Video: PETA’s rejected Super Bowl ad

I’m not sure whether to give you the official content warning on this one. Do heavy handed innuendo and atmospheric skeeviness really warrant a viewer advisory?

All the same, you probably wouldn’t want someone to catch you watching it.

As crass as it is, it’s brilliantly efficient in the way it manages to hit PETA’s two target audiences with one stone: young hipsters, who’ll appreciate the ’70s porn conventions ironically, and graying leftists, who’ll appreciate them earnestly/wistfully.

Exit question: What would a conscientious, pro-animal-rights feminist say?

No need to smear people on the left. It’s a horrible commercial.

Nonfactor on February 5, 2007 at 5:46 PM

I hate PETA with the white-hot fury of a thousand suns.

Il Padrino on February 5, 2007 at 5:49 PM

They key word here is “can”.

Eat organic or free range and you won’t have to worry ’bout all those nasty additives.

Besides, it tastes better anyway.

The Ugly American on February 5, 2007 at 5:54 PM

AlahP you should have put up a statement that any “people eatingtasty animals” or such jokes will be banned.

Mazztek on February 5, 2007 at 5:58 PM

I think I remember that one.

ReubenJCogburn on February 5, 2007 at 5:59 PM

I like it. It’s on-message, targets the right groups, and entertains. But the crotch shot would never make it on network tv. Lascivious is the word. By the way, just thinking, is meat really likely as a primary cause for impotence? ‘Cause I think it might be more of the stuff below.

- Diseases and conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or thyroid conditions, poor circulation, low testosterone, depression, spinal cord injury, nerve damage (for example, from prostate surgery), or neurologic disorders (like multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease)
- Certain medications such as blood pressure medication (especially beta-blockers), heart medication (such as digoxin), some peptic ulcer medications, sleeping pills, and antidepressants
- Nicotine, alcohol, or cocaine
- Stress, fear, anxiety, or anger
- Unrealistic sexual expectations, which make sex a task rather than a pleasure
- Poor communication with your partner
- A “vicious cycle” of doubt, failure, or negative communication that reinforces the erection problems

exit question – Who’s more likely to have a vicious cycle of doubt, a happily married meat-eater, or a (horn-wearing) attendee at a PETA protest?

carlitos on February 5, 2007 at 6:01 PM

As a young hipster who appreciates cheesy 70s porn in both ironic and other ways on a pretty much daily basis, I feel obliged to comment that this commercial only slightly made me fear for my wang.

Savage on February 5, 2007 at 6:01 PM

Great…

I live in an apartment full of evangelicals (myself included) and now I think the neighbors may think they’ve caught one of us watching porn, based on the audio. Thanks a lot PETA…

JamesVersusEveryone on February 5, 2007 at 6:03 PM

I love animals. They’re delicious.

RedWinged Blackbird on February 5, 2007 at 6:07 PM

I am a proud, lifetime member of the other PETA. People who Eat Tasty Animals.

Centurion68 on February 5, 2007 at 6:08 PM

James, how the crap do I get Zombie Smasher X to run?

Savage on February 5, 2007 at 6:08 PM

If God didn’t want us to eat animals, he wouldn’t have made them out of meat.

Dr. Gecko on February 5, 2007 at 6:10 PM

They should show the VP of Peta shooting up with the drug that keeps her alive and was developed using animals.
The real truth in advertising.

right2bright on February 5, 2007 at 6:14 PM

I hate PETA with the white-hot fury of a thousand suns.

Il Padrino on February 5, 2007 at 5:49 PM

Then you’ll appreciate this picture. People eating tasty animals indeed.

I eat dead animals every day. Even the hippie girlfriend is a meat eater. (Heh.) Take that, PETA! Then again, the last time they went to check my cholesterol, bacon came out. I thought a cholesterol level of 40 was good, but apparently it isn’t when it’s in pounds. Who knew?

ReubenJCogburn on February 5, 2007 at 6:21 PM

What I find amazing is that these celebrities who claim to be PETA spokespersons and then sport Breast Implants, Fake Teeth, Lips and go through multiple cosmetic surgeries!!!! The amount of animal testing that goes into bringing those procedures to the market place is huge. And how sick is it that these animal tests are conducted for the most part because of vanity? It’s not like they are used to save lives. Even the hair dyes these hypocrits use are tested. Nothing like Pam Anderson telling us all that we should not eat meat when she is sporting big old implants that are approved because of animal testing. What a bunch of crap. Why do so many celebrities feel that they can tell us all what to do, but they are somehow exempt? And PETA is silent on all this.

Il Padrino on February 5, 2007 at 5:49 PM

That about sums up my own feelings perfectly.

Too bad, really. If they were actually an organization dedicated to ensuring that animals are treated ethically, I’d support them whole-heartedly.

Instead, they wandered way off the deep end years ago, and it’s all about politics; actually worrying about animals has little to do with PETA.

I’d guess the average meat-eating redneck hunter does more actual good regarding conservation and actually being “ethical” towards animals than 1,000 PETA yuppie hipsters.

It’d be funny, it it weren’t so sad.

Then again, “it’d be funny, it it weren’t so sad” pretty much sums up all of liberalism these days, doesn’t it?

