Prince, or The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, tricked the press at last night’s Halftime Show Press Conference. ‘Bout time someone shuts ‘em up:

Prince Sucks. Can’t the NFL find some decent entertainment for the halftime shows.

ScottyDog on February 5, 2007 at 1:18 PM

Well, that’s one way to shut ‘em up….

Exit Question: Will W, inspired by Prince, break out the skin flute at his next presser?

Kid from Brooklyn on February 5, 2007 at 1:22 PM

Sorry, ScottyDog, but I must disagree. I’m no fan, but Prince absolutely rocked last night, and managed to keep it family-friendly-ish.

Are you the same ‘Kid from Brooklyn’ on YouTube?

mimi on February 5, 2007 at 1:24 PM

I love it near the end when he riffs into Rock Lobster

greggish on February 5, 2007 at 1:24 PM

What a little prick.

angryamerican on February 5, 2007 at 1:26 PM

His dancers weren’t bad either.

infidel on February 5, 2007 at 1:26 PM

Love him or hate him he wouldn’t let the press goad him into a Janet moment. A ‘Booooosh!’ sound bite was what they wanted. He just wanted to adjust their hearing a bit.

Negative, Ghost Rider. I’m younger, and much more articulate. My takes are more surgical than bombast. That being said, Brooklyn’s a big place, and many Kids come from there. :)

Kid from Brooklyn on February 5, 2007 at 1:29 PM

Um, what exactly were they expecting when the drums, keyboards, microphone, PA, etc. are all set up and a band walks on stage?

If you really want to split hairs, he’s “The Kid…” whereas I’m just “Kid…”

Kid from Brooklyn on February 5, 2007 at 1:35 PM

Love his music or hate it, but you have to admit the kid can play- just about anything. Hottest dancers west of the DC strip clubs.

Scotsman on February 5, 2007 at 1:35 PM

LOL sorry you are MUCH more articulate & funny:)

Don’t forget bright, clean and nice-looking…I’m the storybook mainstream blog commenter! :P

Kid from Brooklyn on February 5, 2007 at 1:40 PM

I agree, xardoz… I’m not all that much of a fan, but I was VERY impressed with him during half-time.

And as you said, the fact that he kept it family friendly was impressive.

dalewalt on February 5, 2007 at 1:40 PM

Prince is freikin’ awsome.

Good Lt on February 5, 2007 at 1:41 PM

I love anyone who can stick it to the press… BTW, were those twins? Jus askin’

xardoz on February 5, 2007 at 1:23 PM

“ish” is certainly appropriate. I’m not saying that Prince did anything that needed to be censored, but there is no way that he was doing anything but proving how large his “manhood” is when that curtain came up.

A picture of the scene can be found here:

Prince gives the press the bird.

I love it.

One Angry Christian on February 5, 2007 at 1:58 PM

I have to say that Prince represents something quite rare, these days — a black man (okay, in the broad sense of the word) who not only appreciates the blues, rock n roll, Jimi Hendrix, soul, punk, New Wave, and R&B, but has managed to marinate himself in all of those influences over the years and come up with an end result that totally rocks.

The dancers are hot, too.

well said, and he doesn’t have to use trendy ghetto slang to sell albums.

One Angry Christian on February 5, 2007 at 2:05 PM

I made it up until ‘left a good job in the city’ broke last night, then I just had to bail.

I never thought I’d long for the days of Steven Tyler trying to feel up Mary J. Blige as halftime entertainment, but that’s what it’s come to.

Readymade on February 5, 2007 at 2:06 PM

I don’t care what anyone says - Prince rocks.

pullingmyhairout on February 5, 2007 at 2:06 PM

He’s no “Up With People” but he’s awright.

jdpaz on February 5, 2007 at 2:09 PM

I thought Prince was fantastic last night. I’m happy that we’ve gone past the trend of a few years back (the MTV-produced halftime days) where three or four artists would try to split up 10 minutes and it would end up looking like a train wreck.

The true crime against humanity was the Cirque performance in the pre-show. Oy.

RMSpuhler on February 5, 2007 at 2:10 PM

For the record, Prince, yes, just Prince, dropped that symbol as his official name back in 2000. Referring to him as TAFKAP (the Artist Formerly Known as Prince) is no longer required. The publicity stunt served its purpose though.

Mancipium on February 5, 2007 at 2:13 PM

Oh, and yeah, Prince rocked it last night. That man can put on a show.

Mancipium on February 5, 2007 at 2:14 PM

Loved it.

RMSpuhler on February 5, 2007 at 2:10 PM

I was wondering if I was the only one feeling the after effects of that……. Great Cesear’s Ghost! We finally saw a visual representation into the mind of a liberal!

