The obligatory “Anna Nicole Smith dies” post

Unless you’ve been under a rock or in a cave, you’ve heard former porn star Anna Nicole Smith is dead. How’d I hear? While I was waiting for a fire alarm to stop going off in the lobby of one of my classes.
Reality TV star and former model Anna Nicole Smith was pronounced dead Thursday after being taken to a Florida hospital, a law enforcement source told CNN.
Smith, 39, collapsed at a south Florida hotel, according to news reports.
“I can confirm that she is deceased. It’s as shocking to me as to you guys,” Smith’s attorney, Ronald Rale, told Reuters. “I don’t know anything further. [Her lawyer and husband] Howard [K. Stern], obviously, is speechless and grieving.”
Update (from Michelle): I’d like to highlight and echo Baldilocks’ comment.
This was a human being who probably died with no hope and believing that no one left alive really loved her (the baby notwithstanding).
I knew someone else who died believing this (via an overdose) and it hurts to this day that he went out of here in despair.
It’s called empathy.

Makes me wish I’d prayed for her.

This has gone past the realm of parody to just plain sad. I hope she found peace before she died.

E L Frederick (Sniper One) on February 8, 2007 at 4:43 PM
I hated her reality show. Yet there was something about her that I found endearingly vulnerable, kind of like Monroe. I am very sad for her, as I was when her son died. Rest in peace.
Glynn on February 8, 2007 at 4:44 PM
Ian… you MUST get a clip from the View this morning of Rosie O’Dork making fun of ANS. Talk about awkward.

My thoughts exactly. My heart goes out to the baby.

In terms of her death, I almost feel like the need to put on a tinfoil.
She’s set to make a fortune in court from her husband’s estate.
Son, who would be the heir to it after ANS, dies mysteriously while ANS slept in the hospital.
Baby of ANS becomes dispute in a paternity matter with her lawyer and another dude.
ANS dies mysterious in her hotel room.
Unsuspecting and innocent baby becomes heir to her husband’s estate, who will now be awarded to some guy in the courts.
Hmmmmmm….
Enoxo on February 8, 2007 at 4:50 PM
Unfortunately, I don’t know when it was on… I wasn’t watching, I just heard it occured this on this morning’s show sometime on another forum.

Anna, we hardly knew ye….
Sad, but I have had about my fill of that one. How much press can one messed-up individual get? Thank you “Entertainment” industry for continually forcing her down our throats. Please continue to avoid showing the viewing audience people who are actually contributing something positive.
Perhaps it was all done to make people feel better about themselves? As bad as things might seem…..you could be Anna Nicole Smith. A cartoon come to life….and now….

Very Weird, very sad. Having been thru too many of my own tragedies, I feel for whatever family she has left, mom , dad, siblings, and especially her daughter.
Is there way more to this/these stories ( her son dead suddenly)?
This is Marilyn Monroe weird.
I couldn’t respect her after seeing a pic of the old man billionaire and I never saw her in a movie or in a TV show, actually no where, but I feel for her. And thats weird too.
WEIRD.

I don’t think there is any evidence she was a porn star. If you have it, I’d like to see it posted here. Remember Playboy, and stripping are not considered porn by porn standards. Playboy is a gentlemen’s magazine, not porn.
It is so very sad for the baby she leaves behind. They should give it up to be adopted.

I feel sorry for her. She was a pathetic figure but she was a good mom to her son. I think she missed him terribly.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and fans. She’s in God’s hands now, and I pray He’ll have as much mercy on her as I will need myself when I stand before the judgement seat.

It is all the soft-core porn videos she made to accompany her spreads (no pun intended)for Playboy that probably earned her that moniker. No penetration, yet still considered porn.
Gee, did I answer that too quickly?