Professor Blather on February 5, 2007 at 6:31 PM

Then you’ll appreciate this picture.

That one’s a keeper.

I’d guess the average meat-eating redneck hunter does more actual good regarding conservation and actually being “ethical” towards animals than 1,000 PETA yuppie hipsters.

Approximately 75% of the money spent on wildlife conservation comes from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses and taxes on hunting and fishing equipment.

RedWinged Blackbird on February 5, 2007 at 6:37 PM

As a veterinarian let me say this. PETA is nothing but a group of terrorists, that according to the government’s definition of terror since 9/11, should cause the group to be abolished and it’s assets seized. If PETA were to ever have it’s way, or even partly get its way, what you and I would pay for a good old fashioned meal would cost an arm and a leg. (ours, not the cows). They are deceitful, duplicitous and are a group that has no morals whatsoever and will do anything (illegal, unethical, or (in)humanely)to achieve their goals. Any group that is run by a woman who feels that a boy is of equal value in life to an animal is a group of useless minds.

Is the brunette the one that did their “state of the union”?

I eat meat all the time and I “F” like a banshee…

GoodBoy on February 5, 2007 at 7:22 PM

PETA’s ad was rejected by the Super Bowl. Maybe there’s hope for the world after all.

Maxx on February 5, 2007 at 7:25 PM

When did meat start causing impotence? How did we get this far, then?

frankj on February 5, 2007 at 7:32 PM

The reason we have incisor teeth is to rip, tear, shred and slash meat from the bones of animals, fish and fowl. Don’t fight nature, have a big honking steak,.. medium rare.

Yeah, let’s all go buy zucchinis, wooo!

Seixon on February 5, 2007 at 8:50 PM

It isn’t crass, AP. It’s dumb. And lame.

spmat on February 5, 2007 at 9:14 PM

I was going to make a zucchinis reference but:

Thank you. I too would strangle every chimpanzee in the world with my bare hands to cure one street junkie with AIDS. Good thing I don’t have to, though.

spmat on February 5, 2007 at 9:31 PM

How many animals can PETA kill with those Superbowl ad savings?

Valiant on February 5, 2007 at 9:36 PM

Read somewhere that if God didn’t intend for us to eat animals, he shouldn’t have made ‘em out of meat.

JustTruth101 on February 5, 2007 at 11:36 PM

This ad has been around for a while. I’m not sure where I’ve seen it before, but it’s definitely not new.

Gregor on February 5, 2007 at 11:39 PM

One month until International EATAPETA Day: March 15, 2007.

A vegan lifestyle causes a thinning of the brain insulation; causing moonbattiness and worship of Al Gore and Hep-C Queen Pamela Anderson.

Black Adam on February 6, 2007 at 1:10 AM

I agree with Il Padrino.

Why isn’t Ingrid Newkirk rotting away in Gitmo like the terrorist she is?

georgej on February 6, 2007 at 1:12 AM

Not a bad ad at all, and suprisingly not as filled with hyperbole as your average PETA campaign. In fact, if it wasn’t for the logo at the end of the advert, I’m not sure if I would’ve suspected them to be behind it. I wouldn’t give it a content warning, but I would‘ve given it a ‘volume’ warning..

Reaps on February 6, 2007 at 1:50 AM

This is a little OT, but I thought it was funny so here goes….This was emailed to me tonight…most of you have probably seen it, but there might be someone that missed it.

csdeven on February 6, 2007 at 2:31 AM

Then you’ll appreciate this picture. People eating tasty animals indeed.

ReubenJCogburn on February 5, 2007 at 6:21 PM

That picture was awesome!

You know what’s really sad? Despite all their demagogery, despite their years of open hatred for the human race, despite their unbelievable hypocrisy, people actually think they are an animal rights organization. Of course, most people think the ACLU is a civil rights organization, so I guess I shouldn’t be too shocked.

Wolfman on February 6, 2007 at 2:33 AM

I don’t like PETA, I do oppose cruel, inhumane, abusive treatment of animals, I do love creatures-animals of all kinds, including insects, reptiles, lizards, cetaceans, pachyderms, equine, bovine, feline, birds, bats, all of them, including our cat. I don’t eat animals, and I don’t miss eating them. Disclaimer: I don’t like fleas, mosquitos, flies, or ticks, so there are some exceptions.

I’ve found that food can be quite delicious without seasoning the food with dead animal carcass, or dead animal parts. It helps if you have some culinary skill, or if you treat yourself and your loved ones to some excellent restaurants – Italian, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Mediterranean, Mexican, Spanish, Vietnamese, Pacific Rim, Burmese, Senegalese, and so on. Such great selection, so nutritious, so tasty, and so good for you, and all without meat if you choose.

William2006 on February 6, 2007 at 6:03 AM

wonder how many puppies ended up in a dumpster in the making of that comercial?

One Angry Christian on February 6, 2007 at 11:10 AM

The main watchdog of PETA tactics, the Center for Consumer Freedom has been running ads in Virginia documenting the PETA workers that were charged with dumping dead animals in a vacant lot, and the numerous other animals that they kill each year.