Prince…….. you are a very talented musician. Well done!

PinkyBigglesworth on February 5, 2007 at 2:16 PM

It took me a minute to figure out what that Foo Fighters cover was. That was pretty awesome.

Jim Treacher on February 5, 2007 at 2:23 PM

Let’s hope that punking the media at press conferences becomes a trend. Maybe they will have to resort to real reporting.

Valiant on February 5, 2007 at 2:29 PM

Now that’s what I’m talking about. Damn, that guy can play!

Pablo on February 5, 2007 at 2:30 PM

Mancipium, I prefer to call him TAFKA”TAFKAP”

Halftime show trivia: “Up With People” has performed in the most Super Bowl shows X, XIV, XVI & XX. In fact only one other performer has headlined a Superbowl halftime show more than once — Gloria Estefan in XXIX & XXXIII.

Disclaimer: this is based on 5 minutes of research and is open to correction.

jdpaz on February 5, 2007 at 2:32 PM

Funny…I was never a fan of Prince during the ’80s and ’90s, but found that I really enjoyed his halftime performance. I’d forgotten just how well the guy can play guitar.

flipflop on February 5, 2007 at 2:36 PM

The publicity stunt served its purpose though.

Mancipium on February 5, 2007 at 2:13 PM

Wasn’t really a publicity stunt. I believe it had to do with him trying to get out of a contract with Warner Bros.

The first step I have taken towards the ultimate goal of emancipation from the chains that bind me to Warner Bros. was to change my name from Prince to Image:prince symbol.svg. Prince is the name that my Mother gave me at birth. Warner Bros. took the name, trademarked it, and used it as the main marketing tool to promote all of the music that I wrote. The company owns the name Prince and all related music marketed under Prince. I became merely a pawn used to produce more money for Warner Bros.… I was born Prince and did not want to adopt another conventional name. The only acceptable replacement for my name, and my identity, was Image:prince symbol.svg, a symbol with no pronunciation, that is a representation of me and what my music is about. This symbol is present in my work over the years; it is a concept that has evolved from my frustration; it is who I am. It is my name.

Via the pedia.

spmat on February 5, 2007 at 2:41 PM

Disclaimer:

Carol Channing in IV and VI.

I hope I’m done with the trivia now.

Conclusion: “Up With People” must be awesome…followed by Gloria Estefan and Carol Channing. About this there can be no debate.

jdpaz on February 5, 2007 at 2:46 PM

That was actually………..good! He sure can grind that axe. Wow!

Sammy316 on February 5, 2007 at 2:47 PM

Prince is a great musician and I think he pulled off the farce that the Super Bowl halftime is pretty well.

Regarding Prince and his name change. It was not a publicity stunt at heart. Warner owned the name Prince and due to a dispute with Warner, Prince wanted to release music independently and was forced to use another name.

None of the presstitutes threw their panties on the stage?

baldilocks on February 5, 2007 at 2:55 PM

The press conference was better than the half-time show, go figure.

Lawrence on February 5, 2007 at 3:02 PM

At least he didn’t come out in dread locks and insist that questions only be about hair.

RightWinged on February 5, 2007 at 3:03 PM

Well technically he did take questions. He just didn’t answer any.

MirCat on February 5, 2007 at 3:06 PM

I really dig his new backup singers.

The Ugly American on February 5, 2007 at 3:11 PM

Prince is one of the most talented pop musicians out there and he has been since he started. He plays, composes, arranges and sings. He puts on a great show electric or acoustic.

robo on February 5, 2007 at 3:30 PM

Bush should have hired him instead of Tony Snow.

Prince for White House Press Secretary! He knows how to really shut them up! Even the biggest Bush haters in the White House press room would not be audible over that! :-) .

IndependentConserv on February 5, 2007 at 3:34 PM

Do all Jehovas Witnesses rock this massive?
Showing his age a bit, but when he’s on, he’s on. Good for him. If he can now keep his act clean (but please keep those dancers), he’ll be a pariah among the “hip hop” (= no talent) crowd. Might be interesting…

Halley on February 5, 2007 at 3:51 PM

“Chuck? This is your cousin, Marvin. Marvin Berry?! You know that new sound you’ve been looking for? Well, listen to this!”

uptight on February 5, 2007 at 3:56 PM

He was playing so great that at one time as he was walking back towards his band his hand wasn’t on the strings and his guitar was still playing…simply magic.

right2bright on February 5, 2007 at 4:05 PM

r2br

his hand wasn’t on the strings

that’s called hammering. You’ll notice that his left hand is still on (it’s doing the hammering). He did that in a couple spots.

