TMZ: David Lee Roth rejoins Van Halen

posted at 6:10 pm on February 2, 2007 by Allahpundit

They got the good word from Eddie himself. On the bass, replacing Michael Anthony: Wolfgang Van Halen, who wasn’t even a glint in his old man’s eye when Dave last recorded with the band.

First this, now this. How long before the much anticipated Culture Club reunion?

Yeah, yeah. I bet they don’t even make it half way through the tour before killing each other. Didn’t work in the past, isn’t gonna work this time. DLR has gone well over the edge- permanently.

Scotsman on February 2, 2007 at 6:14 PM

The plus side is after BTR punches out EVH he can administer first aid.

bbz123 on February 2, 2007 at 6:16 PM

oops, I meant DLR, he makes me think od a BLT for some reason.

TOO LITTLE TOO LATE.

jummy on February 2, 2007 at 6:19 PM

Last saw them in 1986 with Hagar. Doubt I will be rushing to catch them now. First time I saw them was at the Cap Centre in DC during the VHII album with DLR, they were much better back then..still love their first album(boy am I dating myself with the album reference and concerts I saw).

still468 on February 2, 2007 at 6:21 PM

They should have Dr. Phil play the bass.

I saw DLR at a county fair a few years ago, just out of curiosity. He never finished a single song. I had a much better time viewing the bearded lady…….

Don’t worry Savage, your time will come.

One day your favorite band will be doing a reunion tour and some kid on a hologram-blog or something will say “you guys are old”

DAYUM!

First album SCREAMED! ALL down hill after that IMHO. Valerie bought Eddie a Casio keyboard for Christmas and he pulled a John Edwards and “channeled” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. “Jump”?!?!? WTF??? You go from “Eruption” and “Runnin’ with the devil” to “Jump”???!!???!!?

David don’t look so good these days either.(Of course he made the coroner’s job a bit easier. He’s already half pickled)

I give it a week on the road. David will be arrested and Eddie will refuse to post bail.

I’d like to hear little Wolfie though. A bass player influenced by Eddie Van Halen? THAT could be awesome.

Alex VH SMOKED on drums. Never got the recognition he deserved.

Where’s my leather jacket?

Funny but kind of sick story, when walking to a class during finals a girl jumped out of the 16th floor of Waterson Towers at Illinois State University, somehow she survived and was taken to the hospital. After I got out of class and was walking back to my dorm as I approached Waterson Towers again (it was 26 stories high) several dozen rooms had synchronized this song and were blaring it for the whole town to hear.

Capitalist Infidel on February 2, 2007 at 7:14 PM

All down hill after the first album? You do realize that in between VH1 and 1984 there was VH2, Women and Children First, Fair Warning, and Diver Down don’t you? That is some of the best Rock ever produced. Here is a good Van Halen site for those (like me) who can’t get enough of The Mighty Van Halen.

Scot on February 2, 2007 at 7:16 PM

The latest Rolling Stone has a huge article on this, and TMZ is not exactly accurate assuming the RS article is correct. Eddie Van Halen told RS that DLR will be back with VH for their performance at their Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame induction (where Sammy Hagar will also be inducted). He also says that DLR will record some songs with them, but that he is not really “back” with the band. Also, EVH tells RS that Michael Anthony is kicked out of the band for playing with Sammy, and that’s why Wolfie will replace him. He also says, though, that Michael Anthony will still record with them. Messed up.

Valiant, where’d you grow up? That had to be in or near LA.

April 23, 1977, a date which will live in rockdom. Quiet Riot and Van Halen, both barely known groups at the time, share the Glendale College stage for a battle of the bands. I was a senior at Burbank high, where the Rhoads brothers went as well. Van Halen was loud. Quiet Riot made them completely forgettable, and that’s how I always saw them. That was before Randy Rhoads decided to turn the group in the speed metal direction, and they played strong, clear music instead of sounding like crumbling machinery.

