Good point, Prof. These are the types who sign up just so they can make a circus of going AWOL. Who knows what kinds of treachery they’d commit against our own country to prove their point? BTW their mascot is a Banana Slug.

The Banana Slug, a bright yellow, slimy, shell-less mollusk found in the campus’s redwood forest, was the unofficial mascot for UC Santa Cruz’s coed teams since the university’s early years. The students’ adoption of such a lowly creature for a team mascot was their reaction to the fierce athletic competition fostered at most American universities. UCSC has always offered a wide-ranging physical education and recreation program designed to appeal to the greatest number of students, but it has based its approach on some unusual ideas: that athletics are for all students, not just team members of major sports; that the most important goal of a collegiate physical education department should be to introduce as many students as possible to lifelong physical activities; and that the joy of participating is more important than winning.

Even their mascot screams “slimebag loser.”

If the issue is the inability of the university to guarantee a “violence free” event, they CAN ask for police assistance from their city and county governments, or even the State of California. No doubt, they would receive whatever assistance they asked for.

Somehow I don’t think this is the “motivation” for canceling the job fairs. It’s just a convenient excuse. The “hearts and minds” of the university administration is WITH the students in this case as the libs running the university are anti-war and anti-military.

So, given the intransigence of the “protesters” and the school administration in indulging them, the best answer is for the federal government to KILL the federal student loan guarantee program for their students, KILL all federal grants to the university, and start arresting the student “leaders” for conspiracy to assault federal employees in the performance of their duties. If the school administration objects, then arrest the provost/chancellor/president, whomever, for felony obstruction of justice.

At least until such time that the university starts up the job fairs again under appropriate police protection. These job fairs ARE SUPPOSED to benefit graduating students in progressing in their chosen careers. By cancelling them because of the behavior of a few, they are denying ALL students of the opportunity to become productive members of society (and also tax-payers instead of tax-consumers).

Or, Arnold could simply order the university closed, and the property vacated of all students and faculty until the summer. Any students who refuse to leave get arrested for criminal trespass. Any students who riot get arrested for felony destruction of government property. Any students who interfere with the arrests, get arrested and charged with felony assault.

Why do this?

First, I am assuming that these students are NOT stupid. They are willfully violating the law in the belief that there are no consequences to them, personally. I would like to disabuse them of that idea.

Second, in my opinion, if you want to deter these students from violently opposing military recruitment on campus which they are empowered to do by federal law, then the way to their “hearts” and what passes for their mush-filled socialist “minds,” is to insure that when they apply for a job, they have to check the “yes” box that asks “have you ever been convicted of a felony?”

This is a CAREER KILLER for careers that require background checks (lawyer, doctor, school teacher, banker, Wall Street broker, real estate broker, etc.,) even for a job as a Wal-Mart employee.

There are NO consequences for disrupting a job fair. There ought to be, as our society is SUPPOSED to be “civil” (the behavioral meaning). As these protesters are refusing to behave civilly, and are depriving OTHERS of their right to peaceably assemble, then the issue becomes one of law enforcement. And if they still INSIST that their political views demand that they disrupt and interfere the rights of others, then they can reflect on their behavior for the rest of their lives as they sweep the floors of their local 7-11 stores at minimum wage.

Note, I am not talking about quelling protests against the government for the war or the military. I am simply suggesting how the excuse used by the university to CANCEL job fairs because the military (and the CIA) for that matter, also use them to meet their employment needs, can be vacated by a university that chooses to break the law.

This is an example of our country’s educated elite? Seriously, I’m glad they are anti-war. If they were responsible for fighting for anything at all worthwhile we’d all be screwed. As long as they are in the comfy confines of such a marvelous institution it will remain easy for them to foam over about a situation that they barely understand.

Soft, quishy little kid brains. Sad, really.

If they’re not shouting down someone else, what’s the point? It’s not as if they can persuasively debate the issues.

No student at UCSC is able to attend a job fair because they keep getting cancelled.

Over time no one will want to go to UCSC because they don’t have job fairs anymore, and as a result finding a job right out of college just got a bit more difficult.

Kid from Brooklyn – I believe there are all ready laws on the books concerning recruiter access to any university campus that receives federal funding.
