that a president and their “partner” would make the set with each having served in both positions (pun unintentional)!

Abigail Adams certainly looks like she’s giving us her opinion of the unwieldy word “spouse” being substituted for the more elegant term First Lady. And I wonder what the renowned hostess Dolley Madison would think.

It also totally ignores those who were not married to the President and acted for him as First Lady. I’m not saying their wives shouldn’t be honored, but this does look like a set-up for Hill and Bill.

What are they going to do about these women (I may have missed some):

One of Jefferson’s daughters served as First Lady.

Andrew Jackson was also widowed by the time he was President and a niece served as First Lady.

Van Buren’s and Harrison’s daughters-in-law served as First Ladies.

Tyler’s daughter was First Lady until he remarried.

Buchanan had a niece as his First Lady.

I don’t think I’d want to piss off Abigail Adams, looks like she is aching to kick some butt.