Savage, remember this. Old age and treachery defeats youth and exuberance EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

I can’t believe everyone’s dumping on Van Halen. Yeah they’re old, but they’re still better that anything out there today. Does anybody think people will be talking about My Chemical Romance or Young Jeezy 20 years after their last album? And Van Halen has something that’s been missing in music since grunge, they like to have a good time.

Scot on February 2, 2007 at 9:10 PM

Treacher, how could you forget the classic “Sleep the Night Away”?

Scot on February 2, 2007 at 9:54 PM

My wife is a Van Hagar fan, I prefer the original VH. But to be honest, all these old farts need to retire. The Stones can’t sell tickets anymore, according to the press. I saw Jimmy Page and Robert Plant a few years ago. Time for them to hang it up as well.

VHII was a better album than VH1, IMO. Either way, I’d rather youtube “Hot For Teacher” then watch poor DLR make a fool of himself.

Oh, and can someone please tell Aerosmith to give up, too?

robblefarian on February 2, 2007 at 9:59 PM

Daily Double

Eddie van Halen and David Lee Roth

Who?

Correct! We would have also accepted Who cares? and huh?

lorien1973 on February 2, 2007 at 10:09 PM

I wish VH well – David Lee Roth made that band what it was. Even so, leave it to Eddie Van Halen to screw up what could have been a terrific reunion by kicking Michael Anthony out of the band. Only a matter of time until Eddie kicks Alex (or Wolfgang?) out of the band after something the guy does tees him off, as well.

Are you hitting on me?

Savage on February 2, 2007 at 10:31 PM

It’s fun to watch my fellow old folks bicker with a young one and I’m also inclined to think that this VH reunion won’t be so great either. They don’t seem to care about their audience enough.

As for old school concerts that were GREAT, the Earth, Wind and Fire-Chicago tour was top notch. EWF has never retired as far as I know (though one of its two original lead singers–Maurice White–retired due to being inflicted with Parkinson’s Disease). And Chicago sounds like they never retired either.

Both bands performed together, singing each other’s signature songs and, sometimes, with one member of a band singing the other band’s songs or playing their instrumental rifts.

The music of either or both may not be to the taste of some, but neither letter their audience(s) down. That’s all one can ask of any performer.

baldilocks on February 2, 2007 at 11:33 PM

Try this on for size…

I grew up in L.A., California. I remember seeing “Van Halen” play in backyard parties in Whittier and Huntington Beach when they were known as “MAMMOTH”, then at “Cars of the Stars” in Buena Park as Van Halen, then finally at Gazarri’s in Hollywood before they ever cut their first album. Saw them a few more times at Cal-Jam and whatnot later on.

I’m tickled that DLR is back, I just hope they don’t suck and they hold it together. I’ll be in line when they start selling tickets for the show!

F-15 Mech, I never knew Van Halen opened of Journey another one of my favorite bands and Benaiah I heard 60-90 days for that new Eagles album something I’ll be buying as well even if Don Henley won’t shut up at Eagles concerts. BTW it was great when he got boo’d for yapping about the war in 05 out here in HI. He got the message by the 4th concert and just shut up and sang without comments. Unfortunately we saw them on night 2 when he yapped for about 30 seconds before the booing started. It was great! I know showing my age of almost 43 but the music today, well. . . . anyway I’m sure 20 years from now you young people will be saying the same thing.

That video is wrong, “Jump” was on the “1984″ album and was not out in 1982. I think it was actually released like at midnight in 1984. Anywho, saw them in 86 with Sammy Haggar and they sucked nothing like 1980 or 81 & 1984.

Scot on February 3, 2007 at 3:00 AM

Best news I’ve ever read on this blog.

There is exactly one band I’ve always regretted missing concert; only one band that I swore I’d do anything to see if they ever got back together.

This is the one. You young pups listening to crap today are nothing but sad. No offense. Music died right right about the time Clinton came into office. Which was a coincidence. No, really. But you young’uns listening to (c)rap and shithop and the ridiculous excuse for music today … you just don’t know what you’re missing.

