Politico: Dem rivals set to go nuclear on Obama

The big announcement’s tomorrow. Is the messiah ready for his Passion?

In interviews, strategists in both parties pointed to four big vulnerabilities: Obama’s inexperience, the thinness of his policy record, his frank liberalism in a time when the party needs centrist voters, and the wealth of targets that are provided by the personal recollections in his first book, from past drug use to conversations that cannot be documented.

Beginning with his announcement for president on Saturday, the long knives will be out for Obama from three directions: Reporters, perpetuating the boom and bust cycle of a ravenous media culture, will try to make up for the fawning coverage of the past. Democratic rivals see him as the easiest mark among the major contenders, and want to get him out of the way. And some top Republicans think the party would have a better chance with Sen. Hillary Clinton as the nominee, since she is a known quantity while Obama can try to define himself as anything he wants.

Officials at the top of both parties calculate that Obama has risen too fast to sustain his popularity in the cauldron of a presidential campaign. Democrats talk of “vapid platitudes” that could produce a “soufflé effect” – an implosion as journalists and activists begin probing for substance behind Obama’s appealing promise of “a different kind of politics” and “a new kind of politics.”…

Says another top Democrat: “Once the shooting war starts, he’s not going to be able to get away with these grand pronouncements.”

None of the four “big” vulnerabilities is especially big. Clinton was inexperienced and had no foreign policy credentials when he was elected. The drug use actually works in Obama’s favor by playing up his biggest advantage, i.e., the fact that people can relate to him, unlike unctuous multimillionaire trial lawyer Lionel Hutz and the glacier you and I know as Hillary. His liberalism is problematic, but we’re not exactly in a golden age for conservatives; if the war sours, people might be ready for a deep blue candidate. If, that is, they vote according to his policies at all: I saw an article two days ago (which naturally I can’t find now) about how most voters vote according to the candidate’s visceral appeal, not his or her platform. Good news for Barry O, not so good for Mrs. Bubba.

You know who’d make this race reallllly interesting?

Exit question: Just how low will GOP turnout be come November 2008?

Nuclear? More like an airstrike targeting an empty building.

This just screams for a photoshop. We know you’re tempted.

What a shock…the MSM reporting that there will be a low turnout for the GOP. Wait another shock…MSM reports none of the candidates are turning us on…wait another shock, MSM reports the leading candidate is really a liberal so why not vote for the real thing?, wait another shock, MSM reports all of the democratic nominees are more exciting than the Republicans.
Later this year: What a shock…the MSM is reporting that the Republicans will lose…didn’t see that coming.

right2bright on February 9, 2007 at 12:50 PM

Early word is they’re going nuclear on Giuliani as well this weekend. Keep your eyes open.

Vincenzo on February 9, 2007 at 12:51 PM

You know who’d make this race reallllly interesting?

Can you imagine the dueling monotones if Hillary and Algore were to debate each other?

Fingernails on a chalkboard x 1000.

Just how low will GOP turnout be come November 2008?

I think it was “Mr. Stats” Barone who said that, indeed, conservatives staying home was the tipping factor in 2006 after all. This don’t look good…

Hey ALLAHPUNDIT:

Me and all my friends wanna know when you’re gonna do more “political comics” like you did in the 2000 election???

Still love that line: “Worse case of jungle fever uncle howie has ever seen!” LOL!!!

Is there any links to the old stuff? I’d like to get a copy!

Andy in Agoura Hills on February 9, 2007 at 1:00 PM

Whatever… the republicans could put Bill Clinton himself on the ticket… if Hillary Clinton is on top of the other side, you will see record GOP turnout.

The Bill part is exaggeration, but I really believe that to be true if there is even a moderately conservative candidate on the Republican side.

Betraying my own ignorance of pop culture, I had to Google “Lionel Hutz.” Heh. I was not disappointed.

Re: Andy’s comment above and the 2004(!) elections …

Yes, A, the rightwingnutosphere sorely misses the good ole days, when we all eagerly anticipated the day’s Dean-o photoshop. “I’m trailing fucking Hitler.” (or was that Kerry?)

I like the term, “souffle effect.”

“Goremania”? Maybe….

GoreMANIAC! Definitely!

You had to read an article to figure that out?

Mark V. on February 9, 2007 at 1:23 PM

Mr. O has a little problem in IL knownas Tony Rezcko…wait for that to jump up and bite his hiney.

Exit question: all depends on who is running…McCain vs Hillary. BIG turnout. Guiliani vs Breck boy. Meh.

