Gore: China shouldn’t have to go green until America does

He had two options. Take his own global-warming platform seriously by encouraging all countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as expeditiously as they can? Or work a nonsensical wealth-based double standard in there to thrill and delight “the international community”?
Environmentalist or leftist? Choices, choices.
Emerging economies such as China are justified in holding back on fighting greenhouse gas emissions until richer polluters like the United States do more to solve the problem, former Vice President Al Gore said Wednesday…
Chinese officials said they would act after industrial countries such as the United States and others make changes themselves, Gore said, addressing a conference in Madrid on global warming.
“They’re right in saying that. But we have to act quickly,” said Gore, who was nominated last week for a Nobel Peace Prize for his work in drawing attention to global warming.
“China’s reaction to the scientific report last week was disappointing, but it was instructive,” Gore said.
Exit question: Does this class-based exception to the scourge of glacier-melting help or hinder his Nobel chances?
Update: Here’s a little more good PR for the Gorebot, who’s making friends in all the right places.

Re: exit question—it definitely helps his chances. It bashes the US and also tweaks Euro-guilt—a two-fer.

How does he explain that people in Beijing walk around wearing masks, while people in L.A. don’t?
budorob on February 8, 2007 at 3:20 PM
Why does the Gore/Clinton group have such a hard-on for the Chicoms in letting them do almost anything they want?
Defector01 on February 8, 2007 at 3:20 PM
Another question: Where in Gore’s education or career gives him any qualifications to spout off on climatology?
frankj on February 8, 2007 at 3:20 PM
Appealing to communists can only help is Nobel chance. Plus, it might get him a hot date with Theron as well. He’s thinkin’ with both his heads today!
Gore’s lookin’ to land 2 happy endings in one speech. Two-fers are awesome!
lorien1973 on February 8, 2007 at 3:21 PM
its amazing how someone so boring keeps getting recognition. maybe we should have a “consensus” saying that he should crawl back into his hole