And it’s not like YOUR music is too hard or too loud. If anything, it’s too pussified, too corporate, too cookie-cutter. Can you seriously listen to one more white kid rapping about the hood? Hear one more song about some “ho” and her “booty.”

And dear God, children, why don’t you pray for a guitar now and then?

Van Halen were gods. Eddie Van Halen is a magician. David Lee Roth made Puffy Diddly Dooky Doo or whatever the @$!3 he calls himself now look like the puff he is.

Best news on this blog ever. Period.

And whoever compared Van Halen to Quiet Riot, please consider finding a bridge to leap off. Or at least lock yourself in a room for a while, until you’re ready to come out and apologize. That was just embarrassing.

Professor Blather on February 3, 2007 at 3:23 AM

I can’t say I remember the flyer, but yes indeedy, I remember that show very well. I lived in Cerritos at the time, which was very close to the Cars of the Stars, and we rode our skateboards to the show. It was actually two museums that sat side by side… Cars of the Stars and Planes of Fame, and the place was packed.

I couldn’t remember the names of the other bands, now I know one of them was the band Eulogy. LMAO.

Thanks Scot. That was funny :)

My first concert was Duran Duran in Oklahoma City, OK when their album Seven and the Ragged Tiger came out. I wasn’t a big fan but I had tickets so I went (I had to look up the album name).

Best concert would be a tie between U2 in Oakland Coliseum in 1987 or Rolling Stones in Munich Olympiastadium in 1991 or so.

There are a few vocalists who have incredibly, no, inhuman vocal talents. DLR is one of those aliens. So is Geddy Lee, and Robert Plant.

daveintexas on February 3, 2007 at 9:32 AM

Greatest. Rock Band. EVER.

I’ve been waiting 20 some years for this. But (and there’s always a but) I saw Dave last year at the Hard Rock in Ft. Lauderdale. He sucked. He couldn’t remember the words and just mumbled thru it. And no Micheal? WTF? Wolfie? “C’mon Ed, gimme a break.”

Never got to see ‘em with Dave, did see ‘em with Sammy several times, including Monsters of Rock tour with Dokken, Scorps.

Gary sucked with VH and vise versa. He was excellent with Extreme (only the first 2 albums, after that they turned grunge).

As mentioned about, so much of the crap they call music today will soon be forgotten, but the Mighty Van Halen will live on. I hope they DO record an album and show these punks how’s it’s done. They could be in their 80′s and they’d still be better than all that Seattle grunge crap. All attitude, no ability. But, the record company execs decide what gets promoted and qhat doesn’t. They know that people our age had to start payin’ bills in the early 90′s and had less disposable income. So they started goin’ for the wallets of the grunge kids. All business, yet the grunge kids act like they hate capitalism.

And all the anti-war crap? I remember goin’ to concerts in the 80′s and the singers were all like “Hey, let’s nuke Libya!” ann everybody cheered!

Van Halen, still number one in my book. In fact, above #1. The #1 spot goes to whoever I feel like hearin’ today, but VH is always above that.

I guess these old rockers are getting hard up for cash and/or publicity.

vcferlita on February 3, 2007 at 11:28 AM

Um, that’s not exactly news. Anyone who ever read an interview with Mick Jagger back in the 70s when the Stones were in their prime will recall the following question, which would invariably find its way somewhere into the interview:
Q: “Will it be the last tour, Mick?”
A: “Well, what the f*** ELSE are we going to do?”

SpartRan on February 3, 2007 at 1:01 PM

BTW, don’t blame the “old rockers” for being hard up for cash. Records don’t sell anymore, because today’s kids don’t understand how to market it or sell it. Ths Stones couldn’t get their latest LP played (as in “on the radio”) because kids today don’t know the first thing about the band who made it. These idiots may have taken charge of the music biz, but they’ve run it into the ground.

SpartRan on February 3, 2007 at 1:08 PM

F 15 Mech, I certainly will let you know. I im’d my husband this great news (he’s headed back and is now in Kuwait) and said “with all that is going on, this is great news?????”. We should be in GA by the time they start touring. Guess I need to change the zip behind my name then?!?