If the GOP thinks that Clinton angst will bring out the base in droves, they forget about the lackluster election of ‘96.

Valiant on February 9, 2007 at 1:47 PM

Almost sad in a way. I kind of like Obama. Sure, his politics are wrong and out-dated, but he seems a decent guy with some real leadership potential.

Which, of course, means he’d never have a shot at the Democratic nomination.

Too bad. Call me non-partisan, but I like my elections like my Super Bowls – with two good teams playing.

Instead, we’re inevitably going to get Hillary. Or Gore. Or the Breck Girl.

Shorter version: are Democrats stupid, or what?

Professor Blather on February 9, 2007 at 2:14 PM

Hmmm. So Republicans think the party would have a better chance with Sen. Hillary Clinton as the nominee. The Democratic rivals see Obama as the easiest mark among the major contenders. I wonder who is right?

Zetterson on February 9, 2007 at 2:20 PM

Shorter version: are Democrats stupid, or what?

It looks to me like our only choices in 2008 will be between the Stupid Party and the Stupider Party.

I hear a lot of political commenters on the right expressing abivalence about Romney based on his so-called “evolving political positions” from one decade to the next. For some reason I’ve not heard one mention Romney’s response to that ambivalence: “It may be true that I have not always been a Reagan conservative, but then again neither was Ronald Reagan.”

Zetterson on February 9, 2007 at 2:27 PM

The Clintons didn’t being back Sidney Blumenthal for nothing!

Can’t wait.

I’m all ears.

I suspect that at the end of the day both Obama and Mr. Hutz are shooting for the VP slot on the Hillary train.

Defense Guy on February 9, 2007 at 3:02 PM

Don Goreleone is going to step in and make the peace between Barack and Hitlary. Barack will share the ticket with the Gorebot, and Shrillary steps into the Senate leadership after Dirty Harry’s straw purchases finally catch up to him.

Tattaglia’s a pimp. He never could’ve out-fought Santino. But I didn’t know until this day that it was Barzini all along.

Liberals hardly care about drug use. However, with their attitude towards the tobacco industry, it is surprising that Allah does not mention Obama’s chain smoking. If a Republican smoked, would the MSM consider that to be a liability?

I would never watch CNN, but in the cafeteria today, I heard CNN doing a story of Obama’s smoking. It is Hillary’s way of letting him know who the MSM will support. Obama is finished, like Dean was finished when the MSM turned on him.

Are you saying the lady is frigid?

How is this working for the icicle?

Kid, glaciers don’t move aside easily, not even for other glaciers.

Personality matters and doesn’t change over time. Once cold, always cold…

Choose the sunnier, more optimistic, more magnanimous, least angry candidate and you won’t go terribly wrong.

From the 60 Minutes hagiographic video, via Drudge:

Obama’s wife also addresses the race issue when asked by Kroft whether she fears for her husband’s life as a black candidate. “I don’t lose sleep over it because the realities are that… as a black man… Barack can get shot going to the gas station,” says Michelle Obama. “You can’t make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen.”

Where does one start? “As a black man…”

Because white men don’t get shot?
Because white men shoot black men at the gas station? Because … dare I say it? … black men get shot in the street by racist white cops?
How about because black men shoot each other at astonishing rates for no reason that we can figure out?

Going out on a limb, here: I’m guessing Kroft didn’t follow up this idiotic statement with a worthwhile question. The University of Chicago Hospital pays her $400,000+ per year as a community liaison, whatever that is. Apparently the job doesn’t require serious thought.

Jaibones on February 9, 2007 at 8:03 PM

The University of Chicago Hospital pays her $400,000+ per year as a community liaison, whatever that is.

Community liaison (n) — In Chicago, the relative of a prominent Democrat, who is hired in order to appease the labor unions and the Daley machine (cf: featherbedding, protection racket).

I thought I might like that nice Obama kid. Joe Biden says he’s clean and all. But, then I see him topless in People magazine. Did you see it? No hair on his chest. Smooth chested men leave me clammy. Now, that Hillary…I bet he’s got a hairy chest.

wealth of targets that are provided by the personal recollections in his first book

Write a book and run for President! That does seem to be a common theme among the liberals.

Barack can get shot going to the gas station

He can also drill a hole in the trunk of a sedan and use it as sniper’s nest from where he can shoot white people as they pump gas. Just saying.

Liberals hardly care about drug use

I think you should ask Rush Limbaugh about that theory.