We are addicted to POP CULTURE because it MATTERS to Americans what this bimbo did.
POP CULTURE is supplanting AMERICAN CULTURE and values that matter to decent folks.
We are commiting suicide in the country, slowly but surely.

seejanemom on February 8, 2007 at 5:10 PM
A glaring statement about the plastic and superficial nature of our society, such as it is. Devoid of substance, talent, and value, yet seeking same in celebrity merely for its’ own sake.
Interesting, isn’t it?
Emmett J. on February 8, 2007 at 5:10 PM
Nice to see you here CAROL!!
seejanemom on February 8, 2007 at 5:11 PM
I’ve always felt a bit bad for ANS–she had a bit of the “Michael Jackson” syndrome. She was from a small town, got really famous quick and I don’t think she dealt with it very well. It’s very easy for us to judge these celebrities–because none of have had the cameras thrust in front of our faces. I don’t know if I could handle fame well or not. I don’t think ANS did.
Someone posted earlier that she was a “waste”. I think that is very harsh.
robblefarian on February 8, 2007 at 5:14 PM
Nobody is a waste. She lived a crappy life and she died alone. She did the best she could to get by in the early years, and I can’t imagine that she was very happy at any point in her life. The least you could do is give her some peace.
E. M. on February 8, 2007 at 5:14 PM
Of course you’re shocked – because now you know it’s gonna be a pain in the ass to ever get paid all those legal fees. Bet you’re shocked as all get out.
—————-
I echo the rest, by the way – lose the “porn star” label. Unless you’re going to start using it with everyone who has ever been naked in a movie or posed for Playboy.
I’m not exactly defending her lifestyle, but in my lexicon “porn star” has a pretty specific meaning, and she ain’t it.
At least consider losing it on the day she died. A little respect.
Alternatively, if respect won’t work, if you’ve got proof that she’s a “porn star” – be courteous to post a link. For research purposes. I’ll review her body (of work) and get back to you with a verdict.

Hey gang, get a grip.
Anna was totally under appreciated as an actress.
Her stint in “”The Hudsucker Proxy” was Oscar quality.
And I know I don’t have to point out her performance in “Naked Gun 33 and 1/3″.
She will be missed.

blockquote>Someone posted earlier that she was a “waste”. I think that is very harsh.
robblefarian on February 8, 2007 at 5:14 PM
Indeed pretty harsh. The whole thing is sad. I don’t mind the (funny) jokes, but calling her a “waste” on the day she dies ain’t exactly Christian. I think there’s something in Matthew about letting Somebody Else do the judging.
I didn’t know her – maybe she was a great mom or something. Or friend. Or sister. Who knows?
But if we’re gonna judge – man, I can think of a lot of celebrities who deserve the “waste” title a lot more than her. Folks who are doing a lot more damage than just showing off the best plastic surgery money can buy.
Professor Blather on February 8, 2007 at 5:21 PM
Jenna Jameson and Mary Carey are/were porn stars. Anna Nicole was not.
This has all the makings of a media frenzy–pretty face, drugs, troubled personal life, then death. Poor Anna Nicole.
She just died, y’all. If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything.

No Trolling intended guys. C’mon, by this time tomorrow were all gonna be gagging with all the feel good warm fuzzy sanitized op eds and tributes scattered all over the internet and tv about Ms. Smith. I’m sure tonight Nancy Grace is going to have the inside story if Anna Nicole was murdered. I’m just saying what has to be said and what others are afraid to say. I have no sympathy for these kind of Hollywood celebs that are constantly paraded and bandied about in the media. I say state your contempt and disdain for these kind people that typify Hollywood and show biz. And Shooter, sorry you don’t get my brand of dark humour but you know that’s what’s going on with all the creeps in the world. Ok….I’ll also add I’m saddened for her kids but this is probably the best thing to happen to them. Perhaps they’ll now get a real mother that will be more of a positive influence in their lives.

The really interesting part of this story is yet to come. Depending on what was in ANS’s last will and testament, and who the beneficiaries of all that money are (should I presume that ANS’s daughter is principal beneficiary?), the custody/paternity war between her lawyer and her photographer could start to get REALLY ugly. For that matter, either one or both of those guys could have been involved in the suspicious circumstances surrounding her death as well. Greta Van Sustern will have PLENTY of material for months to come.
(Oh, what a tangled web we weave.)

Collapsing and dying. Isn’t that the same way her son died?
Granted Anna wasn’t going to cure cancer or figure out the space elevator, but she really seemed to be a in a good place with her daughter, happy to be a mom with millions of bucks.
Now she’s dead and her lawyer/husband is in control of the estate and their (maybe) daughter.