I grew up in HB and remember, through a Jack Daniels haze, seeing Mammoth play in a warehouse still under construction right off of Bolsa Chica Rd. Not sure, but I’m thinking 1976-77 timeframe…

CliffHanger on February 3, 2007 at 6:23 PM

Old???

How many people here saw the caption “He’s married, girls” live? Hell, my sister saw that band live twice. Her friend’s dad was the promoter, they sat up front and still could only hear girls screaming. Double hell, Ted Nugent played at my sister’s synagogue confirmation party while he was still with the Lourdes (essentially a Stones cover band IIRC) before he moved to Chicago to start the Amboy Dukes.

Not sure what my first concert was. I know I saw Jethro Tull (w/ Edgar Winter as an opening act) just after Aqualung was released so that must have been 71 or so. Saw the Mothers play on the same tour as the Fillmore album (with Flo & Eddie). My first Dead show was Oct 30, 1972 and recently found a superb digital download of it. I saw Springsteen play at Hill Auditorium the week he was on Time and Newsweek, touring to support Born To Run.

Eddie van Halen may be a great guitar player (all my axe slinging friends think highly of him) but the band was just cheesy.

Best rock band of all times? That’s impossible to say about anyone, but Mountain rocked just as hard as VH and Papillardi wrote beautiful, lyrical melodies.

Eddie Van Halen cured cancer.

Didn’t work in the past, isn’t gonna work this time.

It didn’t? Just possibly the greatest band ever. Yes, Roth eventually left the band but to say it “didn’t work out the first time” is a little odd. Especially being that after Roth left … the band pretty much accomplished nothing.

rokemronnie, A fellow Mountain and Papillardi fan! Can’t decide who plays “Mississippi Queen” better–Pappallardi or Sam Kennison!

If the VH fans are old, what are we? Ancient?! Now I know how my mother felt every time she’d listen to big band music and say it was terrific…except now I’ve gotten to where I like Big Band myself.
I don’t think you have to be old to appreciate classic Rock (‘n’ Roll)–Check out the reviews of “old” LPs (re-released CDs) on Amazon and you’ll find all these youngsters who’ve discovered the music of their parents’ youth.
And Steve Jobs, bless his heart!, is a Baby Boomer and Classic Rock lover so mercifully, iTunes has plenty of downloads of all our favorites!

baldilocks, I wish I’d gone to the EW&F/Chicago concert when they came to Dallas–I first saw EWF as the warm-up band for Stevie Wonder in 1974 and I used to go see Chicago when they came to town every summer in the early ’70′s–miss Terry Kath!
One of the the best concerts I ever saw was Alice Cooper in his “Million Dollar Babies” Tour 1973–he beheaded himself, played with long snakes, all accompanied by great music!
I don’t care if I’m dating myself! We had/have great music and it literally ROX!
With very few exceptions, the “new” stuff is just terrible–Can anyone sing or play an instrument?

I grew up in L.A., California. I remember seeing “Van Halen” play in backyard parties in Whittier and Huntington Beach when they were known as “MAMMOTH”, then at “Cars of the Stars” in Buena Park as Van Halen, then finally at Gazarri’s in Hollywood

I see your Mammoth, and I raise you Violet Fox (Randy & Doug Rhoads and Kelli Garni) playing everything from garages, picnics and school dances to Starlight Bowl in Burbank before Randy decided to lean in the metal direction and creat Quiet Riot. By the way, Doug Rhoads did a great impression of Keith Moon on drums, but he preferred to stick to the classical rock style.

Right with you there, Jen. I got to see EW&F in San Francisco at a private gig last August, and the fire has not gone out! And I always saw Chicago when they’d come to SoCal, whether it was at the Whiskey, the Forum, or at Anaheim stadium with the Beach Boys in ’75. I used to say that the difference between Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears was that Chicago was a jazz band that played with a rock feel, while BS&T was a rock band that played with a jazz feel. I was at the November 1979 Chicago show at the Forum that turned out to be Terry Kath’s last. Can’t hear Colour My World without remembering that.