OT, but very important:
I assume this is a life saving measure?
Andy in Agoura Hills on February 8, 2007 at 3:30 PM
Maybe a little bit off topic, but not much.
Labamigo on February 8, 2007 at 3:32 PM
Helps his Nobel chances, but I wonder what this does for his standing with true believers in global warming. It’s going to take some serioius logical gymnastics to reconcile the urgency with reducing emissions with his “China can keep polluting as long as the U.S. hasn’t gone first” mantra.
thirteen28 on February 8, 2007 at 3:34 PM
Sure. Makes total sense. Why should a country with 4 times our population, with more people on Earth, with a still exploding population … and basically no environmental standards whatsoever … have to actually limit emissions and stuff.
That’s silly. More to the point, taking your limo to a protest in Santa Cruz is way, way better than flying to Beijing. It’s dirty, crowded, and they might eat your dog. Plus, the pollution is horrible.
Professor Blather on February 8, 2007 at 3:34 PM
The only real qualification you need to be an expert on climatology is to be a leftist kook. Any climatologist who doesn’t completely embrace the religion of leftism is immediately burned at the stake as a heretic… that’s where they get this so-called consensus of theirs.
Watcher on February 8, 2007 at 3:36 PM
Dunno about his Nobel chances (though I would agree with thirteen28, but it seals the deal on his Oscars for best fiction.
steveegg on February 8, 2007 at 3:36 PM
Oh, yes, I’m sure after we’ve hobbled our own economy, the Chinese won’t take the opportunity to gain the economic upper hand yet again.
Trust, but don’t verify. Watchwords of the left.
Mark V. on February 8, 2007 at 3:36 PM
I visited China back in 2001. There are no pollution standards to speak of. The skies across most of the country are a filthy dark grey from morning to night, and the stench in the air is unbearable. I never saw a clean pond, lake or river, they were all polluted.
Now this backward country with over a billion citizens is evolving from bicycle transport to the automobile, and Algore wants to give them a pass? Hey Al, you and BJ gave them missile and satellite technology, wasn’t that enough?
fogw on February 8, 2007 at 3:37 PM
Why am I not surprised he said this on foriegn soil???
PinkyBigglesworth on February 8, 2007 at 3:40 PM
Which “true believers”? The ones that actually give a shinola about the alleged core tenet of Global Warming, or the ones that have “hijacked” the religion of Global Warming to incessantly bash the US and capitalism?
steveegg on February 8, 2007 at 3:41 PM
And Gore shouldn’t have to go green until China does, right?
ballz2wallz on February 8, 2007 at 3:44 PM
He’ll clean them out long before we drown (unless, of course, he does so over one of the poles and all of his gas melts the ice caps due to direct exposure).
steveegg on February 8, 2007 at 3:44 PM
We have a winner!
steveegg on February 8, 2007 at 3:44 PM
Oh, like just cuz you’ve been there you’ve got some personal insight or knowledge.
Please. I know everything about everything. I read blogs. And they tell me global warming is real and that China is a happy Bush-free paradise, almost as nice as Cuba and Venuzuela.
Now pay attention: that “personal knowledge boosts credibility” argument can ONLY be used when disparaging President Bushitler and the other Chicken Hawks. Then it makes sense.
Sheesh. Didn’t you get the memo?
Professor Blather on February 8, 2007 at 3:45 PM
Nope, that’s not it.
SHOW ME THE MONEY!!! Cost big bucks to be a Clinton/Gore.
KelliD on February 8, 2007 at 3:47 PM
Don’t greenhouse gasses circle the planet!!!!!!!
If so, then how, exactly, are we suppose to fix the problem while they are pumping out these gasses?????
I suppose BigAl can tell Chinese gas from US gas from EU gas!
Dread Pirate Roberts VI on February 8, 2007 at 3:50 PM
I say we don’t “go green” until Burkina Faso does. Gore is such a freakin’ idiot. I’m speechless…
x95b10 on February 8, 2007 at 3:51 PM
OT, but very important:
Reality star Anna Nicole Smith has been found unresponsive in her Hard Rock Hotel room in Hollywood, Fla., FOX affiliate WSVN is reporting.
She has been taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.
According to a local report, a witness said paramedics were pumping her chest when they took her out of the hotel.
I assume this is a life saving measure?
Andy in Agoura Hills on February 8, 2007 at 3:30 PM
she’s dead, fsn just said it
pmoshields on February 8, 2007 at 3:53 PM
As I recall, back when the Kyoto accords were being negotiated, the Senate - by a resolution of 95-0 - specifically advised Gore (who was acting as the US negotiator) not to agree to terms that would exempt countries like China and India from the emissions limitations.
And then Gore set forth to do exactly what the Senate told him not to do.
Small wonder that Clinton never bothered putting the Kyoto accords up for a ratification vote after that.
But I’ll say this for Gore, at least he’s consistent (if foolishly so).
Spurius Ligustinus on February 8, 2007 at 4:03 PM
The ones the truly believe the “science” (cough, cough) behind global warming.
Because, you know, there is a consensus* among the world’s scientists that man-made global warming is real.
* = except for those scientist that don’t believe it.
thirteen28 on February 8, 2007 at 4:04 PM
Why does this stuff always pile up on the U.S.? Why can’t we ever look at it this way:
America is a young country that’s like a big dumb puppy (which is something I’ve heard/read from many Europeans) - therefore, the older, more mature countries (such as China) must lead the way in going green.
I mean, America has lost all global respect, correct? Then why should we believe that China (or any other country) will follow in our footsteps if we set a good example)? Perhaps these other countries should start setting the good example for us…..
Or are they worried it would kill their economies (because it would) and therefore want someone else to go first?

Drudge has it now. RIP sad lady.