I was never a fan of Prince, however I thought his half time show was very good and entertaining for someone I never thought I’d sit and listen to.I guess I am growing in my boomer years.

bones47 on February 5, 2007 at 4:36 PM

Remember when the FOOTBALL game was the important part of the Super Bowl??? And halftime was the 20 minutes (not 15 or 30) you could take a pee and get a hot dog??? Grambling State College Marching Band performed at the first Super Bowl, and a good halftime it was. This Prince guy just makes a bunch of very loud noise. The NFL has sold it soul to the TV producers for the almighty buck. Capitalism is good, but hell, isn’t anyone scrupulous anymore??? Start the damn game at 1:00pm, and screw the parties and other bullsh!t.

RightWinged on February 5, 2007 at 3:03 PM

an’ how! boy did you pick up on something there. you know what had me concerned? that bunch of wires and circuit boards he was fiddling with on the floor there, why didn’t the bomb squad come and detonate that? there was no way to tell that thing was anything but a bomb.

(looks suspiciously at coffee maker)

jummy on February 5, 2007 at 5:31 PM

that was a whole lot of rock up there. i’ve been fairly loyal to prince over the years. the man can funk, the man can new wave, the man can soul, and throuout you’d always get a glimpse that the man can stadium rock a guitar like nobody’s business. i hope his next release if full of this stuff.

jummy on February 5, 2007 at 5:35 PM

You can dislike his music, or his style, but Prince definitely does not suck.

JeffB. on February 5, 2007 at 5:49 PM

Prince is a lame choice for a superbowl Halftime show….

They ought to have Metallica, or AC/DC, or someone else who knows how to ROCK.

Jones Zemkophill on February 5, 2007 at 5:52 PM

Best halftime show I can ever remember - staging, lighting, and the surreal “Purple Rain” moment was perfect.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been to his club here in Vegas a few times on Wednesdays (free night) and he’s often there mingling around, he often jams onstage with the guest bands that play there, and he’s usually pretty nice to people in the club that get to meet him. He really is a damn good guitar player and performer, hammer-on guitar tricks aside.

Benthoven on February 5, 2007 at 6:56 PM

Hendrix rip-off. Mariginal talent.

Metro on February 5, 2007 at 6:57 PM

Prince’s was better than I thought it would be. To bad he didn’t do “Jack U Off”. My first impression when I heard that Prince and Billy Joel were performing was “Wow, what a bunch of old has-beens.” Maybe because I consider myself an old has-been at this point in my life. Hey, maybe next year they’ll have David Cassidy and Rick Springfield perform! AWESOME!!!!!!

vcferlita on February 5, 2007 at 6:59 PM

Sure, let’s get Metallica–that band that sued their fans over downloading music which thus killed their careers. I’ve seen them in concert many times. All I can remember is one very loud bass beat…over and over. Oh and a lot of screeching. I doubt they’d do a halftime show. Too busy counting their money! HA!

Prince is probably the most talented musician of our time. From writing to producing and recording–the man does it all. And well.

robblefarian on February 5, 2007 at 7:26 PM

I’m (un)officially starting the campaign to get Stuck Mojo for next year’s half-time show!
Who’s with me!?!?

TBinSTL on February 5, 2007 at 7:35 PM

I was amazed. That was without a doubt the absolute best ever halftime show.

I took my daughter to a Prince concert so 20 years ago, i was fabulous and by all measure he remains an artist with few peers.

I also appreciate the fact that as an artist, he entertains and does not pontificate.

My only problem is he hasn’t found a satisfactory replacement for Sheena E. - and of course I wanted him to do, “When doves cry”.

MikeG on February 5, 2007 at 7:38 PM

The same question crossed my mind d1carter, were the girls in white, twins? They sure did look like it to me, but we never got a close-up.

Maxx on February 5, 2007 at 8:07 PM

We’ve all been guilty of it at some point or another, but you’ve just had your “don’t know nothin’, don’t say nothin’” moment of the day. :)

Hottest dancers west of the DC strip clubs.

I’ve heard the dancers from North Carolina are even hotter..problem is after you see them, you get locked up and they get a scholarship.

and of course I wanted him to do, “When doves cry”.

Are you kidding? If they’d done that song, with the game Grossman was having, he’d have shot himself..

austinnelly on February 5, 2007 at 11:23 PM

Wow. Thx - even better the 2nd time!

RD on February 6, 2007 at 4:09 AM

Too bad Tito Puente passed away!

I would LOVE to see the Superbowl house rocked by Tito’s tight, funky, Latin rhythms, and his manos del fuego - hands of fire, as he lays down the most awsome, get up on your feet and dance Timbale magic!

His son is leading his orchestra now.

Thanks for the great music, Tito!!!!

When is Brian Setzer and his orchestra going to play?
