Why wasn’t ‘No role’ included as a choice for that second question?
TABoLK on February 8, 2007 at 3:50 PM
So, eh, Shep Smith just looked me in the eye and told me that Anna Nicole Smith is dead through my TV…

Squaring the circle is easy:
First graph reflect reality. Second one reflects the UN, assuming it operated at peak efficiency, which it does not.
I’d prefer the UN handle things that aren’t in our national interest but that people whine about anyways. Uganda is perfectly capable of flying soldiers to stop the cleansing in Darfur, if it wants to. so is china, france, germany, etc.
lorien1973 on February 8, 2007 at 3:56 PM
Now I know how people felt when Kennedy was assassinated.
lorien1973 on February 8, 2007 at 3:58 PM
People think the poor performance of the UN is an epiphenomenon, not structural or fundamental. In fact, I would be willing to bet money that many of the people who think both “Leading Role” and “poor job” think the UN is doing a poor job because of President Bush’s intrasegience.
Annoying Old Guy on February 8, 2007 at 3:58 PM
I am trying to fit both the circle and the square into a triangle. I don’t know where/who/what Gallup polls but I don’t know a single person who thinks anything good about the Ungrateful Nations.
Limerick on February 8, 2007 at 4:01 PM
I think these results can be explained thusly: Most Americans are decent, optomistic people that really believe that good things are possible. And because the UN is widely advertised as being good, most Americans would rather give it another chance to play an important part in world affairs because they believe, deep down, that the UN can change and be an effective agent for positive change in the world.
In other words, most Americans are yahoo dumbasses. It’s like the 9/11 Truth episode of South Park (paraphrased of course):
Cartman: According to polls, one quarter of Americans think it’s possible that the government was responsible for 9/11. What are you saying, Stan? That one quarter of all Americans are idiots?
Stan: Yeah.
Kyle: At least one quarter.

Anna Nicole Smith just died.
The world comes to a stop.
Gregor on February 8, 2007 at 4:09 PM
The UN should be disbanded. At the very least, we can threaten to threaten to kind of sort of voice our disapproval of their ungrateful America bashing ways.
jman on February 8, 2007 at 4:10 PM
Perhaps more disturbing than the contradiction between these two polls is the fact that as of Feb 2007, 25% of Americans believe the UN is doing a “good job”.
Whether you believe the true purpose of the UN is to save the world or just to save the world from the US……either way, shouldn’t you think they’re doing a bad job?
JadeNYU on February 8, 2007 at 4:13 PM
I say, withdraw from the UN, and throw ‘em all out of NY. I’m pretty sure someone can find a better use for that prime Turtle Bay real estate. Let’s see how they do minus the 23% we pay the UN just to get crapped on.
Kid from Brooklyn on February 8, 2007 at 4:15 PM
No, we have to threaten to do this for at least 10 years first. This is what they understand.
jman on February 8, 2007 at 4:21 PM
The U.N. sukz. Period. It cannot be fixed. It is Corrupt. Worthless. And smells bad. A complete waste of resources, time and energy. The last Premier took it from doomed to completely silly wasted. Anyone who believes a word they say is a fool.
Griz on February 8, 2007 at 4:23 PM
America is like that friend that will take any abuse or hazing just so they can be invited to the party.
Why do we endure so much abuse from the same international community that takes advantage of our fruits and freedoms?
What the Fuu…?
budorob on February 8, 2007 at 4:28 PM
I would not put one more American taxpayer dollars into that stinking hole. The U.N. is nothing more than subsidized, institutional graft for third world kleptocrats.
MCPO Airdale on February 8, 2007 at 4:31 PM
UN: Useless Nincompoops.
Strangely enough, Anna still has relevance to that… anyway, i hope she finds peace.
Mazztek on February 8, 2007 at 4:33 PM
Too bad the morons in our country haven’t booted them out, maybe the terrorists could fly into the UN Buidling and save us all..
retired on February 8, 2007 at 4:52 PM
The US should pay dues to the UN on a pay as you do basis. So far, we owe them nothing. All we’re doing is enriching criminals and pompous diplomats.
darwin on February 8, 2007 at 4:58 PM
Soooooooooooooooo ture! This is an institution that has far outlived its’ usefulness.
Perhaps we could use the building for condos or something after we boot the freeloaders out.

budorob:
Cuz this country has been run by Left wing buracracies and Left politicians for over 60 years. Presidents really don’t count so much; congress to some extent; but, buracracies are like corporations, they have a life of their own committed to protecting their behinds so they can keep the job and the perks.
sharinlite on February 8, 2007 at 6:10 PM
Let’s start a fund drive at Halloween, like UNICEF used to do. We’ll raise money to send them to Venezuela. Either that, or we just demo the UN building while they’re gone for the weekend.

“I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education.”
—–Thomas Jefferson to W. Jarvis, 1820.
HerrMorgenholz on February 8, 2007 at 6:47 PM
Who are these 24% of Republicans who want the UN in a leading role.
Where are they?
Reaps on February 8, 2007 at 8:26 PM
Our work is really cut out for us, collectively, isn’t it?
Emmett J. on February 8, 2007 at 10:18 PM
That’s exactly right, and we’ve been enduring this humiliation for too long.
Coyote D. on February 8, 2007 at 11:07 PM
I too, believe the UN should removed from our country.
We pay to tolerate the international evil America , bashing of our government and our way of life.
Foreign diplomats receive “protection” and of course, diplomatic immunity from their criminal behavior on our shores. They also get a taste of the American Way of life, on the good side of that American Way, of course.
The singular reason I could see to allow them to remain in this country is the old adage:
Keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer.
At least we can see and hear what they are plotting against us, firsthand.
MITX on February 8, 2007 at 11:11 PM
The UN is the place where foreign aid is deposited into the accounts of front men of our political leaders. It is nothing but a money laundry for politicians.
The oil for food program is just the tip of the iceberg.
BTW-Where is the UN in our Constitution, I can’t find any mention of this in our Government Organizational Chart.