How in the world can anyone take this clown seriously. What a gasbag. Restrict all that polluting hot air you’re releasing Gore.
darwin on February 8, 2007 at 4:33 PM
You mean the distinct minority of the members of that religion (”moderates”, or if you prefer, “Trotskyites”).
steveegg on February 8, 2007 at 4:36 PM
Obviously, Mr. Algore believes only rich, tax-evading, capitalist polar bears will suffer. What a total crock of cr@pola!
MCPO Airdale on February 8, 2007 at 4:44 PM
Gore lost all respect when he cancelled that debate with a skeptical climatologist.
Good point. I’ve been reading stories from various major media sources, and they seem to relate our Kyoto disagreement with the Bush Administration, not Clinton.
See, it’s all Bush’s fault again. Don’t we all feel a little better. I need one of those French mid-day naps now.
budorob on February 8, 2007 at 4:45 PM
Is there anyone who has a reference point for that resolution?
Labamigo on February 8, 2007 at 4:53 PM
China must capture manbearpig before we hunt for manbearpig. They have more manbearpigs. It’s common Algore sense.
Professor Blather on February 8, 2007 at 5:44 PM
I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again. Many leftists put a higher value on their world citizenship than their US citizenship. Al Gore is one of them.
But, whatever you do, don’t question their patriotism.
Matticus Finch on February 8, 2007 at 5:50 PM
Wait… America is not doing enough??? What the heck am I paying an extra 20 cents a gallon for air entrained fuel for, then? Why do I have the burden of taking my car to be smogged and then proving it to the gov’t before it can be legally registered or sold? What are those damn catalytic converters doing in cars? What the heck was up with MTBE being forced into the gas (and water) supply here in California? Why do I get tax deductions for buying “energy star” appliances?
If he REALLY wanted to thwart worldwide pollution, Mr. Gore would put forth a resolution saying the US will no longer import products from countries that aren’t environmentally responsible…
NTWR on February 8, 2007 at 5:50 PM
Have I mentioned that the Gorebot is a flaming idiot?
mcgilvra on February 8, 2007 at 5:54 PM
Ask and ye shall have found. That would be Senate Resolution 98, from the 1st Session of the 105th Congress. The vote on July 25, 1997 was 95-0. From the text of the approved resolution:
steveegg on February 8, 2007 at 5:57 PM
Oh, and before anybody (like Honora) goes off spouting how S.Res.98 was part of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy, take a closer look at the author of the resolution, which made it through unamended. It was Robert Byrd (D-WV)
steveegg on February 8, 2007 at 6:03 PM
Good post. If they hate us, they won’t follow us. Great thoughts.
Read “not paying enough…”

This makes sense. Get the U.N. on this message. Kofi himself should be revived to spread this good word. Al… Sell your giant SUVs and buy a Prius.
Griz on February 8, 2007 at 8:00 PM
How about the Kyoto protocol makes demands of China, just like the US, and then they can decide, just like us, whether they want to abide by them or not. The first step is to actually make demands of China. Of course, as I understand it, the Chinese were a gracious donor to the Clinton-Gore election machine……
Seixon on February 8, 2007 at 8:18 PM
I stopped the contest after this one.
TKO over a surprising honora (whose cheap shot a la Mexico v Clinton/Gore comes on the heals of yet another bitterly painful soccer loss to the gringos in Glendale - USA! USA!).

Every time I see that pic of Gore I imagine him fellating a melting glacier.
infidel4life on February 8, 2007 at 10:12 PM
A brilliant assessment! If Algore really loves China so much, perhaps he should just move there and make his bond with the Chi-coms complete. What on earth would we have done had this man been elected president in 2000?
Algore would really get more mileage out of his arguments if he would be more positive in his presentations, don’t you think? I’d personally be much more inclined to do something in response to “You can help our environment by doing x, y, and z,” within reason, as opposed to the windy, hypocritical, and condescending statements that he belches now. If, in 2000, he’d thrown his name and his clout to seeking and securing legitimate solutions and then advertising them, he’d surely have our nation exceeding that discriminatory Protocol’s standards by now, White House or not, ratification or not.
Oh, wait… I almost forgot. He’s a liberal. Such a plan would require disavowing socialism in favor of trying to work with the private sector. He’d never go for that.

Al Gore scares me.

Mr. Superego, get a grip, once again!
Entelechy on February 9, 2007 at 1:32 AM
What exactly is the penalty for putting a large portion of the planet’s population into fear and hyseria just for political gains, basing it on junk science, that the one person making the claim, who has no understanding, basis, or clue of what he is talking about?
Does Al Gore even know that there is an enormous ball of hydrogen gas, under immense pressure a Star called our “Sun” exists in our Solar System, and what it’s effects has on our daily life?
Mr. Gore…. it is my opinion that your statments today will go down in history…….. just maybe, not the way you wanted them to,
PinkyBigglesworth on February 9, 2007 at 3:01 AM
He has a Harvard Divinity degree. What is Eco-Leftism if not a faith-based religion?

Gore may be insane, but he isn’t stupid. He knows what people will pay him for.

I read the word “nuance” under Gore’s picture as “nuisance”… How appropriate….
PoliticallyIncorrectSandy on February 9, 2007 at 10:09 AM
Of course he’s dumping on the US. He’s trying to pick up votes for his Oscar and the Nobel. How else to you think he’s going to win?
Dread Pirate Roberts VI on February 9, 2007 at 10:34 AM
Does anyone have the link to the study’s, the scientific studies of proof that CO2 causes the greenhouse effect. It is my understanding that no such proof exists. It was written about and then adopted as truth, but no one has proved it. So far all of the indications show an increase in CO2, historically, does not relate to warmer climate. Sometimes it did, and sometimes it didn’t.