I think for some it comes under the heading of “cautionary tale.” For so many people, not just “American Idol” America (think “Captains of Industry”), they muddle together success-money-fame-notoriety with happiness. Here’s someone who stood to inherit millions, was idolized by many (tho’ in a gawking way) but seemed never particularly happy.
I pretty much agree with your country-on-the-way-down-the-tubes analysis, but certain personal aspects of life occasionally strike the “Oof!…” chord.

Rest in peace, ANS. It is a tragedy for any person and for that person’s family.
I wish the media would announce it and then largely let it go, keeping coverage to a minimum, rather than making a ridiculous spectacle out of it. If only the MSM would devote half as much coverage to our fallen soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan as they will spend on this single death.
On the bright side, it almost certainly won’t be as much of a spectacle as the death of Princess Di.

allie on February 8, 2007 at 6:40 PM
By the way, her son’s death was unusual but it was not suspicious. He had low levels of three different drugs (including methadone) in his system and he had a rare, but explicable, reaction to the three drugs. It wasn’t as if he received a massive dose of opiates or was given cyanide, digitalis, or arsenic.
tommy1 on February 8, 2007 at 6:40 PM
True, tommy1, methadone is crazy stuff. It seems there have been quite a few deaths attributed to it lately.
NTWR on February 8, 2007 at 6:46 PM
NTWR
Even weirder than methadone is the synthetic junk opiate “Darvon” (or, in other formulations, “Darvocet”) which is a brand name for dextropropoxyphene. In terms of analgesic strength, this stuff has only two-thirds the activity of codeine but is implicated a large percentage of deaths from adverse reactions. The FDA had hearings on dextropropoxyphene back in the 80s but didn’t remove it from the market because of a PR campaign by Eli Lilly.
The stuff is garbage and should be avoided. If a doctor ever tries to prescribe it to you, demand codeine instead.
tommy1 on February 8, 2007 at 6:56 PM
Unfortunate.
I don’t have anything much to say one way or another about ANS. I thought she was horribly exploited her entire adult life, but it also seemed she brought much of it upon herself, and indeed enjoyed the attention.
I do have something to say about bashing someone at their passing. I very nearly prevented my own enlistment in the Navy, because while standing in line at the L.A. AAFES station, the news of Randy Rhoad’s death hit. Some idiot a few people away from me in line said something very unkind, and I prompty unhinged his jaw for him. He didn’t know Randy, had no right to speak as he did. Yes, celebrities get less protection from unkindness than most, but that is no excuse for the rude, disturbed, wicked things some have said here. Be ashamed.

It is always sad to hear such tragic news.
A few points: a) There will be no autopsy photos. Florida passed some strick laws following the death of Dale Earnhardt. b) Based on your definitions of porn, I think some of you must be lawyers for Bill Clinton.

I just emailed AP… I was flipping through the channels to get away from Inside Edition and crossed CNN, just as Jack Cafferty said, “Is Anna Nicole still dead, Wolf?”
I always kind of felt sorry for her. I hope she’s in a better place.
Bob Owens on February 8, 2007 at 7:43 PM
No one can explain how her son got ahold of methadone. Not even the special doctor they hired to do the autopsy.
Also, there are rumors that the baby had small traces of methadone in her system–possibly carried over from ANS. Was ANS being drugged all this time, in an attempt to lead up to this?
The scumbag lawyer, Howard K. Stern, was in the hospital room when her son died, and was in the hotel room when ANS died. This screams suspcious to me.
That baby needs to not go to either of those two men, and needs to go instead to ANS’s mother or other living family members, because something is incredibly wrong here. If ANS would have died first, and then her son 5 months later, this would scream suspicion of murder.
Enoxo on February 8, 2007 at 7:45 PM
What a tragedy. I remember the GUESS? jeans ads as well and I thought she was a dream. She lost so much in her life before she lost her own and that’s a shame. I feel for her baby daughter who will never know her mother except by that Godawful show and Playboy. It seems that after Playboy, she either lost control or just let materialism get the best of her. Adding to that, she’s becoming a subject of lawsuits lately (first about the paternity issue, and then a couple days ago she was named a defendant in a suit against Trimspa). She’s exactly what you don’t want to become after you become famous. I hope she finds peace.

You’d think she was Saddaam Hussein by some of the posts on here. There are probably millions who live like she did but not in the public eye. Have some respect. A reporter friend tonight mentioned she was lonely. I’ll bet the fame and beauty didn’t help in that regard……May she rest in peace.
